Abstract:In this paper microencapsulation of magnesium hydroxide, red phosphorus, inorganic phosphorus and organic flame retardants have been reviewed. The effects of different shell materials on the properties of microencapsulated flame retardant and composites have been carefully and thoroughly discussed. It has been demonstrated that microencapsulation provide better water resistance, flame retardancy, compatibility and higher pyrolysis temperature, etc. With proper shell material, the microcapsules not only possess better properties, but also can be used in more rigorous situation.

Abstract:The effects of the encapsulant, content, particle size and synergistic action of microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP)with other flame retardant on the flame retardancy, mechanical properties and smoke suppressing of flame-retarded LDPE cable compound were studied. The results showed that the flame retardancy of the compound containing MRP in the melamine resin and in the melamine resin/zinc borate was the best. When the content of the MRP was 8phr, the flame retardancy of the compound reached up to the level of UL94 V-0 and the LOI increased from 17.4% to 22.5%; and the effect on the mechanical properties of the compound was little when the content was within the extent of loading; among the binary systems, MRP/aluminium hydroxide, MRP/magnesium hydroxide and MRP/zinc borate had the excellent synergistic effects, the synergistic indexes were 1.6, 1.4 and 2.3 respectively, and MRP/zinc borate had good synergetic effects of smoke suppressing; among ternary systems, MRP/zinc borate/decabromodiphenyl, MRP/aluminium hydroxide/magnesium hydroxide and MRP/zinc borate/melamine had the excellent synergistic effects, the synergistic indexes were 2.6, 2.1 and 2.0 separately.

Abstract:The development on halogen-free flame retardant used for polycarbonate at home and abroad in recent years,including phosphorus flame retardant,aromatic sulfonates flame retardant,silicone flame retardant,boron flame retardant,inorganic flame retardants,nano-retardant and other flame retardant systems is reviewed.The flame retardant mechanisms of these systems are briefly introduced,and their advantages and disadvantages are also evaluated.Finally,the research and development trend of flame retardant for PC is presented.

Abstract:The application of microencapsulated red phosphorus(MRP) as flame retardant in EPDM compound was investigated.The results showed that the flame retardancy of MRP in EPDM compound was excellent.In the calcium carbonate filled EPDM,by blending MRP with magnesium hydroxide or aluminum hydroxide which provided good synergetic effect,the flame retardance of vulcanizate was significantly improved.

Abstract:Microencapsulated red phosphorus coated with melamine-formaldehyde(MF-MRP) was prepared via in-situ polymerization and polyurethane rigid foam(PURF) containing MF-MRP as the flame retardant was prepared by an all-water-blown method. The morphology of MF-MRP and its flame-retardance for PURF were studied by means of DTA, FTIR and SEM. The results indicated that because the red phosphorus was completely encapsulated by melamine-formaldehyde, the MFMRP's ignition point was heightened from 247°C to 430°C and its thermal stability was improved. The limiting oxygen index of PURF rase from 21.0% to 29.5% when the content of MF-MRP in PURF increased from 0 to 8%(w). The flame-retardance mechanism is condensative phase inflaming retarding. And the formation of charred layers on PURF's surface improved the flame-retardance of PURF.
Application of Micro Encapsulated Red Phosphorus Retandant in Flexible Polyurethane Foam

Abstract:The effects of content and size of encapsulated red phosphorus on the flame retardancy,smoke suppressing and mechanical properties of soft polyurethane foam were studied.It was found that double encapsulation of melamine resin and zinc borate provided the best flame retardancy.When the particle size of the encapsulated retardant increased,LOI increased but tensile strenght and elongation at break decreased.When its content was 3 phr,UL94 V-0 and 28.8 % LOI can be achieved without decreasing in mechanical properties.The smaller the encapsulated spheres,the better the flame retardancy and mechanical properties.Synergetic effects was observed when combined with other flame retardants.For the binary systems with zinc borate and decabromodiphenyl,the synergetic index were 2.4 and 1.4,respectively.In a ternary system with zinc borate plus decabromodiphenyl,the synergetic index was 1.6,and the LOI reached 34.9 %.

Abstract:Microcapsulated red phosphorus (MRP), with a melamine-formaldehyde resin coating layer, was prepared by two-step coating processes. The physical and chemical properties of MRP were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and other measurements. The flame retardant action and mechanism of MRP in the halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) polyolefins (PO) blends have been studied using cone calorimeter, limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic FTIR spectroscopy. The results show that the MRP, which is coated with melamine-formaldehyde resin, has a higher ignition point, a considerably lower amount of phosphine evolution and of water absorption compared with red phosphorus (RP) itself. The data observed by cone calorimeter, LOI and TGA measurements from the PO/HFFR blends demonstrated that the MRP can decrease the heat release rate and effective heat of combustion, and increase the thermostability and LOI values of PO materials. The dynamic FTIR results revealed the flame-retardant mechanism that RP can promote the formation of charred layers with the P-O and P-C complexes in the condensed phase during burning of polymer materials. Abstract:Currently,research and application of reactive phosphorus-containing polymer systems at home and abroad is still in initial phase. The introduction of phosphorus to improve the flame retardant of resin systems has been the focus of attention by researchers in recent years. In this paper,the mechanism of the phosphorus-containing flame retardant was simply discussed; a review on the recent developments in the research of reactive phosphorus-containing polymer ,including reactive flame retardant epoxy resins,poly-benzoxazine,poly(vinyl)s and poly(acrylic)s,polyamide,polyimide and polyurethane etc was given. Phosphorous-containing groups were introduced to the backbone chain or side chain of the polymers. The synthetic routes and properties were emphasized.

Abstract:Polypropylene has been used for applications requiring high mechanical properties, good adhesion, chemical stability and insulation. Whereas, Polypropylene itself is flammable, and its limiting oxygen index (LOI) is low, which cannot pass the UL-94 combustion test. Therefore, extensive use will cause a serious threat to human life and property. With the wide application of thermoplastic polypropylene in industry, the development of environmentally friendly flame retardant materials has become an important research direction. For the past dozen years, researchers have been exploring flame retardants with high flame retardant efficiency, low toxicity, less smoke or other excellent performance flame retardants. This paper reviews the research progress of some phosphorus-containing flame retardants on the flame retardant properties of polypropylene in recent years. Phosphorus flame retardant is a flame retardant with high flame retardant efficiency, good stability and wide application. The types and flame retardant properties of phosphorus flame retardant will be introduced, and the future research of phosphorus flame retardant is summarized, direction and development opportunities.

Abstract:Microcapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) coated with melamine-formaldehyde resin and zinc borate was prepared and characterized by FTIR, XPS and TEM. The thermal stability, water absorption and PH, production of MRP are significantly superior to that of bare red phosphorus. When MRP is incorporated in polyolifins, it imparts a good fire-retardant effect to the resins. The flame-retardant characters its mechanism were studied using LOI, TGA, real time FTIR spectroscopy, and SEM. The above results give the positive evidence of the flame-retardant mechanism that MRP promotes the formation of charred layers in the condensed phase during the burning of polymeric materials.

Abstract:The ubiquity of polymeric materials in daily life comes with an increased fire risk, and sustained research into efficient flame retardants is key to ensuring the safety of the populace and material goods from accidental fires. Phosphorus, a versatile and effective element for use in flame retardants, has the potential to supersede the halogenated variants that are still widely used today: current formulations employ a variety of modes of action and methods of implementation, as additives or as reactants, to solve the task of developing flame-retarding polymeric materials. Phosphorus-based flame retardants can act in both the gas and condensed phase during a fire. This Review investigates how current phosphorus chemistry helps in reducing the flammability of polymers, and addresses the future of sustainable, efficient, and safe phosphorus-based flame-retardants from renewable sources.

Preparation of microencapsulated red phosphorus and its flame-retardant application in PP composites

Abstract:In the present study, the melamine-formaldehyde prepolymer (MEP) was first synthesized at pH 8-8.5 under about 80 degrees C with melamine, formaldehyde, triethanolamine and methanol as the starting materials. Subsequently, the microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) was successfully prepared by in-situ polymerization at pH 5.5 under 65 degrees C, using MFP and red phosphorus (RP) powders as raw materials, and potassium persulphate (KPS) as catalyst. The obtained products were detected by differential scan calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FUR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that KPS is useful in enhancing the reaction activity of MFP, which can make RP be well encapsulated by melamine-formaldehyde resin (ME) and reduce the reaction time. The DSC, SEM and XPS results show that it won't get well-encapsulated MRP only under acidic condition and without any KPS. When a proper quantity of K'S is employed, the RP particles can be almost completely-encapsulated by MF and the peak temperature of oxidation reaction for MRP is 480 degrees C, which is much higher than that of RP, extending the applications for MRP. The FTIR spectrum demonstrates that the coating material on the surface of RP accurately is ME, in agreement with the reference. Polyproplene (PP) composites with different formulations were prepared by melt extrusion. It was shown that the flame-retardant efficiencies are very low when the PP composites only contain MRP or MH. However, the flame-retardant property can obviously improve if MRP and MH are both used in the PP composites. When PP : MRP MH=100 (phr) : 15 (phr) : 50 (phr), the limited oxygen index of the MRP/MH/PP composite is 26%, and vertical firing ranks UL-94 V-0. In addition, the possible flame-retardant mechanism of the PP composites has also been discussed, and further verified by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:This paper introduces the current progress of flame retarded polyurethane materials containing phosphorus and halogen flame retardants .The main works are now developing new additive flame retardants, reactive flame retardants of organic phosphnate and flame retarded binders for flame retarded polyurethane materials. This paper also suggests that the future works should focus on improving comprehensive properties of flame retarded polyurethane materials and going deep into study flame retarded mechanism.
