Abstract:The phenomenon of magnetostriction and its fundamental are presented briefly, and developmental history of Magnetostrictive Materials are reviewed and summarized. The current application research of REFe2 Giant Magnetostrictive Materials(GMM) in various fields in China and west are systematically introduced, especially the applications in mechatronics engineerings. The principle and structure of these devices are proposed, and their performances are also stated. The application of GMM in future is also discussed.

Abstract:The magnetoelectric (ME) materials and related devices have been attracting increasing research attention over the last few years. They exhibit strong ME coupling effect at room temperature, and electric field control of magnetization or magnetic field control of ferroelectric polarization can be achieved. The ME coupling effect brings novel functionalities to develop ultra-fast, low-power, and miniaturized electronics. Recent progress shows the performance of ME materials is further improved and the materials are used to develop many new types of electronics such as high-speed memory, radio frequency resonator, compact ME antenna, and weak magnetic field sensor. In this review, we present the overview in those fields with emphasis on both the opportunities and challenges for the application of ME materials and devices in the cutting-edge technologies.

Abstract:Multiferroic composites possess the coupling effect among mechanical, electrical, and magnetic ordering, showing potential applications in compact, fast, and low-power magnetoelectric devices. Owing to the increasing application demand, the researches of device design, micro-/nano-fabrication, and performance test of magnetoelectric devices have made continuous progress. In this review, we briefly introduce several prototype devices based on magnetoelectric coupling, analyze the noteworthy application techniques, and summarize the working mechanisms and performances of devices including tunable inductors, RF/microwave filters, magnetoelectric memories, energy harvesters, magnetoelectric sensors, magnetoelectric antennas, etc. Besides, we discuss the issues and challenges in researches of multiferroic magnetoelectric devices, and present the perspectives for improving the device performance.

Abstract:Development of superconducting magnet science and technology requires a magnetic field with high strength and good quality. The pursuit of extremely high magnetic field is an eternal scientific goal for scientists and engineers. It is an exciting cutting-edge technology with full of challenges and has been essential for many significant discoveries in science and technology. Combined with power-electronic devices and related software, a whole magnet system can be built up as the key component of vari-ous types of scientific instruments and other equipment, and can be fund widespread applications in scientific research and industry. Magnet technology is currently playing a more and more important role in scientific and technological progress. Ultra-high magnetic fields help to give us much deeper understanding of the world of matter and have special significance for research into the origins of life and disease prevention. In this review article, basic magnet principles, methods of generating mag-netic fields, magnetic field applications, and numerical methods for the design of magnet structures are briefly introduced and reviewed.

Abstract:Multiferroic magnetoelectric composite systems such as ferromagnetic‐ferroelectric heterostructures have recently attracted an ever‐increasing interest and provoked a great number of research activities, driven by profound physics from coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic orders, as well as potential applications in novel multifunctional devices, such as sensors, transducers, memories, and spintronics. In this Review, we try to summarize what remarkable progress in multiferroic magnetoelectric composite systems has been achieved in most recent few years, with emphasis on thin films; and to describe unsolved issues and new device applications which can be controlled both electrically and magnetically.

Abstract:Developing new strategies to advance the fundamental understanding of electrochemistry is crucial to mitigating multiple contemporary technological challenges. In this regard, magnetoelectrochemistry offers many strategic advantages in controlling and understanding electrochemical reactions that might be tricky to regulate in conventional electrochemical fields. However, the topic is highly interdisciplinary, combining concepts from electrochemistry, hydrodynamics, and magnetism with experimental outcomes that are sometimes unexpected. In this review, we survey recent advances in using a magnetic field in different electrochemical applications organized by the effect of the generated forces on fundamental electrochemical principles and focus on how the magnetic field leads to the observed results. Finally, we discuss the challenges that remain to be addressed to establish robust applications capable of meeting present needs by overcoming existing limitations.

Abstract:Magnetron is currently one kind of the most widely used vacuum electronic devices. The cathode, as the electronic source of the device, is the core of magnetrons. With the development of magnetrons, the requirements for cathode performance are also increasing, including thermal electron emission and secondary electron emission performance. This article reviews the development history of cathodes used in magnetrons, discusses the performance and application fields of various cathodes, and the relationship between performance and structure. However, there are still certain problems with various cathode materials that make it difficult to truly cover all magnetrons. The ongoing challenges relating to the magnetron cathodes have been discussed in this paper.

Abstract:One of the new materials that have recently attracted wide attention of researchers are magnetoelectric (ME) composites. Great interest in these materials is due to their properties associated with the transformation of electric polarization/magnetization under the influence of external magnetic/electric fields and the possibility of their use to create new devices. In the proposed review, ME magnetic field sensors based on the widely used structures Terfenol—PZT/PMN-PT, Metglas—PZT/PMN-PT, and Metglas—Lithium niobate, among others, are considered as the first applications of the ME effect in technology. Estimates of the parameters of ME sensors are given, and comparative characteristics of magnetic field sensors are presented. Taking into account the high sensitivity of ME magnetic field sensors, comparable to superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), we discuss the areas of their application.

Abstract:During the last few decades, magnetorheological (MR) elastomers have attracted a significant amount of attention for their enormous potential in engineering applications. Because they are a solid counterpart to MR fluids, MR elastomers exhibit a unique field-dependent material property when exposed to a magnetic field, and they overcome major issues faced in magnetorheological fluids, e.g. the deposition of iron particles, sealing problems and environmental contamination. Such advantages offer great potential for designing intelligent devices to be used in various engineering fields, especially in fields that involve vibration reduction and isolation. This paper presents a state of the art review on the recent progress of MR elastomer technology, with special emphasis on the research and development of MR elastomer devices and their applications. To keep the integrity of the knowledge, this review includes a brief introduction of MR elastomer materials and follows with a discussion of critical issues involved in designing magnetorheological elastomer devices, i.e. operation modes, coil placements and principle fundamentals. A comprehensive review has been presented on the research and development of MR elastomer devices, including vibration absorbers, vibration isolators, base isolators, sensing devices, and so on. A summary of the research on the modeling mechanical behavior for both the material and the devices is presented. Finally, the challenges and the potential facing magnetorheological elastomer technology are discussed, and suggestions have been made based on the authors’ knowledge and experience.

Abstract:The introduction of magnetism into a solid material might significantly modulate its electronic transport behavior, thereby serving as a means to tune the thermoelectric properties that have attracted considerable research attention in recent years. In this review, an introduction to recent studies on the interplay of magnetism and the thermoelectric Seebeck and Nernst effects is given. Concerning the Seebeck effect, the influence of superparamagnetic nanoparticles on the electronic and phonon transport of conventional nonmagnetic thermoelectric materials, as well as the spin‐related thermoelectric transport phenomenon in magnetic materials, are discussed. Then, the Nernst effect‐related transverse thermoelectric transport properties in nonmagnetic and magnetic topological materials are summarized, followed by a short introduction to the Nernst devices. Last, a further outlook on this new research direction is offered.

Abstract:A new energy paradigm, consisting of greater reliance on renewable energy sources and increased concern for energy efficiency in the total energy lifecycle, has accelerated research into energy-related technologies. Due to their ubiquity, magnetic materials play an important role in improving the efficiency and performance of devices in electric power generation, conditioning, conversion, transportation, and other energy-use sectors of the economy. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art hard and soft magnets and magnetocaloric materials, with an emphasis on their optimization for energy applications. Specifically, the impact of hard magnets on electric motor and transportation technologies, of soft magnetic materials on electricity generation and conversion technologies, and of magnetocaloric materials for refrigeration technologies, are discussed. The synthesis, characterization, and property evaluation of the materials, with an emphasis on structure-property relationships, are discussed in the context of their respective markets, as well as their potential impact on energy efficiency. Finally, considering future bottlenecks in raw materials, options for the recycling of rare-earth intermetallics for hard magnets will be discussed.

Abstract:The background of magnetic information storage technology is first introduced, followed by a brief summary of the 100-year-evolution of the magnetic recording industry. Significant improvements in the technology have been strongly correlated to the advances in physics, material science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science, although applied magnetics has been crucial toovercoming the bottleneck in information storage technology. In the third part, it is shown that the development of micromagnetics and information storage technology are strongly correlated. In the last part, new frontiers and future challenges are analyzed with respect to physics and related subjects.

Abstract:Electrochemical machining (ECM) is widely used as a special process in the manufacturing of parts. The introduction of a magnetic field can improve manufacturing quality and increase the electrochemical reaction rate. Magnetic fields have a non-negligible influence on processes such as mass transfer, polarization, limiting current density, electrocrystallization, and anodic dissolution in electrochemical reactions. This paper provides a comprehensive review of magnetoelectrochemistry (MEC) techniques and the effect of magnetic fields on ECM. Starting from the MEC effects caused by magnetic fields acting on ECM, as well as Maxwell stress effects and magnetocaloric effect, which have not yet been studied in the field of ECM, this paper summarizes the effect of magnetic field on electrochemical reaction rate, flow field, physicochemical properties of electrolyte, and material formation in ECM, reviews existing magnetic field-assisted ECM technologies, and proposes future applications of magnetic fields in electrochemical additive manufacturing (ECAM) technologies. Finally, the paper provides a summary and outlook to serve as a reference for MEC processing.

Magnetically enhanced thermoelectrics: a comprehensive review

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials have great potential for waste-energyrecycling and solid-state cooling. Their conversion efficiency has attracted huge attention to the development of TE devices, and largely depends on the thermal and electrical transport properties. Magnetically enhanced thermoelectrics open up the possibility of making thermoelectricity a future leader in sustainable energy development and offer an intriguing platform for both fundamental physics and prospective applications. In this review, state-of-the-art TE materials are summarized from the magnetism point of view, via diagrams of the charges, lattices, orbits and spin degrees of freedom. Our fundamental knowledge of magnetically induced TE effects is discussed. The underlying thermo-electro-magnetic merits are discussed in terms of superparamagnetism- and magnetic-transition-enhanced electron scattering, field-dependent magnetoelectric coupling, and the magnon- and phonon-drag Seebeck effects. After these topics, we finally review several thermal-electronic and spin current-induced TE materials, highlight future possible strategies for further improvingZT, and also give a brief outline of ongoing research challenges and open questions in this nascent field.
