Abstract:Concrete arch dams are critical structures, the failure of which would lead to catastrophic effects on a regional scale. Considering the uncertainty characteristics of earthquake and the self-adjustment of inner force of arch dams, it's necessary to investigate the seismic performance index of arch dam for holistically evaluating the seismic safety of arch dam-foundation system subjected to high intensity seismic excitations. By considering the contraction joints movement and concrete material nonlinearity, a series of dynamic response-history analyses of arch dam were carried out under increasing levels of earthquakes. Based on these analyses, the performance index of crest deformation is recommended for the seismic safety assessment of arch dam. And several performance stages of seismic response including the opening of contraction joints and the distribution of concrete damage are also investigated.

Abstract:The investigation of abnormal increases in uplift pressure can lead to the discovery of seepage paths that may cause damage to concrete arch dams. A new methodology has been developed in this study in order to analyze the causes of abnormally high uplift pressure increases and their influence on the structural safety assessments of dams. A series of borehole video tests were performed on an area of the Huaguangtan Dam and its foundations in order to investigate seepage phenomena under different working conditions. The reasons for the existence of the seepage paths causing abnormally high uplift pressures were identified by examining stresses on the dam, using a detailed three-dimensional numerical model. The results from the monitoring and on-site inspection showed that the high uplift pressure did not constitute a direct threat to the dam’s safety. However, grouting treatment of the existing cracks was recommended so as to prevent them from developing further within the dam’s foundations and to ensure the long-term stability of the foundation seepage. It was concluded that the methodology in this study could be used to solve practical engineering problems effectively as well as acting as a frame of reference for similar projects.

Abstract:Baihetan Arch Dam is the world's first 300 m grade ultra-high arch dam using low-heat cement concrete. The hydration characteristics of low-heat cement concrete, especially the effect of temperature rise after arch closure on the temperature field and the working behaviors of the arch dam, are not yet fully understood. This paper investigates the temperature field of the Baihetan arch dam based on the monitoring data and numerical analysis. The monitoring data indicates the temperature rise after closure is about 2.4–7.5 °C inside the dam body until May 2023. Although the annual temperature rise falls yearly, the temperature field has not reached a stable status. The numerical simulation demonstrates that for a super high arch dam like Baihetan, the majority source of the temperature rise after closure is the residual hydration of concrete. Meanwhile the heat backwards from the foundation and the external environment also contribute to the rise inside the dam body near the foundation and the body of small thickness to some extent. The good agreement between monitoring and calculated temperatures verifies that the residual hydration function and parameters adopted can reflect the hydration characteristics of the low-heat cement concrete, and the simulation scheme is practicable to be applied on similar constructions to predict the temperature field.

Abstract:Xiluodu arch dam is one of highest concrete arch dams to be built in the world.Load bearing conditions of the steep slope dam blocks are rather complicated during the construction and operation peroids and there are relatively large stress concentration areas.In order to select appropriate temperature control measures to reduce the stresses in the foundation restriction zones,in this paper dam blocks no.4 and no.25 are taken as representative ones to be constructed in winter and summer,for these dam blocks 3dimensional finite element simulating calculation is carried out,temperature and temperature creep stress distribution condition in these dam blocks with different placement time and layer are obtained.Sensitivity anlyses are performed for some practicable temperature control measures.These provide basis for selection of suitable temperature control measures for the steep slope dam blocks.

Abstract:The deep hole area is a key part of the dam during the construction period, and its temperature field and stress field changes are the focus of the current research on temperature control and crack prevention in the deep hole area. Based on the traditional three-stage and nine-stage temperature control standard, this paper uses three-dimensional finite element temperature stress simulation analysis to study the three major research ideas of shortening the medium-term cooling, shortening the second-stage cooling, and shortening the two at the same time. The concrete silo with a relatively lagging temperature control phase reaches the arching temperature at the same time. The simulation results show that the three temperature control measures can not only keep the stress in the area within a safe range, but also effectively shorten the construction period, providing new ideas for temperature control measures in the deep hole area of the arch dam.

Abstract:If transverse joints aperture can't satisfy the demand of grouting, arch dam cannot be formed into a complete unit nicely, that will affect the safety of arch dam. In this paper, a 3-D nonlinear contact element is developed to represent the transverse joints of arch dam by using Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) based on augmented Lagrange method. The simulation program of temperature field and transverse joints aperture is developed. In the simulation program, all factors that influence transverse joints aperture are considered, such as thermal and mechanical properties, concrete construction process, variation of environment temperature, crown filling and water impoundment orders, and the different mechanical property of joint element before and after crown filling. The variation process of transverse joints aperture of Xiaowan high arch dam during construction is simulated based on the simulation result of temperature field. The simulation result shows that transverse joints apertures in most of the grouting regions can satisfy the requirements of joint grouting after second-stage cooling. Water impoundment presses the transverse joints tight after joint grouting, and the transverse joints will not be drawn open and needn't to be grouted again. After part extracooling 2 degrees C, all transverse joints that cannot be grouted satisfy the requirements of joint grouting.

Abstract:Abstract With the improvement of intelligent temperature control technology, the “three phases and nine stages” temperature control curve used in the casting of extra-high arch dams also needs to be adjusted according to project requirements. In Baihetan Hydropower Station, the design is 120 days to reach the arch sealing temperature, but in the actual construction sometimes need to shorten or extend the length of time through the water, resulting in the arch dam concrete stress changes, so that the arch dam temperature control anti-cracking increased the difficulty. In this paper, we designed 90 days and 150 days to reach the arch sealing temperature through simulation calculation, and compared it with the standard working conditions. The results found that: shortening or extending the arch sealing temperature by 30 days brings less stress changes to the arch dam concrete, and the arch dam as a whole is in a safe range, and the temperature control curve can be reasonably adjusted according to the actual needs of the project.

Abstract:During the construction of a high arch dam, the concrete will have a certain temperature rise after being cooled by the external environment and the concrete’s own hydration. As a high arch dam concrete temperature control stage, the temperature change generated outside the control, the impact on the actual project needs to be analyzed in conjunction with the specific project. This article focuses on the temperature rise phenomenon of an arch dam under construction in China, and analyzes the impact of the temperature rise phenomenon during the current arch dam construction period on the arch dam through monitoring data research and finite element simulation. The results show:(1)The arch dam has obvious temperature rise during the temperature control stage, which mainly occurs when the temperature rises after the cooling temperature is lower than the target temperature of the stage and after the large flow of water is stopped in the temperature control stage, and there is a short-term rise The phenomenon of 3 °C;(2)According to the inversion results of the monitoring of the arch dam, there is a certain safety margin for the concrete stress level of the corresponding parts before and after the temperature rise phenomenon;(3)The temperature rise phenomenon can be controlled at the temperature. During the control period, the tensile stress level of the concrete is prevented from further increasing when the concrete strength is low.

Abstract:Along with the vigorous development of hydropower resources, many super high arch dams are constructing in Southwest region of China. The stability of these arch dams is a key and important problem in the process of design and construction. As for those arch dams constructed in high ground stress valley, foundation excavation may lead to geostress release and unloading of rock mass, and then causes shallow stability problem, which has few successful example for us to learn how to design and reinforce foundation for super high arch dam under these geo-condition. To this problem, unsuitable concept may bring about wrong calculation or numerical simulation, and then lead error to occur during design process. A detailed discussion is conducted focusing on the characters and mechanism of shallow unloading of excavated foundation surface of super high arch dam. Based on the Xiaowan Arch Dam, the calculation method of unbalance force of abutment and surface factor of safety of dam interface are proposed. By employing maximum-minimum principle, the stability of foundation interface of Xiaowan Arch Dam was analyzed and evaluated for supervising the design. The analysis results show that the proposed method is effective to supervise design for those super high arch dams similar to Xiaowan Arch Dam.

Abstract:Based on the basic temperature control scheme,an optimized design of temperature control measure has been carried out by using numerical simulation method.According to the concrete ages of different grout compartments,the concrete temperature rising process and the arching temperatures etc.,aiming at the optimization of technology and economy,the paper studies systematically the feasibility of applying different temperature control measures in different seasons and at different elevations;and obtains characteristic parameters of arch dam temperature fields and stress fields so as to provide a basis for construction units to implement second stage cooling or third stage cooling according to particular demand at that time.

Abstract:The structure of high arch dams is complex and the overall stress level is high. Therefore, the temperature field and stress field of high arch dams have always been the focus of related research. This article starts with the monitoring data, combined with simulation calculation, to study the long-term temperature stress change law of the high arch dam with low-heat cement concrete in the whole dam. After calculation and analysis, the following conclusions are drawn: (1) The use of low-heat cement concrete significantly reduces the difficulty of temperature control, and the maximum temperature of the entire dam is controlled within 27°C; (2) The internal temperature of the low-heat cement concrete arch dam is relatively stable after the arch is sealed. 2-5 years after the arch is closed, the external environment temperature will increase periodically; (3) With the passage of time, the overall tensile stress of the arch dam gradually decreases, and the concrete tensile stress of the main body of the dam is within the range of the 2.0 safety curve during the whole life cycle. There is a certain safety margin. The selection of the new low-heat cement concrete can effectively reduce the difficulty of early maximum temperature control in the project, and the residual hydration heat release effect in the later period is weak. The long-term tensile stress of the concrete in the project is in a safer position, which can make the construction more difficult. The selection of materials for arch dam projects can be used for reference.

Abstract:An analogical project comparative study method for super-high arch dams is presented since simple standard design is not enough due to the complexity and large scale of super-high arch dams.The safety evaluation for super-high arch dams under design could be performed by comparative study with constructed dams.Choosing Ertan and Kolnbrein Arch Dams as analogical projects,the cracking at dam heel and the ultimate bearing capacity of Xiaowan Arch Dam are studied based on similar mesh size,same material model and same finite element software.The refined Xiaowan finite element model including the simulation of the bottom joint of dam body,terrainf,aults,alteration zoner,einforcement measures and unloading zone of the foundation is adopted to evaluate the effects of these factors on the ultimate bearing capacity of the dam.The conclusions are drawn as follows:the ultimate bearing capacity of Xiaowan Arch Dam is higher than that of Kolnbrein Dam and slightly lower than that of Ertan Dam.The safety for grouting curtain in Xiaowan has a narrow safety margin under normal operation.
Analysis on the non-linear earthquake response of transverse joint reinforcement of Xiaowan Arch Dam

Abstract:The Xiaowan Arch Dam is the highest proposal arch dam in the world. The opening of transverse joint because of strong earthquake action is unfavorable to the safety of sealing and dam body. Whether the transverse joint reinforcement is adopted or not is an urgent subject to be solved in theory for the designer. For this reason, the non-linear analysis model of dam with transverse joint reinforcement is applied to the analysis of earthquake response of the Xiaowan Arch dam with transverse joint reinforcement. The calculation results showed the transverse joint reinforcement can obviously control the opening of the transverse joints of arch dam, increase the integrity of arch dam and reduce the worsening of beam stresses caused by the opening of transverse joint to a certain degree. It is necessary to arrange proper vertical steel bars in order to avoid the cracks along beam direction.
A Novel Reconstruction Method of Temperature Field for Thermomechanical Stress Analysis of Arch Dams

Abstract:Temperature distribution on the dam surface plays an important role in reliable thermomechanical stress analysis of arch dams. In this paper, a novel reconstruction method based on a convolutional neural network is proposed for the temperature field on the downstream surface of arch dams. The environmental variables, including solar radiation, mountain shadows, ambient temperature, and weather conditions, are considered in the reconstruction method. The temperature field of the Xiaowan dam is predicted using the proposed method and it agrees well with the monitoring data in the spatial and temporal scale. The results show that the environmental variables significantly affect the temperature on the downstream surface, and result in temporal-spatial variability of nonuniform temperature distribution. In addition, the proposed method solves the data sparseness and lowfrequency acquisition problems that may miss the peak temperature values in the current monitoring system. The thermomechanical stress analysis based on the reconstructed method and finite element method is conducted, and its results illustrate that the proposed reconstructed method can give more realistic performance of the dam and predict possible thermal cracking on the dam surface.

Abstract:The thermal boundary conditions in the construction and operation phases of a concrete arch dam are always complex. After sealing, differences between the arch dam temperature and its sealing temperature can cause compressive or tensile stresses. Based on measured temperature of an arch dam located in China, a temperature rise phenomenon (TRP) is found in the after-sealed regions of the arch dam. By mining and analyzing the temperature data of various monitoring apparatus embedded in the arch dam, higher environment temperature is considered to be the main cause for the occurrence of the TRP. Mathematical methods for complex thermal boundary conditions, including external boundary conditions and internal heat source conditions, are proposed in this paper. A finite element model is implemented with the concern of the construction phase and operation phase of the arch dam. Results confirm good agreement with the measured temperature and verify the conjecture that the TRP occurs mainly because the external temperature of the arch dam is higher than its sealing temperature.
Experimental Study on Cracking, Reinforcement, and Overall Stability of the Xiaowan Super-High Arch Dam

Abstract:The Xiaowan super-high arch dam has faced challenging construction problems. Here, we provide a scientifically-based reference for applying geomechanical model testing to support the nonlinear design of super-high arch dams. We applied experimental similarity theory and techniques. Based on four 3D geomechanical model tests, the dam stress characteristics, deformation distribution, and the safety factors of the dam foundation were identified and compared. We also analyzed cracking characteristics of the up- and downstream dam surfaces and induced joints in the dam heel, the rock mass failure process of the dam-foundation interface, and the abutments. We propose foundation reinforcement measures for weak rock masses, alteration zones, and other faults in the abutments based on the 3D and plane tests each at a different elevation. The results show that all dam deformations remained normal with no yielding or tensile cracking under a normal water load. The reinforced rock mass increased the crack initial safety in the dam heel and toe by ~20 %. The minimum crack initial safety factor (K 1) of the dam heel was 1.4. The induced joint in the dam heel contributed to a reduction in tensile stress at the upstream dam heel, improving K 1. Compared with similar projects following reinforcement measures, the abutment stiffness and overall stability of the Xiaowan arch dam satisfy operational requirements. Four years of monitoring operations show that key areas near the dam remained normal and the dam foundation is functioning well. Our results may also be applicable to the design and construction of similar projects worldwide.
Practical procedure for predicting non-uniform temperature on the exposed face of arch dams

Abstract:Temperature distribution on the exposed face (especially the downstream face) of arch dams is non-uniform, to a certain extent, due to the variation in solar radiation striking the surface. However, the temperature at the same elevation across the dam axis is generally assumed to be uniform in the design specifications for arch dams because there is no accepted procedure for defining the non-uniform temperature field. In this paper, a practical model for predicting the non-uniform temperature of the exposed face is presented by considering both solar radiation and shading effects. The ASHRAE clear sky model was adopted to calculate the solar radiation, and a ray-tracing algorithm was used to analyze the shade of surrounding terrain and the structure per se. The real-life case study presented in this study shows that the proposed model was effective in simulating and accessing reasonable thermal distribution. Subsequently, the case study also reveals that the non-uniform temperature had a significant effect on surface thermal stress and crack propagation.

Abstract:For flood control, outlet structure is generally installed in the body of the dam. After pouring, the import and export of the orifice will be covered with thermal insulation materials for insulation. When the dam body is used for water storage and diversion, it is necessary to remove the heat preservation quilt. At this time, the lower temperature water will cause a effect called ‘cold shock’ on the surface concrete of the bottom orifices, in addition, under the influence of a combination of external factors such as air and water temperatures, a large temperature gradient will appear on the surface of the concrete, which will easily lead to temperature cracks. In this paper, external environment temperature, water temperature, real-time concrete surface heat exchange coefficient and the effect of solar radiation fever in the high temperature season are considered in the temperature field simulation calculation of single bottom orifice during outflowing. The calculation result indicates the simulation model is highly accurate, and the inaccuracy between the calculated and the measured temperature is within 1 °C, which provides theoretical reference for deep orifices and surface orifices in water discharge, temperature control and crack prevention.
