Abstract:A new method combining surface coating with chemical grafting to prepare poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) fiber-silica-graphene oxide (PBO-SiO2-GO) hybrid fiber was proposed. The chemical composition, surface morphology, surface roughness (R-a), surface energy, interfacial shear strength (IFSS), single filament tensile strength (TS) and ultraviolet (UV) resistance of PBO fibers before and after modification were investigated. Experimental results revealed that the PBO fiber surface was covered by a silica coating, onto which GO was successfully grafted through chemical bonds. The R-a and surface energy of PBO-SiO2-GO were obviously increased in comparison with that of an untreated one. The IFSS of its composites was greatly improved due to the excellent wettability and mechanical interlocking of GO. Meanwhile, TS had no obvious decrease after the surface coating and grafting process. Moreover, the introduction of silica coating on the fiber surface led to a better UV resistance than that of an untreated one. We believe this effective method may provide a novel surface modification strategy for developing multifunctional fibers.

Abstract:In this paper, the modification of plasma treatment on PBO (poly(pphenylene benzobisoxazole)) fiber surface was studied. AFM and XPS were used to analyze the influences of treating time on the morphology and surface compositions of PBO fiber respectively. The changes of fiber surface wettability and surface groups were determined by dynamic wettability test equipment and IR spectrum. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between fibers and resin was measured by the microbond test. The broken composites were analyzed by SEM. The results show that the wettability of the fiber surface after plasma treatment is improved and that many hydroxy groups are introduced to benzene rings on the fiber surface. Under the optimum parameters of 170 W and 10 min,the IFSS is improved by 64.7 %. The surface rough degree and oxygen content are the greatest. The ratio of oxygen to carbon is improved by 50.5 %.

Abstract:The modification techniques of poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole)(PBO)fiber were introduced in latest years.The modification trend of PBO fiber was outlooked in the future.The modification techniques of PBO fiber mainly com-prised the blend composition and in-situ copolymerization modification in presence of carbon nanotube, nano-particles like gra-phene and third monomer for the purpose of enhancing the mechanical properties,thermal property,surface performance and ag-ing resistance of PBO fiber.The research in the copolymerization modification mechanism of the modifiers on PBO matrix and the effect of the modifiers on the polymerization and spinning process of PBO should be enhanced in the future.And the combination of the multiple modification techniques or the new modification techniques should be developed in order to produce more excellent high-performance PBO fiber.

Abstract:The PBO polymer solution was synthesized by means of polycondensation of 4,6-diaminoresorcinol(DAR)and terephthalic acid(TPA).At 180～200 ℃,the polymer starts to form liquid crystal state,and the fiber can be synthesized by using the dry-jet wet-spinning method.The fiber was characterized by DSC,Raman spectroscopy and XRD method.Compared with commercial fiber,the structure and thermal properties of the synthesized fiber are the same,but the surface images and the strength are different.The Raman spectra of two kinds of fibers contain six same Raman spectra band,but peak area of the synthesized fiber is smaller.The thermal degradation temperature of synthesized PBO fiber was 650 ℃.The modulus of synthesized PBO fiber can be up to 240~300 GPa by using the thermal drawing method.

Abstract:PBO super fibre is submitted to a corona treatment, and the properties of the interphase between PBO fibres and epoxy matrix systems are optimi z ed by a surface treatment process of the fibres. The relation is studie d between this surface treatment and the resulting chemical and physical surface st ruc ture, as measured with XPS,FT-IR,SEM and surface wettability. The adhesio n strength in fibre-epoxy systems, as measured with single-fibre pull -out and short beam shear experiments, has been established and related to the macromechanical data of real composites. It is concluded that corona- treated fibres may cause 25.6 % improvement in the interfacial shear strengt h(IFSS) due to the increase of the oxygen surface content and the well we ttability to water. But the short beam shear strength values from the cor ona-treated and untreated fibres showed only small differences.

Abstract:Due to their excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance, Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers are applied as one of most potential reinforcement in resin matrix composite. However, the poor adhesion with resin limits their application in advanced composite materials. In this study, PBO fibers were first modified by direct fluorination to improve the interface adhesion between fibers and resin. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were applied to characterize the change of chemical structure and surface topography of fluorinated fibers. The results show that polar groups of C-F and -COOH are produced and surface roughness is enhanced, which increases the interface bonding strength of PBO fibers/epoxy by 48%. The fluorination reaction mechanism of PBO fibers is investigated on the basis of chemical structure change. It's suggested that oxazole ring reacts with fluorine gas preferentially over benzene ring, and addition reaction dominates when fluorine reacts with benzene ring.

Abstract:Poly[p-phenylene benzobisoxazole] (PBO) fiber is treated in a solution of epichlorohydrin and acetone using γ-ray irradiation method with a increasing irradiation dose. The irradiation treatment induces a modification of the surface properties. The effects of the treatment on the chemical components, the surface free energy, and the surface roughness of the fiber are analyzed by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), dynamic capillary method and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The grafting reaction between the PBO polymer and the irradiation medium-epichlorohydrin is also discussed by 1H nuclear magnetism resonance (1H NMR) analysis. The results indicate that, γ-ray irradiation technique can significantly improve the surface chemical inertness and the surface smooth of the PBO fiber by generating some active oxygen-containing, chlorine-including and nitrogen-containing groups and activating the surface of the fiber.

Abstract:The photolysis of PBO fibers exposed to UV light was investigated.The attempts to improve aging resistance of PBO fiber were investigated.It is first time to find that the photolysis of PBO fibers includes two development stages: one could be defined as the physical degradation stage and the other could be defined as the chemical degradation stage.In the physical degradation stage,the main features present that the defects appear on the cortex of fiber,which result in the slow decrease of tensile strength.The chemical degradation stage mainly behaves as chain scission of PBO molecule,which results in the serious damage of fiber surface and sharp reduce of tensile strength.Attempts to improve photo stabilization of PBO fibers,such as improving structure of fiber,coating gel particles on the surface of fiber and using anti-aging agent,were done so that the photo stability of PBO fibers could be improved to some extent by using these methods.

Abstract:The surface of poly-p-phenylene benzobisthiazole (PBO) fibers was treated through oxygen plasma induced vapor phase grafting (PIVPG) method under various oxygen plasma pre-treatment time conditions. The surface chemical composition, surface morphologies and surface free energy of pristine and treated PBO fibers were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Cahn DCAA system. The mechanics property of these fibers was evaluated by tensile strength and interfacial shear strength (IFSS). It was found that the surface characteristics of treated PBO fibers occurred significant change compare with the pristine PBO fibers. After treatment, the polar functional groups were introduced on the fiber surface. Carbon concentration decreased; oxygen concentration and elemental ratio of oxygen to carbon increased. Acrylic acid can react with the activated PBO fibers surface, which led to the fiber surface roughness increased. The surface free energy increased from 41.4mN/m to 62.8mN/m when PBO fibers were plasma pre-treated for 10min, while the IFSS of PBO fibers with epoxy resin increased from 36.6MPa to 55.8MPa. Therefore, PIVPG can be used to enhance the interfacial bond between PBO fibers and epoxy resin.

Abstract:The novel polymer poly[p-(2,5-dihydroxy)-phenylenebenzobisoxazole] (PBOH) fiber was synthesized in the presence of 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalicacid (DHTA) and 4,6-diamino-1,3-benzenediol in poly(phosphoric acid) (PPA) using typical polycondensation conditions. The crystalline solutions of liquid PBOH in PPA were spun into fibers using dry-jet wet spinning. Furthermore, the thermostability and mechanical properties of PBOH were compared with poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzoxazole) (PBO) in order to investigate the relationship between the chain structure and properties. The results indicated that the thermal degradation temperature of PBOH was above 750K and the tensile strength of the PBOH fiber was 3.1GPa, which were much lower than those of PBO fiber. The compressive strength of PBOH fiber was 331 M Pa, which was slightly higher than that of PBO fiber. In addition, molecular simulation was employed to explain why the compressive strength of PBOH fiber did not increase significantly compared to PBO fiber.

Abstract:Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibre has excellent mechanical properties and good thermal stability. However, the use of PBO fibre is limited because of its low photostability. Thus, this work aimed to study the improvement of PBO fibre photostability. Two methods of adhering UV absorbers to PBO fibre surface, namely, coordination bond method and physical adsorption method, were compared. The photo aging results show that the PRO fibres covered by UV absorbers via the coordination bond method were smooth and had no evident particle agglomeration. These fibres showed more improved photostability compared with those covered by UV absorbers via physical adsorption. After 125 h of photo aging, the tensile strength retention rate of PBO fibres covered with UV absorbers via the coordination bond method was still over 90%, which is far higher than that of untreated PBO fibres (approximately 75%). Abstract:The PBO fiber surface was treated by low-temperature plasma. In the low-temperature plasma treatments, the effects of treatment time and power on the fiber surface properties were investigated. Through single fiber tensile test, fiber mechanical properties were analyzed through plasma and chemical processing. The fiber surface morphology was observed by SEM. The fiber cross section change was observed through the microscope. The fiber surface elements and groups were analyzed by the IR spectrum.

Abstract:Poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers were functionalized by 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-560) and then coated with 1 H, 1 H, 2 H, 2H-Perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (HFTES) and UV absorber (UV-328) to improve hydrophobicity and UV aging resistance. The chemical compositions of PBO fibers before and after modification were analyzed by XPS and surface morphologies were observed by SEM. The hydrophobicity of PBO fibers was evaluated by the measurement of contact angle for water and the UV aging resistance was evaluated by the tensile strength retention ratio of PBO fibers. The results showed that KH-560 was successfully introduced onto the PBO fiber surface. The contact angle for water was increased by 128% from 51.7° to 127°, suggesting a huge improvement of hydrophobicity. The UV aging resistance of PBO fibers was also greatly improved. After 400 h UV exposure, the tensile strength retention ratio was increased to 53%, which was much higher than that of 21.4% for pristine PBO fibers. And the results of variable coating times demonstrated that the optimal UV aging resistance was obtained by coating three times.

Abstract:PBO fiber as reinforced material has been widely applied in various fields such as aerospace, automobile and sport apparatus due to excellent mechanic property during past two decades. However, poor interfacial adhesion limits the further application of PBO fiber. To solve this problem, plenty of work has been done. In the present study, the surface of PBO fibers was treated through surface grafting of polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxanes (POSS). The effect of POSS grafting on bulk mechanic property and interfacial property of PBO fiber were studied. Surface chemical composition, surface morphologies, surface free energy, single-fiber tensile strength of untreated and treated PBO fiber were characterized. The results show that POSS nanoparticles were grafted on the fiber surface successfully. The surface characteristics of treated PBO fiber were different from that of untreated one. Oxygen-containing polar functional groups, elemental ratio of oxygen to carbon, surface roughness and surface free energy increased significantly. In addition, interfacial shear strength between treated PBO fibers and epoxy resin increased to 54.9 MPa comparative with untreated one. Meanwhile tensile strength of treated PBO fibers only very little decreased. Therefore, POSS surface grafting can be utilized to enhance the interfacial adhesion between PBO fibers and epoxy resin matrix. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The research progress in the thermal decomposition behavior,thermal decomposition mechanism,hydrolytic stabili- ty,photo stability and chemical stability of poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fiber was introduced.PBO fiber showed excellent thermal and chemical stability and poor hydrolytic and photo stability.The strength and modulus of PBO fiber can be improved by heat treatment.It was put forward that the stability of PBO fiber should be studied further to improve the properties and develop the application field.

Abstract:Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fiber with a smooth surface exhibits limited interfacial interaction with resin matrix. One of the effective strategies to improve the adhesion between the fiber and resin matrix is through surface modification of the fiber. In this study, we have proposed a novel surface treatment agent based on phosphoester cross-linked castor oil (PCCO) for effective surface treatment of PBO fibers. The surface treatment agent was prepared by a simple cross-linking reaction between hydroxy phosphorylated castor oil (PCO) and epoxy resin, with alcohol as the solvent at 65 degrees C. Once the PBO fiber was treated with this agent, the interfacial adhesion between the PBO fiber and the epoxy resin could then be improved. Systematic analyses suggest that the surface treatment with (PCO 1 epoxy)/alcohol solution improves the interaction of the PBO fiber with the epoxy resin matrix. The PCCO coated onto the surface of PBO fiber acts as a coupling agent, improving the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the PBO fiber/epoxy resin composite. Results indicate a 156% increase in IFSS without compromising the mechanical properties of the fiber. (C) 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers

Abstract:The influence of oxygen plasma induced vapor phase grafting of acrylic acid on the surface properties of poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers and interfacial adhesion with epoxy resin matrix were investigated in this paper. After treatment, XRD results show that the average crystal size slightly decreased from 9.85nm to 9.12nm. AFM scanning graphs indicate that the surface roughness of PBO fibers increased significantly. XPS spectra show the percentage content of polar oxygen-containing functional groups obviously increased after modification. The interfacial shear strength between treated PBO fibers and epoxy resin matrix increase by 55%, while the single-filament tensile strength slightly decrease by 8%.

Abstract:Plasma grafting was used to modified polybenzoxazole(PBO)fiber surface.The changes in fiber topography before and after modification were analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The characteristics of wettability before and after modification were detected. Moreover, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between fiber and resin was measured by microbond test. The results showed that after plasma grafting, the polar functional groups were introduced on the surface of PBO fiber; the wettability of fiber was improved; under the grafted condition of 100 W and 10 min, the IFSS was improved by 75%.
