Abstract:This Perspective is an update to our more extensive survey of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) published in 2007. During this time, the SECM field retained its momentum by expanding into new areas and meeting the emerging scientific and technological challenges. Here we focus on most prominent developments such as high-resolution imaging, investigation of structures and processes on the nanoscale, alternative energy applications, and new approaches to solving "real world" problems. The fabrication of novel SECM probes and related theoretical advances are also discussed.

Abstract:A new mode of the scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) operation was developed that combines reagent delivery from the nanopipette with electron transfer at the conductive substrate and ion transfer across the liquid/liquid interface supported at the nanopipette tip. This approach offers potential advantages for measurements of heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics and reaction rate imaging by enabling straightforward separation of the contributions of surface topography and reactivity features to the tip current. It addresses some other long-standing technical issues, including sensitive probing of low signal sources (e. g., immobilized enzymes or catalyst particles) without diffusional broadening and the elimination of the elevated background signal in generation/collection-type experiments. The high spatial resolution attainable in electron transfer/ion transfer mode experiments and the absence of redox mediator species in the bulk solution are advantageous for studies of biological cells.

Abstract:Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is a scanning probe technique capable of imaging substrate topography and measuring the local electrochemical reactivity of interfaces. Since introduced by Allen J. Bard and co-workers in 1989, it has expanded into a wide variety of fields, such as nanomaterial characterization, energy, kinetics, electrocatalysis, metal anti-corrosion, biology and instrumental development. SECM uses an ultra-microelectrode as the probe to record redox current during probe scanning across sample surfaces to obtain local topography and electrochemical reactivity of samples. Specifically, three main topics are reviewed and discussed: (1) the working principles and operating modes of SECM; (2) the recent developments in the application of SECM in energy science, including solar cell, rechargeable batteries, fuel cell and supercapacitors, with an emphasis on the last five years (2019-2023); (3) the perspectives and outlook of SECM in various energy devices. We anticipate that a wider adoption of SECM by the energy community will allow for the operando characterization of many types of reactions, and hold the potential to provide new insights into the structure/activity and composition/activity relationships.

Abstract:Over the last 2 decades, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has been extensively employed for topographic imaging and mapping surface reactivity on the micrometer scale. We used flat, polished nanoelectrodes as SECM tips to carry out feedback mode imaging of various substrates with nanoscale resolution. Constant-height and constant-current images of plastic and Au compact disc surfaces and more complicated objects (computer chips and wafers) were obtained. The possibility of simultaneous imaging of surface topography and electrochemical reactivity was demonstrated. Very fast mass transfer at nanoelectrodes allowed us to obtain high-quality electrochemical images in viscous media under steady-state conditions, e.g., in 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium-bis(tetrafluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (C(8)mimC(1)C(1)N) ionic liquid. Ion-transfer-based imaging was also performed using nanopipets as SECM tips.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a label-free spectroscopic technique that is highly sensitive to various surface reactions. Incorporating SPR into electrochemical measurements has emerged as a powerful method to study both faradaic and non-faradaic processes. SPR microscopy (SPRM) integrates an optical microscope into SPR detection, which further offers high throughput detection and spatially resolved information at an electrode surface and thus, has attracted attention especially in single entity electrochemical studies. In this review, the progress in the studies of electrochemical interfaces by SPR and SPRM during the past two years will be discussed.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts requires a deeper understanding of their structure-activity relationship. Scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) and scanning electrochemical cell microscope (SECCM) are powerful techniques for mapping surface activity site and investigating heterogeneous electrocatalytic processes down to the nanoscale in situ and even operando, thus playing a pivotal role in studying electrocatalytic mechanism. In this review, we introduce the fundamentals of SECM and SECCM, and the principles of the most frequently used operational modes. This review describes work done in SECM and SECCM since 2021 with a particular emphasis on emerging electrocatalytic applications and noteworthy trends.

Abstract:Investigation of the abnormal behavior of pathological cells and tissues can provide important references for understanding the pathological mechanism of critical diseases and screening new drugs.Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), an electrochemical principle-based scanning probe microscope, can record the currents or potentials when the probe scans above the sample surface and performs the characterizations of morphology and obtains various chemical informations of living cells in an in-situ, real-time and local way.The applications of SECM in the studies of critical diseases-related cells, cell spheroids and microtissues have been rapidly developed in the past 10 years.From the perspective of disease-related SECM researches, this review summarizes the research progress of SECM in the biomedical field from 2010 to 2020 from the levels of single cell to cell spheroid and microtissue.Firstly, the instrument composition, probe types and working modes of SECM are introduced.Secondly, the application progress of SECM in neurons, cardiomyocytes and tumor cells is introduced.Thirdly, we introduce the latest applications of SECM in cell spheroids and microtissues.Finally, we propose and prospect the challenges and development directions of the future applications of SECM in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Investigation of the mechanism and reaction kinetics of photoelectrochemical reaction processes is significantly important for accelerating the conversion efficiency of light to electric and the developments of new high efficient green photovoltaic devices. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), a kind of electrochemical scanning probe microscopy with high spatio-temporal resolution, can provide photoelectrochemical current of samples, study the reaction mechanism and kinetics of photoelectrochemical reactions, and evaluate and optimize the activities of photoelectrochemical catalysts. It has become an important characterization technique in studies of various interfacial photoelectrochemical processes in recent years. This review introduces the applications of SECM in the photoelectrochemistry field. First, the experimental system, working principle and working modes of SECM in the photoelectrochemical studies are introduced. Then the applications of SECM in investigations of photosynthesis, photoinduced electron transfer, electrogenerated chemiluminescence, water splitting and solar cells are summarized in detail. Final, the outlook of the future applications and developments of SECM in the photoelectrochemical field are discussed.

Abstract:Since its inception in 1989, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has been used to investigate the localized corrosion of systems with high spatial and temporal resolution. This includes but is not limited to a study of pitting initiation and propagation, surface microstructure, and electron transfer kinetics. The effectiveness of various protection schemes including coatings, inhibitors, and treatments has also been assessed. A comprehensive review of corrosion papers involving SECM from 1993 to present has been compiled with works broken down according to the metal and protection strategy employed.

Abstract:Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is discussed as a versatile tool to provide localized (electro)chemical information in the context of biosensor research. Advantages of localized electrochemical measurements will be discussed and a brief introduction to SECM and its operation modes will be given. Experimental challenges of the different detection modes of SECM and its applicability for different fields in biosensor research are discussed. Among these are the evaluation of immobilization techniques by probing the local distribution of biological activity, the visualization of diffusion profiles of reactants, cofactors, mediators, and products, and the elucidation of (local) kinetic parameters. The combination of SECM with other scanning-probe techniques allows to maximize the information on a given biosensing system. The potential of SECM as a tool in micro-fabrication aiming for the fabrication of microstructured biosensors will be shortly discussed.

Abstract:Since introduced by Allen J. Bard and co-workers in 1986, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has been used as a powerful scanning probe technique in wide variety of fields, such as metal anti-corrosion, material characterization, biomedicine and new energy technology. In recent years, SECM plays a. more and more important role in the field of photoelectrochemical energy research. In this paper, we introduce the basic principle as well as feedback and generation-collection operation-modes of SECM and highlight some of the recent advances on SECM applied to studies of solar cell and solar water splitting. SECM coupling with light source used as an effective tool for investigating interfacial charge transfer process and the regeneration kinetics of dyes in dye-sensitized solar cell are described. Additionally, SECM used as a powerful screening technique for developing efficient photocatalysts is discussed. Furthermore, we provide a brief research example that related SECM used as a combinatorial screening technique to investigate III A, IV A and V A group metal ions as dopants for WO3 for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. This work has been conducted in our group recently, and it is reported for the first time. The details of this work are presented, including preparing doped WO, arrays on FTO glass substrate, setting up SECM testing system, photoelectrochemical scanning doped WO, arrays, screening scan results and proving scan results on scaled-up films. The SECM screening results show that 2% similar to 4% In doped WO3, 2% similar to 4% Sn4+ doped WO3 and 4% 6% Sb5+ doped WO, have higher photoelectrochemical activity than un-doped WO3. On the basis of research results, it is concluded that SECM is a convenient and efficient screening technique, has a promising application prospect in the development of photocatalysts. Finally, we briefly describe and forecast the development trend of SECM in the field of photoelectrochemical energy research.

Abstract:Over the last 30 years, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has become a fundamental technique in corrosion research. With its high spatial resolution and its ability to study local electrochemistry, it contributes essentially to the understanding of corrosion processes. By using selective micro- and nano-sensors, concentration profiles of different corrosion relevant species, from protons to metal ions, can be established. This review provides a comprehensive overview about SECM based techniques and discusses various types of microsensors, including materials selection and preparation techniques, and it provides extensive tables on redox-couples for specific corrosion research applications.

Abstract:The scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) can directly monitor electrochemical processes at interfaces of electrodes and electrolyte and has been used as an analytical tool for lithium-ion battery (LIB) study. Through SECM, we can visualize the electrochemical reactivities of active species in LIBs in-situ during cycling. This review begins with introducing SECM-based LIB research and then summarizes the working mechanism and operating modes of the technique as well as combinations of SECM with other techniques for LIB study. We review results with focus on the interfacial properties, surface reactions and electrochemical activity of different electrode materials for LIBs. The investigations of battery degradation, kinetic parameters and electrolyte swelling by SECM are also discussed. Finally, the current limitations and perspectives are also described regarding future developments.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy of metallic biomaterials: reaction rate and ion release imaging modes

Abstract:The Scanning Electrochemical Microscope (SECM) is a nonoptical scanning microscopic instrument capable of imaging highly localized electrical currents associated with charge transfer reactions on metallic biomaterials surfaces. The SECM operates as an aqueous electrochemical cell under bipotentiostatic control with a microelectrode and sample independently biased as working electrodes. Microelectrode current and position is recorded as it is scanned very near a metallurgically polished planar sample surface. To date, the SECM has imaged metallic biomaterials surfaces in oxygen reaction rate imaging (ORRI) and ion release and deposition imaging (IRDI) modes. In ORRI, sample and microelectrode are biased at sufficiently negative potentials to reduce absorbed oxygen. As the microelectrode scans areas of active oxygen reduction, localized diffusion fields with decreased oxygen solution concentrations are encountered and resultant decrements in microelectrode current are observed. In IRDI mode the sample is positively biased and the microelectrode is negatively biased. The microelectrode detects anodic dissolution products with highest currents being observed over the most active areas. Performance of the SECM has been evaluated on Ni minigrids, gamma-1 Hg-Ag dental amalgam crystals, and sintered beads of Co-Cr-Mo alloy which represent significantly different geometries and corrosion processes to help demonstrate the potential of this instrument. The SECM is a valuable tool for imaging microelectrochemical processes on the surfaces of metallurgically polished metallic biomaterials samples and a wide variety of other surfaces of biological interest where charge transfer reactions occur. The SECM allows selective biasing of metallic biomaterials surfaces and Faradaic reactions can be selectively imaged while the surface is in the active, passive, or transpassive state.

Abstract:In electrochemical reactions, the study of catalyst activity is becoming increasingly extensive. The insights into the active sites of catalysts have been providing ideas for efficiently designing highly active and selective catalysts. Therefore, powerful in-situ characterization tools can provide strong evidence and persuasive power for electrochemical process. Scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) has gained increasing attention as a powerful analytical tool for characterizing catalytic activity in electrochemical process. In this review, we summarized the application methods of SECM in electrochemical reactions such as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), nitrate reduction reaction (NitRR). We also briefly introduced the common operation modes of SECM. The recent progress of SECM in probing the reaction sites, reaction kinetics and charge transfer of electrocatalysts is reviewed. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects of SECM in characterizing the activity of electrocatalysts. This paper provides a reference for readers on SECM experimental method and theoretical analysis.

Abstract:With the rapid development and maturity of electrochemical CO2 conversion involving cathodic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), conventional ex situ characterizations gradually fall behind in detecting real-time products distribution, tracking intermediates, and monitoring structural evolution, etc. Nevertheless, advanced in situ techniques, with intriguing merits like good reproducibility, facile operability, high sensitivity, and short response time, can realize in situ detection and recording of dynamic data, and observe materials structural evolution in real time. As an emerging visual technique, scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) presents local electrochemical signals on various materials surface through capturing micro-current caused by reactants oxidation and reduction. Importantly, SECM holds particular potentials in visualizing reactive intermediates at active sites and obtaining instantaneous morphology evolution images to reveal the intrinsic reactivity of active sites. Therefore, this review focuses on SECM fundamentals and its specific applications toward CO2RR and OER, mainly including electrochemical behavior observation on local regions of various materials, target products and onset potentials identification in real-time, reaction pathways clarification, reaction kinetics exploration under steady-state conditions, electroactive materials screening and multi-techniques coupling for a joint utilization. This review undoubtedly provides a leading guidance to extend various SECM applications to other energy-related fields.

Abstract:Increasing demand for sustainable energy resources necessitates the advancements of electrochemical energy storage and conversion (EESC) devices. For optimal device performance, it is imperative to have comprehensive insight into the multiple electrochemical processes occurring at the electrode–electrolyte interface from the atomic/molecular scale to the nanoscale. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), a powerful in situ technique, offers the unique advantage of probing electrochemical processes and topography with nanoscale resolution. This review emphasizes the crucial role of SECM in providing localized information about surface heterogeneity, electrode reactions, and their kinetics that lead to performance deterioration in batteries, fuel cells, and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Atomic Force Microscopy-Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (AFM-SECM) has evolved to be a powerful tool for simultaneous topographical-electrochemical measurements at local material surfaces with high spatial resolution. Such measurements are crucial for understanding structure-activity relationships relevant to a wide range of applications in material science, life science and chemical processes. AFM-SECM integrates classic SECM and AFM to achieve on-step acquisition of unparalleled high-spatial-resolution surface topology and nanoscale electrochemical images and holds promising potential to unveil fundamental interfacial properties or activity at nanoscale. Despite the rapid development of AFM-SECM, its unique principles, capabilities, and applications have not been sufficiently understood and utilized. The present review provides a short critical overview of the evolution of AFM-SECM, the major principles and operation modes as well as the AFM-SECM probe designs. The current applications of AFM-SECM in materials, biological and chemical sciences are critically discussed to highlight the remaining challenges of the AFM-SECM and perspectives on its further development.
