Abstract:Aluminum‐lithium alloy, being the lightest aluminum‐based alloy, holds significant potential for applications in the aerospace and military sectors. Currently, alloying treatment stands as a crucial method for enhancing the comprehensive performance of aluminum‐lithium alloy. This paper provides an overview of the production process of aluminum‐lithium alloys, encompassing smelting and deformation processing characteristics. Additionally, it outlines the developmental history of the chemical composition for the primary grades of aluminum‐lithium alloy, detailing the copper (Cu) and lithium (Li) content of the main alloying elements. And discusses the influence of various microalloying elements on the alloy's properties.Additionally, it summarizes the structure, properties, and precipitation morphology of the three primary strengthening phases formed by the alloying of aluminum‐lithium alloys: T1 (Al2CuLi), θ′ (Al2Cu), and δ′ (Al3Li). The analysis also examines the impact of anisotropy on the mechanical properties of the primary dispersion. Finally, the paper addresses the challenges involved in alloying aluminum‐lithium alloys and proposes key research directions for element composition design. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Al-Li alloys have attracted considerable attention in the key fields of aviation, aerospace, and navigation owing to their high specific strength and stiffness, good corrosion and fatigue resistance. Al-Li alloys have been studied and applied for decades in the United States, Russia and other countries. The researches and applications of Al-Li alloys in China have also achieved great progress through a large number of science and technology projects. However, there is still a certain gap between China and developed countries. Based on the development of Al-Li alloys all over the world, the alloying techniques, aging precipitation behavior, and strengthening and toughening mechanism of Al-Li alloys were discussed. At the same time, the new processes and heat treatments of Al-Li alloys were summarized. Finally, the existing problems in the development and application of Al-Li alloys in China are put forward and the development direction of Al-Li alloy is prospected.

Abstract:In order to face the fierce substitution competition from the composites and other structural materials and meet the strict requirements of new generation airplane for the service performance of the aluminium alloys, scientists and engineers need to keep developing new aluminium alloys with comprehensive performance and their processing technology, and to investigate the processing principle and technology of material/structural parts integration. Compared with the composites, new generation aluminium-lithium alloys are lighter, with lower risk, less expensive to manufacture, operate and repair than composites-intensive planes. It becomes an important technology to support new generation airplanes by new aluminium-lithium alloys in combination with advanced structural concepts. The development history of aluminium-lithium alloys and typical alloy compositions, properties and applications in different stages are briefly reviewed, as well as the superplasticity technology of aluminium-lithium alloys and their application in aerospace industries. The development trade of composition design and microstructure control in new generation aluminium-lithium alloys are introduced, and their application prospect is discussed.

Abstract:Recently, a high strength Aluminium-Lithium alloy with small additions of Mg,Zn,Mn is developed for aircraft applications. The promising mechanical properties with sigma(b) = 657 MPa, sigma(0.2) = 635 MPa,delta = 4.9%, E = 76 GPa have be obtained. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and transmission electron microscope(TEM) analysis show that the alloy is strengthened primarily by equilibrium T1 which is considered as the most effective strengthening phase. The metastable precipitate phases such as delta' (Al3Li), S'(Al2CuMg), theta (Al2Cu) are not observed in the alloy. It is also found that the T1 phase on subgrain is appreciably larger than that in matrix, and there is no coarse precipitate at grain boundaries and no precipitation-free zones (PFZ).

Abstract:Al-Li alloys are attractive for military and aerospace applications because their properties are superior to those of conventional Al alloys. Their exceptional properties are attributed to the addition of Li into the Al matrix, and the technical reasons for adding Li to the Al matrix are presented. The developmental history and applications of Al-Li alloys over the last few years are reviewed. The main issue of Al-Li alloys is anisotropic behavior, and the main reasons for the anisotropic tensile properties and practical methods to reduce it are also introduced. Additionally, the strengthening mechanisms and deformation behavior of Al-Li alloys are surveyed with reference to the composition, processing, and microstructure interactions. Additionally, the methods for improving the formability, strength, and fracture toughness of Al-Li alloys are investigated. These practical methods have significantly reduced the anisotropic tensile properties and improved the formability, strength, and fracture toughness of Al-Li alloys. However, additional endeavours are required to further enhance the crystallographic texture, control the anisotropic behavior, and improve the formability and damage tolerance of Al-Li alloys.

Abstract:The ever increasing need for high strength, improved performance, lightweight and cost-effective materials has resulted in significant improvements and development of new aluminium alloys for structural applications. Lithium additions to aluminium have the potential for providing a class of high strength alloys with exceptional properties suitable for weight-critical applications. In this paper, published studies of composition-processing-microstructure relationships are discussed. Contributions to strength of the solid solution are discussed with reference to the presence of lithium in solid solution, the presence of coherent, ordered precipitates in the matrix and the co-precipitation of binary, ternary and more complex strengthening phases. Microstructural influences on strength are discussed with reference to metallurgical variables. These variables include the intrinsic microstructural features; the presence of dispersoids, the nature and type of matrix strengthening precipitates and the presence of denuded zones adjacent to grain boundaries. The extrinsic and intrinsic micromechanisms governing the deformation characteristics and fracture behaviour are critically examined with specific reference to ageing condition of the alloy, the matrix slip characteristics, and the nature, volume fraction and distribution of strengthening precipitates. The deleterious effects of strain localization and the exacerbating effect of precipitate-free zones are also highlighted. The micromechanics governing the fracture processes are examined and the sequence of events in the fracture process is reviewed in light of the specific role of several concurrent factors involving nature and volume fraction of second-phase particles, deformation mode, and dislocation-microstructure interactions. Past attempts made to improve the tensile ductility and mechanical response of these alloys are also examined so as to provide a better basis for understanding processing-microstructure-deformation interactions.

Abstract:This study is to investigate the formability of a new generation Al-Li-Cu-Mg alloy sheet through uniaxial tensile tests. The yield strength, tensile strength, elongation rate of seven different orientations of the sheet material were obtained. The tension curves of different orientations were plotted and compared to work out the anisotropic index. The constitutive equation of this new Al-Li-Cu-Mg alloy was established on the basis of the tensile test data. The characteristic parameters in Hill48 and Barlat89 yield criteria were calculated through the experiment curves and the yield locus of this Al-Li-Cu-Mg alloy was also obtained. Then, the characteristics of the anisotropic behavior of this alloy during the forming process were analyzed on the basis of the First Strength Theory and the Third Strength Theory. In the end, the cross section of fractured specimens were observed using Scanning Electron Microscopy ( SEM) and the results indicated that, if the elongation rate increases, the population of dimples increases correspondingly, in the contrary, if the elongation rate decreases, more fracture belt were observed. The different features of the fracture along different orientations confirm the significant anisotropy of the material.

Abstract:Due to the prominent advantages of low density, high elastic modulus, high specific strength and specific stiffness, cast Al-Li alloys are suitable metallic materials for manufacturing complex large-sized components and are ideal structural materials for aerospace, defense and military industries. On the basis of the microstructural characteristics of cast Al-Li alloys, exploring the role of alloying and micro-alloying can stabilize their dominant position and further expand their application scope. In this review, the development progress of cast Al-Li alloys was summarized comprehensively. According to the latest research highlights, the influence of alloying and heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties was systematically analyzed. The potential methods to improve the alloy performance were concluded. In response to the practical engineering requirements of cast Al-Li alloys, the scientific challenges and future research directions were discussed and prospected.

Abstract:The three development stages of Al-Li alloys and their corresponding property features are briefly reviewed.The alloying function of main alloying elements Cu and Li and the micro-alloying elements Mg,Ag,Zn,Mn,Sc,Zr,In and rare earth Ce are discussed in detail.The micro-alloying elements can modify the size,morphology and distribution of the precipitates,or stimulate the precipitation of the new strengthening phase in Al-Li alloys,and in addition,are able to refine the grain structure and control the recrystallization.Meanwhile,the practical application and future application plans of Al-Li alloys in aerospace industry are summarized.
Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al-Li Alloys with Different Li Contents Prepared by Selective Laser Melting

Abstract:Research on the development of new lightweight Al-Li alloys using a selective laser melting process has great potential for industrial applications. This paper reports on the development of novel aluminum-lithium alloys using selective laser melting technology. Al-Cu-Li-Mg-Ag-Sc-Zr pre-alloyed powders with lithium contents of 1 wt.%, 2 wt.% and 3 wt.%, respectively, were prepared by inert gas atomization. After SLM process optimization, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-printed specimens were investigated. The densifications of the three newly developed alloys were 99.51%, 98.96% and 92.01%, respectively. They all had good formability, with the lithium loss rate at about 15%. The as-printed alloy with 1% Li content presented good comprehensive properties, with a yield strength of 413 ± 16 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 461 ± 12 MPa, and an elongation of 14 ± 1%. The three alloys exhibited a layered molten pool stacking morphology and had a typical heterostructure. The columnar crystals and equiaxed fine grains were alternately arranged, and most of the precipitated phases were enriched at the grain boundaries. The change in Li content mainly affected the precipitation of the Cu-containing phase. When the Li content was 1 wt.%, the following occured: θ phase, T1 phase and TB phase. When Li increased to 2 wt.%, T1 and T2 phases precipitated together. When Li reaches 3 wt.%, δ' phase precipitated with T2 phase. This study provides useful guidance for the future SLM forming of new crack-free and high-strength Al-Li alloys.

Abstract:In the global pursuit of energy conservation, reduction in consumption and emissions, as well as lightweighting, 5xxx-series aluminum alloys have emerged as a promising lightweight and high-strength material with a wide range of applications in aerospace, transportation, building structures, medical devices, and more. However, it is worth noting that 5XXX-series aluminum alloys belong to a category of non-heat-treatable reinforced aluminum alloys with limited means of enhancing their properties through heat treatment. Consequently, the development of high-performance 5XXX-series aluminum alloys poses a significant challenge. This paper provides an overview of the research progress on 5xxx-series aluminum alloys while discussing the current state of research regarding the influence of microalloying elements on their microstructure and properties. Furthermore, it elucidates the emerging trends in synergistic regulation between deformation processes and heat treatment processes for enhancing organizational refinement and improving alloy properties. Additionally, this study analyzes the reinforcement mechanism responsible for the exceptional properties exhibited by 5xxx-series aluminum alloys. Lastly, it discusses the exceptional properties exhibited by 5xxx-series alloys along with their primary areas of application. The findings presented herein can serve as a valuable reference for future advancements in advanced high-performance 5xxx-series aluminum alloys.
A Novel High-Strength Al-Li Alloy Printed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion: Microstructural Evolution and Strengthening Mechanism

Abstract:This paper obtained an additively manufactured high-strength Al-Li alloy by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) based on a third generation AA2195 alloy powder raw material. The relationship between the process optimization, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties of the as-printed (AP) and heat-treated (HT) specimens was established for the first time to explain the intergranular fracture sensibility during LPBF and reveal the dominant precipitation strengthening mechanism induced by the subsequent heat treatment. The precipitation order of AP Al-Li alloy at the last stage of the solidification process was: L (Liquid phase) →T2 (Al6CuLi3) + θ′(Al2Cu) + δ′/β′ (Al3(Li,Zr)) + T (LiAlSi) + Ω (AlCuMgAg). The micro-cracks caused by a relatively high grain boundary coverage of interconnected film-like eutectic phases, as well as micro-voids caused by the localized slip between the coarse T2-phases and soft precipitate-free zones, resulted in the high intergranular fracture sensibility. The well-designed T6 heat treatment of 515 °C/60 min solution treatment and 170 °C/6 h aging treatment was conducted to maximize the precipitation strengthening by T1-phases. The precipitation order of HT Al-Li alloy was supersaturated solid solution → GP zone + δ′/β′ → θ′ + T1 (Al2CuLi) + ω (Al7Cu2Fe) + β′. The presence of continuously distributed T1-cells along the grain boundaries was not only capable of providing a pinning effect on dislocations movement and boundary migration, but also able to shorten the pile-up distance on the slip plane. Such phenomena improved the resistance ability of Al-Li alloys to mechanical damage and permitted a significant strength enhancement.
An aluminum-lithium alloy produced by laser powder bed fusion

Abstract:Aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloys are promising to replace traditional high-strength aluminum alloys in aerospace and military industries due to their low density, high specific strength, and excellent corrosion resistance. However, there is little research focused on the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of Al-Li alloys due to their poor weldability and high crack susceptibility. In this study, the feasibility of the Al-Li alloy fabricated by LPBF was investigated. The effect of the processing parameters on the densification and crack formation behavior was studied. Finally, after optimizing the processing parameters, crack-free and nearly fully dense 2195 Al-Li alloy 3Dprinted samples were obtained. A relative density of 99.92% and a microhardness of 89.1 HV were achieved.

Abstract:Modern industrial development has put forward higher demands on the performance of metallic structural materials, especially in terms of light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance. All of these characteristics are of particular importance in transportation fields. As one of the most representative structural materials, aluminum and alloys have exhibited significant advantages in light weight. Most of the alloys are prominently featured in one specific aspect. The overall performance still needs to be improved. In recent years, researchers have developed Al-Mg-Zn(-Cu) alloy, a new wrought aluminum alloy, whose design strategy is known as "crossover alloying". This novel alloy is an age-hardened Al-Mg alloy with a T-Mg-32(Al, X)(49) (X is Zn, Cu) phase as the main strengthening phase. This system of alloys exhibits excellent properties in terms of strength and corrosion resistance, which makes it promising for applications in automotive, marine, aerospace and other fields. This paper summarizes the research progress of Al-Mg-Zn(-Cu) alloy, and analyzes the basic methods of microstructural control in terms of composition design and property research. Finally, the future directions of this alloy are proposed.

Abstract:As a heat treatable aluminum alloy to be used in T6 and T8 temper, belongs to Al-Cu-Li system, a novel high-strength aluminum-lithium alloy 2A97 was developed. In order to improve the relationships of strength and ductility and fracture toughness, and to urge the applications in the aeronautical and aerospace industries, the effects of normal heat treatments and thermomechanical heat treatments on the mechanical properties and fracture toughness were investigated by Transmission Electron Microscope(TEM), Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM), tensile test, and fracture toughness test. The results show that for the alloy aged at 135 °C for 24 h after quenching and 4 percent plastic deformation, its microstructures are strengthened by strain hardening and precipitation hardening, consisting of fine T 1 phase, θ′′/θ′ phase and δ′ phase densely and homogeneously distributed in the matrix. It yields optimum relationship of strength and ductility, fracture toughness, its σ 0.2 , σ b and δ 5 are 454 MPa, 536 MPa, and 11.8%, respectively. It yields 43.5 MPa·m 1/2 of K q values higher than that of 42.5 MPa·m1/2 in T6 temper. The fracture morphologies of impact tensile samples of fracture toughness test and normal tensile test were observed, indicating the dominance of intergranular failure and subintergranular failure with some dimples and trangranular failure.
