Abstract:Objective To compare the long term quality of life in esophageal carcinoma patients treated with continuous accelerated hyperfractionated(CAHF) and late course accelerated hyperfractionated (LCAF)radiotherapy. Methods Subjective and Objective Management Analysis (SOMA) scale, Symptom Checklist 90(SCL 90) and Life Satisfaction Index A (LSIA) questionnaire were mailed to the long survivors in both CAHF and LCAF groups to assess the long term quality of life including symptoms, psychological status and life satisfaction. Results There was no significant difference between the two groups in the score of quality of life such as late radiation reaction, SCL 90 and LSI A. Conclusions 1. It is reasonable to assess the quality of life with these scales for esophageal carcinoma patients treated with radiotherapy, 2. Preliminary results demonstrate that there is no significant difference in long term quality of life between the CAHF and LCAF radiotherapy groups, 3. Methods of evaluating the long term quality of life for esophageal carcinoma patients treated with radiotherapy needs further investigation, preferably involving more patients and setting on control arm.
