Abstract:This paper begins by outlining the history of action research before arguing about the workability of action research in China’s foreign language teaching and research. It reveals the challenges that front-line teachers in China face, such as high research pressure, heavy teaching tasks, a lack of research guidelines, and insufficient teamwork, based on a survey of 273 foreign language teachers in colleges and universities from 24 provinces (/autonomous regions/municipalities directly under the central government) in China. After that, 37 papers published in CSSCI publications about foreign language teaching between 1994 and 2018 are reviewed, and recommendations for future action research in China are offered. Finally, the action-research model of “classroom-oriented research and research-based classroom teaching” is proposed as an achievable research framework for front-line teachers, incorporating information technology, multimodal teaching materials, and curriculum and course reforms under the guidelines of pedagogy, psychology, and linguistics.
The Application of Action Research in College English Listening Teaching

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to explore the application and effect of action research in college English listening teaching. By conducting an action study from finding problems, reconfirming problems, designing action plans, final actions to reflection, with a hybrid approach to research design, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, the study employed questionnaire survey and interview to understand students' satisfaction with listening teaching and the existing problems, namely, the inappropriateness of listening task design, the limits of vocabulary, the lack of listening skills and strategies. Subsequently, a series of solutions are proposed and applied into actions. Teachers adjusted their teaching strategies according to the initial feedback and implemented a series of innovative teaching activities, such as group discussion, role playing, simulate real situations, interactive listening games, and the use of multimedia materials. During the implementation process, researchers regularly collect feedback from students and analyze the data together with teachers to further optimize teaching methods. The results show that action research not only improves students' listening skills and learning motivation, but also enhances their critical thinking and autonomous learning ability. In addition, the teaching practice of teachers has been significantly improved.

Abstract:Abstract This study examined the roles of action research in the professional development of Chinese language teachers. Participants were a group of Chinese teachers enrolled in a teacher training course. In light of theories and research, participants were guided to reflect on their own teaching beliefs and practice and design a research project about their own teaching. Using a descriptive-explorative design, this study elicited data from multiple sources, including students’ pre-course survey, professional journals, reflective essays, project reports, group interviews, email exchanges with the instructor, and instructor’s field notes. Three categories emerged from the data analysis that reflected students’ gains from the process: a broader conception of research on language teaching and learning, a more sophisticated understanding of foreign language teaching in general and their own teaching in particular, and a learning process of how to be a teacher-researcher. Contributing and impeding factors are discussed and values of teacher research are suggested.

Abstract:This study investigates the influences of action research on primary school English instruction from five dimensions in the classroom, viz., types of questions, language errors, gestures, facial expressions, and interpersonal distance. Four English teachers' 9 real classroom teaching videos before and after action research are collected and annotated by using ELAN software. The results show that primary school English teachers in Chinese rural areas prefer closed questions to open questions; They make some language errors; Deictic gestures are the most common gestures used, while metaphoric gestures, beat gestures and iconic gestures are rare; Teachers have the same preference for three types of facial expressions, and teachers' serious expressions accounts for most of the time; They seldom keep an intimate distance or personal distance from their students. Second, Action research is effective to motivate teachers in rural areas, who make great progress in all five dimensions after AR: more open questions are asked; pragmatic errors and grammatical errors are reduced; deictic gestures increase; apathetic decrease, and more intimate distance is exhibited in the interpersonal distance dimension. Third, teacher's English teaching competence is partly transferrable to her future professional development, and this is also the long-lasting effect of AR.

Abstract:Abstract The traditional teaching model of English linguistics is not suitable for the current English major in China. Teachers should create the suitable ones in their context. Under the guidance of action research, an empirical study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of flipped classroom model in teaching English linguistics with a view to constructing the model based on Mosoteach Management System and exploring efficient teaching strategies. Findings demonstrate that flipped classroom model helps promote students’ learning abilities and comprehensive quality, and improve teaching effects as well. Modern teaching methods characterized by information technology puts forward a new requirement for teachers’ growth in professional quality.

Abstract:This paper examines the role that action research – including both academic studies and action research undertaken by teachers for the purposes of professional development – might play in helping to close the existing gap between the pedagogical implications of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) research and the practical implementation of an ELF-oriented approach in the classroom. It is argued that the purposes and characteristic features of action research as a research methodology are particularly relevant and fitting to address the kinds of questions relating to pedagogy which remain at this stage of ELF research. To support this thesis, the heart of the paper presents findings from an applied linguistic study investigating the implementation of an ELF-oriented approach in a university-level pilot course in order to illustrate the kinds of insights which classroom-based action research studies can provide. Finally, the concluding section reflects on the role of action research as a part of teachers' professional development, the potential contributions which such research might make to ELF research and the need for the wider ELF research community to pay more attention to findings from action research undertaken as part of teacher education programs.
The construction of action syllabus for Teaching Chinese as Second Language from the prospective of Interactional Linguistics

Abstract:Action is one of the cores of Interactional Linguistics and an important part of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. This paper introduces the concept of action and its characteristics and then constructs the action syllabus based on the analysis of syllabuses before. Action is sparsely mentioned in the syllabuses before, and there are some problems, such as loose classification, confusion between scene and actions, intertwined at different levels. Actions which are applied in teaching can be divided into wide actions and narrow actions combined with the researches of Interactional Linguistics. Wide actions include five types: inquiring, request, assessment, informing and suggestion, and each wide action consists of several narrow actions. Narrow actions also include many specific actions such as greeting, thanking and so on. This paper explains wide actions in details and analyses the corresponding relationship between wide actions and different teaching levels and scenes. Finally, this paper gives an example of the application of action syllabus and the researches of Interactional Linguistics to oral Chinese teaching and shows the application value of Interactional Linguistics.

Abstract:The application of questioning as a teaching tool has always been considered as a main part of the teaching process. Based on the viewpoint of several researchers, a survey was conducted on the application of different questioning strategies by Chinese and foreign EFL teachers in a middle school, in order to determine their effects on students’ language learning output and propose measures to optimize Chinese teachers’ questioning strategies for improving students’ learning efficiency. This research provides preliminary results based on the data collected from the video recordings of class sessions, a questionnaire, and an interview. According to the analysis, the questioning strategies differ between Chinese and foreign EFL teachers in many aspects, such as in information seeking, offering, modification, adjustment, feedback, and so forth.

Abstract:This article reports a nationwide investigation on the attitude of college English teachers towards research.Questionnaires and interviews were employed to collect data from 747 teachers regarding their research achievements,understanding of relationship between teaching and research,analysis of factors standing in the way of professional development,academic participation,and self planning.The results show that the teachers generally believe it is unfair for the teachers different disciplines to have unified requirements because of the diversity nature different disciplines.They think that teaching and research are complementary but also contradictory to some extent.The authors analyzed the teachers' views using the framework of Higher Education Models,and proposed a strategy of cooperation among teachers,Teacher Development Department,and Scientific Research Development Department.It is an investigation that surveyed a large sample after a new round of educational reform,the results of which will have some implications for decision makers in China.

Abstract:In recent years, the English teaching reform in higher vocational colleges in China has gradually integrated heuristic teaching methods. However, a notable issue has emerged: students’ deficiency in critical thinking skills. This study aims to enhance the critical thinking skills of higher vocational students in China through action research. The research includes four cycles of teaching practice to improve students’ critical thinking ability in terms of analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and self-adjustment. Through the task design, the researcher promotes students’ in-depth thinking and critical analysis in cross-cultural English classes. It was found that vocational students made noticeable progress in the 16-week training process, as reflected by the changes in interpretation and analysis abilities and attitudes towards culture. These results provide valuable experience and enlightenment for English teaching in higher vocational colleges and emphasise the importance of cultivating students’ critical thinking ability to promote their development in academic and professional fields.

Abstract:Action research (AR) has become increasingly common in applied linguistics studies as an empirical method that may be extended to other research studies and higher education. Action research consists of taking action and analyzing how it affects student learning. Though there are two components namely ‘action’ and ‘research’ at the heart of action research, classroom teachers often prioritize action over research. The goal of ‘action’ in action research is to bring about positive change, and improvement in the participants’ social situation. Through self-reflection, analysis, methodical planning, and execution, action research fosters classroom transformation through improving teaching-learning practices. Action research is a qualitative, disciplined method of inquiry carried out by and for individuals who are carrying out the action. Action research is primarily used to support the "actor" in enhancing and/or modifying his or her activities. This paper discusses the fundamental philosophical presuppositions, paradigms, history, and theoretical bases of action research. The paper also describes the primary methodologies and techniques and tools used in action research. In addition, the paper presents an action research template which can be used by English teachers for classroom purposes.

Abstract:Abstract Since the 1960s, research on Chinese language teaching and learning has developed gradually, so it is worthwhile to synthesize the research results and examine trends and changes. A literature review shows that research has been done to synthesize research findings regarding Chinese language acquisition, but no review of the research studies have been done examining Chinese language pedagogy. This study investigates the research trends in Chinese language pedagogy in the U.S. by analyzing 122 empirical studies published in 25 peer-reviewed journals. These articles were identified through an exhaustive search using multiple databases and methods. The articles were cross analyzed in terms of research topics, language learning settings, methodological approaches, theoretical perspectives, and types of learners that were studied. The analysis found that the topics studied in pedagogical research have become increasingly diversified, and that many of the studies used SLA theories, cognitive theories, and multimedia theories as support for their research designs. Almost half of the studies used technology as part of their pedagogical method. The data also revealed that more research was done with beginning-level learners than advanced learners, and that most of the studies used qualitative data. Analysis of the data highlights the need for more research using Action Research and Design-Based Research methods and reveals a need for all future research to use theoretical support for the research designs. This article concludes by suggesting aspects of Chinese pedagogy that could benefit from further research.
A Corpus-based Study: A Comparison between China and Abroad in Current Hot Topics of English Language Teaching within Abstracts of TESOL Conventions

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore the current hot topics of English language teaching (ELT) between China and abroad using a corpus-based approach, with the research data taken from key words of 2775 abstracts within the 2021-2022 program books of International TESOL conferences and TESOL China assembly as four corpora, two of China and abroad in 2021 as well as two in 2022. It attempted to give significant proposals for future ELT research in China. A mixed methodology of (Quantitative +qualitative) was employed, one of which was AntConc software, for quantitative analysis on the data of high-frequency key words coded from each corpus. A qualitative analysis was subsequently conducted to analyze the potential reasons of major differences lie in Chinese and foreign hot topics of ELT. The study found major differences in terms of four aspects of hot topics of ELT between China and abroad: 1). Chinese academics mostly employed presentation as the primary teaching method, whereas foreign countries used a different variety of teaching methods, including online teaching tools, amount of teaching activities; 2). China stressed students’ summary writing and public speaking skills when it came to the aspect of student cultivation. On the other hand, foreign nations helped students improve their academic and reflective writing skills; 3). In China, test and peer assessment were the crucial methods of teaching evaluation, while formative assessment was used as the pivotal role in foreign countries; 4). China focused on the construction of teachers' professional identities and strategy training in teacher development. Yet, foreign countries concentrated on teachers' professional development. Pedagogical implications are that future ELT research in China needs to draw on overseas experience for drilling in four aspects: teaching methods, student cultivation, teaching evaluation and teacher development.

Abstract:This article analyzes research in second/foreign language teaching and learning conducted in Taiwan over the period 2004–2009. Representative articles published in local refereed journals and conference proceedings – not readily accessible outside Taiwan – are reviewed to reflect current trends in English teaching and learning. The main themes discussed include English-in-education policy and curriculum, research on English-skills development, and assessment. The analysis presented here highlights the fact that research in Taiwan not only follows international trends but also satisfies specific needs in local sociolinguistic contexts. Additionally, this paper sheds light on why the international readership of this locally conducted research remains very limited, and concludes by outlining the challenges that researchers face and the gradually shifting status of English in Taiwan in this increasingly globalized world.

Abstract:Action research shifts the paradigm of contemporary educational reform by emphasizing inquiry and placing teachers at the center of research-into-practice. By situating teachers as learners, action research offers a systematic and intentional approach to changing teaching. When working as part of a community of practice, action researchers engage in sustained professional learning activities. They explore issues of everyday practice and work to bring about change. This review highlights action research studies from across four subject areas—English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies—and is premised on the notion that changing teaching practice is connected to understanding how teachers learn. Specifically, it focuses on understanding changes in teacher pedagogical content knowledge, disciplinary inquiry, and critical pedagogy through action research. Findings suggest that we must go beyond current conceptualizations of teacher learning as process-product, cognitive, and situative to view teaching as inquiry. Successful efforts to change practice through action research have demonstrated the value of engaging teachers as active participants in education research. At the same time, the field must overcome barriers including the marginalization of action research, logistical issues associated with conducting action research, and the dissemination of findings.

Abstract:Abstract The traditional English teaching is mainly dominated by the teacher and instilled in teaching. The students trained by this teaching mode have a low ability to acquire knowledge, and they often become dumb when they communicate with each other. With the continuous development of society, big data has been applied to all aspects of our life, constantly changing our existing education mode. Based on this, this paper establishes the teaching platform of English applied linguistics, and combines the teaching of English Applied Linguistics with big data in combination with the current teaching situation of English applied linguistics. In this paper, the students of grade 2020 are used as the control group, and the network teaching platform based on big data is used for teaching. The control group is the students of grade 2019, and the traditional teaching mode is used for teaching. More than 90% of the students’ oral ability can be improved by more than 90% of the students’ oral English in 2020.
