Abstract:Distributed optical fiber sensing techniques have gradually played a prominent role in nondestructive structural health monitoring in the past decade due to their distinctive high durability, large data transmission bandwidth and inherent immunity to electric or electromagnetic interference. Brillouin opticaltime domain reflectometry called BOTDR, as a newly developed distributed optical fiber sensing technique, is capable of measuring the strain rising along whole sensing optical fiber. However, its measuring linearity, the precision and the applicability are uncertain yet for different types of sensing optical fibers; thus the calibration must be carried out before used. Using a calibration system for distributed optical fiber strain sensors, designed and made by authors, this paper investigated the linearity, the precision and the applicability of the nylon-jacketed optical fibers, whose strain was measured by BOTDR and strain gauges. The sensing optical fibers together with some strain gauges were all stuck to the surface of a steel cantilever with uniform strength, and then the cantilever was loaded step by step. Also, the theoretical calculation was carried out for reference. The measuring results of the sensing fibers showed a good linearity, and the correlation coefficients of it, based on the references values from strain gauges and theoretical calculation, were both more than 0.99. The relative errors attributed to both reference values can meet the needs of engineering application. And finally the conclusion can be made that the nylon jacketed optical fiber sensors have enough measure linearity, precision and applicability for practical use, also this calibration method provides an efficient way to further case study.
