Abstract:Ferrofluids are a special category of smart nanomaterials which shows normal liquid behavior coupled with superparamagnetic properties. One of the earliest and most prospective applications of ferrofluids is in damping, which has prominent advantages compared with conventional damping devices: simplicity, flexibility and reliability. This paper presents the basic principles that play a major role in the design of ferrofluid damping devices. The characteristics of typical ferrofluid damping devices including dampers, vibration isolators, and dynamic vibration absorbers are compared and summarized, and then recent progress of vibration energy harvesters based on ferrofluid is briefly described. Additionally, we proposed a novel ferrofluid dynamic vibration absorber in this paper, and its damping efficiency was verified with experiments. In the end, the critical problems and research directions of the ferrofluid damping technology in the future are raised.

Abstract:Ferrofluids are a type of nanometer-scale functional material with fluidity and superparamagnetism. They are composed of ferromagnetic particles, surfactants, and base liquids. The main characteristics of ferrofluids include magnetization, the magnetoviscous effect, and levitation characteristics. There are many mature commercial ferrofluid damping applications based on these characteristics that are widely used in numerous fields. Furthermore, some ferrofluid damping studies such as those related to vibration energy harvesters and biomedical devices are still in the laboratory stage. This review paper summarizes typical ferrofluid dampers and energy harvesting systems from the 1960s to the present, including ferrofluid viscous dampers, ferrofluid inertia dampers, tuned magnetic fluid dampers (TMFDs), and vibration energy harvesters. In particular, it focuses on TMFDs and vibration energy harvesters because they have been the hottest research topics in the ferrofluid damping field in recent years. This review also proposes a novel magnetic fluid damper that achieves energy conversion and improves the efficiency of vibration attenuation. Finally, we discuss the potential challenges and development of ferrofluid damping in future research.

Abstract:The term Ferrofluids is used to refer to the coherent colloidal suspension of nanometer size ferromagnetic particles or their oxides in base fluids such as oil, water etc. Due to decrease in size to nanometric level, the property of ferromagnetism shifts towards super-magnetism. It creates an opportunity to modify the thermophysical parameters of magnetic nanofluid when exposed to exterior magnetization field. A plethora of research on Ferrofluids has made way for varied applications ranging from dynamic loudspeakers, computer hard drives to room cleaning robots which exploit their exceptional operating characteristics. The field of thermal engineering in relation to the applications of ferrofluids have been explored extensively in the recent past. Innovative outlooks relating to thermal control of miniaturized systems have opened. Major properties which are under study by researchers are related to area of enhanced thermal conductivity along with improvement in thermal performance of the magnetic nanofluid. These studies involve analysis pertaining ferrofluid's heat transfer along with the controlling of parameters when external magnetic field is present. The alternative solutions to heat transfer can be provided with ferrofluids having improved thermal conductivity and the ability to externally control and change heat transfer coefficient. At present, the power supplied to miniaturized systems is being provided through batteries which have several limitations such as big size, shorter lifetime, holding hazardous and unsafe materials and troubles in replacement. Due to these limitations, an energy harvester based upon ferrofluid could provide an alternative source of energy. Recent studies also focus on the development of energy-based harvester based upon vibrations. In this context, this paper will try to provide a wide-ranging review of present and developing applications of ferrofluids with special focus on the study of heat transfer and energy harvesters.

Abstract:Magnetic fluids(MF) are stable colloidal solution systems consisting of a mixture of nanoscale magnetic particles, surfactants, and a base carrier fluid. Magnetic fluid sealing(MFS) technology has been widely used in gas and vacuum conditions, and research on liquid seals is also receiving increasing attention. Magnetic fluid seals have many advantages, such as “zero” leakage, green environmental protection, long service life, reliability and stability. The current review on the subject is limited to the form of magneto-fluidic applications, and there is no clear description of the specific structure and classification. In this paper, the research progress of magnetic fluid in the field of vacuum, gas, liquid and dust prevention is reviewed, and the magnetic fluid component materials are introduced in a categorized and summarized way, including sealing characteristics, liquid–liquid interface stability, simulation analysis and structural design. Finally, the future development in the field of magnetic fluid seals is envisioned. In the future, the magnetic fluid sealing technology is expected to further innovate and develop, bringing more breakthrough solutions to the sealing field.

Abstract:Ferrofluids are colloidal suspensions of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) within aqueous or nonaqueous liquids that exhibit strong magnetic properties. These magnetic properties allow ferrofluids to be manipulated and controlled when exposed to magnetic fields. This review aims to provide the current scope and research opportunities regarding the methods of synthesis of nanoparticles, surfactants, and carrier liquids for ferrofluid production, along with the rheology and applications of ferrofluids within the fields of medicine, water treatment, and mechanical engineering. A ferrofluid is composed of IONPs, a surfactant that coats the magnetic IONPs to prevent agglomeration, and a carrier liquid that suspends the IONPs. Coprecipitation and thermal decomposition are the main methods used for the synthesis of IONPs. Despite the fact that thermal decomposition provides precise control on the nanoparticle size, coprecipitation is the most used method, even when the oxidation of iron can occur. This oxidation alters the ratio of maghemite/magnetite, influencing the magnetic properties of ferrofluids. Strategies to overcome iron oxidation have been proposed, such as the use of an inert atmosphere, adjusting the Fe(II) and Fe(III) ratio to 1:2, and the exploration of other metals with the oxidation state +2. Surfactants and carrier liquids are chosen according to the ferrofluid application to ensure stability. Hence, a compatible carrier liquid (polar or nonpolar) is selected, and then, a surfactant, mainly a polymer, is embedded in the IONPs, providing a steric barrier. Due to the variety of surfactants and carrier liquids, the rheological properties of ferrofluids are an important response variable evaluated when synthesizing ferrofluids. There are many reported applications of ferrofluids, including biosensing, medical imaging, medicinal therapy, magnetic nanoemulsions, and magnetic impedance. Other applications include water treatment, energy harvesting and transfer, and vibration control. To progress from synthesis to applications, research is still ongoing to ensure control of the ferrofluids' properties.

Abstract:Magnetic nanofluids, also referred to as ferromagnetic particle levitation systems, are materials with highly responsive magnetic properties. Due to their magnetic responsiveness, excellent controllability, favorable thermal characteristics, and versatility, magnetic nanofluids have sparked considerable interest in both industrial manufacturing and scientific research. Magnetic nanofluids have been used and developed in diverse areas such as materials science, physics, chemistry and engineering due to their remarkable characteristics such as rapid magnetic reaction, elastic flow capacities, and tunable thermal and optical properties. This paper provides a full and in-depth introduction to the diverse uses of ferrofluids including material fabrication, fluid droplet manipulation, and biomedicine for the power and machinery sectors. As a result, magnetic nanofluids have shown promising applications and have provided innovative ideas for multidisciplinary research in biology, chemistry, physics and materials science. Furthermore, the review addresses the obstacles and limitations associated with integrating ferrofluids into solar technologies, proposing potential solutions and outlining future research directions.

Abstract:Magnetorheological materials refer to field-response smart materials whose properties are controllable with a magnetic field, including fluid, grease, elastomer, and gel. The unique magnetorheological effect exhibited by these smart materials is a physical phenomenon where physics and engineering intersect and has extensive application prospects in modern machinery. In electro-mechanical systems, magnetorheological materials offer a superior design method for mechanical devices used in the fields of transmission, damping, and braking. It is important to control the magnetorheological materials for advancing the design philosophy of modern electro-mechanical devices. Hence, this paper presents a recent progressive review on the fundamentals of magnetorheological materials and numerous applications. Firstly, an introduction to the magnetorheological effect and different types of magnetorheological materials are presented in this review. Then, the individual and coupled effects of sedimentation, temperature, and magnetic field on magnetorheological materials are discussed. Finally, magnetorheological materials-based devices have been extensively reviewed, including actuator, clutch, damper, brake, pump, valve, and robot, thus aiming to provide useful information for facilitating the design of complex electro-mechanical systems.

Abstract:In recent years,wastewater treatment technologies have undergone continuous development,and a large number of new methods and means have emerged.Among them,degrading pollutants in wastewater by using magnetic field has become a new type of wastewater treatment technology(especially high concentration and low concentration of pollutants).The magnetic technology can be used alone or combined with other technologies.The degradation process has low energy consumption,easy control,no secondary pollution involved,especially,low cost,which makes magnetization a highly promising technology in wastewater treatment.The development process of magnetic technology in wastewater treatment at home and abroad in recent years is described,including the mechanism of magnetic wastewater treatment and the practical application of the magnetic technology in treatment of refractory wastewaters.Future applications of magnetic technology in wastewater treatment are prospected.
