Abstract:Grammar teaching and communicative approach teaching has always been viewed as a contradiction in college English teaching. The former is regarded as a traditional method which should be eliminated, while the latter is considered updated one which requires popularization. Actually, grammar teaching is one part of communicative teaching approach. We can unite the two approaches in college English teaching with some specific methods such as situational dialogues and task-oriented teaching method.

Abstract:This paper is theoretically aimed at discussing how to teach communication skills (written and spoken) through a combination between the classic grammar translation and the modern communicative language teaching). The combination not only results in the formation of a new method which is here known as the communicative grammar translation method, but also in the formation of a new methodology in English language pedagogy which might be applied by English teachers to teach communication skills in the classrooms. The methodology of this new method consists of three special procedures i.e. The first is structural procedure which allows the learners to learn grammar rules and vocabulary. The second is transitional procedure which gives opportunity to the students to practice using the rules in translation and pronunciation drills. The third is communicative procedure which also gives the learners opportunity to use their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in communicative activities. The implementation of the three procedures is believed able to achieve three learning outcomes i.e. making the learners able to deliver English basic communication both in spoken and written, promoting the learners’ language accuracy and fluency in communication, and improving the learner knowledge of grammar and vocabulary to enhance initiatives in communication.

Abstract:Based on the current contradiction between the grammar-translation method and the communicative teaching method in English teaching, this paper, starting with clarifying the task of comprehensive English as well as the definition of the two teaching methods, objectively analyzes their advantages and disadvantages and proposes establishing a new method by fusing them with an elaboration on the reasonability of combining them in the practical teaching of comprehensive English with their complementary advantages.

Abstract:The Grammar Translation Method and the Communicative Approach have both played important roles in grammar teaching. Which is better, the Grammar Translation Method or the Communicative Approach? This paper aims to compare the controllability and feasibility of these two approaches and find out which one is more suitable for grammar teaching in Taiwan. Two classes were selected and taught by the Grammar Translation Method and the Communicative Approach respectively. The college admission test showed that they share a similar level of the overall English proficiency before the intervention. The pre-test demonstrated that there wasn’t any distinction between the two classes in their grammatical competence. The post-test embodied that there was significant difference in their grammatical competence between the two classes. The scores of the students in the Experimental Class were higher than that in the Control Class. The result showed that grammar teaching in the framework of the Grammar Translation Method is better than the Communicative Approach. Nevertheless, the Communicative Approach emphasizes fluency and the Grammar Translation Method is concerned with accuracy. Fluency and accuracy are the target for English learning. So the best way to improve the situation is to combine both methods in teaching English Grammar.

Abstract:A study was made to compare communicative teaching method with traditional teaching methodology in teaching College English Intensive Reading to two different classes in the past two years. The results showed that: communicative method can arouse more enthusiasm from students than traditional method; communicative purpose can be achieved in classroom teaching through making students' activity the center of class,conducting an English class with context and changing “duck-feeding” teaching model.

Abstract:With the rapid development of economy, the demand for practical skills is increasing. The government is attaching more and more importance to education. All parties are concerned about the quality of children's education. It is very important for teachers to know how to use teaching method properly and how to apply it in practical teaching. However, because of various reasons, teachers only use a single teaching method or there are various problems in the actual teaching. As a result, the teaching quality is not good. This is also not conducive to the cultivation of students' abilities. Based on previous studies on grammatical translation, communicative teaching method and flipped classroom, this study studies the advantages and disadvantages of the three methods through comparative analysis. The research results show that each of the three teaching methods has its own advantages and disadvantages, and according to the characteristics and disadvantages of each teaching method, relevant suggestions are put forward.

Abstract:The Grammar-Translation method and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) were both used in English classrooms in high schools in China. This research is a meaningful attempt to investigate the high school student's perceptions of the two mentioned language teaching methods and corresponding learning activities in terms of enjoyment and effectiveness so that their voices can be heard. By applying a quantitative research design using the descriptive approach, questionnaires were answered by the Grade 10 students as well as an informal interview with the teacher. It was found that the grammar-translation method is more favorable than CLT by both the students and the teacher. The implication is that CLT should be given more chances to be practiced by the teachers and students under the new curriculum reform.

Abstract:Ministries of Education increasingly emphasise the importance of communicative skills in their strategy reports and guidelines considering the functioning meaning of English. However, it is notable that in educational settings using grammar-translation methods, such as in some Chinese high schools, many students emerge after years of some types of English classes with minimal skills in speaking. It is urged to find a way out to focus on productive skills development and figure out effective approaches that can be combined effectively for developing students’ speaking while taking into account class size, teacher competence, assessment used, and official curriculum syllabus.

Abstract:The Communicative Language Teaching approach was first put forward in the 1970s, reached its peak and was introduced into our country in the mid-eighties. In the previous researches, a lot of scholars explored its application in speaking, listening, reading and writing. But few researches focus on its application in grammar teaching in junior high school. Some researches also showed CLT is more effective than the traditional approaches in arousing students’ interest, initiative in learning English and other aspects. Nowadays, people have realized the shortcomings of traditional grammar teaching methods that overemphasize language forms and mechanical exercises. Therefore, the traditional grammar teaching method should be reformed under the framework of CLT to combine the learning of language forms with the cultivation of students' ability. Through writing this paper, it aims to explore effects of CLT in teaching grammar.

Abstract:The current study delved into examining the effectiveness of Audio-lingual Method (ALM) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in developing the English language grammar skills and language learning attitude of EFL intermediate Chinese learners. The study employed a quasi-experimental research design in the two groups of 60 Chinese EFL middle grades. The study uses a quasi-experimental research method for two groups of respondents. Findings showed that the ALM and CLT are effective in enhancing the English language grammar proficiency and language learning attitude among Chinese EFL intermediate learners. The gender gap in language learning favors female respondents to exhibit better performance. Consequently, the EFL learners exposed to the Communicative Language Teaching method showed better language learning grammar performance compared to those in the Audio-lingual Method. Language grammar learning attitude is not affected by gender, implying that both sexes were able to obtain the same level of benefits of the ALM and CLT. Finally, the study further concludes that language proficiency is not associated to attitude towards learning grammar of the two groups of respondents after their exposure to Audio-lingual method and Communicative Language Teaching implying that regardless of the learners’ attitude towards learning grammar they are capable of manifesting better performance in language learning with the use of ALM and CLT. The theoretical and practical implications of the study are presented and discussed.

Abstract:After the implementation of the new curriculum,many teachers simply think that middle school English teaching is just to cultivate students' language communicative competence.They begin to weaken the teaching of grammar,pay less attention to the basic grammar in middle school English,let alone conduct researches on teaching ideas and approaches.As a result,students have encountered lots of problems in producing and using language,and the teaching effectiveness is far from satisfactory.Therefore,teachers should attach importance to grammar teaching,and make grammar teaching close to life,task-based,situational,and interesting.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of globalization, the international status of the Chinese language has been increasingly elevated. However, its unique grammatical features pose significant challenges to non-native learners. Traditional grammar instruction focuses on the impartation of grammatical rules, neglecting the application of language in authentic contexts, which affects the accuracy of learners' Chinese communication. This paper analyzes the theoretical basis and practical application of contextual teaching strategies, demonstrating their significant advantages in improving the effectiveness of Chinese grammar instruction: they can promote the internalization and transfer of learners' language knowledge and enhance their cross-cultural communication skills. By analyzing the current implementation of these strategies, the paper profoundly analyzes the challenges faced in teaching, including the limitations of existing textbooks, the difficulty of teachers' preparation, and the constraints of classroom teaching time. It also proposes corresponding countermeasures and suggestions to support the practice and research of Chinese grammar instruction.

Abstract:In the context of global communication and individual development, English has evolved into a universal lingua franca, playing a crucial role across various fields worldwide. Proficiency in spoken English is indispensable for the academic journey of Chinese college students. However, the current status of Chinese college students' spoken English proficiency reveals that there are still some aspects that need improvement. The communicative approach, recognized as an advanced language teaching methodology, proves to be instrumental in enhancing students' oral proficiency in English. This paper adopts the communicative approach perspective, employing a case study focused on a specific section of a Chinese students' English textbook. The study delves into the teaching path of "create-experience-practice-achieve". Building upon this teaching framework, a concrete teaching plan is designed, followed by an analysis and reflections, aiming to provide reflective insights as a practical reference for college-level oral English instruction. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the enhancement of college students' oral English proficiency.

Abstract:As the law of language use, grammar guides the application and practice of language.A strong foundation in grammar improves reading and writing skills. Therefore, mastering grammar skillfully plays a positive and effective role in improving students’ language ability. However, the current English grammar teaching in senior high schools in China faces many problems. First of all, the necessity of grammar teaching has been ignored to some extent. In practical teaching, most teachers prefer to let students constantly expand their vocabulary, and pay more attention to grammar; Secondly, although some teachers have a certain understanding of the importance of grammar, it is difficult to organize teaching activities scientifically, resulting in the situation that students’ enthusiasm for learning grammar is not high and grammar is difficult to learn.
