Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a label-free spectroscopic technique that is highly sensitive to various surface reactions. Incorporating SPR into electrochemical measurements has emerged as a powerful method to study both faradaic and non-faradaic processes. SPR microscopy (SPRM) integrates an optical microscope into SPR detection, which further offers high throughput detection and spatially resolved information at an electrode surface and thus, has attracted attention especially in single entity electrochemical studies. In this review, the progress in the studies of electrochemical interfaces by SPR and SPRM during the past two years will be discussed.

Abstract:A novel fluorescence emission difference technique is proposed for further enhancements of the lateral resolution in surface plasmon-coupled emission microscopy (SPCEM). In the proposed method, the difference between the image with phase modulation by using a 0-2π vortex phase plate (VPP) along with a diaphragm and the original image obtained from SPCEM is used to estimate the spatial distribution of the analyzed sample. By optimizing the size of the diaphragm and the subtractive factor, the lateral resolution can be enhanced by about 20% and 33%, compared with that in SPCEM with a single 0-2π VPP and conventional wide-field fluorescence microscopy, respectively. Related simulation results are presented to verify the capability of the proposed method for improving lateral resolution and reducing imaging distortion. It is believed that the proposed method has potentials to improve the performance of SPCEM, thus facilitating biological observation and research.

Abstract:This Perspective is an update to our more extensive survey of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) published in 2007. During this time, the SECM field retained its momentum by expanding into new areas and meeting the emerging scientific and technological challenges. Here we focus on most prominent developments such as high-resolution imaging, investigation of structures and processes on the nanoscale, alternative energy applications, and new approaches to solving "real world" problems. The fabrication of novel SECM probes and related theoretical advances are also discussed.

Abstract:A new mode of the scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) operation was developed that combines reagent delivery from the nanopipette with electron transfer at the conductive substrate and ion transfer across the liquid/liquid interface supported at the nanopipette tip. This approach offers potential advantages for measurements of heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics and reaction rate imaging by enabling straightforward separation of the contributions of surface topography and reactivity features to the tip current. It addresses some other long-standing technical issues, including sensitive probing of low signal sources (e. g., immobilized enzymes or catalyst particles) without diffusional broadening and the elimination of the elevated background signal in generation/collection-type experiments. The high spatial resolution attainable in electron transfer/ion transfer mode experiments and the absence of redox mediator species in the bulk solution are advantageous for studies of biological cells.

Abstract:Over the last 2 decades, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has been extensively employed for topographic imaging and mapping surface reactivity on the micrometer scale. We used flat, polished nanoelectrodes as SECM tips to carry out feedback mode imaging of various substrates with nanoscale resolution. Constant-height and constant-current images of plastic and Au compact disc surfaces and more complicated objects (computer chips and wafers) were obtained. The possibility of simultaneous imaging of surface topography and electrochemical reactivity was demonstrated. Very fast mass transfer at nanoelectrodes allowed us to obtain high-quality electrochemical images in viscous media under steady-state conditions, e.g., in 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium-bis(tetrafluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (C(8)mimC(1)C(1)N) ionic liquid. Ion-transfer-based imaging was also performed using nanopipets as SECM tips.

Abstract:This study explores plasmon-induced electrochemical reactions on single nanoparticles using electrogenerated chemiluminescence microscopy (ECLM). Under laser irradiation, real-time screening showed lower plasmon-induced reaction efficiency for bimetallic Au@Pt nanoparticles compared to monometallic Au nanoparticles. ECLM offers a high-throughput imaging and precise quantitative approach for analyzing photo-electrochemical conversion at single nanoparticle level, valuable for both theoretical exploration and optimization of plasmonic nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is a scanning probe technique capable of imaging substrate topography and measuring the local electrochemical reactivity of interfaces. Since introduced by Allen J. Bard and co-workers in 1989, it has expanded into a wide variety of fields, such as nanomaterial characterization, energy, kinetics, electrocatalysis, metal anti-corrosion, biology and instrumental development. SECM uses an ultra-microelectrode as the probe to record redox current during probe scanning across sample surfaces to obtain local topography and electrochemical reactivity of samples. Specifically, three main topics are reviewed and discussed: (1) the working principles and operating modes of SECM; (2) the recent developments in the application of SECM in energy science, including solar cell, rechargeable batteries, fuel cell and supercapacitors, with an emphasis on the last five years (2019-2023); (3) the perspectives and outlook of SECM in various energy devices. We anticipate that a wider adoption of SECM by the energy community will allow for the operando characterization of many types of reactions, and hold the potential to provide new insights into the structure/activity and composition/activity relationships.

Abstract:Plasmonics has recently come into focus as a very promising technology for high-performance photocatalysis. The hot charge carriers together with the enhanced electric field generated by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation are responsible for the enhanced performance of photocatalysis. Up to now, much work including theoretical and experimental researches has been performed to investigate the plasmon-related enhancement mechanism. Combining plasmonics and electrochemistry at the nanoscale emerges as a new challenge for further widening the application of plasmonic effect. This review summarizes the fundamental principle of LSPR, the mechanism of plasmon-enhanced electrochemistry, and the different electrochemical reactions activated by plasmonics.

Abstract:To obtain detailed information about electrochemistry reactions, a two-electrode electrochemical surface plasmon resonance (EC-SPR) sensor has been proposed. We describe the theory of potential modulation for this novel sensor and determine the factors that can change the SPR resonance angle. The reference electrode in three-electrode configuration was eliminated, and comparing with several other electrode materials, activated carbon (AC) is employed as the suitable counter electrode for its potential stability. Just like three-electrode configuration, the simpler AC two-electrode system can also obtain detailed information about the electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts requires a deeper understanding of their structure-activity relationship. Scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) and scanning electrochemical cell microscope (SECCM) are powerful techniques for mapping surface activity site and investigating heterogeneous electrocatalytic processes down to the nanoscale in situ and even operando, thus playing a pivotal role in studying electrocatalytic mechanism. In this review, we introduce the fundamentals of SECM and SECCM, and the principles of the most frequently used operational modes. This review describes work done in SECM and SECCM since 2021 with a particular emphasis on emerging electrocatalytic applications and noteworthy trends.

Abstract:In electrochemical reactions, the study of catalyst activity is becoming increasingly extensive. The insights into the active sites of catalysts have been providing ideas for efficiently designing highly active and selective catalysts. Therefore, powerful in-situ characterization tools can provide strong evidence and persuasive power for electrochemical process. Scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) has gained increasing attention as a powerful analytical tool for characterizing catalytic activity in electrochemical process. In this review, we summarized the application methods of SECM in electrochemical reactions such as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), nitrate reduction reaction (NitRR). We also briefly introduced the common operation modes of SECM. The recent progress of SECM in probing the reaction sites, reaction kinetics and charge transfer of electrocatalysts is reviewed. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects of SECM in characterizing the activity of electrocatalysts. This paper provides a reference for readers on SECM experimental method and theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Plasmonics based electrochemical microscopy (PECM) has been introduced to image local electrochemical reactions optically. The algorithm used to convert the plasmonic signal to current, however, is not applicable to thin-layer electrochemistry, which is important for microfluidic detection and biosensing applications. Here we introduce a PECM algorithm for both semi-infinite and thin-layer electrochemical geometries. The new algorithm expresses plasmonic signal as local concentration of redox species on the electrode surface, which, together with the diffusion and Nernst equations, determines the current. We validate the algorithm experimentally by fabricating a thin-layer electrochemical cell, consisting of two-parallel electrodes separated with various distances.

Abstract:Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is an attractive technology to in-situ characterize the structural evolution and catalytic performance for various electrocatalysts. However, spatial and temporal resolution coupling are still the obstacles that limit its wide applications. Herein, a new operation mode, Fast Scan mode, was developed by improving the dual-pass scan mode, designing novel hardware structure, and employing thermal drift calibration software to achieve a high spatial and temporal resolution simultaneously. The temporal speed can achieve 4 Hz for a high spatial resolution (less than 30 nm) image. This operation mode was employed to dynamically track the phase transition process of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) over time and characterize the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity on the edge of semiconducting MoS2 quantitatively while minimizing the diffusional broadening effect and total amount of catalytic products generated above the surface. This new approach should be useful for in-situ tracking dynamic electrochemical processes, establishing the structure-activity relationship for structural complex electrocatalysts, and offering a strategy for high-speed scanning with other electrochemical imaging techniques.

Abstract:Plasmon enhanced electrochemistry (PEEC), where specific electrochemical reactions are promoted due to the reduced energy barrier of the reaction processes by the light excited "hot carriers" of the plasmonic nanoparticles, has aroused tremendous interest in recent years. A deep understanding of the PEEC process becomes a key issue for facilitating PEEC catalyst design and improving PEEC performance. This concept article begins with a brief discussion of the macroscopic electrochemical method of PEEC study of the plasmonic nanoparticle ensembles. Following that, we highlight two electrochemical techniques that may possess single nanoparticle sensitivity, i. e., scanning electrochemical microscope and nano-impact electrochemistry. The pros and cons of each technique are discussed and an outlook is given. We hope to provide the readers with the current status of PEEC to evoke reflections regarding the reaction mechanisms, performance improvement, and the utilizations to important systems.

Abstract:The rational design of efficient artificial photosynthetic components requires thorough understandings towards(photo)electrochemical properties and kinetic processes at the solid/liquid interface.Electrochemical scanning probe microscopy(EC-SPM),which enables the high-spatial resolution imaging in an electrolyte environment,becomes an indispensable experimental technique for operando studies of(photo)electrochemistry.This review summarizes the latest results of relevant EC-SPM techniques to study the interfacial properties of electrocatalysts and photoelectrodes.Covered methods include atomic force microscopy,Kelvin probe force microscopy,conductive atomic force microscopy,scanning tunneling microscopy,scanning electrochemical microscopy,and other advanced SPM-based operando techniques.Finally,we offer some perspectives on the future outlook in this fascinating research area.

Abstract:Investigation of the mechanism and reaction kinetics of photoelectrochemical reaction processes is significantly important for accelerating the conversion efficiency of light to electric and the developments of new high efficient green photovoltaic devices. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), a kind of electrochemical scanning probe microscopy with high spatio-temporal resolution, can provide photoelectrochemical current of samples, study the reaction mechanism and kinetics of photoelectrochemical reactions, and evaluate and optimize the activities of photoelectrochemical catalysts. It has become an important characterization technique in studies of various interfacial photoelectrochemical processes in recent years. This review introduces the applications of SECM in the photoelectrochemistry field. First, the experimental system, working principle and working modes of SECM in the photoelectrochemical studies are introduced. Then the applications of SECM in investigations of photosynthesis, photoinduced electron transfer, electrogenerated chemiluminescence, water splitting and solar cells are summarized in detail. Final, the outlook of the future applications and developments of SECM in the photoelectrochemical field are discussed.

Abstract:Direct photocatalysis making use of plasmonic metals has attracted significant attention due to the light-harnessing capabilities of these materials associated with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) features. Thus far, most reported work has been limited to plasmon-induced chemical transformations. Herein, we demonstrate that electrochemical reactions can also be accelerated by plasmonic nanoparticles upon LSPR excitation. Using glucose electrocatalysis as a model reaction system, the direct plasmon-accelerated electrochemical reaction (PAER) on gold nanoparticles is observed. The wavelength- and solution-pH-dependent electrochemical oxidation rate and the dark-field scattering spectroscopy results confirm that the hot charge carriers generated during plasmon decay are responsible for the enhanced electrocatalysis performance. Based on the proposed PAER mechanism, a plasmon-improved glucose electrochemical sensor is constructed, demonstrating the enhanced performance of the non-enzyme sensor upon LSPR excitation. This plasmon-accelerated electrochemistry promises potential applications in (bio)electrochemical energy conversion, electroanalysis, and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:The electrochemical reaction mainly occurs at the electrode/electrolyte interface in the electrochemical system. For a fundamental insight into the interfacial reaction mechanism, in situ/operando analysis of the interfacial evolution at the microscale is essential. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM), noted for its high spatial resolution, real-time imaging, and multifunctional detection, is considered as one of the most important in situ analytical tools for the electrochemical interfaces from the atomic/molecular scale to the nanoscale. This review first introduces the brief principles of typical SPM, such as scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electrochemical microscopy. The applications of in situ SPM in surface and interface analysis for electrochemical energy systems, including electrocatalysts and energy storage batteries, are then presented. In addition, in situ detection of the electric double layer and space charge layer is further discussed. Challenges and future developments in the field are proposed in the outlook.

Recent Progress in Plasmonic based Electrochemiluminescence Biosensors: A Review.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) analysis has become a powerful tool in recent biomarker detection and clinic diagnosis due to its high sensitivity and broad linear range. To improve the analytical performance of ECL biosensors, various advanced nanomaterials have been introduced to regulate the ECL signal such as graphene, gold nanomaterials, and quantum dots. Among these nanomaterials, some plasmonic nanostructures play important roles in the fabrication of ECL biosensors. The plasmon effect for the ECL signal includes ECL quenching by resonant energy transfer, ECL enhancement by surface plasmon resonance enhancement, and a change in the polarized angle of ECL emission. The influence can be regulated by the distance between ECL emitters and plasmonic materials, and the characteristics of polarization angle-dependent surface plasmon coupling. This paper outlines the recent advances of plasmonic based ECL biosensors involving various plasmonic materials including noble metals and semiconductor nanomaterials. The detection targets in these biosensors range from small molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, and cells thanks to the plasmonic effect. In addition to ECL biosensors, ECL microscopy analysis with plasmonic materials is also highlighted because of the enhanced ECL image quality by the plasmonic effect. Finally, the future opportunities and challenges are discussed if more plasmonic effects are introduced into the ECL realm.

Abstract:The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) arises from the collective oscillation of conduction electrons of metal nanostructures which can be used to monitor recognition events of biomolecules at single nanoparticles1. The enhanced electric field around the nanostructures due to LSPR will significantly enhance the Raman scattering, fluorescence and IR spectra, which enable the realization of single molecule detection. In addition, the LSPR will excite high-energy electron-hole pair (referred to as “hot electrons” and “hot holes”) emerging on metal surface. The energetic charges will considerably affect the electrochemical reactions occurring at the nanoparticles. When the plasmonic metallic nanostructures are coupled to other substrates, for example, the semiconductor (i.e., TiO2, MoS2), the plasmon-excited hot electron-hole at nanoparticle surface can communicate with the conductance and valence bands of the semiconductors, resulting in variation in electro/photocatalytic activity. In this talk, we will start with the study on the possibility of LSPR for monitoring biomolecules and their recognition events at single nanoparticles.1 Then, we report the LSPR enhanced IR for biosensing.2 In the third part, we will show how the LSPR accelerates electrochemical reactions of electroactive biomolecules such as glucose on gold nanoparticles and hydrogen evolution reaction at molybdenum disulphide nanosheets.3 Based on the plasmonics accelerated electrochemical reactions (PAER), high sensitive electrochemical biosensors for detection of glucose and other electroactive biomolecules have been constructed. 1.
