Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers are a type of highly branched polymers with a multitude of end groups. Because of their highly branched three-dimensional and sphere-like molecular architecture, hyperbranched polymers have shown very different properties from those of their linear analogues, such as low viscosity, high solubility and a large number of terminal functional groups that can be modified. Hence, a great deal of attention has been focused on hyperbranched polymers due to their unique structure, broad application fields, relatively easy synthetic methods and low cost. This paper reviews the development and the most recent advance of hyperbranched polymers in structure (including traditional structure and novel π conjugated structure), synthetic methods, properties and applications, with an emphasis being laid on the intrinsic relationships between structure, properties and applications as novel functional materials, such as nano-materials, drug delivery agents, electroluminescent materials and sensory materials. Additionally, the perspectives and the problems should be solved in the future are provided.

Abstract:Long-chain branching plays an important role in the performance of polyolefins (POs). The existence of a very small amount of long-chain branches (LCBs), i.e., < 1 per 10 000 carbons, can significantly improve processability of the polyolefin materials, which is highly desired for those intractable polyolefins with narrow molecular weight distribution and high degree of crystallinity. Numerous literatures have been published on the controlled synthesis of long-chain-branched POs. In the previous paper, the major literatures of single catalyst systems have been summarized. This paper provides a comprehensive review for the binary and multiple catalyst systems and a brief summary of some other methods for the controlled synthesis of long-chain-branched POs. The controllability of long-chain-branched structures in the various preparation procedures with single or two reactor systems, and in one or two-step processes, is analyzed and compared in-depth.

Abstract:Polyolefins (POs) are the largest polymer product in the world. The innovation in converting commodity olefin monomers to highly value added high-performance POs has been and will continue to be a major theme in both academic research and industry practice. The excellent properties of POs can be achieved through precise engineering of their chain architectures, which largely involves control of the chain branching structures. Long-chain branching is one of the most important parameters in the aspect of various chain branching structures. A huge amount of literatures have been reported to achieve better control of long-chain branched structures over the last two decades. Recently, good effort has been made in reviewing all the major literatures and summarizing the catalytic systems and synthetic strategies for the controlled synthesis of long-chain branched POs. This paper represents the first of the series, that is, controlled synthesis of long-chain branched POs via single catalyst systems.

Abstract:As an important branch of polymer field, hyperbranched polymers have developed rapidly recently, which have been applied in various fields because of its outstanding biodegradability and biocompatibility, especially in biology and coatings. According to reaction mechanism, the fabrication methods of hyperbranched polymers include polycondensation, ring-opening polymerization, living polymerization and other new methods. These methods are all environmental-friendly and high-efficient to generate hyperbranched polymers, and are valuable for industrialization, but there are still some defects such as the structure of the polymer is not regular enough, the composition of the polymer is too single, or the partial synthesis method is complicated. In this work, on the basis of previous studies, the preparation methods of hyperbranched polymers and their applications in various fields were reviewed, and the development trend of hyperbranched polymers was analyzed.

Abstract:Because of the special structures and properties,as well as the possibility of large-scale production,branched polymers have become one of the most important kinds of polymer materials rapidly,which have broad application potentials.Based on the extensive literature,the review was devoted to the discussion of recent developments in the field of synthesis reactions,including main chain initiation method,main chain-branched chain coupling method,macromonomer-monomer copolymerization method and in the field of characterization methods,including infrared spectroscopy method,NMR method,differential thermal analysis method,GPC-automatic viscometer method.Besides,the advantages and disadvantages of adopted methods were evaluated.All those were reviewed in an attempt to make this field to be further understood,and to accelerate its development more quickly.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers (HPs) are highly branched three-dimensional (3D) macromolecules. Their globular and dendritic architectures endow them with unique structures and properties such as abundant functional groups, intramolecular cavities, low viscosity, and high solubility. HPs can be facilely synthesized via a one-pot polymerization of traditional small molecular monomers or emerging macromonomers. The great development in synthetic strategies, from click polymerization (i.e., copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition, metal-free azide-alkyne cycloaddition, strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition, thiol-ene/yne addition, Diels-Alder cycloaddition, Menschutkin reaction, and aza-Michael addition) to recently reported multicomponent reactions, gives rise to diverse HPs with desirable functional/hetero-functional groups and topologies such as segmented or sequential ones. Benefiting from tailorable structures and correspondingly special properties, the achieved HPs have been widely applied in various fields such as light-emitting materials, nanoscience and technology, supramolecular chemistry, biomaterials, hybrid materials and composites, coatings, adhesives, and modifiers. In this review, we mainly focus on the progress in the structural control, synthesis, functionalization, and potential applications of both conventional and segmented HPs reported over the last decade.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers (HBPs), an important subclass of dendritic macromolecules, are highly branched, three-dimensional globular nanopolymeric architectures. Attractive features like highly branched topological structures, adequate spatial cavities, numerous terminal functional groups and convenient synthetic procedures distinguish them from the available polymers (the linear, branched, and crosslinking polymers). Due to their unique physical/chemical properties, applications of HBPs have been explored in a large variety of fields. In particular, HBPs exhibit unique advantages in the biological and biomedical systems and devices. Firstly, the way to prepare HBPs usually only involves simple one-pot reactions and avoids the complicated synthesis and purification procedures, which makes the manufacturing process more convenient, thus reducing production costs. Secondly, the large number of end-groups of HBPs provides a platform for conjugation of the functional moieties and can also be employed to tailor-make the properties of HBPs, enhancing their versatility in biological applications. Thirdly, HBPs possess excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, controlled responsive nature, and ability to incorporate a multiple array of guest molecules through covalent or noncovalent approaches. All of these features of HBPs are of great significance for designing and producing biomaterials. To date, significant progress has been made for the HBPs in solving some of the fundamental and technical questions toward their bioapplications. The present review highlights the contribution of HBPs to biological and biomedical fields with intent to aid the researchers in exploring HBPs for bioapplications.

Abstract:Over the past 15 years, hyperbranched polymers have received much attention due to their unique chemical and physical properties as well as their potential applications in coatings, additives, drug and gene delivery, macromolecular building blocks, nanotechnology, and supramolecular science. Hyperbranched polymers can be prepared by means of single-monomer methodology (SMM) and double-monomer methodology (DMM). In SMM, the polymerization of an ABn or latent ABn monomer leads to hyperbranched macromolecules. SMM consists of at least four components: (1) polycondensation of ABn monomers; (2) self-condensing vinyl polymerization; (3) self-condensing ring-opening polymerization; (4) proton-transfer polymerization. In DMM, direct polymerization of two suitable monomers or a monomer pair gives rise to hyperbranched polymers. A classical example of DMM, the polymerization of A2 and Bn (n>2) monomers, is well known. Recently, a novel DMM based on the in situ formation of ABn intermediates from specific monomer pairs has been developed. This form of DMM is designated as ‘couple-monomer methodology’ (CMM) to clearly represent the method of polymerization. Many commercially available chemicals can be used as the monomers in these systems, which should extend the availability and accessibility of hyperbranched polymers with various new end groups, architectures and properties. Because a number of comprehensive reviews have been published on SMM, research involving DMM is emphasized here. In addition, recent developments in the modification, functionalization and application of hyperbranched polymers are described.

Abstract:The three-dimensional structures of hyperbranched materials have made them attractive in many important applications. However, the preparation of hyperbranched materials remains challenging. The hyperbranched materials from addition polymerization have gained attention, but are still confined to only a low level of branching and often low yield. Moreover, the complication of synthesis only allows a few specialized monomers and inimers to be used. Here we report a 'Vinyl Oligomer Combination' strategy; a versatile approach that overcomes these difficulties and allows facile synthesis of highly branched polymeric materials from readily available multi-vinyl monomers, which have long been considered as formidable starting materials in addition polymerization. We report the alteration of the growth manner of polymerization by controlling the kinetic chain length, together with the manipulation of chain growth conditions, to achieve veritable hyperbranched materials, which possess nearly 70% branch ratios as well as numerous vinyl functional groups.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polyphosphate polyesters (HPPs) as a special class of hyperbranched polymers have attracted increased interest and have been intensively studied, because of peculiar structures, excellent biocompatibility, flexibility in physicochemical properties, biodegradability, water soluble, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. HPPs can be divided into phosphates as monomers and phosphates as end groups. In this article, the classification, general synthesis, modifications, and applications of HPP are reviewed. In addition, recent developments in the application of HPP are described, such as modified or functionalized by end capping and hypergrafting to improve the performances in polymer blends, coatings, flame retardant, leather. Furthermore, the modifications and application of HPPs in biomedical materials, such as drug delivery and bone regeneration were discussed. In summary, the hyperbranched polymer enlarges its application range and improves its application performance compared with conventional polymer. In the future, more new HPPs composite materials will be developed through hyperbranched technique. This review of HPPs will provide useful theoretical basis and technical support for the development of new hyperbranched polymer material.

Abstract:The synthesis, characterization, physical properties, and applications of branched polyesters are discussed. This review describes recent efforts in the synthesis of statistically and tailored branched systems, and performance advantages compared to linear counterparts. In particular, an emphasis is placed on long-chain branching, where the branches are sufficiently long enough to form entanglements. Step-growth polymerization methodologies that employ various combinations of multi and mono-functional groups to achieve different levels of branching are reviewed in detail. The performance of branched polyesters, including behavior in dilute and semi-dilute solutions, and melt and solid-state properties are discussed. The implications of topological parameters including branch length, number of branches, and branching architecture on rheological performance are also reviewed. Although the majority of this review focuses on the synthesis and rheological behavior of branched polyesters, some discussion is devoted to the influence of branching on solid-state properties, sub-micron fiber formation, and controlled biodegradation for drug-delivery applications. Finally, a perspective of future directions in high performance applications for branched polyesters is provided.

Abstract:Environmental issues, including climate change and plastic pollution, have compelled scientists to look at alternatives to traditional polymers. Scientists are actively researching biobased hyperbranched polymers, an emerging group of highly branched polymers made from sustainable resources. They are seen as a promising alternative to petrochemical-based polymers. Hyperbranched polymers can be made using single- and double-monomer techniques. This review provides an extensive perspective of the synthesis and properties of biobased hyperbranched polymers made from a variety of renewable starting materials, including starch, lignin, vanillin, levulinic acid, furfurylamine, ferulic acid, citric acid, adipic acid, succinic acid, and tannic acid and various vegetable oils have been investigated till date. Most of these biobased hyperbranched polymers have been created using vegetable oil as their raw materials because numerous vegetable oil derivatives like monoglycerides, polyols, and fatty acids can be potentially used as monomers for the polymer. In the paper, specifics about modified biobased hyperbranched polymers, their composites, nanocomposites, and functionalized versions are highlighted. These materials belong to a class that combines the special characteristics of hyperbranched polymers with the reinforcing and functionalizing effects of fillers like silver, carbon, silicone, clay, etc. Lastly, the paper also discusses the various practical applications of biobased hyperbranched polymers in various industrial sectors and their prospects for the future.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers with both highly branched structures and numerous vinyl functional groups have been synthesized via reversible activation/deactivation controlled polymerization of multifunctional vinyl monomers. By controlling the competition between propagation and reversible termination using a deactivation enhanced method, the growth rate of polymer chains is decreased and the onset of gelation is prevented until the system has achieved much higher levels of conversion than has previously been reported for nonenhanced systems. Here, we demonstrate this strategy by synthesizing highly branched, irregular dendritic polymers with a multiplicity of reactive functionalities such as vinyl and halogen functional groups, and controlled chain structure via deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a commercially available multifunctional vinyl monomer-divinylbenzene (DVB) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA).

Abstract:Polymer flooding, one of the main methods for improving crude oil recovery using chemical flooding technology in China, is widely used for actual oil displacement. Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) is a commonly used linear polymer in polymer flooding, but it exhibits poor temperature and salt resistance due to its molecular structure. Therefore, branched polymers have been studied. This article provides a review of the specific synthetic methods and current practical applications in the petrochemical field of dendritic polymers and hyperbranched macromolecules. The advantages and disadvantages of each synthetic method for branched polymers are also elaborated. Finally, the application prospects of branched polymers are discussed. The feasibility of branched polymers in large quantities should be further verified through additional field tests, which should address concerns such as synthesis costs and reaction efficiency.
