Abstract:A facile solid-phase conversion route is proposed to fabricate a micro-framework of alpha-MnO2 with a nanofibrous structure and high porosity. The fabrication is achieved by a three-step process using a preformed manganese tartrate with a rectangular framework as the precursor followed by thermal annealing and hydrothermal oxidation to form the final nanofibrous structure. Evolution of the phase and the morphology are characterized by FESEM, XRD, TG-DTA, and TEM measurements. The electrochemically active material alpha-MnO2 exhibits both attractive stability of the Coulombic efficiency after long-term cyclic charging/discharging and acceptable specific capacitance. Abstract:Porous MnO2/Co composites with regular ellipse shape were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal-decomposition method. Coembedded manganese oxalate precursors were firstly synthesized by a hydrothermal process. Then, Mn2O3/Co composites were obtained by a following precisely controlled decomposition process. After a further oxidation reaction, nanofibrous MnO2/Co composites were formed with well-retained ellipse microframework inherited from precursors. X-ray diffractometer (XRD), thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS) were used to characterize the composition, structure, and morphology of all the samples. The electrochemical properties of MnO2/Co were studied using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge test in 1.0mol/L Na2SO4 electrolyte. Doping of Co in an appropriate range can improve the electrochemical performance of MnO2.
Hydrothermal Synthesis and Electrochemical Behavior of Nanosized Orthorhombic Limno2

Abstract:Nanosized orthorhombic LiMnO2 was successfully synthesized using Mn2O3 and LiOH center dot H2O as starting materials. Not only the reaction temperature was lower, but the reaction time for synthesizing was notably shortened to 1 h. In this hydrothermal process, the cations of the starting materials were capable of mixing and interacting in ionic scale, which resulted in the rapid formation of o-LiMnO2 powders at relatively low temperature. The particle size conformed by transmission electron microscopy is around 50 similar to 150 nm. Benefiting from its small particle size and good uniformity, the obtained o-LiMnO2 can reach the maximum discharge capacity of 163 mA center dot h center dot g(-1) at 0.1 C rate after several cycles. X-ray diffraction data and electrochemical properties suggested the phase transformation from orthorhombic LiMnO2 to defect-type spinel LiMn2O4 with minor Li2MnO3, which resulted in the capacity fading during cycling.

Abstract:Nanostructured MnO2 materials were prepared in a micro-emulsion medium using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS）as a surfactant by a redox reaction between potassium permanganate and aniline. The morphologies of the obtained MnO2 were critically dependent on the concentrations of SDS. The particle sizes varied with the change in the micro-emulsion medium. The optimized properties of MnO2 material obtained with the surfactant concentration of 0.2 mol.L-1 had a specific surface area of 228.2 m2.g-1, and delivered a specific capacitance of 237 F.g -1 in 1 mol.L-1 Li2SO4. Additionally, a reversible Li-ion intercalation reaction occurred in the MnO2 calcined at 350 oC.

Abstract:A novel route was used to prepare ultrafine powders of MnO2, i.e. the solid state reaction of KMnO4 with manganese acetate or manganese chloride at or near room temperature. The results of XPS and chemical analysis revealed that the main valence state of synthesized manganese oxides was 4. TEM and XRD showed that the average particle sizes were in the range 10–50nm with two kinds of shapes: acicular and spherical; and the crystalline form was α+δ-phase. It has been confirmed that the existence of crystalline water was the key factor for the occurrence of the solid phase preparation of nano-particles at low temperature. It has also established that the discharge performance of nano-sized MnO2 electrode was different from that of normal-sized MnO2 electrode.

Abstract:Black powder MnOOH can be oxidized or reduced to generate raw materials for producing zinc manganese iron oxide magnetic ferrite materials in electronics industry.KMnO4 and MnSO4 were used as raw materials to synthesize MnOOH nanorods in mixed solvent of water and propanol.The phase,structure,morphology and composition of the products were analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction,differential thermal analysis,infrared spectrometry,scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy,and energy dispersive spectrometry.The influence of experiment conditions,including reaction temperature,time and solvent,on the phase and shape of nanosized MnOOH were studied.Results show that as-prepared MnOOH nanorods with a length of several microns and diameter of 50 nm could be obtained via solvothermal route at a temperatures of 140-220 ℃ and time of 6-12 h.Propanol played a significant role in the formation of nano-sized MnOOH.

Abstract:MnO 2 nanorods were successfully synthesized via simple hydrothermal method in the presence of onion carbon as the reducing agent,KMnO 4 as the oxidizing agent,and dilute sul-phuric acid as the solvent.The phase composition,structure and morphology of as-obtained MnO 2 nanorods were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron mi-croscopy.The electrochemical performance of MnO 2 nanorods as electrode materials for super-capacitor was evaluated with a CHI660B electrochemical workstation.Results show that as-ob-tained MnO 2 nanorods consist of pureα-MnO 2 and have a diameter of 5-10 nm and a length of 50-100 nm.As electrode materials for supercapacitor,MnO 2 nanorods exhibit good long-term stability and excellent charging and discharging capacities,showing potential application in su-percapacitor.

Abstract:Large-scale gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2, nanorods have been synthesized via the hydrothermal process assisted with CTAB at 200 degrees C for 20 h using MnSO4 and NaOH as source and subsequent calcination of gamma-MnOOH nanorods at 300 degrees C for 3 h, respectively. The characterization of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) indicate that the gamma-MnOOH and beta-MnO2 nanorods prepared are monoclinic and tetragonal single crystalline, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanism for the CTAB assisted hydrothermal synthesis of gamma-MnOOH nanorods has been preliminarily presented. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-MnO(2) single-crystal nanowires/nanorods with different aspect ratios have been successfully prepared by a common hydrothermal method based on the redox reactions of MnO(4)(-) and/or Mn(2+). The influences of oxidant, temperature, and inorganic cation (NH(4)(+) and K(+)) template concentrations on the morphology and crystallographic forms of the final products are discussed in this paper. It is interesting to find that all the MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures have a similar formation process: delta-MnO(2), which has a layer structure, serves as an important intermediate to other forms of MnO(2), and is believed to be responsible for the initial formation of MnO(2) one-dimensional nanostructures. A rolling mechanism has been proposed based on the results of the series of TEM images and XRD patterns of the intermediate.

Abstract:Manganese oxides are important materials in many applications. We describe, for the first time, the facile one-pot synthesis of highly crystallined lambda-MnO2 nanodisks assembled from nanoparticles through a novel wet chemical route. Morphology evolutions, magnetic properties, and phase transitions are also studied by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron rnicroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. A mechanism for the formation of the lambda-MnO2 nanodisks as well as their inner structure is proposed based on controlled experiments. The key to the successful preparation of this novel MnO2 nanostructure has been a synergic control of a surfactant, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and a solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide, capable of stabilizing the microreactors and promoting the assembly of manganese nanoparticles.

Abstract:On basis of the redox reaction between MnO4− and Mn2+, a facile hydrothermal method combined with the adjustment of pH value in the reaction system has been employed to synthesize single-crystal γ-MnOOH nanorods, and square-like Mn3O4 nanoparticles. Additionally, single-crystalline β-MnO2 and Mn2O3 nanorods can be obtained after subsequent calcinations of the as-prepared γ-MnOOH nanostructures at 300°C and 600°C, respectively. Furthermore, electrochemical property of as-obtained β-MnO2 is also studied.

Abstract:In situ high energy X-ray diffraction (HEXRD) and in situ X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) were carried out to understand the solid state synthesis of NaxMnO2, with particular interest on the synthesis of P2 type Na2/3MnO2. It was found that there were multi intermediate phases formed before NaMn02 appeared at about 600 degrees C. And the final product after cooling process is a combination of 0'3 NaMn02 with P2 Na2/3MnO2. A P2 type Na2/3MnO2 was synthesized at reduced temperature (600 degrees C). The influence of Na2CO3 impurity on the electrochemical performance of P2 Na2/3MnO2 was thoroughly investigated in our work. It was found that the content of Na2CO3 can be reduced by optimizing Na2CO3/ MnCO3 ratio during the solid state reaction or other post treatment such as washing with water. We expected our results could provide a good guide for future development of high performance cathode materials for sodium -ion batteries. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nanosized LiMn2O4 spinel powder was synthesized by a spray-drying method. Compared to a solid-state reaction, this route not only reduces the high-temperature calcination time to a short time, but also effectively decreases the average particle size of LiMn2O4 powders to the order of nanometers. XRD data indicate that nanosized LiMn2O4 with short time calcinations has a high degree of crystallization with a well-defined spinel structure. In addition, the initial capacity at room temperature is markedly increased and the extent of capacity of degradation is reduced obviously at a high current density, showing a great potential for future applications.

Abstract:α-MnO2 nanorod was prepared by chemical precipitation with surfactant as the structure-directing agent and subsequent heat treatment at 800°C. The morphology and structure of the prepared α-MnO2 were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was revealed that the α-MnO2 nanorod was successfully synthesized without impurities and the diameter of the nanorod was less than 50nm. In cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatical discharge–charge test, the α-MnO2 nanorod showed regular capacitive behaviors and good cycling stabilities and delivered a maximum capacitance of 166.2F/g, which indicated that the α-MnO2 nanorod was a potential good electrode material for supercapacitor application.

Abstract:MnO2 nanomaterials are synthesized via calcinations in air at various temperatures. Amorphous MnO2 masses appear between 100 and 300 °C and nanorods form above 400 °C. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy are used to observe the geometries of each material, with further structural analyses conducted using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and BET method. The electrochemical properties are investigated through galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling, electrochemical impedance spectra, and cyclic voltammetry within a three-electrode test cell filled with 1 mol L−1 Na2SO4 solution. The slightly asymmetric galvanostatic cycling curves suggest that the reversibility of the Faradaic reactions are imperfect, requiring a larger time to charge than discharge. The specific capacitances of each sample are calculated and trends are identified, proving that the samples synthesized at higher temperatures exhibit poorer electrochemical behaviors. The highest calculated specific capacitance is 175 F g−1 by the sample calcinated at 400 °C. However, the lower temperature samples exhibit more favorable geometric properties and higher overall average specific capacitances. For future research, it is suggested that surface modifications such as a carbon coating could be used in conjunction with the MnO2 nanorods to reach the electrochemical properties required by contemporary industrial applications.

Abstract:MnO2 was prepared using a novel synthetic route based on the solid state reaction of KMnO4 with MnCl2 . 4H(2)O at room temperature. MnO2 powder synthesized with this method was nanosized and had large specific surface area (300 m(2)/g). The electrode coated with a thin film of MnO2 exhibited a fast, stable pH response in aqueous solution. A linear pH-potential curve was observed over the pH range of 2-12 with a sensitivity of - 78.3 mV/pH at room temperature. In addition, its response mechanism was discussed as well in this paper. Abstract:A facile method was developed to synthesize γ-MnO2 with different structures and surface properties in this paper. γ-MnO2 was prepared by oxidation of MnSO4 with Na2S2O8 at 90°C for 2.0 h. γ-MnO2 formed at initial pH 1.0 (M1) and 8.5 (M2) was composed of MnO1.93·0.23H2O and MnO1.96·0.18H2O, respectively. The higher ratio of pyrolusite in M2 (Pr=43.90%) than that in M1 (Pr=24.86%) indicated that compared with M1, M2 would absorb more protons since the planar oxygen atoms in pyrolusite were incompletely coordinated and liable to absorb the protons. Meanwhile, the higher oxidation valence of Mn in M2 than that in M1 revealed that the Mn atoms in M2 were more liable to draw the electron density from the surface oxygen atoms in hydroxyl groups. The structural and compositional differences between M1 and M2 were the major reasons why M2 possessed a higher surface potential and a weaker ability to absorb Zn2+ ions.

Abstract:The structural, morphological and electrochemical properties of the hydrothermally prepared manganese oxide (MnO2) nanostructures are discussed in this paper. Interesting nanostructures of MnO2, mixture of nanostructured surface with a distinct plate-like morphology and nanorods, have been prepared by employing hydrothermal synthesis under mild conditions. The specific surface area of the prepared material was 132 m2 g−1. Electrochemical properties of the synthesized nanostructured material were studied using galvanostatic cycling and cyclic voltammetry in a mild aqueous electrolyte that showed a high specific capacitance of 168 Fg−1. In addition, the synthesized nanomaterial showed a good reversibility and cycling stability.

Abstract:The scalable synthesis of manganese oxide compounds with diverse physiochemical properties through anodic electrodeposition and calcination holds significant promise for applications ranging from photocatalysis to supercapacitors. Advanced characterization techniques unveiled crucial details about the compounds' morphology, crystal structure, porosity, and chemical state. A significant breakthrough was achieved by understanding the electrodeposition mechanism, resulting in a unique dual‐phase film of amorphous MnOOH and nanocrystalline α‐Mn3O4 under near‐neutral pH conditions. Moreover, this study deepens our understanding of phase transformation kinetics during calcination. Tailoring of the stoichiometry, crystallinity, and microstructure of manganese oxides (MnOx) is of utmost importance for technological applications in the field of catalysis, energy storage, and water splitting. In this work, α‐Mn2O3, α‐Mn3O4, and MnO thin films with defined stoichiometric compositions and crystal structures were prepared by calcination of an anodically electrodeposited Mn‐oxyhydroxide precursor film in different gas atmospheres (air, inert, or reducing gas). The crystal structure and composition of the precursor and product films were determined by combining X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, and elastic recoil detection analysis. The anodically electrodeposited precursor film consists of nanocrystals of α‐Mn3O4 dispersed in an amorphous MnOOH matrix phase, and can be fully transformed into either crystalline α‐Mn2O3, α‐Mn3O4, or MnO upon calcination in an oxidizing, inert or reducing atmosphere, respectively. In situ high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction was applied to derive the phase transformation kinetics, resulting in a corresponding activation energy which decreases in the order α‐Mn2O3 (268 kJ/mole) > MnO (102 kJ/mole) > α‐Mn3O4 (60 kJ/mole). The disclosed synthesis routes for the preparation of single‐phase MnOx films with a defined crystal structure and stoichiometry can be exploited for a wealth of applications.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanomaterials have shown excellent performance in catalytic degradation and other fields because of their low density and great specific surface area, as well as their tunable chemical characteristics. However, the methods used to synthesize MnO2 nanomaterials greatly affect their structures and properties. Therefore, the present work systematically illustrates common synthetic routes and their advantages and disadvantages, as well as examining research progress relating to electrochemical applications. In contrast to previous reviews, this review summarizes approaches for preparing MnO2 nanoparticles and describes their respective merits, demerits, and limitations. The aim is to help readers better select appropriate preparation methods for MnO2 nanomaterials and translate research results into practical applications. Finally, we also point out that despite the significant progress that has been made in the development of MnO2 nanomaterials for electrochemical applications, the related research remains in the early stages, and the focus of future research should be placed on the development of green synthesis methods, as well as the composition and modification of MnO2 nanoparticles with other materials.
