Abstract:Using a period immersion wet/dry cyclic corrosion test, in-situ copper-coated steels prepared by corroding copper-bearing steels were investigated in this study. The steel with a higher copper content (>3%) has a higher initial corrosion rate due to its obvious two-phase microstructure. The corrosion rates of all copper bearing steels tend to be stable after a certain time of corrosion. A copper-rich layer is formed between the matrix and the rust layer, which is due to the diffusion of copper from the rust layer to the metal surface. The copper’s stability under this corrosion condition led to the formation of a thin copper-rich film, which was uncovered after removing the rust by choosing appropriate descaling reagents. The copper coating was generated from the matrix itself during the corrosion process at 25 °C, which provided a new approach for producing in-situ composite materials without any bonding defect. It is found that the corrosion rate, corrosion time, and copper content in steel all affect the formation of copper-rich layer. In addition to the noble copper surface, the electrochemical corrosion test results show that the corrosion resistance of copper-coated steel has been significantly improved.

Abstract:Incorporating expensive alloying elements into bulk steel for corrosion protection is undesirable, considering that only the surfaces are exposed to aggressive environments. Therefore, this work focused on developing and optimizing a new surface functioning technology through in situ observation of thermal interactions between the metallic powders at elevated temperatures. The study revealed that the Cu-Ni powder mixture, with 12.5 wt% Ni, began to melt at 1099.5 °C and was fully melted at 1175 °C, significantly different from the Cu-Ni solid solution and bulk Cu or Ni. As a result of high-temperature reactions, copper penetration of up to 35 μm for pure copper and 55 μm for copper-chromium composite coatings occurred due to liquid metal corrosion. In contrast, the copper-nickel composite coating exhibited a cupronickel solution microstructure with FeNi dendrites and a nickel-rich transition layer. This cupronickel coating, with a chemical composition of 89.3 wt% Cu, 6.2 wt% Ni, and 4.5 wt% Fe, demonstrated uniform thickness, superior surface morphology, and continuous coverage on the steel substrate. Furthermore, the Ni-rich transition layer played a vital role in preventing copper penetration along the grain boundary of the steel matrix while forming a chemical binding between the coating and the substrate. The practicality of the coating was further confirmed through the hot-rolling procedure and subsequent electrochemical corrosion tests, which resulted in a 44% improvement in corrosion resistance.

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of Ti and Cu addition on inclusion modification and corrosion behavior in the simulated coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) of low-alloy steels were investigated by using in-situ scanning vibration electrode technique (SVET), scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and electrochemical workstation. The results demonstrated that the complex inclusions formed in Cu-bearing steel were (Ti, Al, Mn)-Ox-MnS, which was similar to that in base steel. Hence, localized corrosion was initiated by the dissolution of MnS. However, the main inclusions in Ti-bearing steels were modified into TiN-Al2O3/TiN, and the localized corrosion was initiated by the dissolution of high deformation region at inclusion/matrix interface. With increased interface density of inclusions in steels, the corrosion rate increased in the following order: Base steel ≈ Cu-bearing steel < Ti-bearing steel. Owing to the existence of Cu-enriched rust layer, the Cu-bearing steel shows a similar corrosion resistance with base steel.

Abstract:Heat exchanger materials with high strength and thin thickness are highly required due to the increasing demands of weight reduction and fuel economy of the automobile. In this work, 0.5 wt% Cu was added to an Al-1.5Mn-0.3Fe-0.6Si (wt.%) alloy to improve the strength. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and electrochemical properties of the tested alloys were systematically investigated. The results suggest that part of Cu is dissolved into the Al matrix, and the balance is incorporated into the Al(Mn,Fe)Si particles. Cu addition improves the strength at the expense of deteriorating the pitting corrosion resistance. On the one hand, the improved strength derives from enhanced solid solution hardening and increased nanoparticle strengthening. On the other hand, the incorporation of Cu in the Al(Mn,Fe)Si intermetallic particles increases the potential difference between the particles and the Al matrix, resulting in the deteriorated pitting corrosion resistance. Corrosion Behaviour of Cu/Carbon Steel Gradient Material

Abstract:Research on improving the corrosion resistance of carbon steel has become a hot topic in the iron and steel field in recent years. Copper plating on the surface of carbon steel is considered an effective means to improve its corrosion resistance, but the copper-plated carbon steel material prepared by this method has the problems of poor abrasion resistance, easy delamination of copper layer and similar issues, which affect the service performance of the copper-plated carbon steel material. To solve this problem, a new type of material whose surface is copper and the copper element is gradually diffused into carbon steel was developed by a plating-diffusion method, which is defined as a copper-carbon steel gradient material. Carbon steel with a copper plated surface and the Cu-Fe/carbon steel gradient material with 80% Cu content on the surface were prepared by the same method. The cross-sectional microstructure and composition of different samples were analysed, and the corrosion behaviors of samples in 3.5% NaCl solution were studied by the linear polarization curve method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The cross-sectional microstructure result shows that the diffusion of copper in carbon is mainly carried out along its grain boundary, and the diffusion of copper will inhibit the growth of grains during heat treatment. As shown in the results of corrosion behaviors, there is no pitting corrosion in the corrosion process of all samples, as well as the stable passive film. All samples showed active dissolution. Compared with carbon steel, the corrosion potential of the Cu/carbon steel gradient material becomes more positive from −600 mV to −362 mV, the corrosion current density decreases from 53.0 μA/cm2 to 30.6 μA/cm2 and the radius of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy enlarges while the corrosion resistance is improved, and the corrosion resistance is mainly obtained by its surface copper layer. The corrosion resistance of Cu-Fe/carbon steel gradient material is lower than that of Cu/carbon steel gradient material, while it is still better than carbon steel, and it shows a clear passivation trend during corrosion. Therefore, the copper/carbon steel gradient material can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of carbon steel. Even after the surface copper layer is destroyed, the gradient material can protect the matrix and improve the service life of the material.

Abstract:Effects of copper addition on microstructure and tensile property of a hot rolled ferrite-based lightweight steel are investigated. Copper addition delays bainitic transformation, resulting in higher volume fraction of retained austenite with lower stability in the steel. Addition of 1.0wt% copper increases the yield strength and tensile strength of the steel by 17% and 19%, respectively, and maintains high ductility. The yield strength enhancement is predominantly attributed to nanoscale copper precipitation. The higher work hardening rate due to precipitation hardening and the transformation-induced-plasticity mechanism leads to higher tensile strength (805MPa) and remarkable elongation-to-failure (~30%) for the copper-containing steel.

Abstract:Sintered steel is widely used in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, and construction machinery, due to its notable attributes such as high precision, wear resistance, efficient material utilization, and cost-effectiveness. However, the presence of pores hinders sintered steel from achieving a fully dense state, thereby restricting its broader applications. Copper infiltration enables the reduction or elimination of pores, minimizes stress concentration, and prevents microcrack formation. Consequently, this process significantly enhances the material’s density and mechanical properties, particularly its dynamic mechanical characteristics such as impact toughness and fatigue performance. This paper provides an overview of the copper infiltration development history in sintered steel, summarizes the factors including substrate, infiltrant, and infiltration process, and highlights the research progress in copper infiltration application in sintered steel. Furthermore, challenges associated with copper-infiltrated sintered steel are discussed, and recommendations for future development are presented.

Abstract:The effect of alloying copper on the dissolution of manganese sulphide which triggers the pitting corrosion of stainless steels was studied by in-situ ex-environment transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with an atomic resolution. It was found that the benefits of Cu addition act in two ways: Cu ions replace the Mn ions in the surface layer of MnS and insoluble copper sulphide compound forms; on the other hand, Cu ions could stabilize harmful surphur species released from dissolved MnS. The two processes are supposed to be helpful to reduce the detrimental effect of MnS on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The characteristic point temperature and composition of fe-Cu and Fe-C-Cu phase diagrams are introduced. The effect of Cu on the eutectic structure of cast iron, anti-ferritization and strengthening of cast iron matrix are described. It is pointed out that during eutectic transition, copper promotes graphitization, eliminates free cementite, and promotes the solidification of cast iron in a stable system. It is also pointed out that in cast iron, due to the presence of silicon and carbon, copper has a significant solution strengthening effect on cast iron. It is considered that copper can increase tensile strength and hardness of cast iron.

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation on the role of Cu addition in microstructure and toughness of intercritically reheated coarse grained heat affected zone (ICCGHAZ), aiming at elucidating the influencing mechanism of Cu addition on toughness in terms of reverted transformation, alloying element diffusion and variant selection. The element of Cu has a significant effect on reverted structure and Cu-rich precipitates by influencing the diffusion of alloying elements and variant selection. On the one hand, the addition of Cu changed the diffusion kinetics of Ni and Mn, decreasing the segregation of elements at grain boundaries. Accordingly, the reverted structure at grain boundary with an adverse effect on toughness was reduced. Moreover, Cu addition changed the feature of CP group during variant selection, and thus increased the high angle grain boundary density. On the other hand, Cu-rich precipitates were increased after Cu addition, which was easier to originate crack. But, the ductile character of the reverted structure would overwhelm the harmful effect of Cu-rich precipitates on the toughness. As a result, a higher low temperature toughness with impact energy of 72.8 J at −40 °C was achieved in 1.5Cu steel than that in 0Cu steel (36.3 J).

Abstract:The novel Mn–N alloyed lean duplex stainless steels with different addition of Cu were fabricated and studied in this paper. The effects of Cu addition, solid solution treatments and second phase precipitation on resistance to pitting corrosion were discussed in detail. The addition of 0.5% Cu can significantly improve the resistance to pitting corrosion due to that Cu can increase the activity of alloying Cr and facilitate the diffusion of Cr into ferrite phase, leading to the concentration of alloying Cr in ferrite phase. The corrosion resistance of present steels was decreased with the increase in solid solution treatment temperature from 1000 to 1150 °C due to the increasing difference of pitting corrosion resistivity between ferrite and austenite. The second phase precipitation of Cr2N can consume the beneficial elements of Cr and N in ferrite, leading to a dramatic decrease in corrosion resistance. The pitting potential of the present steel was sensitive to the aging treatments, and it was continuously decreased with the increase in aging time.

Abstract:Effect of copper on microstructure,mechanical property and hot workability of 00Cr25Ni7Mo4N super duplex stainless steel was studied.The results showed that copper was an element which had little effect on expanding the phase field of austenite.The strength of 00Cr25Ni7Mo4N was increased and the toughness was decreased after the solution treatment with addition of 1.5% Cu.The area contraction of the steel sample with 1.5% Cu was decreased in the range of 900～1100℃.But in the range of 1150～1250℃,the contraction for steels with Cu and without Cu was almost the same and higher than 60%.It followed from the experiment results that the steels had better hot workability under high temperature.

Abstract:Deoxidation by aluminum in steels is used most widely now because of its high efficiency and relatively low cost. But the reaction products of the deoxidation arid residual aluminum in steels can result in the creep brittleness and decrease of high temperature strength of heat-resistant steels. In addition, alumina is the origin of fatigue crack and thus impairs the fatigue property of bearing steels, rail steels and wheel steels. It is necessary to understand the deoxidation by aluminum in steels again due to the harmful effect. In recent years, the study of deoxidation by compound deoxidizers in steels shows that properties of steels can be improved by using compound deoxidizers.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern science and industrial technology, single metals or alloys are restricted by working conditions and cost. It is challenging to meet the requirements for current applications. Copper (Cu)–steel bimetal composites, composed of copper and steel, have performances of the two metals and low cost. They have drawn extensive attention worldwide and have been developed by many scholars for many years. The new preparations are studies to promote performances of the copper–steel bimetal composites and many literatures have also reported different applications of the copper–steel bimetal composites. Up to today, the developing copper–steel bimetal composites have made a great progress. This paper is mainly concerned with the progress of research on the preparation of copper–steel bimetal composites. The preparations are classified according to the forming state of copper and steel. Furthermore, the industrial applications of copper–steel bimetal composites and the prospects of future development are introduced.
Achieving Novel Copper–steel Joints with a Combination of High Strength and Ductility Reinforced by In-Situ Fe-rich Particles

Abstract:Strength and ductility are typically mutually exclusive in traditional copper-steel joints. This work proposes a strategy to overcome the inherent trade-off between strength and ductility through high speed electron beam welding with a preferred deflection to facilitate the in-situ formation of Fe-rich particles in the Cu matrix. The Fe-rich particles with an average diameter of 178.5 nm feature a 3D spatial network distribution across practically the entire joint. The obtained joint reinforced with such Fe-rich particles achieves ultimate high tensile strength (413 MPa) while maintaining excellent ductility (22%). The improved strength of the copper-steel joint is derived from the combined effects of dislocation strengthening and grain refinement strengthening, while the increase in room-temperature ductility is mainly due to the high Schmid factor up to 0.454, which promotes the primary slip system to initiate easily during tensile deformation. This work provides a novel perspective on creating copper-steel joints in terms of achieving microstructural refinement and outstanding strength-ductility synergy.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.
