Abstract:Business English Writing is a compulsory course for English majors in Beijing Wuzi University. It is a practical course for students to internalize what they have learned in other Business Reading courses and turn it into business English articles. So cooperative learning method is introduced in this course to help students smoothly finish the writing process. Also, cooperative learning can help students to be more actively involved in learning, increase their learning motivation, improve their self-learning and creative thinking ability, so it has been applied broadly in English Teaching. However, there is seldom study that has been done on Business English Writing from the perspective of action research. This action research focused on how to apply cooperative learning in Business English Writing courses by comparing the learning results (ideas of the composition and length of the composition) of two classes, one is implemented with cooperative learning while the other is not. The comparison revealed that students were positive to cooperative learning and obtained more writing skills by learning in cooperative groups. In the last part, this paper summarized advantages and limitations of the experiment, and provided suggestions on how to improve cooperative learning in Business English Writing course to have a better learning outcome.

Action Research on the Effect of Formative Assessment on the Oral Presentation of Business English Majors

Abstract:Formative assessment, as a developmental assessment, is widely used in teaching activities. Through four rounds of action research, the author conducts empirical research by means of questionnaires, interviews, scale, and other ways. Through the form of teacher intervention in the classroom, the author explores the impact of formative assessment on the oral presentation of core competence of Business English Majors (language expression, public speech, critical thinking, business knowledge, and information technology) by a variety of formative assessment methods such as self-assessment, peer-assessment, teacher assessment, and online learning growth portfolio to see whether the training can work, and which dimension has been improved the most. The author finds that the student’s performance has significantly improved in all five dimensions.

Abstract:This paper begins by outlining the history of action research before arguing about the workability of action research in China’s foreign language teaching and research. It reveals the challenges that front-line teachers in China face, such as high research pressure, heavy teaching tasks, a lack of research guidelines, and insufficient teamwork, based on a survey of 273 foreign language teachers in colleges and universities from 24 provinces (/autonomous regions/municipalities directly under the central government) in China. After that, 37 papers published in CSSCI publications about foreign language teaching between 1994 and 2018 are reviewed, and recommendations for future action research in China are offered. Finally, the action-research model of “classroom-oriented research and research-based classroom teaching” is proposed as an achievable research framework for front-line teachers, incorporating information technology, multimodal teaching materials, and curriculum and course reforms under the guidelines of pedagogy, psychology, and linguistics.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to explore the application and effect of action research in college English listening teaching. By conducting an action study from finding problems, reconfirming problems, designing action plans, final actions to reflection, with a hybrid approach to research design, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, the study employed questionnaire survey and interview to understand students' satisfaction with listening teaching and the existing problems, namely, the inappropriateness of listening task design, the limits of vocabulary, the lack of listening skills and strategies. Subsequently, a series of solutions are proposed and applied into actions. Teachers adjusted their teaching strategies according to the initial feedback and implemented a series of innovative teaching activities, such as group discussion, role playing, simulate real situations, interactive listening games, and the use of multimedia materials. During the implementation process, researchers regularly collect feedback from students and analyze the data together with teachers to further optimize teaching methods. The results show that action research not only improves students' listening skills and learning motivation, but also enhances their critical thinking and autonomous learning ability. In addition, the teaching practice of teachers has been significantly improved.

Abstract:This study investigates the influences of action research on primary school English instruction from five dimensions in the classroom, viz., types of questions, language errors, gestures, facial expressions, and interpersonal distance. Four English teachers' 9 real classroom teaching videos before and after action research are collected and annotated by using ELAN software. The results show that primary school English teachers in Chinese rural areas prefer closed questions to open questions; They make some language errors; Deictic gestures are the most common gestures used, while metaphoric gestures, beat gestures and iconic gestures are rare; Teachers have the same preference for three types of facial expressions, and teachers' serious expressions accounts for most of the time; They seldom keep an intimate distance or personal distance from their students. Second, Action research is effective to motivate teachers in rural areas, who make great progress in all five dimensions after AR: more open questions are asked; pragmatic errors and grammatical errors are reduced; deictic gestures increase; apathetic decrease, and more intimate distance is exhibited in the interpersonal distance dimension. Third, teacher's English teaching competence is partly transferrable to her future professional development, and this is also the long-lasting effect of AR.

Abstract:The present study attempts to promote reformation in the setting of Chinese EFL teaching.It discusses and analyzes some major issues concerning language teaching and big-class problems in terms of quality teaching and digital writing.By stressing an ecological balance between grand discussion(i.e.,text role in globalization) and technical delicacy(i.e.,technical role in language teaching),this study suggests that the English system helps promote cost-reduced quality teaching in EFL/ESL English writing at the college level of training.There are four parts in this paper: Introduction,Problem Identification,Digital Writing,and Prospect.Specifically,we present some encouraging reformation results obtained via the use of the Experience Writing System in real teaching context.Based on the effects gained from practical teaching activities,we conclude that a healthier understanding of quality teaching cannot ignore the close relationship between language teaching and educational technology.

Abstract:As is known to all, with the further development of economic globalization, foreign language teaching plays an increasingly important role in China's education.In recent years, as a result of China's new curriculum reform, researchers continue to explore the comprehensive learning methods, many new teaching methods with the times came into being.This paper mainly wants to discuss whether Task-based Approach really has practically helped for English writing, whether it can mobilize students' enthusiasm for writing, whether it pays attention to the cultivation of students' comprehensive quality, and how to carry out Task-based Approach better and more smoothly in middle schools.In order to better ensure the authenticity of this paper, the author of the paper will use questionnaire survey and experimental methods to demonstrate.Through the research, the author of the paper understands that Task-Based Approach is developed on the basis of communicative teaching method, and its practical application in English classroom provides a good example for us.However, in the past, China's English teaching did not pay attention to the cultivation of students' comprehensive ability, but only paid attention to a certain aspect of English learning, and paid less attention to writing. Students are afraid to write English compositions, lack of practical writing materials, unable to mobilize the knowledge learned, write out vividly.After the study of Task-based Approach, students can improve their writing ability and stimulate their interest in writing to some extent.After this study, the author of the paper hopes to give some ideas and inspiration to teachers who want to use Task-based Approach in writing teaching in the future. At the same time, in view of the shortcomings in the research, it is hoped that teachers can continue to reflect and summarize, and continue to conduct in-depth research.

Abstract:Abstract This study examined the roles of action research in the professional development of Chinese language teachers. Participants were a group of Chinese teachers enrolled in a teacher training course. In light of theories and research, participants were guided to reflect on their own teaching beliefs and practice and design a research project about their own teaching. Using a descriptive-explorative design, this study elicited data from multiple sources, including students’ pre-course survey, professional journals, reflective essays, project reports, group interviews, email exchanges with the instructor, and instructor’s field notes. Three categories emerged from the data analysis that reflected students’ gains from the process: a broader conception of research on language teaching and learning, a more sophisticated understanding of foreign language teaching in general and their own teaching in particular, and a learning process of how to be a teacher-researcher. Contributing and impeding factors are discussed and values of teacher research are suggested.

Abstract:Over the past decades,the quality of English teaching has greatly been enhanced in China.This is especially true for college English.Quality teaching in English writing has,however,remained a mission not completed yet.The pres-ent study looks at problems in this respect and at-tempts to provide solutions.A briefintroduction is given in the first part.The ensuing part identifies major problems existing in the teaching of writing.Community of practice is adopted in the third part as a theoretic framework to look at relevant issues.Based on our teaching practice,an innovative ap-proach is introduced in the fourth part.In the clos-ing part,an ecological perspective is recapitulated to encourage a healthier combination between humanistic concern and technological delicacy in more writing classrooms.

Abstract:Abstract The traditional teaching model of English linguistics is not suitable for the current English major in China. Teachers should create the suitable ones in their context. Under the guidance of action research, an empirical study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of flipped classroom model in teaching English linguistics with a view to constructing the model based on Mosoteach Management System and exploring efficient teaching strategies. Findings demonstrate that flipped classroom model helps promote students’ learning abilities and comprehensive quality, and improve teaching effects as well. Modern teaching methods characterized by information technology puts forward a new requirement for teachers’ growth in professional quality.

Abstract:The present paper takes a problematizational perspective and looks at questions raised by language instructors at two national conferences for innovative writing in China.In relation to these questions,theoretical discussions and practical solutions are given by turning to a new teaching framework—"Experience English Writing".This paper consists of five parts.In the first part,the background information concerning this study is introduced.Then a typological treatment of the questions collected is made,forming a question-driven database for detailed analysis.In the third part,these questions are closely examined at two levels of analyses,theoretical and practical.To enhance the relevance of discussion,a case study for innovative teaching is provided in the fourth part.Closing remarks are given in the fifth part,which further elaborates the challenging situation language instructors are currently facing in the teaching of English writing.

Abstract:The present study aimed at investigating the effects of learning lexical chunks on the writing performance of EFL Chinese learners of Grade three students in Middle school, and at the same time taking into consideration the examining participants’ use of lexical chunks and their knowledge of them. After two rounds of action research, through questionnaire, test, interview and classroom observation data analysis, the author found that: 1. The average writing score of students increased by 1.67 points, with an obvious improvement effect. Second, students' writing confidence, chunk writing awareness and writing methods have also been greatly improved. 3. The number of language chunks written by students increased on the second test, but decreased on the third test. According to the author's interview on students' familiarity with writing topics, students think that familiar writing topics make them more able to express their ideas.

Abstract:This paper first presents in rather detail the project of a survey on the problems existing in English writing.The data are collected from 537 Chinese students of three colleges.The survey was conducted following Hasan's theory of Generic Structure Potential.The result confirms our hypothesis that Chinese college students do not have strong genre awareness apart from having problems in lexis,grammar and other aspects.This strengthens our belief that students need to start writing at the discourse level and to be exposed to more practical genres,and that both teachers and students need particularly to build up genre awareness.
