Abstract:Tracing some significant images of personified time to their sources, the essay discusses conceptions of time and its relations with man as reflected in English Renaissance poetry. Time is both a destroyer and a revealer. Renaissance poets lay emphasis on the destructive power of time, for only by destroying spurious values can time fulfill its function of unveiling truth. Time's threat to human life and civilization is a spur to constant pursuit of perfection and eternity, which gives expression to man's ardent wish to conquer time and makes a notable impact on the themes of English Renaissance poetry.
