Abstract:As the sole aromatic compound that can be obtained from renewable resources, lignin is petroleum resources potential effective alternative. The utilization of technical lignin produced from pulping and/or biorefinery industry has a great significance in eliminating the eco-environmental pollution and expanding the use of the renewable resource. The research on technical lignin valorization has a long history, but it remains still in laboratory or pilot-plant scale. Effective lignin valorization requires economically viable processes for depolymerizing lignin into aromatic monomers and then separating the depolymerized products from the other components. To improve the upstream and downstream processing efficiency, it is vitally important to develop efficient depolymerization and separation technologies. For a long time, extensive research studies have always been concentrated on developing high-efficiency catalytic depolymerization systems for lignin utilization. However, separation of depolymerized products has not yet received sufficient attention. To get more insights into the present research status, this review comprehensively summarizes and discusses the latest advancements on various separation methods of lignin derivatives, including extraction, membrane filtration, chromatographic separation, distillation, and combination technologies. Moreover, this review also puts forward a few available and feasible ideas for the future separation of lignin depolymerized products. The aim of this review is to provide an up-to-date summary of recent advances in the field of lignin derivatives separation, which may help to accomplish industrialized disposing technical lignin.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Highly purified lignin with 3000 molecule weight, more than 90% purity, was obtained from reed pulp, through the use of organic-solvent-circulation method, a newly lignin separating method. Organic-solvents-circulation method of lignin separation exhibited faint effects on the molecule structure of lignin. Melting lignin showed pseudoplastic characteristics. Lignin blending performed excellent processing properties in molding process.

Abstract:The invention relates to a method for recycling lignin from low-boiling alcohol method pulping waste liquor, which relates to the technical field of pulping papermaking engineering. The method for recycling the lignin from the low-boiling alcohol method pulping waste liquor is applicable to the waste liquor which is obtained by boiling reagent of plant raw materials with low-boiling alcohols, the waste liquor is processed in steps such as flash evaporation, diluting, cooling, precipitation, filtering, separating, drying and the like to obtain lignin, calcium hydroxide is added in filter liquor, and the precipitate is filtered, separated and dried again to obtain low-molecule lignin. The method has characteristics of high recycling rate, less investment, no pollution and low energy consumption.

Abstract:More than 695.7 million m 3 of papermaking wastewater is discharged globally. It contains a mixture of complex pollutants, of which lignin is the major constituent (600–1000 mg/L) of papermaking black liquor, making it the second-largest energy-containing biomass globally and accounting for 47.4% and 59.4% of chemical oxygen demand (16,400 ± 120 mg/L) and chroma (3100 ± 22.32 mg/L) of papermaking wastewater. The complex process and dissolved pollutants are responsible for high pH, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, dark color, and toxicity. Papermaking wastewater has emerged as a substantial source of environmental pollution as the conventional wastewater treatment processes are high cost and seldom efficacious. This work introduces the shortcomings of the common treatment methods for papermaking wastewater and lignin, focusing on lignin biodegradation and discussing the metabolic pathways and application prospects of lignin-degrading microbial species. A comprehensive review of the existing lignin treatment methods has proposed that the reasonable amalgamation of biodegradation and various physicochemical techniques are environmentally friendly, sustainable, and economical. Lignin extraction from papermaking wastewater by technology combination is an effective approach to recover valuable organic materials and detoxify wastewater. This review focuses on recent breakthroughs and future trends in papermaking wastewater treatment and lignin removal, with special emphasis on biodegradation, recovery, and utilization of lignin, providing guidance for the mechanism exploration of lignin-degrading microorganisms and the optimization of high-value chemical production.

Abstract:New technique has been used to extract of lignin by adding carboxylic acid derivates and organic solvent to precipitate and extract lignin from black liquor (pulp wastewater). Through this new treatment process, new carboxylate which is decomposed to carbondioxide, water and metal oxide at the high temperature was formed. The process of using organic carboxylic acid and organic solvent to precipitate and extract lignin is low-cost and can not cause second pollution. The lignin obtained through this new process is water insoluble and thermoplastic. Its weigh average molecular weight, purity, and glass transition temperature are higher than 2000, 90% and 150°C, respectively. Through the methods of thermoplastic modification, the thermoplastic properties for high purity lignin-based composite materials are improved significantly. Its melt flow ratio, tensile strength and elongation at break are 0.73 g/10 min, 11.8 MPa, and 21%, respectively. Thermoplastic lignin-based composite materials have good processing properties as well as synthetic polymers for extruding, injection molding, and blowing processes. Lignin, as a kind of natural thermoplastic polymers with good processing properties, can be carried out to process for film, foam, and thermoplastic composite.

Abstract:Fractionation and purification of lignin form pulping black liquor by the organic acid precipitation method was studied in this paper to meet the demands of resource utilization of pulping black liquor. The narrow molecular weigh distribution fraction of lignin could be obtained by citric acid, as shown by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The effects of reaction temperature, pH of acid evolution endpoint and speed of centrifuge were evaluated for the process of classification. The results of three factors quadratic orthogonal combination experiment demonstrated that the optimal condition of fractionation and purification was as follows: citric acid saturated solution, 40°C, pH 5.0 and centrifuge speed is 1000rpm. Under these conditions, the Mn, Mw and Mz of lignin fraction was 1147, 1901 and 2854, the dispersing coefficient D was measured to be 1.65 which smaller than the unfractionated lignin. The FT-IR and UV spectroscopic studies demonstrated that the classification and purification have no distinct effects on the structure and the integrity of lignin molecular was keeped.

Abstract:Lignin with important biological functions is the second abundant natural product, its content is only less than cellulose in plant. But the lignin must be extracted from the cellulose fraction in making paper pulp process leading energy_requiring, cost_increasing and pollution. Also, the lignin has negative effect on the digestibility of silage grass. So it is of considerable interest to reduce the lignin content in resource plants. The paper reviews the progress of lignin biosynthesis and regulation. The feasibility of reducing the lignin content and altering its composition for improving paper pulp production and decreasing pollution are discussed.

Abstract:The complex interlacing structure among cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin and the unique properties of lignin itself limit the value-added utilization of the lignin. As the “upstream” process of biorefinery, lignin separation technology is very important for lignin conversion into high-value materials. However, it is not easy to extract lignin with relatively complete structure without affecting performance from biomass raw materials. Notably, most of reviews regarding lignin focus on its degradation. The extraction or separation methods are not introduced in detail, and the effects of these methods on raw materials or lignin have not been reported. Herein, this paper critically reviews the changes in physicochemical properties and structure of lignin caused by several mild organic solvent extraction methods and new ionic liquids which has been widely used in recent years. Furthermore, the application and potential economic benefits of these lignin are summarized. These methods promote the effective utilization of lignin, which is no longer limited to heat energy, but also alleviates the solid waste disposal problem caused by lignin as waste stream. Finally, perspectives on the future research on the lignin separation, depolymerization and application are highlighted. This review may provide an insight for the development of bio-refining technology.

Abstract:Ten strains of wood-rot fungi were compared of their ability to produce lignin-degradation enzymes and viability,of which,three of them were separated and purified by the author and other seven strains were got from several culture collection agencies.Three strains which have more powerful ability to produce lignin-degradation enzymes and rapid mycelium growth rate were chosen.Their ability to degrade lignin in wheat straw and to produce lignin-degradation enzymes in liquid media were detected.The results show that Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trametes versicolor Sp1 are high effective lignin-degradation fungi.Their can be the basis of further research.
Separation and Utilization of Pulp and Paper Process Residuals

Abstract:Pulp and paper process residuals are primarily made up of lignin, cellulose and semicellulose. In this study we attempted to apply environmentally friendly and economically feasible technologies to separate and utilize those components for beneficial purposes. Biological acid precipitation was shown to be suitable for the separation of lignin from the process wastewater. In the case of cellulose and semicellulose, bioconversion was explored to produce fuel ethanol using simultaneous saccharification and cofermentation (SSCF). The organic acids (mainly citric acid and acetic acid) produced from Saccharomycopsis Lipolytic can be achieved at the lowest pH (3.6) and in this situation the maximum lignin precipitation (78.6%) occurred. Biological acid precipitation also leads to good removal of COD and color, reaching 87.6% and 68.4%, respectively. Bioconversion of pulp and paper sludge by SSCF resulted in maximum ethanol concentration of 5.69g/L using mixed cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Escherichia coli KO11.

Abstract:Due to a combination of rapid consumption of fossil fuels such as coal and oil with gradual increase in people's awareness of environmental protection, the research for substitute resources has become a hot spot. Because of their abundant sources of raw materials, fast regeneration rate and low greenhouse gas emissions, biomass resources have drawn much attentions. Woody fiber is one of the richest renewable biomass on earth, in which lignin is the largest renewable aromatic compound resource, therefore possessing a very broad application prospect. Nowadays, a large number of reviews on lignin extraction methods have been written while there are few explorations on the mechanisms behind those methods. Thus, the principles of several typical lignin extraction methods were described in this article. These principles were explored with the hope to provide a reference for future development of lignin extraction.

Abstract:The lignin was extracted and purified by organic acid from pulping black liquor, and the process and influencing factors of extraction and purification were studied. The results of single factor experiments showed that the citric acid which contains three -COOH was suitable to extract and purify lignin. The results of orthogonal experiment demonstrated that the optimal condition of extraction and purification was as follows: citric acid saturated solution, 80 degrees C, pH value of acid evolution endpoint was 3.0. The analysis of FT-IR spectrum, GPC and DSC indicated that the type of lignin extracted by citric acid was G-S, and the lignin was characterized as complete structure, higher molecular weight and Tg. The study on extraction technology of high purity lignin by citric acid method is hopeful to overcome the disadvantages of exorbitant cost and secondary pollution caused by the residues from lignin separation. It could change waste into valuables and put resource utilization of pulping black liquor into practice.
