Abstract:The traditional teaching approach has long been concerned with imparting know!edge, and many college teachers still opt for this method in their practice In English class teachers choose to emphasize ma the language points, ignoring that English lan- guage mainly functions as a tool of communication. On the other hand, for students the purpose of learning English is to pass the examination. This traditional approach fails to cultivate students＂ communicative ability in English . In recent years, however, the general shift from a knowledge-based education to an ability-oriented one makes it an imperative to reform the traditional teaching methods. As a new kind of teaching theory and teaching act!vity, task-based approach（TBA） has been introduced and applieded by English teachers in China, especially those engaged in English teaching in higher vocational colleges.
Applying vocational education and training pedagogy in business English courses for China's English major undergraduates

Abstract:Purpose In light of university business English pedagogical innovation, this study reports an empirical study with 66 English major participants. Design/methodology/approach The study uses online survey and participant observation to investigate their practice-oriented motivation and needs, the perceptions of using vocational education and training pedagogy in business English teaching and the learning outcomes in a Chinese university context. Findings The study found participants with motivations to learn business and trade knowledge, develop practice-oriented abilities and the preferences of learning flexibly and autonomously. For the perceptions of using vocational education and training pedagogy, simulations of meetings and negotiations were recommended and the job-based competency development model was useful. Workplace simulation was also particularly suggested to bridge the gap between classroom and workplace. For learning outcomes, writing practices and workplace simulation were considered particularly useful. The learning gains were found in international trade correspondence writing. While the intention of continuing learning business English correspondence writing was identified, more opportunities should be created for more practice-oriented activities, such as internship or corporate visit. Originality/value Informed by vocational education and training theory, the study has important pedagogical, theoretical and policy implications for business English teaching in both China and worldwide contexts.

Abstract:In the late 1980s, the Ministry of Education advocated “designing certain language activities aimed at completing tasks” in professional English teaching. The revised outline in 2000 also stipulated that “more task centered and diverse teaching activities should be carried out”. In 2001, the Ministry of Education emphasized that middle school English instruction should advocate a “task-based teaching method”. As a task-centered approach to English teaching, Task-based Language Teaching has been studied and implemented by many Chinese and foreign researchers and teachers. While it is acknowledged that Task-based Language Teaching brings benefits to students and instruction, especially compared to traditional language teaching, its application to different types of real-world classroom lessons has exposed some problems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the theoretical basis, relevant information about tasks, previous research, advantages, problems, procedures and suggestions for the implementation of Task-based Language teaching, and to express some of personal opinions to some extent.

Abstract:Business English writing is a compulsory skill to be mastered by Business English major students but there is little progress in acquiring writing skills due to unattractive and ineffective teaching methods. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of using the blended learning mode of task collaborative learning in improving Business English writing skills of students in China. The sample of the study consisted of 80 second year Chinese Business English students from Guangdong Polytechnic Science and Technology; two business English lecturers also participated in this study. All the students were of the same age group with similar results in their first-year English Language examination. Both the Experimental Group and Control groups had 40 students each and they were chosen as intact-groups. The Experimental Group was taught using the blended learning mode of task collaborative learning and the Control Group was taught using the conventional method over a period of eight weeks. The quantitative data were analyzed using the SPSS Program for Windows Version 25, in which ANCOVA test were applied for the inferential statistics. The findings from the quantitative data analyses indicated that the Experimental Group outperformed the Control Group in their overall scores in writing, focusing on topic, supporting details, coherence and cohesion, grammar and vocabulary. Also, students improved their writing skills through collaborative leaning. As such, this study has crucial pedagogical implications as it suggests that the blended learning mode of task collaborative learning can be used as an alternative method in China to improve students’ Business English writing skills.

Abstract:To better meet the needs of economic restructuring and industrial development in China, educators in vocational colleges have to find new approaches to narrow the gaps between the updated requirements from the employers for business English majors and the vocational college education reality. Under this circumstance, a tentative study was carried out with the aids of multimedia to help the educators remove obstacles blocking achieving their educational aim, which is cultivating the graduates who are qualified for the social requirement. This study mainly discussed how effective the multimedia networks can help the business English majors in vocational colleges to enrich their work experience and enhance their practical English ability, computer skills, communication skills, and cooperation skills comprehensively. It aimed at exploring the ways of helping the business English majors in vocational colleges to gain work experience and improve their practical English skills, computer skills, communication skills, and cooperation skills with the aid of multimedia networks. An experimental teaching program was designed under the guidelines of a task-based teaching approach and constructive learning theory. The program includes four teaching models, which are in-class learning and field preparation, mock practice, in-field learning and field education, and learning reflection. All learning and field practices are delivered online facilitated by multimedia networks. One hundred and forty sophomores majoring in business English are selected as participants of the program. Data of students’ confidence in all five monitored essential abilities are collected before and after the learning procedure through questionnaires, and students’ feedbacks are collected through interviews. The statistical results show that multimedia networks can help students improve their overall competence, especially in gaining work experience and practical English skills. Moreover, adopting multimedia networks in teaching can provide more internship opportunities, enrich teaching scenarios, and prolong net teaching hours, which forms a preferred learning environment and provides better learning outcomes. It could also be used to assist communication and cooperation trainings.

Abstract:This article suggests ways in which materials writers can incorporate key characteristics of workplace communication into the design of tasks for Business English courses for adult learners. These suggestions are based on findings from a multifaceted study of communication in Hong Kong’s globalized business world, which includes ‘week-in-the-life’ case studies of senior professionals. These findings point to the need for a simulation-based approach in which students with clearly defined and differentiated roles work quickly and collaboratively to investigate and resolve problems. They work towards this objective by processing and producing interdependent text types, such as emails and reports, and by participating in speech events, such as meetings and telephone conversations, that are stimulated by English language texts. In essence, this approach represents the ‘strong’ version of task-based language teaching and thus contrasts with the exercise-based approach found in many general-purpose Business English textbooks.

Abstract:Despite the increasing need to develop students' intercultural competence in China, the relationship between the approaches used to teach the English language and the cultivation of students' intercultural competence remains largely under-researched. Based on Byram's intercultural model and the intercultural language teaching framework, using action research we developed and implemented new teaching approaches to cultivate intercultural competence among students using a quasi-experimental design that combined qualitative and quantitative methods. Two classes of undergraduate students majoring in Business English were randomly selected, with one being assigned as the treatment group (n = 33) and the other as the control group (n = 32). The primary data consisted of questionnaires, journals, and interviews. After participating in a three-month intercultural speaking course where the treatment group students were guided through an intercultural learning process of noticing, comparing, and reflecting, findings revealed that they developed intercultural competence regarding their attitudes, knowledge, skills, and awareness. Implications for facilitating students' intercultural competence are discussed.

Abstract:This study reports an empirical case study about using interdisciplinary approach in business English courses with 41 English majors in the Chinese university context. The methodologies are two‐stage surveys, teacher reflection and participant observation. The results show that participants most preferred using specialist vocabulary and cross‐cultural business communication as learning activities in using interdisciplinary approach. The challenges and difficulties in interdisciplinary learning included lack of professional vocabulary, business or interdisciplinary knowledge, business thinking skills and inadequate language skills. A majority of the participants perceived the interdisciplinary approach as effective, as they had improvements in business language, knowledge, communication and English ability. For improving and refining the interdisciplinary approach, participants suggested more practical and detailed business knowledge, practice‐based activities, oral simulation and role‐play activities, more detailed guidance and feedback in the writing tasks, more business cases with interesting videos, increasing Chinese native language explanation and producing a business English language corpus.

Abstract:This paper reviews the practices in the teaching of Business English in China over the past 50years and two perspectives on Business English that have been influential in conceptualizing a new approach to curriculum design. The review demonstrates that there has been an evolution from intuition-led practices to content-based teaching, and to more research-based practices. Two perspectives, ESP and business discourse studies, have both contributed insights into Business English and have led us to a working definition of Business English. On the basis of this new conceptualization, the paper proposes a tripartite curriculum for teaching Business English, which aims to cultivate business expertise rather than just teaching language skills and discrete knowledge of the subject areas as is often promoted in the ESP literature.

Abstract:In the face of high-quality development requirements and changes in population structure, China's demand for highly skilled personnel is stronger. The professional setting of some vocational education is disjointed with the social needs, among which, the business English major in higher vocational colleges has prominent problems, the professional structure is not reasonable, and the adaptability is not strong, which restricts the economic and social development. This paper takes the business English major of Guangzhou Huanan Business College as an example, analyzes its current development situation and dilemma, and puts forward several strategies to enhance the adaptability of higher vocational education majors. This paper mainly adopts literature research, investigation method, case study, etc. By clarifying the orientation of “business trade plus English” majors, exploring the “three+two-stages” joint training mode, giving full play to the role of enterprise subjects as well as the dual subjects of schools and enterprises jointly educated people, actively expanding the cross-disciplinary advantages, creating major highlights, constructing the “four-double” foreign language business trade plus 321 talent mode, it constantly improves the adaptability of business English majors in higher vocational colleges, making the business English major better.

Abstract:Speaking is an essential aspect of English learning. It reflects the student’s ability to express and comprehensively use the language. In the 21st century, international exchanges have become increasingly frequent. Therefore, English is more important as a tool of international communication. Despite this, under the long-term pressure of examinations, English teaching in our country only focuses on reading, writing, and other content closely related to testing scores, while oral English teaching is easily neglected. Even in the classrooms where oral English teaching is implemented, the teaching activities and methods are relatively monotonous and out of touch with the actual situation, resulting in students’ low enthusiasm for oral English and unwillingness to speak English. In order to solve this problem, this paper studies an effective oral English teaching method --- Task-Based Language Learning (TBLT). This teaching method abandons the disadvantages of the traditional oral English teaching method and better improves students’ oral English ability. TBLT is a teaching method that gradually emerged and developed in the 1980s. In language teaching, TBLT requires language teaching based on tasks, and students should learn the language while completing the tasks. TBLT allows students to use English to complete various actual tasks related to life, study, and work, making classroom teaching real and task-oriented and cultivating students’ ability to use English in practice.

Abstract:Abstract With the continuous development of science, the company’s concept of selecting talents has also undergone tremendous changes. Higher vocational education is the main development goal of increasing the employment rate of students. Therefore, it can be said that the business English major in higher vocational education is a very practical major. Abstract:With the progression of globalization and vocational education, English teaching in higher vocational colleges faces new challenges and opportunities. Practical teaching strategies are increasingly emphasized in higher vocational English education, aiming to enhance students’ English application skills and professional qualities through real-life scenarios and task-oriented learning. This paper discusses the practical teaching strategies in higher vocational English education, from theoretical foundations and current status analysis to specific strategy design and application, systematically analyzing the concept, core elements, and effects of practical teaching. Research shows that practical teaching strategies effectively improve students’ English application abilities and learning motivation, yet challenges remain in implementation. Future efforts should focus on optimizing teaching strategies and refining assessment mechanisms to promote the sustainable development of higher vocational English education.
