Abstract:Homogeneous and rapid mixing in microfluidic devices have always been the premise requirement due to its integration with bioengineering and chemical experiments. In this work, a novel passive micromixer with modified asymmetric lateral wall structures is designed. The numerical simulation is carried out at the Reynolds number ranging from 0.1 to 100 for the novel microchannel and the ordinary S-shaped microchannel. The results indicate that, compared with the S-shaped micromixer, the novel structure exhibits superior mixing performance, which can be attributed to the increasing inertial effect and formation of secondary flow. The simulation results suggest that the novel micromixer developed here will achieve an efficient mixing performance.

Abstract:To enhance fluid mixing in microfluidic system,a novel three-dimensional static micromixer was designed based on laminar flow mixing principle.With the staggered oriented ridges arranged periodically in the microchannel,the transverse components of flow were generated under a steady axial pressure gradient to stir the fluid and effectively enhance mixing in the microchannel.The distribution of velocity field in the static micromixers was investigated with the computational fluid dynamics method,and the mixing principle in the micromixer was analyzed.The performances of micromixers were measured through Rhodamine dye and deionized water mixing experiment,and the relationships of the mixing degree with the structural parameters and the Reynolds number were quantitatively investigated.Experimental results show that the staggered oriented ridges Ⅱ(SOR-Ⅱ) micromixer can achieve good mixing in low and high Reynolds number,while the staggered oriented ridges Ⅰ(SOR-Ⅰ) micromixer can achieve good mixing only in high Reynolds number.
Research on Staggered Oriented Ridges Static Micromixers

Abstract:Two static micromixers (SOR-I and SOR-II) were designed and fabricated based on glass substrates. The two micromixers with staggered oriented ridges generate the transverse components of flow in microchannels and create chaos, which urge the reduction of mixing length. The computational fluid dynamics method was used to analyze the flow in the micromixers. Red dye mixing experiments were carried out to visualize the development of mixing process and the performance in SOR-I and SOR-II. The results show that staggered oriented ridges in microchannels can induce stirring and achieve a good mixing effect. The performance of the SOR-II micromixer is more effective than that of the SOR-I micromixer.

Abstract:As one of the hot spots in the field of microfluidic chip research, micromixers have been widely used in chemistry, biology, and medicine due to their small size, fast response time, and low reagent consumption. However, at low Reynolds numbers, the fluid motion relies mainly on the diffusive motion of molecules under laminar flow conditions. The detrimental effect of laminar flow leads to difficulties in achieving rapid and efficient mixing of fluids in microchannels. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance fluid mixing by employing some external means. In this paper, the classification and mixing principles of passive (T-type, Y-type, obstructed, serpentine, three-dimensional) and active (acoustic, electric, pressure, thermal, magnetic field) micromixers are reviewed based on the presence or absence of external forces in the micromixers, and some experiments and applications of each type of micromixer are briefly discussed. Finally, the future development trends of micromixers are summarized.

Abstract:In recent years many activities have been focused on the microchemical engineering process for the minimization of chemical engineering.The present work is spent doing development and research on micromixers and their performance.The application prospect of the micromixers in the chemical reaction,separation process and heat transfer is discussed.The advantages of higher efficiency,less contact time,low energy consumption,easy operation and control,simple equipment and better safety is concluded,while the disadvantages lie in the higher processing cost,low capacity and clean system requirement are analyzed.It is pointed out that to develop higher and newer microprocessing techniques and to develop micromixers capable of handling solid materials with a big production capacity and self-cleaning is in urgent need.

Abstract:Micromixers are characterized based on characteristics such as excellent mixing efficiency, low reagent cost and flexible controllability compared with conventional reactors in terms of macro size. A variety of designs and applications of micromixers have been proposed. The focus of current reviews is restricted to micromixer structures. Each type of micromixer has characteristics corresponding to its structure, which determines the suitable application areas. This paper provides an overview connecting micromixer designs and their applications. First, the typical designs and mixing mechanisms of both passive and active micromixers are summarized. Then, application cases of micromixers, including chemical, biological and medical applications, are presented. The characteristics, including the advantages and restrictions of different micromixers, are discussed. Finally, the future perspective of micromixer design is proposed. It is predictable that micromixers will have widespread applications by integrating two or more different mixing methods together. This review would be beneficial to guide the design of micromixers applied for specific purposes.

Abstract:A new helical micro-mixer was designed.In order to illuminate the mixing efficiency,the diffusion and mixing of the species in the helical micro-mixer were simulatied numerically.The results show that the mixing efficiency is much better than that of in the straight micro-channel and obviously better than that of in the serpentine microchannel because of the layered structure and more contact areas,when the Reynolds number being low.The mixing efficiency is also much better than that of in the straight channel,but no obvious difference from that of in serpentine microchannel when the Reynolds number being bigger,because the convection dominates the flow.

Abstract:Microfluidic devices have attracted increasing attention in the fields of biomedical diagnostics, food safety control, environmental protection, and animal epidemic prevention. Micromixing has a considerable impact on the efficiency and sensitivity of microfluidic devices. This work reviews recent advances on the passive and active micromixers for the development of various microfluidic chips. Recently reported active micromixers driven by pressure fields, electrical fields, sound fields, magnetic fields, and thermal fields, etc. and passive micromixers, which owned two-dimensional obstacles, unbalanced collisions, spiral and convergence-divergence structures or three-dimensional lamination and spiral structures, were summarized and discussed. The future trends for micromixers to combine with 3D printing and paper channel were brought forth as well.

Abstract:A novel static micromixer was proposed which was designed according to the characteristics of mixing liquids on the micro-scale.The device was fabricated on glass substrates using wet-etching technique.By applying a steady axial pressure gradient, staggered oriented ridges arranged periodically in the microchannel could generate transverse and three dimensional flow.Chaotic advection was induced in the microchannel,and then stretched and folded material interface and enhanced fluid mixing.The computational fluid dynamics(CFD)method was used to analyze the chaotic mixing in the micromixer.Red dye mixing experiments were carried out to visualize the development of mixing process and the performance in the micromixer.Experimental investigation demonstrated that the design enhanced mixing at both low and high Reynolds number.

Abstract:This paper comprehensively reviews the fundamental principles, innovative designs, and multidisciplinary applications of micromixers. First, it introduces the fundamental principles of fluid mixing in micromixers, including passive and active mixing mechanisms, and the flow characteristics of fluids at the microscale. Subsequently, it focuses on the innovative design of passive micromixers, covering a variety of designs, such as obstacle structures, curved serpentine structures, groove structures, separation and recombination structures, topology optimization structures, and baffle structures, and analyzes the effects of different structures on mixing efficiency and pressure drop. In addition, it also studies the innovative design of active micromixers, including magnetic field assistance, electric field assistance, surface acoustic wave assistance, and thermal effect assistance, and analyzes the effects of different driving modes on mixing efficiency. Finally, it outlines the multidisciplinary applications of micromixers in the fields of biomedicine, chemical analysis, environmental monitoring and control, and new energy. This review aims to provide a comprehensive reference for the research and application of micromixers and promote their application in more fields.
Influence of Structural Parameters on the Performance of an Asymmetric Rhombus Micromixer with Baffles

Abstract:As an important part of lab-on-a-chip and micro-total analysis systems, micromixers have a wide range of applications in biochemical analysis, pharmaceutical preparation and material synthesis. In the work, a novel rhombic separation and recombination micromixer with baffles was presented to further improve the performance of the micromixer and study the effect of multiple structural parameters on mixing. The effects of the rhombic angle, the width ratio of sub-channel and the size and relative positions of baffles on the mixing index were studied numerically at different Reynolds numbers (Re), and the sensitivity of the mixing index to various structures was also investigated. The results showed that the mixing index increased with the subchannel’s width ratio and slowly decreased after reaching the peak value in the range of Re from 0.1 to 60. The maximum mixing index appeared when the width ratio was 6.5. The pressure drops in the microchannel were proportional to the width ratio. The mixing effect can be further improved by adding baffle structure to asymmetric rhombus micromixer, and more baffle quantity and larger baffle height were beneficial to the improvement of the mixing index. The research results can provide reference and new ideas for the structure design of passive micromixers.

Abstract:To improve the fluid mixing effect under micro?nano scale condition, we designed and manufactured a novel micro mixer with three?dimensional step structure based on the polymethyl methacrylate ( PMMA) substrate material. The mixer was composed by one T?shaped inlet channel and six three dimensional step mixing units. The mixer was fabricated by using ultra?precision engraving machine and bonded by miscible organic solvents bonding method at the atmospheric pressure and low temperature conditions. Then, a series of numerical simulations were executed to optimize the step structures and investigate the mixing efficiency. The results showed that, when the Reynolds number was between 0.1 and 5, the concentration variance of mixing chamber cross section was less than 0.1. The reagent was close to the uniform mixture. When the flow rate within 1~20 mL/h, the mixer can achieve on precise regulation of solution pH. The micro machining technology and miscible organic solvents bonding method which were used for fabricate the 3D step micromixer are convenient and cost?effective. The mixer was conducive to the further promotion and application of microfluidic chips.

Abstract:The structure and performance of micromixer with Ytype channel was investigated with computed fluidic dynamics and digital image process.The influences of micromixer such as inlet angle,channel size,and flow velocity of fluid on mixing process,were analyzed.Numerical simulation results reveal that a suitable mixing can be achieved in a microchannel mixer with an inlet angle of 60°,the width of 200 μm,and the in-flow velocity of 0.02 m/s.Numerical simulations were also executed to compare the performance of mixers such as twisted,blocked,and straight channel.The results indicate that the blocked channel mixer has higher quality than its counterparts.According to the numerical results,a new mixer with convex block arrays on two-side walls was adopted,which can accelerate mixing process by squeezing and spreading the streamline of fluids repeatedly.The new mixer was fabricated with MEMS techniques and mixing experiments were carried out to verify the results.Mixing process was also observed.The recorded images were processed and the specific index of fluid mixing along the flow axis was identified according to the constructed standard curve in advance.The identified results validate the performance superiority of the new mixer.In the end,the errors in mixing results were analyzed to find their sources,and some useful advice was also proposed to improve the performance of the experiments.

Abstract:The micro-mixer is usually a pre-treatment device for laboratory chip ( LOC). The study on the influence of mixing mechanism and structure on mixing can provide guides for design and processing of micromixers. In this work, the flow characteristics and mixing mechanism in the square wave micromixer were studied when the channel Re ynolds number was between 0. 1 and 80, and the influence of channel structure on the flow and mixing performance of the fluid in the molecular diffusion dominant phase and the convection diffusion dominant phase was analyzed. The results showed that with the increase of Re in the channel, the fluid mixing transitions from molecular diffusion dominated to convection diffusion dominated stage. The factor that influenced the fluid mixing index during the dominant phase of molecular diffusion was the characteristic diffusion length. The channel width had a greater impact on the mixing index than the channel height. The reduction of the channel width could significantly increase the mixing index in the molecular diffusion phase. At Re = 0. 5, the mixing index was increased by 34. 59% when the channel width was reduced from 400 mu m to 200 mu m. The factor affecting the mixing index in the dominant phase of convection diffusion was the magnitude and intensity of the vortex generated by the centrifugal force at the turn of the microchannel. The vortex of the square wave micromixer with square section had the most fully developed vortex and the best mixing performance. Reducing the size of the square section could increase the vortex strength. At Re = 80, the mixing index of the micromixer with a channel section side length of 200 mu m was 22. 71% higher than the side length of 300 mu m.

Abstract:Mixing in microscale at the low Reynolds number needs much longer mixing distance and time to achieve uniform mixture because it only depends on the diffusion effect.To enhance the fluid mixing in microfluidic system at low Reynolds number quickly and effectively,methanol and methanol with black dye used as working fluids,the microbubble was generated by the pulse voltage loaded on the platinum film and the microbubble on the platinum film brought about periodic expansion and shrinkage thereby generated a pulse pressure.The effect of the chaotic advection mixture performance generated by the lateral disturbance on the fluid mixing in microchannel was discussed.The experiment results indicate that the pulse pressure lateral distur-bance makes the interface of the two fluids induce folding and stretching strongly,which enhances the fluids mixing in the microchannel effectively.The micromixer based on the pulse drive can achieve effective mixing performance in the millimeter mixing length and in the millise-cond time.Furthermore,the higher the pulse frequency loaded on the platinum heating film is,the better the mi-xing performance is.The results provide a new and effective method to solve the mixing problem in microscale at the low Reynolds number.

Abstract:Fluid mixing enhancement is an important topic of microfluidics and microreactor technologies. Though many micromixers based on different mechanisms have been reported so far, most investigations were conducted case by case due to the diversity of applications. For a more comprehensive understanding of the problem, this paper presents a comparative discussion of five different passive micromixers, including a planar spiral mixer, a planar split-and-recombine (SAR) mixer, a 3D serpentine mixer, a 3D SAR mixer, and a 3D mixer with divergent geometries. The involved mixing mechanisms include Dean flow/secondary flow, SAR process and viscous interfacial instabilities. From a geometric perspective, this study compares (i) planar and fully 3D structures, (ii) single channels whose cross section preserve connectedness and interconnected multiple sub-channels, (iii) microchannels with and without divergent structures. Key characteristics of the designs are highlighted. The influence of Reynolds number, fluid viscosity and viscosity ratio are also discussed. As the discussed micromixers cover a wide range of fluid mixing conditions, it also serves as a mini-review, providing useful reference on the selection of optimum design for different applications.
Investigations into planar splitting and recombining micromixers with asymmetric structures

Abstract:Planar splitting and recombining micromixers have already been investigated due to their high mixing performance and simple fabrication process. However, there is still a lack of research on the mixing process under various geometrical parameters, especially the turning angles. Our research aims to investigate the characteristics of flow fields and the mixing performance of planar splitting and recombining micromixers with different asymmetric structures, using combined mixing experiments and numerical simulation. Four kinds of asymmetric structures, including the circular structure and the rhombic structure featured with three turning angles (30, 45 and 60), were designed and fabricated during the current research. The mixing performance was enhanced by the chaotic advection derived from secondary flows. The form and the intensity of the secondary flows differed between the four kinds of asymmetric structures due to the sharpness and the position of the changes in flow direction varying. A nondimensional parameter F, which considers both the mixing performance and the pressure drop, was presented to evaluate the overall performance of the micromixers. Compared with micromixers with symmetric structures, micromixers with asymmetric structures had a better overall performance. The micromixer with circular asymmetric structures exhibited the best overall performance, owing to the fully filled Dean vortices and a greater existing area of Dean vortices. In the case of rhombic asymmetric structures, a larger turning angle led to the better mixing performance, but the overall performance was affected by the higher pressure drop. The results obtained indicate that the planar splitting and recombining micromixer with circular asymmetric structures provides a satisfactory choice in the fluids mixing process of microfluidic systems.
