Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers are a type of highly branched polymers with a multitude of end groups. Because of their highly branched three-dimensional and sphere-like molecular architecture, hyperbranched polymers have shown very different properties from those of their linear analogues, such as low viscosity, high solubility and a large number of terminal functional groups that can be modified. Hence, a great deal of attention has been focused on hyperbranched polymers due to their unique structure, broad application fields, relatively easy synthetic methods and low cost. This paper reviews the development and the most recent advance of hyperbranched polymers in structure (including traditional structure and novel π conjugated structure), synthetic methods, properties and applications, with an emphasis being laid on the intrinsic relationships between structure, properties and applications as novel functional materials, such as nano-materials, drug delivery agents, electroluminescent materials and sensory materials. Additionally, the perspectives and the problems should be solved in the future are provided.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers (HBPs), an important subclass of dendritic macromolecules, are highly branched, three-dimensional globular nanopolymeric architectures. Attractive features like highly branched topological structures, adequate spatial cavities, numerous terminal functional groups and convenient synthetic procedures distinguish them from the available polymers (the linear, branched, and crosslinking polymers). Due to their unique physical/chemical properties, applications of HBPs have been explored in a large variety of fields. In particular, HBPs exhibit unique advantages in the biological and biomedical systems and devices. Firstly, the way to prepare HBPs usually only involves simple one-pot reactions and avoids the complicated synthesis and purification procedures, which makes the manufacturing process more convenient, thus reducing production costs. Secondly, the large number of end-groups of HBPs provides a platform for conjugation of the functional moieties and can also be employed to tailor-make the properties of HBPs, enhancing their versatility in biological applications. Thirdly, HBPs possess excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, controlled responsive nature, and ability to incorporate a multiple array of guest molecules through covalent or noncovalent approaches. All of these features of HBPs are of great significance for designing and producing biomaterials. To date, significant progress has been made for the HBPs in solving some of the fundamental and technical questions toward their bioapplications. The present review highlights the contribution of HBPs to biological and biomedical fields with intent to aid the researchers in exploring HBPs for bioapplications.

Abstract:Dendrimer is one type of macromolecules with well-defined, highly-branched and nano-scaled architectures, composed of three distinct domains: core, branches and terminal groups. Its potential functions and applications are explored based on the unique physical and chemical features due to special molecular architecture. Using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as the core of dendrimers is an effective and facile way to simplify the tedious repetitive steps of preparation and separation. Since POSS allows eight branches to radiate from a silicon-oxygen right cubic core, the dendrimers can be constructed in a well-controlled globular, three-dimensional framework, and large numbers of peripheral groups can be obtained at relatively low generation numbers. As a kind of novel nano-hybrid supermolecules, POSS-based dendrimers have attracted considerable interest in materials science. In this review, we briefly introduce the synthetic approaches of some typical POSS-based dendrimers categorized by the different chemical composition of branching units, and then focus on the potential functions and applications of this nano-hybrid material in the field of catalysis, gene and drug delivery, liquid crystals, light harvesting and energy transfer. The specific and excellent properties imparted by the incorporation of POSS into dendrimers are also presented. Finally, the advances of POSS-based dendrimers are prospected.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers (HPs) are highly branched three-dimensional (3D) macromolecules. Their globular and dendritic architectures endow them with unique structures and properties such as abundant functional groups, intramolecular cavities, low viscosity, and high solubility. HPs can be facilely synthesized via a one-pot polymerization of traditional small molecular monomers or emerging macromonomers. The great development in synthetic strategies, from click polymerization (i.e., copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition, metal-free azide-alkyne cycloaddition, strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition, thiol-ene/yne addition, Diels-Alder cycloaddition, Menschutkin reaction, and aza-Michael addition) to recently reported multicomponent reactions, gives rise to diverse HPs with desirable functional/hetero-functional groups and topologies such as segmented or sequential ones. Benefiting from tailorable structures and correspondingly special properties, the achieved HPs have been widely applied in various fields such as light-emitting materials, nanoscience and technology, supramolecular chemistry, biomaterials, hybrid materials and composites, coatings, adhesives, and modifiers. In this review, we mainly focus on the progress in the structural control, synthesis, functionalization, and potential applications of both conventional and segmented HPs reported over the last decade.

Abstract:Over the past 15 years, hyperbranched polymers have received much attention due to their unique chemical and physical properties as well as their potential applications in coatings, additives, drug and gene delivery, macromolecular building blocks, nanotechnology, and supramolecular science. Hyperbranched polymers can be prepared by means of single-monomer methodology (SMM) and double-monomer methodology (DMM). In SMM, the polymerization of an ABn or latent ABn monomer leads to hyperbranched macromolecules. SMM consists of at least four components: (1) polycondensation of ABn monomers; (2) self-condensing vinyl polymerization; (3) self-condensing ring-opening polymerization; (4) proton-transfer polymerization. In DMM, direct polymerization of two suitable monomers or a monomer pair gives rise to hyperbranched polymers. A classical example of DMM, the polymerization of A2 and Bn (n>2) monomers, is well known. Recently, a novel DMM based on the in situ formation of ABn intermediates from specific monomer pairs has been developed. This form of DMM is designated as ‘couple-monomer methodology’ (CMM) to clearly represent the method of polymerization. Many commercially available chemicals can be used as the monomers in these systems, which should extend the availability and accessibility of hyperbranched polymers with various new end groups, architectures and properties. Because a number of comprehensive reviews have been published on SMM, research involving DMM is emphasized here. In addition, recent developments in the modification, functionalization and application of hyperbranched polymers are described.

Abstract:As an important branch of polymer field, hyperbranched polymers have developed rapidly recently, which have been applied in various fields because of its outstanding biodegradability and biocompatibility, especially in biology and coatings. According to reaction mechanism, the fabrication methods of hyperbranched polymers include polycondensation, ring-opening polymerization, living polymerization and other new methods. These methods are all environmental-friendly and high-efficient to generate hyperbranched polymers, and are valuable for industrialization, but there are still some defects such as the structure of the polymer is not regular enough, the composition of the polymer is too single, or the partial synthesis method is complicated. In this work, on the basis of previous studies, the preparation methods of hyperbranched polymers and their applications in various fields were reviewed, and the development trend of hyperbranched polymers was analyzed.

Abstract:A facile synthetic route to functional hyperbranched polymers is developed. Arylene bipropiolates (HC C-CO2-Ar-O2C-C CH; 1-4) are readily prepared from a one-step esterification reaction between commercially available propiolic acid and arylene diols. Polycyclotrimerizations of 1-4 proceed regioselectively in reflux dimethylformamide (DMF), giving hyperbranched poly[1,3,5-tri(aroxy-carbonyl)phenylene]s (hb-P1-hb-P4) of high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 8.3 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 82%). The polymers possess perfect 1,3,5-regiostructures and high degrees of branching (DB similar to 88%). Little weights are lost when the polymers are heated to 390 degrees C under nitrogen or 380 degrees C in air. The polymers are highly transparent, allowing almost all light in the entire visible spectral region to transmit through. Thin solid film of hb-P1 shows high refractive indices (RI = 1.6255-1.681) in the wavelength region of 400-1700 nm, extremely high modified Abbe number (nu(D)' = 1030.7), and very low optical dispersion (D' = 0.00097). Its RI values can be modulated and its thin films can be cross-linked by UV irradiation, enabling ready generation of negative photoresist patterns.

Abstract:This paper presents a new synthetic route to hyperbranched polymer. An arylene bipropiolate monomer, dimethylmethylenebis(1,4-phenylene) bipropiolate, was prepared by a one-step esterification reaction of bisphenol A with propiolic acid. Polycyclotrimrtization of the monomer was effected by reflux in dimethylformamide (DMF), producing a soluble hyperbranched poly(aroxycarbonylphenylene) in a good yield. The polymer was perfectly branched with a degree of branching of 100%.

Abstract:The synthesis, characterization, physical properties, and applications of branched polyesters are discussed. This review describes recent efforts in the synthesis of statistically and tailored branched systems, and performance advantages compared to linear counterparts. In particular, an emphasis is placed on long-chain branching, where the branches are sufficiently long enough to form entanglements. Step-growth polymerization methodologies that employ various combinations of multi and mono-functional groups to achieve different levels of branching are reviewed in detail. The performance of branched polyesters, including behavior in dilute and semi-dilute solutions, and melt and solid-state properties are discussed. The implications of topological parameters including branch length, number of branches, and branching architecture on rheological performance are also reviewed. Although the majority of this review focuses on the synthesis and rheological behavior of branched polyesters, some discussion is devoted to the influence of branching on solid-state properties, sub-micron fiber formation, and controlled biodegradation for drug-delivery applications. Finally, a perspective of future directions in high performance applications for branched polyesters is provided.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers, as one kind of three dimensional macromolecules with globular and dendritic architectures, have unique properties of good solubility, low viscosity, topological structure, a lot of functional groups, etc. Over the past decades, the hyperbranched polymers have attracted more and more attention and been widely applied in diverse areas including coatings, additives, biomaterials, supramolecular chemistry, nanoscience and technology, photoelectricmaterials, and so on. Click polymerization with the advantages of facile monomers accessibility, mild reaction conditions and high reaction efficiency has been developed into a sort of powerful polymerization tool for the synthesis of polymers with well-defined molecular structures and advanced functional properties. This method has also been extensively used in the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers. This review mainly summarizes the progress on the synthesis of the hyperbranched polymers via alkyne-based click polymerizations in the last 5 years. The Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne click polymerization could readily produce 1,4-regioregular hyperbranched polytriazoles, whereas the Ru(II)-catalyzed azide-alkyne click polymerization could generate 1,5-regioregular hyperbranched polytriazoles. Meanwhile, the azide-alkyne click polymerizations under metal-free conditions were also developed through the ingenious design of monomers. Metal-free click polymerization of activated alkyne and azide monomers could efficiently produce hyperbranched polytriazoles with fraction of 1,4-isomers up to 91.7%. The obtained polytriazoles are thermally stable and well soluble in most common solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane, N,N-dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide. Moreover, the photo- and thermo-initiated as well as spontaneous thiol-yne click polymerizations could be used to facilely prepare sulfur-containing hyperbranched polymers. The thiol-yne addition process could be fine-tuned by the control of the polymerization condition, and hyperbranched polymers with diverse topological structures could be provided. The properties and applications including aggregation-induced emission, sensitive explosive detection, self-healing, high refractive index and fluorescent patterning etc, of resultant hyperbranched polymers were also briefly reviewed. In addition, the promising opportunities and directions in this area were also discussed.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polyphosphate polyesters (HPPs) as a special class of hyperbranched polymers have attracted increased interest and have been intensively studied, because of peculiar structures, excellent biocompatibility, flexibility in physicochemical properties, biodegradability, water soluble, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. HPPs can be divided into phosphates as monomers and phosphates as end groups. In this article, the classification, general synthesis, modifications, and applications of HPP are reviewed. In addition, recent developments in the application of HPP are described, such as modified or functionalized by end capping and hypergrafting to improve the performances in polymer blends, coatings, flame retardant, leather. Furthermore, the modifications and application of HPPs in biomedical materials, such as drug delivery and bone regeneration were discussed. In summary, the hyperbranched polymer enlarges its application range and improves its application performance compared with conventional polymer. In the future, more new HPPs composite materials will be developed through hyperbranched technique. This review of HPPs will provide useful theoretical basis and technical support for the development of new hyperbranched polymer material.

Synthesis and Characterization of Aliphatic-Aromatic Hyperbranched Polyesters

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers possess special architectures and have potential applications in various areas. In this study, two AB2 monomers, dipropyl 5-(hydroxyethoxy) isophthalate (I) and 5-hydroxyethoxyisophthaic acid (II), were prepared. By bulk polycondensation of each monomer, two aliphatic-aromatic hyperbranched polyesters were prepared and characterized by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Compared with all-aromatic hyperbranched polyesters, the prepared polymers showed lower glass transition temperatures in connection with the moderate decrease in their decomposition temperatures.

Abstract:The three-dimensional structures of hyperbranched materials have made them attractive in many important applications. However, the preparation of hyperbranched materials remains challenging. The hyperbranched materials from addition polymerization have gained attention, but are still confined to only a low level of branching and often low yield. Moreover, the complication of synthesis only allows a few specialized monomers and inimers to be used. Here we report a 'Vinyl Oligomer Combination' strategy; a versatile approach that overcomes these difficulties and allows facile synthesis of highly branched polymeric materials from readily available multi-vinyl monomers, which have long been considered as formidable starting materials in addition polymerization. We report the alteration of the growth manner of polymerization by controlling the kinetic chain length, together with the manipulation of chain growth conditions, to achieve veritable hyperbranched materials, which possess nearly 70% branch ratios as well as numerous vinyl functional groups.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) have been studied for over three decades now; yet there are several interesting aspects that continue to draw the attention of researchers worldwide. This is because of the simplicity of synthesis, their unique globular structure and the numerous peripherally located functional groups that can be utilized to impart variety of attributes, such as core-shell amphiphilicity, Janus amphiphilicity, clickable polymeric scaffolds, multifunctional crosslinkers, etc. Several reviews have been written on HBPs with a focus on synthetic strategies, structural diversity, and their potential applications; in this short feature article, we have taken an alternate approach to highlight some of the unique structural features of HBPs, the influence of these on their properties, and their versatility and adaptability for the generation of several interesting functional polymeric systems. In the latter half, we focus on the utilization of HBPs as multifunctional scaffolds, that rely on the numerous peripheral terminal groups. We conclude by drawing a structuro-functional analogy between the range of peripherally functionalized HBPs and several other more complex polymeric systems; this we believe will serve as a visual sounding board that encourages the development of several other applications for this class of unique polymers.

Abstract:Environmental issues, including climate change and plastic pollution, have compelled scientists to look at alternatives to traditional polymers. Scientists are actively researching biobased hyperbranched polymers, an emerging group of highly branched polymers made from sustainable resources. They are seen as a promising alternative to petrochemical-based polymers. Hyperbranched polymers can be made using single- and double-monomer techniques. This review provides an extensive perspective of the synthesis and properties of biobased hyperbranched polymers made from a variety of renewable starting materials, including starch, lignin, vanillin, levulinic acid, furfurylamine, ferulic acid, citric acid, adipic acid, succinic acid, and tannic acid and various vegetable oils have been investigated till date. Most of these biobased hyperbranched polymers have been created using vegetable oil as their raw materials because numerous vegetable oil derivatives like monoglycerides, polyols, and fatty acids can be potentially used as monomers for the polymer. In the paper, specifics about modified biobased hyperbranched polymers, their composites, nanocomposites, and functionalized versions are highlighted. These materials belong to a class that combines the special characteristics of hyperbranched polymers with the reinforcing and functionalizing effects of fillers like silver, carbon, silicone, clay, etc. Lastly, the paper also discusses the various practical applications of biobased hyperbranched polymers in various industrial sectors and their prospects for the future.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polysiloxane polymers with multivinyl functionality were designed and synthesized through a one-step and one-pot deactivation enhanced atom transfer polymerization (DE-ATRP) approach from the copolymerization of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) macromonomers and divinylbenzene (DVB). Various feed ratios of siloxane-based monomer and divinyl monomers were investigated. We showed that even at DVB concentrations as high as 80 mol % in the feed, 65% yield of hyperbranched polymer could be obtained without gelation because the DE-ATRP suppressed the rapid formation of macronetwork structures. The molecular weight, polydispersity, macromolecular structure of hyperbranched poly(DVB-co-PDMS) as well as its viscosity in silicone oil were characterized by GPC-MALLS, H-1 NMR and rheometer. By tracking the relationship between the radius of gyration, elution volume and molecular weight from MALLS analysis, solid evidences of the highly branched and condensed structure of the polymers were obtained. Furthermore, the oil thickening experiments demonstrate that this hyperbranched polymer can act as a well-controlled viscosity-modifier for Silicone oils, which potentially will have important application in coating, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
