Abstract:The structure of a miniature pulsed ion beam accelerator with the pinch-reflex ion beam diode is described. The diode can steadily work at the voltage of 200kV,and the ion beam current of 1.5kA, average ion beam current density of 110A/cm-2 with a pulse width of about 20ns is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, operational principle of the pinch-reflex ion diode is analyzed, effects of various pinch-reflex ion diode parameters on beam electrical parameters are studied. From a large number of experiments, the peak ion current of 2.1 kA and ion beam energy of 5.5 J with a pulse width of about 20 ns are obtained, with the best ion current generation efficiency being 6.2 %.

Abstract:The effects of ion motion on the generation of short-cycle relativistic laser pulses during radiation pressure acceleration are investigated by analytical modeling and particle-in-cell simulations. Studies show that the rear part of the transmitted pulse modulated by ion motion is sharper compared with the case of the electron shutter only. In this study, the ions further modulate the short-cycle pulses transmitted. A 3.9 fs laser pulse with an intensity of 1.33×1021 W cm-2 is generated by properly controlling the motions of the electron and ion in the simulations. The short-cycle laser pulse source proposed can be applied in the generation of single attosecond pulses and electron acceleration in a small bubble regime.

Abstract:The paper focuses on the formation of high-intensity submillisecond chromium ion beams with a high power density. The ion-induced electron emission at the energy reaching 70 keV affects the neutralization of space charge and determination accuracy of the ion beam parameters. It is shown that at high ion energies, the virtual anode effect does not appear, and the formation of ion beams of a high pulse duration occurs. It is found that at 170 A discharge current, the maximum current density averaged over 16 pulses, reaches 2.8 A/cm 2 . The maximum power density in the ion beam at 35 kV accelerating voltage approaches to 100 kW/cm 2 . Instability of the ion-induced electron emission from the vacuum arc plasma improves the power density of pulses by more than 2 times.

Abstract:The cross-sectional distribution and focusing properties of intense pulsed ion beam by an active magnetically insulated diode for material modification is presented. The ion beam accelerator BIPPAB-450 uses the surface flashover of polymers as the ion source, generates intense pulsed ion beam composed of protons and carbon ions with a pulse length of 120 ns, ion energy up to 450 keV, energy density up to 3 J/cm2. By the strong flash thermal effects on the surface of materials, the ion beam can be used for the surface treatment and ablation related application. The cross-sectional distribution of the ion beam was measured by infrared imaging method. The results on the focusing of the diode reveal the distribution in the plasma generation on the anode surface. Comparative study on beam focusing during transportation was made and it is demonstrated that by using a copper beam limiter, the maximum beam energy density can be increased by a factor of nearly 1.5. The change in the beam phase-space distribution by the limiter is also exhibited and the influence on beam diagnostics and optimization is discussed reasonably.

Abstract:An electron-beam accelerator, which consists of a primary storage capacitor system, an air core spiral strip transformer, water Blumlein line of water dielectric, and a field-emission diode, is described. The experimental results show that the diode voltage is more than 400 kV, electron beam current is about 40 kA, and the pulse duration is more than 80 ns. This accelerator is very compact and works stably and reliably.

Abstract:We use large scale, three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations to demonstrate that a high-quality energetic ion beam can be stably generated by irradiation of a multi-species nanofoil target with an intense few-cycle laser pulse. In this scheme named “electrostatic capacitance-type acceleration,” the light ions of the nanofoil are accelerated by a uniform capacitor-like electrostatic field induced by the laser-blown-out electrons that act like the cathode of a capacitor, while the heavy ions left behind serve as the anode. This scheme overcomes the inherent obstacles existing in the other acceleration mechanisms, such as uncontrollability of target normal sheath acceleration and instability of radiation pressure acceleration. Theoretical studies and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that this acceleration scheme is much more stable and efficient than the previous ones, by which 100 MeV monoenergetic proton beams (energy spread <10%) can be obtained with a laser energy less than 10 J, and the giga electron volt ones with about 100 J.

Abstract:A multi-functional pulsed radiation system with a peak voltage of 200 kV, an impedance of 2 Ω, and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 30 ns is developed. The system can be switched flexibly in two states of generating pulsed electron beam and pulsed X-ray by changing the cathode and anode. It consists of a pulse power driving source, a vacuum diode, and an experimental cavity. A Marx generator, a high energy storage water transmission line, and two pulse compression switches are utilized to generate a high voltage on diode. An effector can be placed in the experimental cavity which has the same vacuum as diode. An insulation structure of transmission line and a diode are optimized to guide in system design. The system can provide a multi-functional experimental platform for investigating pulse power technology, system-generated electromagnetic pulse, biological radiation effect, etc. The Marx generator generates a high-voltage pulse with hundreds of nanoseconds in FWHM and hundreds of kilovolts in peak value. The pulse is compressed by the main switch and pulse forming switch and then loaded to the diode. Electrons are emitted from diode cathode under the high-voltage pulse and accelerated in the gap. The electrons are extracted directly or converted into X-ray through the anode. Aluminized polyethylene is used as an anode when pulsed electron beam is generated, and tantalum film is used when pulsed X-ray is generated. Working state can be switched by changing the cathode and anode of diode. The result shows that a current of 83 kA pulsed electron beam and an average energy of 67 keV X-ray are generated. Pulsed X-ray has good uniformity and low electron proportion (0.02%). In order to monitor the operation state and output parameter of the system comprehensively, a complete measurement system is established. Three capacitive voltage dividers are set at the beginning of transmission line, the end of pulse forming line, and the end of output line, while a B - dot current monitor is set at the diode. A Faraday cup is developed to measure the current intensity and the total energy of pulsed electron beam. For energy spectrum, dose and electron proportion, the measurement system composed of pulsed X-ray including spectrometric system, dose system and Rogowski Coil is build.

Abstract:An electron-beam accelerator based on spiral water pulse forming line which consists of a primary storage capacitor system, an air core spiral strip transformer, a spiral pulse forming line of water dielectric, and a field-emission diode, is described. The experimental results showed that the diode voltage is more than 500 kV, the electron beam current of diode is about 24 kA, and the pulse duration is about 200 us. The main parameters of the accelerator were calculated theoretically. The distributions for electrical field in the pulse forming line were obtained by the simulations. In addition, the process of the accelerator charging a spiral pulse forming line was simulated through the Pspice software to get the waveforms of charging voltage of pulse forming line, the diode voltage and diode current of accelerator. The theoretical and simulated results agree with the experimental results. This accelerator is very compact and works stably and reliably.

Abstract:The Mini-LIA is a double-pulse linear induction electron accelerator with megahertz repetition rates, which consists of a double-pulse power system, a thermal cathode electron gun, two induction cells, beam transportation systems and diagnosis systems, etc. Experiments of the Mini-LIA have been conducted. The double-pulse high voltage was obtained with several hundred nanosecond pulse intervals (i.e. megahertz repetition rate) and each pulse had an 80 kV amplitude with a FWHM of 80 ns. In the gap of the induction cell, the double-pulse accelerating electric field was measured via E-field probes, and the double-pulse electron beam with a current about 1.1 A has been obtained at the Mini-LIA exit. These experimental results show that the double-pulse high voltage with megahertz repetition rates can be generated by an insulation and junction system. And they also indicate that the induction cell with metglas as the ferromagnetic material and the LaB6 thermal cathode electron gun suit the double-pulse operation with megahertz repetition rates.

Abstract:The research on ion acceleration driven by high intensity laser pulse has attracted significant interests in recent decades due to the developments of laser technology. The intensive study of energetic ion bunches is particularly stimulated by wide applications in nuclear fusion, medical treatment, warm dense matter production and high energy density physics. However, to implement such compact accelerators, challenges are still existing in terms of beam quality and stability, especially in applications that require higher energy and narrow bandwidth spectra ion beams. We report on the acceleration of quasi-mono-energetic ion beams via ionization dynamics in the interaction of an intense laser pulse with a solid target. Using ionization dynamics model in 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we found that high charge state contamination ions can only be ionized in the central spot area where the intensity of sheath field surpasses their ionization threshold. These ions automatically form a microstructure target with a width of few micron scale, which is conducive to generate mono-energetic beams. In the experiment of ultraintense (< 10^21 W/cm^2) laser pulses irradiating ultrathin targets each attracted with a contamination layer of nm-thickness, high quality < 100 MeV mono-energetic ion bunches are generated. The peak energy of the self-generated micro-structured target ions with respect to different contamination layer thickness is also examined This is relatively newfound respect, which is confirmed by the consistence between experiment data and the simulation results.

Abstract:Mini-LIA is a miniature of linear induction accelerator developed by China Academy of Engineering Physics and Tsinghua University. Double-pulsed beam emitting was realized with thermionic cathode and metglas core in induction accelerating cavity. Electron beam current more than 1.1A was obtained on condition of 80kV double-pulsed high voltage produced by pulsed power system supplying to injector and accelerating modules. Further improvement is under way.

Abstract:Structures of several types of intense pinching diodes were introduced.The latest simulation and experiment results on rod pinch focusing diodes were introduced.Experimental researches were carried out on FLASH Ⅱ and 2 MV pulsed power drivers.The voltage of RPD is 1.8~2.1 MV,the current is 40~60 kA,the FWHM is 50~60 ns.The X-ray dose at 1 m from the diode in the forward direction was about 20~30 mGy.The spot diameter was about 1 mm,the maximum energy was 1.8 MeV.The preliminary research results for generation and application of high power ion beam(HPIB) on the FLASH Ⅱaccelerator were reported.The structure and principle of pinch reflex ion beam diode were introduced.The HPIB peak current of ~160 kA is obtained with a peak energy of ~500 keV.The experimental investigations of generating 6~7 MeV quasi-monoenergetic pulsed γ-rays with high power ion(proton) beams striking 19F target are presented.In addition,the research results for thermal-mechanical effects on the material irradiated with HPIB applied to simulation X-ray were also discussed.

Abstract:Using a high-intensity terahertz (THz) pulse to accelerate particles holds a promising approach for the miniaturization of particle accelerators. Here, we propose a novel THz-driven particle acceleration scheme, which utilizes a Cherenkov THz pulse generated by an electron bunch to accelerate particles within the bunch, without resorting to any externally driven sources. A high-intensity Cherenkov THz pulse is first generated, as a high-charge electron bunch moves through the bunch channel in a dielectric axicon and is then reflected by the lateral face of the axicon, forming a focused THz pulse in another dielectric axicon downstream, whereby part of the original electron bunch catches the THz pulse and is accelerated for a relatively large length via the inverse Cherenkov (ICR) effect. The acceleration gradient is determined by the initial bunch charge, which can be higher than 40 MV/m, as the bunch charge is greater than 10 nC. This is an all-dielectric accelerator with simplified equipment, which affords a promising option for the development of compact and even table-top accelerators.

Abstract:For the commercial application of pulsed power, material processing with intense pulsed particle beams is a very interesting subject, Recently, high-voltage (1-70 kV), low-pressure (1-100 Pa) transient hollow-cathode discharges turned out to be sources for pulsed intense electron beam generation suitable for this application, The remarkable parameters of these electron beams-beam currents of 50-1000 A (10-30% of the maximum discharge current) with a high energy component (mean energy of about 0.25-0.75 of maximum applied voltage) of 20-70% of the maximum beam current, power density up to 10(9) W/cm(2), beam diameters of 0.1-3 mm, beam charge efficiency of 3-5%-captured the attention not only of the scientific community in the last decade, The electron beam is emitted during the early phases of the discharge, and only weak dependence of the high energetic peak of the beam current was found on the external capacity, which determine the development of the later high-current phases. However, the beam parameters depend on the breakdown voltage, gas pressure, and discharge geometry (including self-capacity),In this paper, the characteristics of the pulsed intense electron beams generated in two configurations-multigap pseudosparks and preionization-controlled open-ended hollow-cathode transient discharges (PCOHC)-are described, Such electron beams already were used successfully in a variety of pulsed power applications in material processing, deposition of superconducting (YBaCuO) and diamond-like thin films, microlithography, electron sources for accelerators, and intense point-like X-ray sources, and some preliminary experiments revealed new potential applications such as pumping of short-wavelength laser active media, These pulsed electron beams could be used further In any kind of pulsed power applications that require high-power density, small or high electron energy, and small-beam diameters.

Abstract:Ionization-induced electron injection in a chirped laser pulse driven wakefield acceleration is investigated through particle-in-cell simulations. We find that negative (positive) chirp can longitudinally stretch (compress) laser pulse, and the wakefield amplitude can be enhanced regardless of the chirp sign. On the other hand, the rapid compression of a positively chirped pulse leads to the decrease of the wakefield potential difference, which breaks the ionization injection condition and consequent injection truncation occurs. The effective injection only lasts for a few hundred micrometers and the detailed injection length is determined by the chirp parameter. As a result, a highly tunable quasi-monoenergetic electron beam with narrow energy spread, hundreds of MeV central energy and tens of pC charge can be stably produced by this scheme.

Abstract:Dragon-Ⅱaccelerator can provide three pulse electron beams under MHz repetition rate what the performance of each pulse electron beam is 18-20 MeV, 2.1 kA, 60 ns pulse length. Three pulses with adjustable spacing(300 ns minimum spacing) are delivered to the bremsstrahlung targets, generating three 1.7 mm(FWHM) spot size X-ray pulses with a dose of 7.7410-2C/kg (300 R) at 1 m. The key technology is analyzed in the accelerator development and the design requirements.

Abstract:One of the important building blocks on Qiangguang- I accelerator is the short-pulse high dose rate gamma-ray source, which is mainly used to generate short pulse intense bremsstrahlung. In this paper, the process of generating high dose rate gamma-ray with about 20 ns pulse duration on Qiangguang- I accelerator was introduced. The insulating characteristics of insulator and MITL of short-pulse high-impedance intense electron beam diode were analyzed in detail. The characterization of plasma opening switch(POS) was presented. The design approach for diode operating parameters including the diode impedance, cathode and anode was described. The experimental results show that the pulse duration of bremsstrahlung is about 20 ns, and the dose rates at areas of 2,30 and 100 cm~2 are 10~(11), 0.7×10~(11)and 10~(10) Gy/s respectively.

Abstract:Laser driven particle acceleration has shown remarkable progresses in generating multi-GeV electron bunches and 10s of MeV ion beams based on high-power laser facilities. Intense laser pulse offers the acceleration field of 1012 Volt per meter, several orders of magnitude larger than that in conventional accelerators, enabling compact devices. Here we report that a highly-collimated argon ion beam with narrow energy spread is produced by irradiating a 45-fs fully-relativistic laser pulse onto an argon cluster target. The highly-charged (Argon ion with charge state of 16+) heavy ion beam has a minimum absolute energy spread of 0.19 MeV per nucleon at the energy peak of 0.39 MeV per nucleon. we identify a novel scheme from particle-in-cell simulations that greatly reduces the beam energy spread. The laser-driven intense plasma wakefield has a strong modulation on the ion beam in a way that the low energy part is cut off. The pre-accelerated argon ion beam from Coulomb explosion thus becomes more mono-energetic and collimated.

Abstract:The design of 10MeV/20kW high power irradiating accelerator is presented. The Backward-Taveling-Wave (BTW) accelerating structure is adopted. This structure combines the advantage of traveling-wave accelerator structure with low power reflection and high stability and standing-wave accelerator structure with high shunt impedance. The work frequency of this accelerator is 2856MHz. Designed by Code AccDesign which is coded by ourselves, the output electron beam with final energy 10MeV and peak current 300mA was reached. The length of the accelerating tube is 1.5m, and the power efficiency from microwave to electron beam is 66%. The temperature and stress distribution were simulated. And the frequency shift by microwave loss was calculated.
