Abstract:With papermaking black liquor as its main source, Lignin is an important material that can be used in industry. But most of lignin has been discharged to the nature, causing environmental pollution. In terms of utilizing resources and protecting environment, it is necessary to reclaim and recycle lignin. Abstract:This paper summarizes the possible application of lignin extraction from black liquor and the development of lignin extraction technology. Lignin extraction from black liquor is an important, economical method to resolve the bottleneck associated with the recovery boiler and achieve the targeted capacity expansion in pulp mills. A few of key issues must be taken into cosideration when lignin extraction technology is adopted on the industrial scale.

Abstract:Lignin from pulping waste liquor has attracted more and more attention recently because of its abundance and low cost.It can be modified and used as sand-fixing agent to improve some properties of sand or soil,such as the compressive strength,the ability of resistant to wind erosion,aggregate content.In this paper,the characteristic chemical structures of lignin,structure and sand-fixing efficiency of several modified lignin sand-fixing agent were reviewed.Finally,some modified methods were suggested and these suggestions would be useful for developing effective lignin sand-fixing agent and fully utilizing the lignin from pulping waste liquor.

Abstract:Along with the social development,mankind is plunging into a difficult position of excessive consumption of resources and increasing environment pollution.To realize the sustainable development of mankind society,it is necessary to search renewable resource and adopt green chemical technology to reduce environment pollution.Lignin is the abundant natural resource only next to cellulose in amount.Industrial lignin is the byproduct of pulping and papermaking,but its reutilization ratio is low now.Most of the industrial lignin is discharged with spent water,not only causing pollution but also wasting the resource.The utilization of industrial lignin has great economic,social and environmental benefits.In order to realize the ecological utilization of industrial lignin,the market demand,cost-performance ratio of the product,greening of production technology and how to develop the characteristics of industrial lignin must be taken into account.The most important factor to ensure the utilization of industrial lignin is technological innovation.The research and application of modified industrial lignin used as water reducer for concrete,water treatment agent and dispersant of coal-water slurry have achieved great progress,which are successful examples of ecological utilization of industrial lignin.

Abstract:Nowadays, the production of industrial chemicals such as dispersants, adsorbents, flocculants and adhesives, is still dominated by traditional fossil energy sources, whereas the use of which often causes serious pollution and damage to the environment. As an all-natural raw material, lignin is found in abundance in agricultural waste and black liquor from the pulp and paper industry. Recently, much attention has been paid to the development and research of lignin industrial supplies, and meanwhile dispersants and adhesives made from lignin have been widely used in construction and plastics manufacturing industries. Therefore, this paper reviewed the current research process of common lignin industrial products and common laboratory lignin modification methods, and further analyzed the possibilities of modification and research directions based on the lignin structure. Finally, the modifications and applications of lignin in this review are intended to effectively reduce the dependence of toxic and harmful chemicals as well as improving the utilization of lignin as a natural resource.

Abstract:The viewpoint on resource utilization of alkaline pulping black liquor is put forward which is based on the pollution situation of domestic paper industry and environmental protection. The structure and properties of lignin as well as its sulfonation process and mechanism are introduced in this paper. Abstract:Lignin is an abundant renewable resource and shows a great potential tor appllcataon. In recent years, research on the application of lignin has received much attention. In this work, the recent research status on the comprehensive application of lignin is reviewed. Two kinds of application are introduced：used directly and used after liquefaction. The research situation of lignin liquefaction for bio-oil and phenolic compounds is discussed in detail. In addition, the liquefaction mechanism is also summarized. Finally, the problems and difficulties involved are discussed, the research direction on the application of lignin is proposed.

Abstract:Lignin is a renewable and available resource rich in aromatic rings. Abundant waste lignin can be produced from the pulp and paper industry as well as bioethanol technology derived from enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose. However, the lignin conversion is as low as 2%. From the viewpoint of resource utilization and environmental conservation, the importance of efficient use of lignin, especially of waste lignin, should be addressed. The research progress on converting of lignin is relatively slow in the last decades, and the main techniques include catalytic cracking, hydrolysis, (sulfur-containing or sulfur-free) metals catalyzed reduction and oxidation. After depolymerization, the further upgrading of derived phenolic fragments uses (sulfur-containing or sulfur-free) metals to remove the oxygens to form the final alkanes and aromatics. The purpose of this review is to summary the progress of depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation of lignin such as catalysts, reaction conditions, reaction mechanisms, deactivation of catalysts. We also present the suggestions and outlooks concerning on the current techniques and further directions towards key researches.

Abstract:This paper highlights the wide ranges of the utilization of the isolated lignin in the aspects of industry,biochemistry and agriculture.Based on the idea of the ecology and integrated utilization,the isolation approach should not be focused on remaining less altered cellulose,while abandoning and destroying the other compositions,but on the compromises between the remaining the content of carbohydrate and less structural alteration of lignin.The utilization of lignin in the field of physiology and biochemistry shows the bright future.This could make other compositions besides cellulose recycled and getting fully utilized in ecological system.It is expected that the utilization of lignin and integrated utilization of biomass is the profound policy we should take in the future.

Abstract:The separation of lignin from the black liquor generated during alkaline pulping is reviewed in this article with an emphasis on chemistry. Based on published accounts, the precipitation of lignin from spent pulping liquor by addition of acids can be understood based on dissociation equilibria of weak acid groups, which affects the solubility behavior of lignin-related chemical species. Solubility issues also govern lignin separation technologies based on ultrafiltration membranes; reduction in membrane permeability is often affected by conditions leading to decreased solubility of lignin decomposition products and the presence of colloidal matter. Advances in understanding of such phenomena have potential to enable higher-value uses of black liquor components, including biorefinery options, alternative ways to recover the chemicals used to cook pulp, and debottlenecking of kraft recovery processes.

Study On Bagasse Pulp Black Liquor Treatment By Ultrafiltration And Acidification

Abstract:Spent liquor from alkali pulping contain lignin molecules and lignin derivatives such as aromatic, phenol hydroxyl, and phenol compounds. Existing methods of processing black liquor always have some shortcomings and have much influence on resources and the environment. In this paper, bagasse pulp black liquor was first treated by ultrafiltration, Alkali lignin was then precipitated by acidification. Compared to competing methods, the alkali lignin was purer. More than 90% of the inorganic salts were separated. At the same time, 70% of acid was saved compared to acidification only. Infrared spectrum analysis showed that the chemical structure of alkali lignin was protected very well. Many polar functional groups in the lignin Could have strong reactions with H and Cl of PVC and thus the mechanical properties and heat endurance of PVC materials can be enhanced. Undoubtedly it is an effective path to the continued protection of resources and the environment.

Abstract:The lignin was extracted and purified by organic acid from pulping black liquor, and the process and influencing factors of extraction and purification were studied. The results of single factor experiments showed that the citric acid which contains three -COOH was suitable to extract and purify lignin. The results of orthogonal experiment demonstrated that the optimal condition of extraction and purification was as follows: citric acid saturated solution, 80 degrees C, pH value of acid evolution endpoint was 3.0. The analysis of FT-IR spectrum, GPC and DSC indicated that the type of lignin extracted by citric acid was G-S, and the lignin was characterized as complete structure, higher molecular weight and Tg. The study on extraction technology of high purity lignin by citric acid method is hopeful to overcome the disadvantages of exorbitant cost and secondary pollution caused by the residues from lignin separation. It could change waste into valuables and put resource utilization of pulping black liquor into practice.

Abstract:With the continuous transformation of social consumption demand to the direction of green and sustainable development, the demand of humans for green and renewable resources is increasing. Lignin, as a naturally synthesized polymer, is widely found in plant cell walls. It has high carbon content and energy storage, which is renewable. If used reasonably, it is expected to become one of the most available renewable biological resources. At present, although there is a large amount of lignin in agricultural wastes, its extraction and valid utilization are limited due to its structural complexity and heterogeneity. Therefore, it is of great significance to effectively and rationally utilize and realize the high-value conversion of lignin. To further study how to efficiently extract lignin from agricultural biomass and its characterization and application, the pretreatment methods of agricultural waste for lignin extraction are introduced at the beginning of this chapter, including physical, chemical, and biological treatments. Then, the traditional methods of lignin extraction from different agricultural biomass (such as high-boiling alcohol solvent extraction and organic solvent extraction) are described. Thirdly, some typical characterization techniques of lignin are introduced, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (HSQC NMR) methods. In terms of application, lignin has been applied to different fields due to its good dispersion, adhesion, and surface activity, such as industrial, agricultural, and medical fields. Besides, lignin is also used as a binder, dispersant, and surfactant. In general, lignin, as a natural renewable polymer, has a high possibility of industrial production due to its abundant resources and low price. In the pursuit of green environmental protection and sustainable development today, it has become a key research hotspot.

Abstract:New technique has been used to extract of lignin by adding carboxylic acid derivates and organic solvent to precipitate and extract lignin from black liquor (pulp wastewater). Through this new treatment process, new carboxylate which is decomposed to carbondioxide, water and metal oxide at the high temperature was formed. The process of using organic carboxylic acid and organic solvent to precipitate and extract lignin is low-cost and can not cause second pollution. The lignin obtained through this new process is water insoluble and thermoplastic. Its weigh average molecular weight, purity, and glass transition temperature are higher than 2000, 90% and 150°C, respectively. Through the methods of thermoplastic modification, the thermoplastic properties for high purity lignin-based composite materials are improved significantly. Its melt flow ratio, tensile strength and elongation at break are 0.73 g/10 min, 11.8 MPa, and 21%, respectively. Thermoplastic lignin-based composite materials have good processing properties as well as synthetic polymers for extruding, injection molding, and blowing processes. Lignin, as a kind of natural thermoplastic polymers with good processing properties, can be carried out to process for film, foam, and thermoplastic composite.

Abstract:According to an old proverb, 'you can make anything out of lignin, except money'. The complexity of lignin's structure and many inferior characteristics of lignin, such as its insolubility in organic solvent and poor reactivity related to it large molecular weight, have posed significant challenges to lignin valorization. Driven mainly by the commercial availability of large amounts of kraft lignin and hydrolysis lignin in kraft pulp mills and cellulosic ethanol plants, there is a pressing need to valorize lignin for high‐value chemical and material products for better overall profitability for the plants, and for the emerging bioeconomy. To this end, we have developed, over 10 years and in several publications, an engineering approach to lignin valorization. This perspective paper provides an overview of this process and concretizes the research achieved in support of lignin valorization. In the method presented, lignin is first de‐polymerized into de‐polymerized lignin (DL) at a high yield and with a tunable Mw (weight average molecular weight). The DL is then utilized as a mixture (no separation needed) to substitute directly petroleum‐based phenol (up to 75% substitution), polyols (up to 50% substitution), and bis‐phenol A (100 substitution) in preparation of bio‐based phenolic resins, polyurethane foams, and epoxy resins. The DL products were also used to replace petroleum‐based antioxidants resulting in enhanced thermo‐oxidative and thermal stability of polyethylene in the synthesis of bio‐based resins / plastic composites. This approach has demonstrated both technical and economic feasibility, generating a payback period of approximately 3 years for a commercial capacity of 40 000 t/y. Thus, Lignin valorization beyond energy use can be profitable, and the old proverb may prove wrong.
