Abstract:The CuCrTe contact material made by melting in vacuum and its properties are introduced. The results of test show that it is a new type of contact material with properties better than those widely used in vacuum interrupters at present.

Abstract:The CuCrTe contact material prepared by smelting in vacuum and its properties are introduced, the results of test show it is a new type of contact material with better properties used in vacuum interrupters. Interrupting capacity of CuCrTe prepared by smelting in vacuum is better than that of CuCr50 manufactured by power metallurgy process, it's withstand voltage properties after interrupting current is not lower than that of CuCr50. When Te is added in CuCr, anti-welding properties of the CuCr contact material is improved. © 2004 IEEE.

Abstract:Because of deficiencies of CuCrTe contact material manufactured by powder metallurgy(PM) process and improving its breaking current capacity,the vacuum melting manufacturing process was used to manufacture CuCrTe contact material and its properties were tested in this paper.The results of test show that the microstructure,anti-welding property,breaking current capacity,chopping current level and voltage withstand characteristics of CuCrTe material made by vacuum melting were better than those of CuCr50 material made by traditional power metallurgical technique,especially its breaking current capacity has been improved about 26%,therefore,it is a new type of contact material with better properties.

Abstract:The CuCr25 and CuCr25Te contact materials were manufactured by vacuum casting process.The microstructures of two alloys were observed by metallographic microscope,the electrical conductivity,density and hardness were measured.The tensile test was done by universal testing machine while the fractography was observed by SEM,the breaking current tests were carried out in Weil Synthetic Circuit with arc-igniting branch in Xi’an Jiaotong University.The results show that the microstructures and physical parameters change after adding Te element.The tensile strength decreases and the toughness turns bad,which is propitious to improve the anti-welding property.But the breaking current capacity of CuCr25Te alloy is inferior to CuCr25 alloy.Thus,adding Te element has both advantages and disadvantages on main properties of CuCr contact material.

Abstract:Vacuum interrupters are important components to ensure the safety of medium and high-voltage power transmission, and contact material is an important factor affecting the performance of vacuum interrupters. CuCr contact materials have been used in most commercial vacuum interrupters. This paper summarizes the research status of the electrical properties of CuCr contacts used in vacuum interrupters, analyses the factors influencing the electrical properties of CuCr contacts, and summarizes the relevant mechanisms, which point out the direction for improving the properties of CuCr alloys and promotes the development of subsequent research on the electrical properties of CuCr contacts. Finally, the electrical properties of CuCr contacts prepared by self-propagating metallurgy based on the Al-CuO-Cr 2 O 3 reaction system are summarized.

Abstract:CuCr25 contact materials prepared by vacuum induction melting were investigated. The experimental results show that this technique can lead to low cost and high efficiency in industrial production. Ni and W additions can improve the microstructure of the alloys. At the same time, the properties of CuCr25 can reach the standard of conventional CuCr50 alloys. The influence of Ni and W additions on the microstructure and properties of CuCr25 alloys was discussed.

Abstract:The current cut-off phenomenon of vacuum switch will generate high overvoltage in the electrical circuit, which threatens the safety and insulation of electrical equipment. Adding trace elements to the contact material is one of the important measures to reduce the cut-off level of vacuum switch. In this paper, based on the research background of adding trace element Te (tellurium) to CuCr (copper-chromium) contacts, the oscillating circuit and detachable vacuum interrupter are used to measure the interception value of CuCrTe contacts with different additions and different processing techniques, and study the trace elements. The effect of element Te on the cut-off value of CuCr contacts preliminarily proves that the improvement of contact material can affect the level of cut-off value. The results show that adding Te element to the CuCr contact can reduce the cutoff value of the material. As the content of Te element in the contact increases, the cut-off value decreases unidirectionally, and the high-frequency oscillation of arc voltage and current near the cut-off moment is more pronounced. Obviously, it indicates the threat of back-arc heavy breakdown. The experimental results can provide a reference for the comprehensive optimization of copper-chromium contact trace element addition and switch performance indicators.

Abstract:Contact material is one of the key influential factors on vacuum dielectric performance. The dielectric performance in vacuum of a new kind of contact material -Quanwu alloy is studied and compared with CuCr25 and CuCr50 contact material that are widely used in vacuum interrupters. First,basic impulse level (BIL) tests (1.2/50 μs) were done by up-and-down method for the 3 contact materials. The BIL tests revealed that the breakdown probability distribution of the 3 contact materials followed Weibull distribution under different gaps. The 50% breakdown voltage of the 3 contact materials were in the order of CuCr50 Quanwu alloy CuCr25 in the contact gap range from 2 mm to 10 mm. The power frequency dielectric test results show that the dielectric strength of the 3 contact materials is with CuCr50≈Quanwu alloy≈CuCr25 at contact gap 1mm when the rising rate of the power frequency voltage is 3 kV/s. Finally the influence of rising rate of power frequency on the dielectric performance of Quanwu alloy was studied. The results show that the breakdown voltage of Quanwu alloy increases 1.6 times when the rising rate decreases from 3 kV/s to 1.5 kV/s. The experimental results show that the dielectric performance of Quanwu alloy is between CuCr25 and CuCr50 contact materials.

Abstract:In order to study effect of Cr content on microstructure and properties of CuCr contact material, three different Cr content contact materials, named CuCr25, CuCr30 and CuCr40, were manufactured by vacuum casting process. The microstructure, physical properties and breaking current properties were studied. The results show that both the consistency of the microstructure and the tensile strength increase, while the Cr particle size, the electrical conductivity and the density all decrease with increasing Cr content. The interrupting property of CuCr25 and CuCr30 is almost the same, whereas that of CuCr40 is the worst.

Abstract:Tensile fracture at room temperature and the faying microstructures of vacuum casting Cu-30CrTe, Cu-30Cr and sintered CuCr25 contact materials after diffusion welding in vacuum were evaluated by Optical Microscope and SEM. It is shown that there are different fracture characteristics in the three contact materials, and distinct microstructures formed at the faying surface of the Cu-30CrTe from that of the Cu-30Cr and sintered CuCr25. Consulting the XPS surface analysis results of elemental distribution and valence state of trace Te in the Cu-30CrTe contact material, the mechanism and principles of trace Te improving anti-welding property of Cu-30CrTe contact material are discussed.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to compare the electrical performance of CuCr30 (30%wt of Cr) contact material manufactured by vacuum arc-melting (VAR) and vacuum induction melting (VIM) technology. Experimental results show that the contacts manufactured by VAR having a better electrical performance than that of VIM. Firstly, the contacts manufactured by VAR have more homogeneous micro-structures than the contacts produced by VIM. Secondly, the electrical endurance performance of contacts manufactured by VAR shows better electrical endurance than that manufactured by VIM. Results of electrical endurance test, performed according to national standard GB/T 3855-2008, show that the contacts manufactured by VIM can withstand 38 interruptions of 25 kA short-circuit current at 12 kV voltage level. However, the contacts manufactured by VAR show 56 interruptions under the same test duty.

Abstract:Copper–chromium alloy material, as one of the most important electrode contact materials in the field of electrical contact, has been widely used in vacuum interrupters. To replace the SF6 circuit breakers at higher voltage levels and larger breaking capacities, there is an urgent need for new electrode contact materials to meet the comprehensive electrical performance requirements of high withstand voltage, high insulation, and erosion resistance. In this study, a novel electrode contact material, CuCr55, for a 252 kV single break vacuum interrupter was prepared by the arc melting method, and the microstructures of arc-cast CuCr25, melt-infiltrated CuCr50, and arc-melted CuCr55 materials were compared. The vacuum arc ignition and erosion characteristics of arc-melted CuCr55 contact materials were analyzed in detail. A high-speed camera was used to capture the arc ignition characteristics of short-circuit currents, and the critical currents for the formation of anode spots for different materials were obtained. The micro-morphology of the contact surface after erosion was observed using electron microscopy. The research results showed that the arc-melted CuCr55 contacts had a fine and uniform distribution of chromium particles with spherical and dispersed microstructures. After vacuum arc erosion, there was no material fracture or significant protrusion on the surface of CuCr55 contacts, and they exhibited a higher critical current for anode spot formation and good uniform erosion characteristics.

Abstract:The preparation of CuCr25W1Ni2 Alloy by vacuum inducing smeltingis presented in this paper. The influence of different content (25%Cu and 75%Cu) and Cr-crystalline grain on the physical properties and the breakdown voltage is studied. The discussion about the effect of alloy element and microstructure on the breakdown voltage of CuCr25W1Ni2 alloy is done too. Some results to improve the voltage withstanding stress of alloy are obtained.

Abstract:CuCr25W1Ni2 alloy was prepared by means of vacuum induction melting (VIM). A series of Cu/Cr alloys with different compositions (mass fraction, 25%～75%) and Cr grain sizes (up to 150 μm) were investigated for their differences in physical properties and breakdown voltage. The influence of alloy elements and microstructure on the performance of CuCr25W1Ni2 alloy was also discussed. Experimental results show that the chromium phase is strengthened and its size is minimized by the addition of tungsten powder. After electrical breakdown, very fine tungsten particles in the melt layer form the external nuclei in the solidification process. The microstructure of surface melt layer of CuCr25W1Ni2 alloy is much flatter. It can notably improve the dielectric strength. On the other hand, the nickel can enhance the mutual solubility of copper and chromium, and the whole alloy is strengthened.

Abstract:Insufficient anti-welding properties limit the application of Cu-Cr contact material in vacuum switches with low contact pressure. The CuCr-W-C alloys that are prepared are for decreasing welding tendencies and keeping the voltage withstand by addition of W and C elements. It is found that the average welding force of CuCr-W-C alloys is reduced more than 50% compared with that of the Cu50 Cr50 alloy. Especially for CuCrW3.0C0.3 and CuCrW1.0C0.5, the welding forces reduce to only 10% of Cu50Cr50. Arc erosion areas of CuCr-W-C alloys are enlarged by five times more than that of the Cu50Cr50 alloy in the same arcing conditions. The results of type tests were qualified. The results suggested that the CuCrW2.0C1.0 alloy could be used in vacuum switches with low contact pressure to replace the W-Cu type contacts.

Abstract:In order to improve the breaking capacity of contacts, it is very important to find a better contact material. In this paper, the triggering experiments of plate contact with different material are studied to investigate the characteristics of vacuum arc. The current range is from 1kA to 9kA (rms). The gap distance is 3mm and 5mm. The arc appearance and the behavior of cathode spots are captured by high-speed camera with an exposure time of 2 μs. The arc current and arc voltage are measured at the same time by Rogowski coil and high-voltage probe. The diameter of the contact is 25mm. There are five kinds of materials (CuCr10, WCu, CuW-WC, CuCr25 and CuCr30) conducted in this paper. Compared with the experiment results, for WCu, the arc speed is slowest, the arc distribution is most uniform and the cathode spot is brightest with a large angle of the ejected particles. The arc appearance of CuW-WC is changed fastest with noise of voltage. CuCr alloy's melting resistance property is poor. With the increase of Cr density, the erosion degree slows down gradually. The arc shape of the small gap distance hardly changes, and the burned area is more fixed.
Preparation of CuCr25 Alloys Through Vacuum Arc Smelting and Their Properties

Abstract:CuCr alloys are important contact materials, but all conventional preparing methods have disadvantages and mismatch the requirements for mass production and high properties. The CuCr25 alloys were prepared by means of arc smelting in vacuum, and their microstructures, physical properties as well as dielectric strength were investigated. The experimental results show that vacuum arc smelting is an ideal method to produce CuCr25 contact alloys with fine microstructure, low gas content, high density and dielectric strength. Meanwhile, with the high productivity and low cost, CuCr25 contact materials can be produced with mass production through vacuum arc smelting method.
