Abstract:We have developed a simplified molecular-dynamical model for simulating ablation of solid surfaces by laser pulses, and specifically investigated expansion of Cu cloud in vacuum vaporized on the surface, showing that the angular distributions of the plume depend on the shape of the laser spot on the surface. In particular, experimentally observed flipover effects have been obtained, and an adiabatic constant determined from our simulations via an adiabatic expansion model agrees well with previous measurements.
Effect of the Dynamic Absorptance of A Metallic Target Surface on Pulsed Laser Ablation

Abstract:A theoretical model of pulsed laser ablation (PLA) considering the dynamic absorptance of a target surface is proposed. First, the expression for the dynamic absorptance as a function of irradiation time and incident laser intensity is derived. The incident laser intensity is assumed to be expressed by a Gauss function, which more closely approaches the actual case. The heat conduction equation considering the dynamic absorptance and the Gaussian distribution of laser intensity is then set up. Using tungsten as an example, the evolution of the absorptance with irradiation time and intensity before melting and after melting is numerically simulated, as well as the evolution of temperature with time. In addition, the evolution of melt depth with time is given. The effects of the dynamic absorptance on PLA are investigated in detail, especially for the evolution of temperature with time for the melt layer. Results show the dynamic absorptance affects the simulated results markedly, and its effects on the target temperature after melting become stronger than those before melting. A comparison of the calculated results with experimental data shows that the dynamic absorptance plays an important role during PLA. (c) 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
Improved Thermal Model And Its Application In High-Power Laser Ablation Of Target

Abstract:Among various candidates considered to grow high-quality thin film materials, pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique has attracted much attention over past years due to its special advantage that the target component is similar to the thin film. During PLD process, pulsed laser ablation (PLA) is an important stage which determines the quality and the efficiency in making thin film. Therefore, the investigation of the corresponding thermodynamic process of PLA is very significant and the relevant researches are widely developed. In this chapter, we review recent works of PLA including the improved thermal model. The concrete works include an improved thermal model describing UV high-power nanosecond laser ablation of metal target, and a tailed thermal model describing IR high-power nanosecond laser ablation of multi-elemental oxide superconductor target. Under the same parameters, the comparison between the numerical results and the experimental data is also presented.
A Quasi-Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study on the Effect of Particles Collisions in Pulsed-Laser Desorption

Abstract:The dynamics characteristic and effect of atoms and particulates ejected from the surface generated by nanosecond pulsed-laser ablation are very important. In this work, based on the consideration of the inelasticity and non-uniformity of the plasma particles thermally desorbed from a plane surface into vacuum induced by nanosecond laser ablation, the one-dimensional particles flow is studied on the basis of a quasi-molecular dynamics (QMD) simulation. It is assumed that atoms and particulates ejected from the surface of a target have a Maxwell velocity distribution corresponding to the surface temperature. Particles collisions in the ablation plume. The particles mass is continuous and satisfies fractal theory distribution. Meanwhile, the particles are inelastic. Our results show that inelasticity and non-uniformity strongly affect the dynamics behavior of the particles flow. Along with the decrease of restitution coefficient e and increase of fractional dimension D, velocity distributions of plasma particles system all deviate from the initial Gaussian distribution. The increasing of dissipation energy ΔE leads to density distribution clusterized and closed up to the center mass. Predictions of the particles action based on the proposed fractal and inelasticity model are found to be in agreement with the experimental observation. This verifies the validity of the present model for the dynamics behavior of pulsed-laser-induced particles flow.

Abstract:The theory model for pulsed-laser-driven ablation is established, and the plasma's characteristics of the bulk target irradiated by pulsed laser with high-power are studied in detail according to mass continuous condition, energy balance condition and momentum conservation. In addition, the velocity distribution of the plasma is discussed, and the plasma's density and temperature near the ablation surface as the function of time are discussed respectively on the basis of hydrodynamic theory combined with boundary conditions by different method and Pichard iterative method.

Abstract:The dynamics expansion mechanisms for plasma plume generated by pulsed laser radiation are studied in detail, taking account of plasma ionization effect. Based on the consideration of local conservations of mass, momentum, collected as the assumption that plasma can be viewed as compressible ideal fluid and high temperature-high pressure ideal gas, we develop a new dynamics expansion mechanism for plasma produced by pulsed laser radiation. Using the analytical method, the space number density and pressure evolvement of plasma in cylindrical coordinate are obtained, the dynamics evolvement equations are also derived. The results from the present model indicate that the plasma dynamic expansion behaviour can be evidently influenced by the ionization fraction.. Its effect is similar to a new dynamic source for plasma expansion and increases the expansion acceleration in all directions. The predictions of the expansion of the plasma is affected by the temperature, the average atoms mass and the ionization degree of the plasma are consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:The mechanisms are different for intense pulsed ion beam ablation plasma expanding into ambient gas of different pressure or into vacuum. The former is complicated by the interaction between plasma and the ambient gas. The 2D gas dynamical model has been built to describe the process, and the plasma expansion into ambient gas of pressures from 10~ -6 atmosphere to 1 atmosphere have been calculated. The results show that the phenomena of plasma expanding into ambient gases vary as the pressure changes. It can expand into vacuum freely, but into atmosphere its movement is confined. And the ejection into ambient gas of one thousandth atmosphere or so is special, the ‘snowplow' phenomenon is observed and the plume plasma splits into fast_ and slow_moving parts.

Abstract:The whole ablation process of target heated by pulsed lasers is studied in this paper. Under the appropriate dynamic boundary conditions, have been investigated in detail the heat flow equation with heat generation term, and the temperature distribution of target before and after the melting. In particular, after target melting, the temperature distribution and the interface position between the solid and liquid phases as functions of time are presented in the solution of analytical expressions. Additionally, under the energy balance conditions, the dependence of the ablating surface position on the time is investigated. Consequently, the ablation of target Si has been calculated. This research shows a positive result compared with the relevant experiments.

Abstract:We develop a new synthetical model of high-power pulsed laser ablation, which considers the dynamic absorptance, vaporization, and plasma shielding. And the corresponding heat conduction equations with the initial and boundary conditions are given. The numerical solutions are obtained under the reasonable technical parameter conditions by taking YBa2Cu3O7 target for example. The space-dependence and time-dependence of temperature in target at a certain laser fluence are presented, then, the transmitted intensity through plasma plume, space-dependence of temperature and ablation rate for different laser fluences are significantly analyzed. As a result,, the satisfactorily good agreement between our numerical results and experimental results indicates that the influences of the dynamic absorptance, vaporization, and plasma shielding cannot be neglected. Taking all the three mechanisms above simultaneously into account for the first time, we cause the present model to be more practical.

Abstract:Nanosecond pulsed lasers have been widely applied to interact with and characterize many different materials. For the purpose of a broader application, the current challenge is to achieve a speedup of ablation process, which is commonly thought to be possible by raising the on-target laser intensity. But the use of high intensity lasers results in severe laser-matter-plume interaction, leading to unwanted effects (e.g. saturation, shielding and thermal damage), which further affect the ablation process and ablation quality. However, laser-matter-plume interaction and its effects on ablation characteristics during laser scanning ablation processes are not well understood. In this paper, shadowgraph images and optical images during a laser ablation process were taken with a pump-probe shadowgraph imaging setup and an ultrahigh-speed camera. The results demonstrate that, under a high incoming laser density, laser-matter-plume interaction presents a periodical process, and thus cause a major impact on ablation regimes and microstructure formations. Moreover, the characteristics of micromorphologies and ejected particles suggest that the laser-matter-plume interaction has a significant influence on the ablation process, which, in turn, provides a more comprehensive understanding of the influence of laser-matter-plume interaction on the scanning ablation process. Consequently, laser-matter-plume interaction and its influence on the ablation process were summarized and clarified. Abstract:The gas dynamics of pulsed laser ablation of silicon target in the helium as ambient is investigated via direct simulation Monte Carlo method with a real physical scale of target-substrate configuration. A shock driven process is clearly observed. It is shown that the interaction of the shock front with the target surface and the vapor front induce significant backward flux of ablated particles and oscillating behavior of vapor front. A confined layer mixed with high density Si and He atoms is formed around the contact front. Its behavior is important to the nanoparticle formation and deposition. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract:The book introduces ‘the state of the art' of pulsed laser ablation and its applications. It is based on recent theoretical and experimental studies. The book reaches from the basics to advanced topics of pulsed laser ablation. Theoretical and experimental fundamental phenomena involved in pulsed laser ablation are discussed with respect to material properties, laser wavelength, fluence and intensity regime of the light absorbed linearly or non-linearly in the target material. The energy absorbed by the electrons leads to atom/molecule excitation, ionization and/or direct chemical bond breaking and is also transferred to the lattice leading to material heating and phase transitions. Experimental non-invasive optical methods for analyzing these phenomena in real time are described. Theoretical models for pulsed laser ablation and phase transitions induced by laser beams and laser-vapour/plasma interaction during the plume expansion above the target are also presented. Calculations of the ablation speed and dimensions of the ablated micro- and nano-structures are performed. The validity and required refinement of different models in different experimental conditions is provided. The pulsed laser deposition process which bases on collecting the ablated particles on a surface is analyzed in terms of efficiency and quality of the deposited films as a function of ambient conditions, target material, laser parameters and substrate characteristics. The interaction between the incident laser and the ablation plasma is analyzed with respect to its influence on the structures of the deposited films and its capacity to generate high harmonics and single attosecond pulses which are highly desirable in pump-probe experiments.

Abstract:The vaporization effect generated by high-power nanosecond pulsed laser ablation was studied in detail based on the heat flux equation which accounting for the energy loss of vaporization. The vaporization velocity and temperature evolvement with different laser fluence, and the effect of vaporization on ablation depth during and after the laser irradiation were emphatically analyzed. The results show that the vaporization strongly affects the surface temperature and whole ablation depth in the pulsed laser ablation. Under the same experimental conditions, the numerical results calculated with our modified ablation depth calculation formula are more in agreement with the experimental datum.

Abstract:Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) is a significant method to study the characteristics of flow field and combustion, owing to the advantages of non-conduction, high spatial and temporal resolutions. In comparison with existing low-speed PLIF, high-speed PLIF has a lot of advantages. High-speed PLIF with repetition rate higher than 10 kHz is necessary to study turbulent and reacting flows in order to capture the dynamics that governs the underlying physics in the fields such as supersonic and hypersonic flows, combustion and plasma physics. The lack of laser sources with high repetition rate and high pulse energy significantly limits the development of high-speed PLIF. A comprehensive overview for the development and the latest achievements of high-speed PLIF and the employed laser sources was given in this article. The characteristics of different laser sources were compared, and the pulse-burst technique was believed to be a promising source for high-speed PLIF technique. The development of pulse-burst laser used as the laser source in high-speed PLIF was predicted.

Abstract:We modify the Sedov theory to describe plasma shock waves generated in a pulsed laser ablating process. We also study the propagation characteristics of plasma shock waves during the preparation process of functional thin films deposited by a pulsed laser. In particular, we discuss in detail the temporal behaviour of energy causing the difference of the propagation characteristics between the plasma shock wave and the ideal shock wave in the point explosion model. Under the same experimental conditions, the theoretical results calculated with our modified Sedov theory are in good agreement with the existing experimental data.

Abstract:In this study, the influence of laser energy and pressure on propulsion performance of zinc and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is investigated by impulse measurement, fast exposure images, spectral diagnostics and target ablation. A Q-switched Nd: YAG laser with the wavelength of 1064nm and pulse width of 6 ns is employed. The impulse and coupling coefficient generated by laser ablation ABS are greater than that of Zn, and they exhibit a similar variation trend with pressure. However, at higher pressure levels, the change in impulse versus laser energy is not completely coincident between Zn and ABS samples. The target property plays a significant role in the generation and propagation of plume related to the plasma parameters such as electron density and temperature. The temporal evolution images indicate that the plasma plume of laser-induced Zn presents a faster decay in comparison with that of ABS, which is ascribed to the fact that the gas temperature of ABS is higher than the electron temperature of Zn plasma in the local thermodynamical equilibrium. Also, the electron density is lower for Zn due to the rapid heat diffusion and higher ablation threshold of metal. It is found that the surface absorption is dominant for metal because the ablated crater of Zn performs larger diameter and shallower depth. On the contrary, the shrinkage in diameter but enhancement in depth of crater is observed from ABS surface, and the ablation mass is larger, suggesting the obvious volume absorption for polymer. The results reveal that the target property can engender an important effect on the energy conversion between laser, target and plasma.

Abstract:The whole ablation process of target during the pulsed laser preparation of thin films is studied in this paper. An ablation model of targets in which the vaporization is taken account is present based on the superheated theory. Different heat flux equations for different stages are then established. Finally, as using Si as the target, a finite difference method is employed to simulate the space- and time-dependence of temperature in the target. Vaporization velocity and vaporization thickness evolutions with different laser fluence are investigated. The dependence of solid-liquid interface location S(t) on time which takes into account the melting relaxation time is derived too. The results show that the vaporization strongly affects the surface temperature in the pulsed laser ablation. When the laser intensity reaches near the phase explosion energy threshold, the vaporization velocity and ablation depth will evidently decrease because of the gas dynamic effects. This result is more appropriate than that obtained in previous works.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Laser produced plasmas (LPP) have various applications including superconducting films fabrication, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy, and nanoparticles formation. Although massive efforts have been made, dynamics of LPP remain incompletely understood due to the complex interactions among the laser, the target, the plasma plume and the ambient gas. Recently, we are conducting comprehensive researches on the dynamics of 1064 nm 20 ns laser ablated plasmas in air under different experimental conditions with an laser energy density in the order of J/mm2. Time and spatial-resolved diagnostics including fast ICCD photograph, streak photograph, spatial resolved optical emission spectroscopy, laser shadowgraph, schlieren photograph and interferogram are applied to obtain the evolution images and the plasma parameters. From series of experiments, (i) initial plasma expansions within and after the laser pulse in air are obtained. Plasma dynamics during the nanosecond laser pulse could be divided into three stages: fast expansion, division into the primary plasma and the front plasma, and stagnation 1. (ii) Influence of spot size on the expansion dynamics of atmospheric LPP, and the evolution of the species from both the target and the air are investigated 2. (iii) Plume splitting of laser ablated Al plasmas at 10-1000 are interpreted from the view of ion distributions. In the beginning, the spectral lines are mainly from the Al III ion. Then, the Bragg peak in stopping power of the ambient gas to Al III could be the dominant reason for the enhanced emission from the fast moving part, and the recombination of Al III to Al I-II ions near the target surface become response to the radiations from the slow moving/stationary part 3.

Abstract:An ablation model of targets irradiated by pulsed laser is established. By using the simple energy balance conditions, the relationship between ablation surface location and time is derived. By an adiabatic approximation, the continuous-temperature condition, energy conservation and all boundary conditions can be established. By applying the analytical method and integral-approximation method, the solid and liquid phase temperature distributions are obtained and found to be a function of time and location. The interface of solid and liquid phase is also derived. The results are compared with the other published data. In addition, the dynamics process of pulsed laser deposition of KTN (Kta 0.65 Nb 0.35 O 3 ) thin film is simulated in detail by using fluid dynamics theory. By combining the expression of the target ablation ratio and the dynamic equation and by using the experimental data, the effects of laser action parameters on the thickness distribution of thin film and on the thin film component characteristics are discussed. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data.
