Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of porous coating on the core-veneer bond strength of a zirconia all-ceramic system using shear bond strength test. Methods: The shear bond strength of zirconia-veneering was tested by SchmitzSchulmeyer method. Sixty zirconia core specimens(10 ×5×5mm) were layered with the veneering porcelain(5 ×3×3mm). Three different groups were evaluated: polished with up to 1200# silicon carbide paper under water cooling; airborne-particle abrasion with 110μm alumina particles; modified by zirconia powder coating before sintering. Half of each group were exposed to the 5000 thermal cycles in water between 5℃ and 55℃. All specimens were subjected to shear force in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The shear bond strength values received 2-way ANOVA statistical analysis(α=0.05). Fractured specimens were evaluated microscopically to determine the failure mode. Results: The mean bond strength of porous coated zirconia was statistically higher than polished zirconia and the airborne-particle abraded group(P 0.05). The abraded group had no statistical difference with polished group(P 0.05). There was no statistical difference within the same groups before and after thermocycling(P 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy evaluation showed that cohesive fracture in the veneering ceramic was the predominent failure mode of porous coated zirconia and the other groups principally fractured at the interface. Conclusion: Modifying zirconia surface by porous coating can significantly increase the shear bond strength of zirconia to veneering porcelain. Airborne-particle abrasion was showed to be not effective to improve porcelain-zirconia bonding.
