Abstract:This paper presents a senorless drive circuit for brushless DC motor. The rotor position signal is drawn from winding EMF. The control logic of power switches is performed by EPROM chip. The disturbance in EMF is eliminated to ensure a correct position signal.

Abstract:Based on the simplified flux method, this paper presents a position sensorless technique for the switchedreluctance drives (SRD) with energy optimizing control strategy. The method employs a calibration routine to learn themagnetization characteristics of each motor phase at its aligned position. From this information, flux-current characteristics at commutation angle can be approximated through an on-line optimizing process to minimize the energy consumption.Commutation is accomplished by estimating the flux-linked in an active phase and comparing the flux optimized for the commutation angle. The experimental results show that this SRD position sensorless method which is based on an on-line adjustment of commutation angle can be implemented simply and tuned up to achieve high efficiency at wide operation range.

Abstract:In this paper, a sensorless drive of switched reluctance motor without predefined parameters is proposed to simplify the application of SRM. To avoid additional cost and unreliability caused by sensor device, sensorless control technology of SRM has attracted increasing attentions and obtains considerable development over recent years. The main idea behind most existing sensorless control strategy is extract the position information from electromagnetic status of the SRM through proper modeling and calculation, which usually demands accurate inherent electromagnetic parameters of SRM. The strategy proposed in this paper realizes the SRM drive function only with electric parameters which are easy to measure, such as rotor resistance, rated voltage and rated current. Pulse injection method is the essential theories of this design. The experiment result verifies this strategy to be a practical research direction in the application with no need for high precision.

Abstract:A dual mode control method of brushless DC motor(BLDCM) either with position sensor or sensorless was presented.The controller worked with position sensor under normal condition,but it would switch to the sensorless mode automatically once the position sensor was broken down or the signal wire got disconnected.The mode tran-sition technology and sensorless rator position detecting technology were mainly discussed.Under the sensorless mode,by using short pulse test method based on the magnetic saturation effect of the stator iron and the maximum probability method,the position of the rator still or at low speed could be located.By using the back EMF zero-crossing point detecting method,the rator's position could be located at higher speed.
A Novel Starting Method of Sensorless BLDC Motors for Electric Vehicles

Abstract:A novel starting method of the brushless DC (BLDC) motors without position sensor for electric vehicles (EV) is proposed, including detecting of rotor position at standstill and a start-up method to accelerate the rotor up to a certain speed where the conventional position sensorless control methods based on the back EMF could work effectively. The whole starting procedure is accompanied with rotor position estimation, which can avoid the temporary reverse rotation and the starting failure of electric vehicles. The principle of the estimation is based on the variation of the current response caused by the magnetic saturation of the stator core of BLDC motor when the current flows along the magnetic axis. Further more, specific strategies of starting torque optimization and noise reduction are developed to start electric vehicles quickly and smoothly. This method is implemented with only one current sensor at the DC bus of the inverter and a low-cost general-purpose microcontroller, which becomes a simple, compact, low-cost, and effective solution for sensorless BLDC motors in the field of electric vehicles. It is demonstrated experimentally that a rapid and stable starting can be achieved by the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, a back electromotive-force(EMF) detection circuit for position sensorless brushless DC motor (BLDCM) drive systems is presented, in which the second-order active Butterworth low-pass filter is used. The detecting circuit is composed of a voltage divider and an active low-pass filter. First, the voltage dividing circuit is designed, and two design principles should be followed. Second, the selections of the structure, the order and the parameters of the active filter are investigated in detail. Last, the theoretical analysis, simulation and experiment are all done with the proposed position detecting circuit. The investigation results show that designed circuit can operate well in the sensorless BLDCM drive.

Abstract:A novel phase back electromotive force (EMF) detection method was presented for the sensorless control system of brushless dc (BLDC) motors. The true back EMF zero-crossing point can be directly extracted by detecting the voltage difference between the open phase terminal and the mid point in the dc link without sensing the motor neutral point voltage, and the rotor position information can be obtained by lagging the back EMF zero-crossing point 30 electrical degrees. The method proposed here is not sensitive to switching noise so that no filtering circuit is required. Only one of the three phase back EMF waveforms is detected and six discrete commutation signals which are necessary to perform the inverter commutation are obtained by software delay in this control system, so the detection circuit is simplified. The detailed circuit was analyzed and some experimental results obtained from the sensorless control system of BLDC motors are shown to verify the analysis and confirm the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to present a comparative and quantitative study on three hall effect sensorless circuit configurations in permanent magnet (PM) brushless dc motor drives, along with four practical pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques. PM brushless direct current (BLDC) motor mathematical model, principles of operation, measurement circuit and logic configurations for three back electromotive force (EMF) zero crossing detection methods, as well as theoretical analysis on various PWM patterns are described. Their performance evaluation on waveform quality, rotor position tracking capability, and torque ripple impact are quantified as functions of motor speed and load variation. Digital time domain simulation models are established with the closed current and speed loops for the evaluation. Experimental results without using any hall effect sensors fully validate the theoretical and simulation findings.

Abstract:Circular winding brushless dc (CWBLdc) motor is a novel square-wave multiphase permanent magnet motor with high torque density and excellent vibration performance. It has good prospect in high power and performance applications. However, the control of CWBLdc motor depends on a precise rotor position. Consequently, its application is restricted in some situations where it is difficult to install position sensors. In view of the fact that the existing sensorless control methods are not suitable for the novel CWBLdc motor, a sensorless control algorithm based on the phase voltages and dc current detection is proposed to obtain a continuous and precise rotor position. The fundamental harmonic amplitude of the phase current is estimated based on the dc current, which eliminates the process of phase currents detection and reduces the complexity of the circuit. The error of the algorithm is derived in detail and its accuracy is analyzed theoretically in the paper. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed sensorless control algorithm is equivalent to that of control with position sensor.

Abstract:Brushless DC Motor is a kind of a new motor which commutation signals replaces traditional motor mechanical structure with electronic signals. Square wave brushless DC motor can be divided into sensor motor and sensorless motor. Position sensor will increase system cost, motor size and maintenance difficulty, which bring about limitation and limits to promote its application in all areas. This project designs sensorless BLDC Motor control system with the core of the stm32 micro-controller and uses Back-EMF zero-crossing detection method. In the system designing software control algorithm, drawing schematic diagram of hardware and making PCB board have been completed dependently. The experimental results show that the system can well realize the starting and running of sensorless BLDC Motor control system, and have a good measure of protection.

Abstract:This paper describes Freescale company’s DSP device MC56F8013 implementation of a control method for sensorless BLDC motor, which is according to fuzzy neural network. The inductance of stator core varies according to the variation of rotor position, and the rotor position can be estimated with the variation of current response caused by six direction voltage vectors. Then use fuzzy neural network PI control method to optimize the dynamic performance, accelerate the rotor to a certain speed, and switch to EMF mode. The experiment results show that the proposed method can have fast response, strong robustness and superior performances.

Abstract:In this paper, the disturbance of the rotor position caused by the current of the suspension plane was discussed in a multiphase permanent magnet bearingless motor system. The detection model and the control algorithm were established based on a sliding mode observer. To ameliorate the system performance and identification accuracy, saturation function and low-pass filter with a variable cut-off frequency were designed. Comparing with conventional sensorless control algorithm based on the back electromotive force(EMF), the proposed scheme is insensitive to motor parameters, and it could inhibit the innate disturbance caused by coupling and enhance the robustness of the bearingless system. The experimental results verify the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed sensorless control scheme based on the sliding mode observer in the multi-phase bearingless motor with single set of windings.

Abstract:As for a Brushless DC Motor(BLDCM) with saliency pole structured rotor, the self-inductance and mutual inductance vary according to the rotor position. As a result, the difference between terminal voltage samples of floating phases during PWM on and free-wheeling period shows a regular change, which makes it possible to detect the rotor position. Based on the principle above, the initial rotor position detection is realized. A new sensorless commutation technique is proposed by comparing the terminal voltage sample difference with commutation thresholds. When the PWM duty cycle approaches 100%, a complementary rotor position detection method suitable for the extreme situation is applied. Thus, the rotor position can be detected in full-speed range. Experiment results verify that the saliency-based sensorless strategy is simple and effective.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel rotor position detection method for sensorless control of magnetic-geared permanent-magnet brushless motor. Instead of use of traditional position sensor such as encoder and resolver, two special sensor windings are installed in the stator slots to replace the position sensors. A magnetic-geared permanent-magnet brushless motor has been designed and simulated to verify the validity of the proposed method. The result shows that this novel rotor position detection method is compact, effective and it can be used for sensorless control of magnetic-geared permanent-magnet brushless motor.

Abstract:Rotor position sensors are eliminated in a rotor position detection method developed for sensorless,brushless DC motor drives.This method directly extracts the true back electromotive force(EMF) zero-crossing point by detecting the voltage difference between the floating phase terminal and the midpoint in the DC link.The commutation signal of the floating phase is obtained by lagging the back EMF zero-crossing point 30°.The method provides good motor performance over a wide speed range,especially at lower speeds.Experimental results from a prototype brushless DC motor verify the analytical results and confirm the validity of the method.

Abstract:This paper provides a technical review of position and speed sensorless methods for controlling Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor drives, including the background analysis using sensors, limitations and advances. The performance and reliability of BLDC motor drivers have been improved because the conventional control and sensing techniques have been improved through sensorless technology. Then, in this paper sensorless advances are reviewed and recent developments in this area are introduced with their inherent advantages and drawbacks, including the analysis of practical implementation issues and applications. The study includes a deep overview of state-of-the-art back-EMF sensing methods, which includes Terminal Voltage Sensing, Third Harmonic Voltage Integration, Terminal Current Sensing, Back-EMF Integration and PWM strategies. Also, the most relevant techniques based on estimation and models are briefly analysed, such as Sliding-mode Observer, Extended Kalman Filter, Model Reference Adaptive System, Adaptive observers (Full-order and Pseudoreduced-order) and Artificial Neural Networks.

Abstract:A closed loop control technique based on monitoring phase current risetime for switched reluctance (SR) motors without direct rotor-position sensors has been studied and implemented successfully. In this technique the variation in incremental phase inductance in a SR motor is used to detect rotor position. A control circuit for current-waveform-based rotor position detection has been implemented using hard-wire digital circuits.
