Abstract:Objective To evaluate long-term quality of life of patients treated with accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy for esophageal carcinoma. Methods SOMA scale,Symptom Checklist 90(SCL 90) and Life Satisfaction Index A (LSIA) questionnaire were mailed to the long term survivors treated with accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy for esophageal carcinoma for assessment of long term quality of life including physical symptoms, psychological status and life satisfactory evaluation. Control group was also used. Results There was no significant difference between accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy group and control group in terms of the scoring of quality of life such as SCL 90 and LSI A. While in the treatment group, there was also no significant difference between continuous accelerated hyperfractionated(CAHF) and late course accelerated hyperfractionated (LCAF)subgroups according to the scoring of quality of life such as late radiation reaction,SCL-90 and LSI-A.Conclusions (1)Preliminary results demonstrated that long-term survivors treated with accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy for esophageal carcinoma retain good quality of life including physical symptoms, psychological status and life satisfactory evaluation.(2)Preliminary results demonstrated that there is no significant difference in long term quality of life between the two groups.(3)Methods of evaluation for long term quality of life for patients treated with esophageal carcinoma needs further investigation.Involvement of more patients and establishment of control group are also worthwhile.
