Abstract:The conventional process of chemical-vapor infiltration (CVI) of ca rbon that has been employed in the fabrication of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites to densify porous carbon-fiber substrates is costly and time-consuming. A pos sible alternative to conventional CVI processing is to incorporate a material wi thin the carbon-fiber substrate that could increase the carbon deposition rate. In the present study, carbon/carbon composite was fabricated by catalytic chemi cal vapor infiltration (CCVI) with nickel as catalyst. Ni was introduced into th e substrates by wet impregnation. The effects of parameters of CCVI, including r eaction temperature, precursor gas content, catalyst content and time on the den sity of carbon/carbon composite were analyzed, and the surface morphology of the substrate carbon was studied by SEM.The results show that two kinds of carbon a re formed, i.e. carbon whisker and carbon block, and after CCVI treatment the de nsity of C/C can reach 1.594 g/cm3. The ultimate density of C/C dependes on temp erature to a great degree. The optimum process conditions are obtained, which in clude temperature, the volume percent of precursor gas and the Ni loading.
