Abstract:No art form so rigorously organises time as music. Whereas all art in some sense exists in time, music could be said to be of time. This article, however, questions implicit assumptions about the fundamental nature of time to music. In contrast, an alternative approach to the discourse of composition and analysis is proposed in which space rather than time is privileged. Russolo, Stockhausen, Cage and Agostino Di Scipio are cited as historical precedents where the status of time in music is questioned but a more detailed consideration is given to Ryoji Ikeda, a contemporary sound-art practitioner who, it is argued, represents a turn towards the privileging of space in contemporary music practice. This article argues that an approach to composition that implicitly accepts the primacy of time tends to privilege sounds that are more easily described symbolically, such as notated pitched sounds or materials with clear spectromorphological design. In contrast, an approach that places greater concern with the work in space facilitates the greater use of materials that could be considered ‘noise’, in the sense of both a broadband spectrum and signal disruption.

Abstract:The article reviewed the latest progre ss in the field of musical time perception from four main aspects: (1)the percep tion of time in music, including the mechanism and encoding of musical time,such as rhythm; (2)the performance of time in music(i.e. timing), which was focused on the systematic variations in timing and the theoretic interpretation about it ; (3)the perception-performance connection in music and its explanation; (4)the function of implicit knowledge and implicit learning in musical time perception .At last,the article concerned about the direction for future research,and point ed out the importance to study the function of implicit unconcious factor in mus ical time perception.

Abstract:Ancient Japanese music books have been quite effective in preserving the way the Chinese culture of time evolved dynamically abroad. Studying the relationship of music and dance with the times and festivals revealed in Japanese music books can help restore the context of the rituals and customs of music lost in its Chinese homeland. Japanese Gagaku has succeeded in passing down the seasonal quality of ancient Chinese banquet music which echoed the cycle of times, seasons and phenology and produced a seasonal regularity under which the music corresponded to the season. Some more symbolic Chinese music and dance were selected as the standard music for festivals such as the Double Third Festival, the Double Seventh Festival, and the Dragon Boat Festival. The many aspects of the Chinese culture of time that were accepted by Japan were threedimensional: they included not only the calendar, solar terms, festivals, and other points of time and knowledge of the seasons, but also cultural customs such as sacrificial ceremonies, music and dance, literary narratives, meat and drink, and sports and games. The culture of time that originated from the Han and Tang dynasties not only sustains East Asian countries' identification with natural laws and time, but also shapes their societies' shared aesthetic perception of nature, time, and life.

Abstract:Time is an important source of containment vis-à-vis the pressure of affects and the nondimensional immensity of mental space experienced by difficult patients. A more articulated spatiotemporal integration can be facilitated by the analyst's musical "reverie" during intense emotional exchanges in analytic sessions. This reverie can be visual, olfactory, kinaesthetic, etc., no less than auditory or musical. Music is indeed connected with both the concrete world of bodily sensations and the symbolic expressions of culture, and may be an important transitional phenomenon in analytic communication on both unconscious and conscious levels. Two clinical cases are presented in which the patient's awareness of the passage of time, associated with the analyst's internal musical experiences, made it possible in one case to reduce intense panic attacks and, in the other, to overcome the patient's rigid obsessive defenses, giving him access to fluid and unforeseen emotions. In these two instances of working through, the perception of time helped establish confidence in the creative contribution of the "unheard melodies" (Keats) of affects to the functioning of thought.

Abstract:In this chapter, we propose to review studies on the capability of making explicit judgments about the duration of auditory time intervals. After a brief look at the main methods used to study time perception, we then focus on factors affecting sensitivity to time (e. g., discrimination levels) including repetition of intervals and the duration range under investigation, as well as whether the interval is embedded in a music or in a speech sequence. Factors affecting the perceived duration of sounds and time intervals are then described using for example markers' length, space, pitch, and intensity. The last section of this chapter reviews the main theoretical perspectives in the field of temporal information processing, with an emphasis on the distinction between the traditional beat-based versus interval-based mechanisms.

Abstract:A common but none the less remarkable human faculty is the ability to recognize and reproduce familiar pieces of music. No two performances of a given piece will ever be acoustically identical, but a listener can perceive, in both, the same rhythmic and tonal relationships, and can judge whether a particular note or phrase was played out of time or out of tune. The problem considered in this lecture is that of describing the conceptual structures by which we represent Western classical music and the processes by which these structures are created. Some new hypotheses about the perception of rhythm and tonality have been cast in the form of a computer program which will transcribe a live keyboard performance of a classical melody into the equivalent of standard musical notation.

The Arrow of Time in Music -- Revisiting the Temporal Structure of Music with Distinguishability and Unique Orientability as the Anchor Point

Abstract:Driven by the term "the arrow of time" as a general topic, the article develops a musical discussion by referring to the etymological origin of the term: philosophy (epistemology) and physics (thermodynamics). In particular, the article explores two specific conditions: distinguishability and unique orientability, from which the article derives respective musical propositions and case studies. For the distinguishability condition, the article focuses on the "recurrence" in music and tries to interpret Bach's Christmas Oratorio from the perspective of "birth/resurrection". For the unique orientability condition, the article discusses the process of delaying the climax, thereby proposing "AB-AAB left-replication" model, implying an organicist view by treating the temporal structure of music (e.g. form) as the product of a dynamic process: organic growth.

Abstract:Music is known to alter people's ordinary experience of space and time. Not only does this challenge the concept of invariant space and time tacitly assumed in psychology but it may also help us understand how music works and how music can be understood as an embodied experience. Yet research about these alterations is in its infancy. This review is intended to delineate a future research agenda. We review experimental evidence and subjective reports of the influence of music on the representation of space and time and present prominent approaches to explaining these effects. We discuss the role of absorption and altered states of consciousness and their associated changes in attention and neurophysiological processes, as well as prominent models of human time processing and time experience. After integrating the reviewed research, we conclude that research on the influence of music on the representation of space and time is still quite inconclusive but that integrating the different approaches could lead to a better understanding of the observed effects. We also provide a working model that integrates a large part of the evidence and theories. Several suggestions for further research in both music psychology and cognitive psychology are outlined.

Abstract:This article documents over 400 years of Western writing about Japanese music, from Jesuit missionaries in the late sixteenth century, through diplomats, traders and travellers in the late nineteenth century, to musicologists and composers in the twentieth. It demonstrates that negative assessments of Japanese music prevailed for much of this long period, giving way to curiosity and respect only in fairly recent decades, and some of the reasons for these negative assessments are explored.

Abstract:Using a mixture of physiological evidence and analogies of time, the author describes the current version of a model of how we might view our interactions with time in music and beyond. An older model designed for analysis of complex twentieth-century acoustic works is updated to incorporate varied profiles of electroacoustic music. Recent research in auditory systems corroborates that we receive different types of information simultaneously through different channels, each taking more or less periodic sampling from different bands of frequencies – from timbre to phrase length and beyond. In order to acknowledge both the primitive structures of our complex hearing mechanisms and the different profiles of listeners, it is suggested that this multiple-sampling strategy may operate in a parallel way at a much larger scale, thereby allowing us to integrate the listener's preference for pacing, contrast and densities of activity into the sensory processing of a musical work. The article is enriched by insights from soundscape pioneer Hildegard Westerkamp relating to various aspects of the discussion, from sensory overload to ecological concerns to the natural rallentando of a soundwalk. Finally, a whimsical elaboration based on the analogy of time as a river is presented in order to incorporate a more organic set of characteristics into our appreciation of music and time.

Abstract:Adopting a performer-centric perspective, we frequently encounter two statements: "music flows", and "music is life-like". This dissertation builds on top of the two statements above, resulting in an exploration of the role of temporal asymmetry in music (generalizing "music flows") and its relation to the idea of organicism (generalizing "music is life-like"). We focus on two aspects of temporal asymmetry. The first aspect concerns the vastly different epistemic mechanisms with which we obtain knowledge of the past and the future. A particular musical consequence follows: recurrence. The epistemic difference between the past and the future shapes our experience and interpretation of recurring events in music. The second aspect concerns the arrow of time: the unambiguous ordering imposed on temporal events gives rise to the a priori pointedness of time, rendering time asymmetrical and irreversible. A discussion on thermodynamics informs us musically: the arrow of time effectuates itself in musical forms by delaying the placement of the climax. Organicism serves as a mediating topic, engaging with the concept of life as in organisms. On the one hand, organicism is related to temporal asymmetry in science via a thermodynamical interpretation of life as entropy-reducing entities. On the other hand, organicism is a topic native to music via the universally acknowledged artistic idea that music should be interpreted as a vital force possessing volitional power. With organicism as a mediator, we better understand the role of temporal asymmetry in music. In particular, we view musical form as a process of expansion and elaboration analogous to organic growth. Finally, we present an organicist interpretation of delaying the climax: viewing musical form as the result of organic growth, the arrow of time translates to a preference for prepending structure over appending structure.

The Social Life of Tunes: Representing the Aesthetics of Reception

Abstract:I report on two years of participant observation of traditional musicians in Dublin, Ireland. In Irish traditional music, players from all walks of life gather at pub sessions to play tunes together. Due to the ethos of traditional music, the representation of tunes is a constant aesthetic concern. Drawing on the aesthetics of reception, I show how arriving at the proper “text” of a tune poses unique challenges. Rather than simply reading notes on sheet music, traditional musicians must imaginatively read the creative text on a “virtual space” to create art. Making music involves a nuanced process of learning, knowing, and retaining a tune. The tune is not a static entity but one dynamically shaped by its social context and provenance. The social life of tunes suggests that technologies ought to support the practice of practicing seamlessly across the performance-oriented session and the solitary pursuit of skill, while allowing novices a way to conceptualize the historical flexibility of the tune. I will outline a new agenda of surveilling tradition to represent the aesthetics of reception. With the burgeoning interest in the collaborative work of tradition, this work provides new perspectives into the creative processes involved in representation.

Abstract:Music has profoundly shaped the human experience across cultures and generations, yet its impact on our minds and bodies remains elusive. This study examined how the perception of musical chord elicits bodily sensations and emotions through the brain's predictive processing. By deploying body-mapping tests and emotional evaluations on 527 participants exposed to chord progressions, we unveiled the intricate interplay between musical uncertainty, prediction error in eliciting specific bodily sensations and emotions. Our results demonstrated that certain chord progressions elicit cardiac and abdominal sensations, linked to interoception, and associated with aesthetic appreciation and positive valence. These findings highlight the crucial role of musical uncertainty and prediction error in emotional response and sound embodiment. This study offers insight into the potential connection between music-induced interoception and mental well-being, underscoring the musical effects on our minds and bodies.

The influence of tonality, tempo, and musical sophistication on the listener's time-duration estimates

Abstract:Music listening affects time perception, with previous studies suggesting that a variety of factors may influence this: musical, individual, and environmental. Two experiments investigated the effect of musical factors (tonality and musical tempo) and individual factors (a listener's level of musical sophistication) on subjective estimates of duration. Participants estimated the duration of different versions of newly composed instrumental music stimuli under retrospective and prospective conditions. Stimuli varied in tempo (90-120 bpm) and tonality (tonal-atonal), in a 2 × 2 factorial design, while other musical parameters remained constant. Estimates were made using written estimates of minutes and seconds in Experiment 1, and the reproduction method in Experiment 2. Two-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs) showed no main effect of tonality on estimates and no significant interactions between tempo and tonality, under any condition. Musical tempo significantly affected estimates, with the faster tempo leading to longer estimates, but only in the prospective condition, and with the use of the reproduction method. Correlation matrices using the Pearson correlation coefficient found no correlation between musical sophistication scores (measured using the Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index [Gold-MSI]) and verbal or reproduction estimates. In conclusion, together with the existing literature, findings suggest that (1) changes in tonality, without further changes in rhythm, metre, or melodic contour, do not significantly affect estimates; (2) small changes in musical tempo influence only prospective reproduction estimates, with larger tempo differences or longer stimuli being needed to cause changes in retrospective estimates; (3) participants' level of musical sophistication does not impact estimates of musical duration; and (4) empirical research on music listening and subjective time must consider potential method-dependent results.

Abstract:To many people, music is a mystery. It is uniquely human, because no other species produces elaborate, well organized sound for no particular reason. It has been part of every known civilization on earth. It has become a very part of man's need to impose his will upon the universe, to bring order out of chaos and to endow his moments of highest awareness with enduring form and substance. It is a form of art dealing with the organization of tones into patterns. Despite of cultural differences, music from different civilizations seems to consist of some building blocks that are universal: melody, harmony, rhythm, etc. Almost all musical systems are based on scales spanning an octave---the note that sounds the same as the one you started off with, but at a higher or lower pitch. It was discovered by Pythagoras, a Greek philosopher who lived around 500 BC, that the note an octave higher than another has a frequency twice high. The notes that sound harmonious together have simple rational number ratios between their frequencies. It is those implicit structures and relationships in apparently mysterious musical experience that I am interested in exploring here. As a scientist by training with a consistent passion for classical guitar playing, I would like make an attempt to explain the musical experience in terms of science and mathematics, hoping to fill some gaps between the knowledge of scientists and artistic intuition of musicians.

Meiji shinkyoku: the beginnings of modern music for the koto

Abstract:Th is paper argues for the success of early Meiji compositions for the koto, or Meiji shinkyoku, by suggesting that the composers’ adherence to premodern compositional models allowed for their continued appreciation. At the same time, however, these same composers eff ected a fundamental change in the esthetics of sōkyoku jiuta as they attempted to popularise their music. Th is change led to a new understanding of music, and allowed Tateyama Noboru (1876–1926) to turn to popular culture and initiate the modernization of koto music. Th is he did by introducing themes taken from Western military music and keyboard music into his compositions for koto. Tateyama’s innovations were a crucial step in the process of Japanese musical modernization as they led to the westernisation of music under Miyagi Michio (1894–1956) and the Movement for New Japanese Music. However, their reliance upon popular bourgeois culture weakened their esthetic value, despite their immense popularity. Tateyama’s works thus serve to highlight the strengths of the earlier Meiji shinkyoku and what followed with Miyagi, who fi nally left behind Japanese compositional moulds for forms from Western music. Th is essay elucidates why most of the compositions in the present day repertoire of Meiji shinkyoku are either by earlier composers or those who continued to compose according to earlier models.
