Abstract:The miscibility and cocrystallization of blends consisted of high density polyethy-lene(HDPE) and (ethylene-propylene-octene-1)copolymer (EPO) has been studied by DSC and WAXD methods, Only a single melting or cooling peak was found in DSC curves for all blends, showing an existence of cocrystalline interaction, The crystal parameter and crystallinity of the blends are in dependence of the composition of the blends, revealing the compatibility of the system.

Abstract:Cocrystallization behaviors of HDPE and LLDPE blends were studied via DSC test,and successive self-nucleation and annealing(SSA) thermal fractionation.Specifically,SSA technique was used to analyze the structural characteristics of the cocrystallized molecular chains.The influences of cocrystallization on the mechanical properties of the blends were also discussed.DSC results prove the good compatibility between HDPE and LLDPE in the blend system,and show that HDPE has a nucleation effect on the crystallization of the blends.SSA reveals that the crystallization behavior of HDPE/LLDPE blends depends on the branch distribution of LLDPE.HDPE and LLDPE form co-crystal only when their methylene sequence lengths are match.It is found that the yield stress of the blends is related to crystallinity and lamellae thickness.Yield stress decreases linearly with LLDPE content.The natural draw ratio drops with increase of LLDPE content.

Abstract:The crystallization of polyethylene (PE) blends is a highly complex process, owing to the significant differences in crystallizability of the various PE components and the varying PE sequence distributions resulting from short- or long-chain branching. In this study, we examined both the resins and their blends through crystallization analysis fractionation (CRYSTAF) to understand the PE sequence distribution and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to investigate the non-isothermal crystallization behavior of the bulk materials. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was utilized to study the crystal packing structure. The results showed that the PE molecules in the blends crystallize at different rates during cooling, resulting in a complicated crystallization behavior characterized by nucleation, co-crystallization, and fractionation. We compared these behaviors to those of reference immiscible blends and found that the extent of the differences is related to the disparity in crystallizability between components. Furthermore, the lamellar packing of the blends is closely associated with their crystallization behaviors, and the crystalline structure varies significantly depending on the components' compositions. Specifically, the lamellar packing of the HDPE/LLDPE and HDPE/LDPE blends is similar to that of the HDPE component owing to its strong crystallizability, while the lamellar packing of the LLDPE/LDPE blend is approximately an average of the two neat components.

Abstract:Blends of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were prepared by two-step processing way. Middle molecular weight polyethylene (MMWPE) as the lubricant was added into UHMWPE in the first processing step. Cocrystallization behavior of the blends was examined by DSC, XRD and light microscope (LM). A single endotherm peak in DSC curves revealed that cocrystallization probably formed between HDPE and UHMWPE. Moreover reducing heating rate didn't make the single endotherm separate. The enhancing of diffractive strength on 110 and 200 crystal face manifested that the UHMWPE molecular chains taken part in the crystallization of the blends. Reducing of the diameter of the undissolved UHMWPE particles in LM manified that the dispersion of UHMWPE in the blends obviously improved. Therefore two-step processing way could improve the dissolved degree and contribute to form the cocrystallization.
Studies On High Density Polyethylene/Polycarbonate Blend System Compatibilized With Low Density Polyethylene Grafted Diallyl Bisphenol A Ether

Abstract:Blends of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix and a polycarbonate (PC) minor phase were investigated through their morphology, heat resistance, mechanical properties, crystallizing behavior, rheological measurement and especially the compatible effect of a compatibilizer: low density polyethylene grafted diallyl bisphenol A ether (LDPE-g-DBAE). The blends without compatibilizer exhibited a phase growth and no adhesive between the HDPE matrix and the dispersed phase. In the presence of 10% by weight of LDPE-g-DBAE as a compatibilizer, more fine particles and a dim phase interface were observed, and the blends showed a remarkable increase in heat distortion temperature and mechanical properties. The compatibilized blends possessed a high apparent viscosity as compared with the noncompatibilized ones. However, the apparent viscosity of the blends, with or without the compatibilizer, was lower than that of the neat HDPE and PC. Exploration by DSC found that the melting point and the crystallinity of HDPE in the blends decreased, and especially for the blends with the compatibilizer. These facts could be interpret ed in terms of the efficient compatible effect of the LDPE-g-DBAE, which resulted from the interaction between, the diallyl bisphenol A ether unit of LDPE-g-DBAE and polycarbonate, and the miscibility of the LDPE unit and HDPE.

Abstract:The fractionated crystallization behavior of the minor dispersed HDPE phase in PS/POE/HDPE/SBS quaternary blends was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Interestingly, we found that the fractionated crystallization behavior of HDPE was molecular weight dependent. At a fixed composition, HDPE with lower molecular weight showed more obvious fractionated crystallization behavior than HDPE with higher molecular weight. This was ascribed to a finer dispersion of HDPE with lower molecular weight, as evidenced by SEM observations. The fractionated crystallization behavior of HDPE in the blends became less obvious with increasing of its content, due to a change of phase morphology from droplet to co-continuous structure. Correspondingly, a change of tensile toughness of the blends from brittle to ductile mode was observed.

Abstract:Blends of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with novel linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) samples in the whole range of compositions were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The LLDPEs are ethylene/octene-1 copolymers prepared with a single-site catalyst, with a narrower distribution of branches compared to Ziegler-Natta type polymers. It was found that cocrystallization or separate crystallization in the blends profoundly depends on the content of branches in the LLDPE, while the critical branch content of the novel LLDPE for separate crystallization is much lower than that of commercial LLDPE (prepared with Ziegler-Natta catalysts). This implies that the miscibility of linear and branched polyethylene is also affected by the distribution of branches. The marked expansion of the unit cell in cocrystals, which are formed by HDPE with the novel LLDPE, indicates that the branches are included in the crystal lattice during the cocrystallization process. The result is very helpful to understand the phenomenon that the unit cell dimensions of commercial branched polyethylene are larger than those of linear polyethylene.
Co-crystallization of blends of high-density polyethylene with linear low-density polyethylene: An investigation with successive self-nucleation and annealing (SSA) technique

Abstract:Two kinds of polyethylenes, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with few chain branches and short-chain branched linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with a relatively larger average molecular weight, were melt blended together in various mass ratios based on consideration of their practical applications. After identifying the good compatibility of the blends, their crystallization behaviors were studied by the successive self-nucleation and annealing (SSA) technique. The SSA analysis showed that not merely the number of melting fractions in the SSA curves changed with the blend composition, but also the content of the first two melting fractions at high temperature of SSA curves showed a positive deviation and a negative deviation with the blend composition, respectively. These phenomena, as well as the interesting appearance of a stepped increase of the lamellar thickness of each fraction with the highest temperature in each sample, indicated that co-crystallization occurred between HDPE and LLDPE. The results from wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) supported the conjecture obtained by the SSA analysis.

Abstract:Nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of the blends of three ethylene-butene copolymers with LDPE was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and kinetic parameters such as the Avrami exponent and the kinetic crystallization rate (Z(c)) were determined. It was found that the pure components and the blends have similar Avrami exponents, indicating the same crystallization mechanism. However, the crystallization rate of the blends was greatly influenced by LDPE. The Z(c) of all the blends first increases with increasing LDPE content in the blends and reaches its maximum, then descends as the LDPE content further increases. The crystallization rate also depends on the short-chain branching distribution (SCBD) of the ethylene-butene copolymers. The Z(c) of the pure component with a broad SCBD is smaller, but its blends have a larger crystallization rate due to losing highly branched fractions after blending with LDPE. Abstract:Three ethylene–butene copolymers (two metallocene-based and one conventional) having different composition distributions were blended with low density polyethylene (LDPE) in a wide proportion range. The miscibility of the blend melts was studied with the rheological method. It is found that zero-shear viscosity of all the blends does not obey the logarithmic additivity rule, indicating the immiscible state of the blend melts. The blends were rapidly quenched from the melts and co-crystallization phenomena were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The obtained results show that composition distribution has a great influence on co-crystallization. In the blends of the conventional ethylene–butene copolymer, which has a broad composition distribution, part of the co-crystals may segregate from the crystals of both LDPE and ethylene copolymer and exist as a separated population. This suggests that there exist three phases in the melts. In contrast, the blends of the metallocene-based ethylene–butene copolymers with a narrow composition distribution are only composed of two phases together with some exchange between the two components. It is also observed that broader composition distribution leads to more ethylene–butene copolymer transferred into LDPE.

Abstract:Two commercial polyethylene samples, linear high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and branched linear low-density polyethylene with almost the same molecular weight distribution but different contents of short-chain branching (SCB) were melt blended based on the consideration of practical application. Dynamic rheology analysis indicated good compatibility of all the blends with different compositions. Common differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) tests and successive self-nucleation and annealing (SSA) treatment showed several interesting phenomena. First, without consideration of the effect of molecular weight and molecular weight distribution impact, co-crystallization occurred at all ratios even the two components had a considerable difference in SCB distribution. Second, in SSA curves the area of the first two melting peaks, i.e., the amount of the thick lamellas of the two components showed an obvious positive deviation with the increase of HDPE content owing to the crystal perfection improved by the co-crystallization. Abstract:The crystallization kinetics of syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP)/high-density polyethylene (HDPE) blends were investigated by thermal and microscopical methods. Isothermal crystallization obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study the nucleation ability of HDPE on sPP crystallization. Morphological studies with polarized light microscopy (PLM) of solution cast films resulted in a transcrystalline-like overgrowth of the sPP on HDPE spherulites. The arrangement of the HDPE lamellar crystals in the blend were observed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM). But from these results, no straightforward conclusion about the transcrystalline nature of the sPP crystals can be given.

Abstract:Influence of inter-diffusion on the crystallization dynamics in polyethylene/poly(ethylene-alt-propylene) (PE/PEP) blends was studied by a combination of optical microscopy (OM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). OM measurements showed that the crystal nuclei may be first generated at phase separated interface where concentration fluctuation is greatly enhanced in the temperature quench process. After the formation of crystal nuclei, the only crystallizable components, PE chains, are necessary to reach the nucleation site via inter-diffusion to continue the secondary nucleation and growth process. DSC showed that there is only one 96 °C crystallization peak when PE (MW = 52 kg/mol) is blended with low molecular weight PEP (MW = 32 kg/mol); while there are two crystallization peaks, which are 96 °C and 72 °C, respectively, when the same PE is blended with high molecular weight PEP (MW = 110 kg/mol). The origin of the 72 °C crystallization peak was studied by DSC isothermal crystallization and time resolved FTIR. It was proved that the 72 °C crystallization peak is resulted from the smaller inter-diffusion coefficient in the PEP-rich region. Both slow mode theory and fast mode/constraint release models of inter-diffusion can be used to explain the smaller inter-diffusion coefficient in the PEP-rich region, which dynamically results in the disappearance of the 72 °C crystallization peak after isothermal crystallization at 90 °C for 60 min. Therefore, inter-diffusion plays an important role on crystallization dynamics in multi-component and multi-phase polymeric blends.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The effect of peroxide on the thermal and crystallization properties of high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) and HDPE/polypropylene (PP) blends has been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and X‐ray diffraction techniques (XRD). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was also employed to study the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of HDPE and HDPE/PP blends with or without dicumyl peroxide (DCP). It was observed that blending HDPE with PP increased the rate of crystallization as well as the crystallite size of HDPE, attributed to the lower molecular weight and melt viscosity of the system. A depression of the melting temperature, the degree of crystallinity as well as the rate of crystallization with increased DCP content, confirmed that crystallization was inhibited by the formation of cross‐links and branches in the system. The GPC measurement revealed that the molecular weight and its distribution were influenced by the addition of DCP and/or PP to PE, resulting in the differences in the rate of crystallization, and the size and the degree of perfection of the crystallite.

Abstract:The dynamic rheological behavior of high density polyethylene (HDPE)/ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) blends, low density polyethylene (LDPE)/UHMWPE blends and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/ UHMWPE blends was measured in parallel plate rheometer at 200°C. The analysis of log-additivity rule, Cole-Cole plots and Han curves of the three series blends indicated that the LDPE/UHMWPE blends were miscible in the melt, while the HDPE/UHMWPE blends and LLDPE/UHMWPE blends showed phase separation. The DSC results of LLDPE/UHMWPE blends and HDPE/UHMWPE blends were consistent with the rheological properties, while for the thermal properties of LDPE/UHMWPE blends, results revealed three endothermic peaks, which indicated a liquid-solid phase separation in LDPE/UHMWPE blends.

Abstract:The silane-graft reactions of the HDPE/LLDPE blends conducted with DCP as initiator and DBTL as catalyst in a twin-screw extruder and silane-crosslinked PE blends were prepared through hot-water crosslinking process.The effects of gel content on the performance of the silane-grafted and cross-linked blends were investigated.Through DSC and mechanical property test,it indicated that with the increase of gel content,the tensile and impact strength was increased,but the crystallinity and melting temperature reduced,and the homogeneity of the crystals became worse.
The influences of the compatibilizer with diallyl bisphenol a ether on hope/PC blend system

Abstract:The paper dealt with the influences of the o, o'-diallyl bisphenol A ether(DBAE) grafted low density polyethylene(LDPE-g-DBAE) as a compatibilizer on HDPE/PC blend system. The efficient compatible effects of LDPE-g-DBAE on HDPE/PC blends were confirmed through morphology observation, thermal and mechanical properties test, as well as crystalizing behaivor. Data showed that the HDT of the 65/35 HDPE/PC blend in the presence of 10phr LDPE-g-DBAE was 92°C and tensile strength 30.2MPa, notched impact strength 29.8kJ/m 2, while the HDT of the same composition blend with no compatibilizer was only 82°C and tensile strength 27.3MPz, notched impact strength 15.5kJ/m 2. The optimal concentration of the compatibilizer was 10phr and it was of benefit to improving properties of HDPE/PC blends with increasing the graft degree of LDPE-g-DBAE.
The Analysis of the Micrograph Studies the Formation and Evolution of Phase Structures in Incompatible High Density Polyethylene with Polyamide 1010 Blends

Abstract:In this paper,incompatible blends of high density polyethylene(HDPE) with polyamide 1010(PA1010) were studied during molten and mixing process by micrograph analysis.The samples were collected during molten and mixing process by on-line method,and the images of blends were obtained from scanning electron microscope(SEM).The diameters of dispersed phases were calculated by graph treatment technology.The distribution width of the diameters for dispersed phases was obtained using graph estimate method.The variation of the diameters of dispersed phases and the distribution width of the diameters for dispersed phases with blending time was discussed,showing the diameters,d,decease quickly with increasing blending time is less than 2min.When blending time is greater than 2min,the variation of the diameters and distribution width for dispersed phases is lead to flat.The fractal dimensions for SEM images were calculated by the fractal measure relations,showing the variation of dimension of dispersed phases bears self-similarity and the fractal dimensions increase quickly with increasing blending time before 2min.The fractal dimensions are lead to level when blending time is greater than 2min.The diameters,distribution width and fractal dimensions bear a relation to composition of blends and blending temperature.The variation of the diameters of dispersed phases and distribution width of the diameters of dispersed phases with rotational speed exist minimum.

Abstract:Morphology of polyamide/maleic anhydride grafted ethylene-propylene-diene monomer/high density polyethylene (PA6/EPDM-g-MA/HDPE) blend and crystallisation behaviour of HDPE in PA6/EPDM-g-MA/HDPE blend were studied by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Morphology observation revealed that core-shell morphology with shell of EPDM-g-MA and core of HDPE was formed in PA6 matrix. DSC test indicated that unexpected result of HDPE double crystallisation peaks emerged for ternary blend system. Also the low temperature crystallisation peak of HDPE was confirmed to be induced as a result of hindered nucleation of HDPE in fine dispersed core-shell particles and the process of crystalline shrinkage of PA6 matrix during cooling process. Furthermore, the factors influencing the crystallisation behaviour of HDPE were systematically studied in this work. The content of EPDM-g-MA and the time of melt mixing significantly affected the crystallisation behaviour of HDPE while the crystallinity of PA6 had a little effect on the crystallisation behaviour of HDPE. The results demonstrated an intimate relationship between phase morphology and crystallisation behaviour of HDPE.

Abstract:The mulching film samples of known and unknown composition LDPE/LLDPE blends have been analysed and the film samples of unknown composition have been identified by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The relationships between composition of film samples and melting enthalpy peak in their DSC thermograms have been discussed. The working curve for determining the composition has been given. The experimental results show that DSC is a quick, effective and accurate method for the analysis of main composition of LDPE/LLDPE blends mulching films.
