Abstract:The results of impact tests for three-span pressure pipelines were presented. Blunt-nosed, hemisphere-nosed and conical-nosed projectiles struck the pipelines. The diameter and the wall thickness of the tube in the experiments were 45mm and 3mm respectively. The water pressure in the tube was specified as 0MPa, 5MPa, 10MPa, 15MPa and 20MPa respectively. The ballistic limits and the corresponding failure modes under different conditions were acquired. The deformation of the tubes and the time histories of the impact forces were measured and recorded. The results show that the water filled in the tube reduces the ballistic limit and with the increase in the pressure of water the ballistic limit decreases smoothly. The hemispherical missiles need the highest perforation energy to penetrate the tube compared with the blunt and conical missiles. The conical missile needs less. The blunt missile can perforate the pipe with the lowest perforation energy among the three kinds of missiles. When the pipe was impacted by hemispherical missile dishing failure occurred while plugging failure occurred when the pipe was impacted by blunt missile. The force time history shows that the impact process can be divided into three steps. Firstly, the missile nose contacts the pipe wall and the force increases quickly. This step is very short. Secondly, the region of contact enlarges and the pipe wall starts the dishing deformation and this process is a little longer. Finally, the perforation occurs.
