Abstract:The existing methods for watershed zoning have tended to be very subjective in China.This is especially true for the zoning of the water pollution control-unit,resulting from the lack of unified zoning methodologies and regulations.Aiming at this problem,a three-level zoning system or the watershed-control regions-control units system is proposed in the study.The system adopts a combined approach of qualitative and quantitative methods for the zoning study of watershed pollution control.An Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) model will be constructed at the control-unit level,which is the central piece of the system.Based on four factors,i.e.catchment characteristics,urban distribution,industrial distribution and agricultural distribution,a watershed is divided into various control units according to the main direction of various discharge sources.The system is applied to the Songhua River watershed as a study case.The whole watershed is ultimately divided into three control regions and thirty-three control-units.It is noted that ten counties including Morin Dawa Daur Autonomous Banner,are divided into two or more control units.The proposed system for the zoning study of watershed pollution control in China is based on the nature of basin catchments and fully embodies the focus and direction for the management of watershed pollution control.It sets up the implementing targets and spells out the responsibilities and missions for local governments.It thus could provide the basis and guarantee for scientifically planning and implementing watershed pollution control plans in China.

Abstract:In 1999 and 2000,the investigation on zoobenthos was carried out respectively in different sections of a shrimp culturing pond, which located in water-in, water-standing and water-out. Fifteen species of zoobenthos were observed and three of them were dominant in their inhabiting density. The largest density of zoobenthos was polychaete, which reached 115 ind/m 2. Using the bio-index which integrated Beck-index, Chandler Score system, Shannon-wiener-index and Simpson-index, we assessed the water quality of the pond. Results indicated that water in this pond was polluted seriously, especially in the section of water-standing. The water quality became worse in the second year. How to prevent water from pollution was also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Benthic macroinvertebrates are the main components of the aquatic ecosystem and play a key role in function and health of aquatic ecosystem.With the increasing emphasis on the aquatic ecosystem management based on watershed integrity in China,the studies on aquatic ecosystem health is more and more detailed,thus the study of benthic macroinvertebrates are improved not only in depth but also in breadth.The main study tasks,impacting factors and analytical methods on benthic macroinvertebrates were summarized at home and abroad in recent years.The results indicate that the response of benthic macroinverebrates to the variation of aquatic ecosystem is significant on the spatial scale,so the effects of natural environment,habitat conditions and water quality on benthic animal diversity and its community structure in the different spatial scales were analyzed.The variations of water environment factors caused by the human activities or the damage of habitat could influence directly the species composition and community features of benthic animal according to the integrated analysis of various factors.The analytical methods on benthic animal could be classified as two types,namely,a model analytical method and a biology index assessment method.Which one is selected in the actual application depends on the features of model and index.
Research Progress on Ecology of Natural Wetland Zoobenthos in China

Abstract:Zoobenthos is an important part in wetland ecosystem, and plays a connection link in energy flow and matter cycling. Its community structure can reflect the abiotic factors (e.g., bottom sediment condition, water quality, and water temperature) and biotic factors (e.g., vegetation, interactions between species, and predation pressure). This paper introduced the concept, life forms, and functional groups of zoobenthos, and discussed the features of the study on the ecology of zoobenthos as well as the related key research areas and important achievements in China, with the focus on the spatiotemporal difference in the distribution of zoobenthos community, relationships between zoobenthos and environmental factors, and indicative significance of zoobenthos as bio-indicator in water health. The future research directions on the ecology of zoobenthos in China were prospected.

Abstract:The construction of benthos community in the Wei River was investigated from March to May, 2005. To assess the water quality, Trent biotic index, Chandler biotic score, Goodnight biotic index, GBI and King biotic index were applied combining chemical analysis of water. The same work was conducted in Qishui river to be as cross reference. A total of 9 genera of benthos were found including 3 genera of annelid, 6 genera of hydra-insects. The density and biomass of benthos were 2 728 ind/m2 and 11. 56 g/m2 respectively. The dominant genera was Limnodrilus. The results indicated that Wei River has been polluted to Ultra- V level and hence caused heavy pollution to Qishui River.

Abstract:In water ecosystems, zoobenthos are one of the most important communities. Maintenance of healthy zoobenthos community is essential for water ecosystems remediation. Understanding the hydrology and water quality factors that drive the variation of zoobenthos is the priority for water ecosystems remediation. The present study used canonical correlation analysis to select the main habitat factors affecting zoobenthic communities based on field sampling of the river zoobenthos in the first pilot city for the construction of civilized water ecosystems in China-Jinan City. In addition, analysis was performed based on geoscience methods of Global Moran's I and Anselin local Moran's I spatial autocorrelation of main habitats factors. The results show that the key water quality physical factors affecting Jinan City zoobenthic communities were pH and conductivity; the key water quality chemical factors were K+, Na+, and permanganate index; and the key hydrological factor was water depth. The sodium ions and conductivity exhibited significant spatial autocorrelation in all seasons. And the regions exhibiting spatial autocorrelation were generally stable. Moreover, the characteristics of benthic animals are closely related to human activities of domestic sewage discharge in the central and agricultural activities in northern parts of the study area. All methods in this paper can be extended to the researches on other communities, for example, algae, zooplankton, and fish in water ecosystems. The methods and results in the paper can provide significant references for managers to protect and restore degraded water ecosystems in global water.

Abstract:Many large rivers in China have an inflow of contaminated water. Water pollution caused by urban sewage and agriculture, and occasionally pollution events from industries have become a significant stress on aquatic ecology. Pollution affects the biodiversity of the aquatic community and the species composition changes from natural species to tolerant species. The species composition of aquatic animals may reflect water pollution level. Extremely non-uniform distributions of functional feeding groups occurred as a result of high nutrient levels. A combination of chemical and biological methods constitutes the best approach for biological monitoring studies that measure water quality. Macroinvertebrates were used as bio-assessment indicator to determine the environmental quality of given water body. In this study, samples of water and macroinvertebrates were taken from several dozen sites in 14 rivers in China with different pollution levels, including the Yangtze, East, Weihe, Songhua, Yongding, and Panlong rivers. Macroinvertebrates were identified to genus or family level. Water samples were classified into different water quality grades according to the concentration of different substances. Five biological indices: taxa richness ( S ), density ( D ), total BMWQ score (t-BMWQ), average BMWQ score (a-BMWQ), and the family biotic index (FBI) were used for biological assessment of water quality. Analyzing macroinvertebrates’ occurrence in different water quality levels, taxa-specific indicators, which are defined as the taxa of macroinvertebrates that live in a certain water quality level but do not exist in other water quality levels were proposed for water quality bio-assessment. Leptophlebiidae, Siphlonuridae, Arctopsychidae, Perlidae, and Antocha sp. are the taxa-specific indicators for very good or good water quality; Chironomidae, Lymnaeidae, Tubifex sp., Limnodrilus sp., Limnoperna lacustris , Corbicula sp., Macrobrachium sp., Planorbidae, Glossiphoniidae, and Branchiura sp. are the taxa-specific indicators for very poor water quality; and Psychomyiidae and Hydroptilidae are the taxa-specific indicators for moderate water quality.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction : The application of remote-sensing techniques for water quality assessment has become increasingly popular in China. However, existing reviews are often limited to qualitative description and are quite fragmented. Outcomes : We conducted a quantitative systematic review to display current research status and identify the existing challenges and future directions. Our review revealed that the application of remote-sensing techniques in water quality research has expanded dramatically in China, but the spatial distribution is quite uneven. Second, the ground object spectrometer is the most widely applied data source. Water color indicators such as chlorophyll a and suspended solid are the most widely investigated in China. Third, semiempirical method is the most commonly used inversion method. Existing studies rarely considered the anthropogenic factors, which limited the model robustness and its application in human-dominated aquatic ecosystems. Discussion and Conclusion : We concluded that, in the past several decades, China has made notable progresses in monitoring and evaluation of water quality using the remote-sensing techniques (especially in inland lakes). We proposed that further improvements would be needed in terms of temporal and spatial coverage, indicator list, the incorporation of human–nature interactions, inversion accuracy, and model generalization.

Abstract:Aquatic ecological monitoring and assessment in freshwater ecosystems centers on the effective management,protection,and sustainable utilization of freshwater resources.In the past several decades,the management policies in developed countries such as the United States and those in Europe had emphasized the ecological integrity of freshwater ecosystems.Accordingly,a series of research plans and programs had been successively launched for systematically monitoring and evaluating status of freshwater ecosystems using biological communities as core indicators.However,the monitoring and assessment systems in China are mainly based on traditional physical and chemical indices,thus lacking biological indicators to illustrate changes in ecological quality of freshwater ecosystems.Therefore,the progress of water quality improvement cannot meet the long-term goals and overall requirements of the"14th Five-Year Plan" for water environment management—a conceptual change from water pollution prevention and control to a unified framework of water resource,water ecology, and water environment（i.e.,three waters）".In this review,we systematically discussed the experience of monitoring and assessment philosophy and operational techniques and applications of watershed management in developed countries/regions,such as the United States,Australia,and European Union.In addition,we further summarized the existing works of aquatic ecological monitoring and assessment in China,analyzed key issues that restrict the current water ecological monitoring and assessment progress,and finally proposed relevant suggestions for systematically developing aquatic ecological monitoring and assessment systems in China,including protection target,management mode,monitoring network,scientific research,public participation.It would provide decision support and crucial reference for accurately assessing quality of the nationwide freshwater ecosystems and further evaluating the effectiveness of protection and restoration in China.

Abstract:Aquatic biological monitoring constitutes a pivotal foundation for the assessment of watershed ecological conditions, where the accuracy and reliability of monitoring data directly influence the outcomes of water ecological environmental quality assessments and the effectiveness of watershed water ecological management. Presently, in China, the research on quality assurance and quality control in aquatic biological monitoring is undergoing continuous improvement phases, necessitating a clarification and elaboration of the quality control requirements and quality control objectives of key links. This research summarized experiences from the construction of quality assurance and control systems in developed countries/regions, particularly in European Union and the United States. By reviewing China's foundational work and existing advancements in aquatic biological monitoring, we systematically proposed standardized construction strategies and recommendations suitable for China's current conditions. These suggestions included internal and external quality assurance and control in laboratories, the establishment of a comprehensive aquatic biological monitoring quality control database, new technology quality control proposals of artificial intelligence recognition and environmental DNA technologies, and so on. These efforts aim to provide the necessary technical support for the operationalization of aquatic biological monitoring services and the accurate assessment of changes in China's watershed ecological quality.
Heterogeneity of water quality in Huai River, China by using bio-monitoring data

Abstract:A new approach by combining bioindicators (BiI) and biotic indices (BIs) for evaluating water quality is presented in this paper. It is then applied to the Huai River Basin (HRB), China, which is well-known globally for its heavy anthropogenic influences. Results indicate that the spatial distribution of BI-indicated water quality has roughly the same pattern as that shown by BiI, but the pollution level using BI was, on average, greater than that by BiI; the northern plain area has a degraded water quality (ranging from alpha-mesosaprobic' to 'alpha-polysaprobic' in a wet season) while the southern mountain area and the southern part of the East Line of the South-North Water Transfer Project has a better water quality ('beta-mesosaprobic'). Water quality is worse in the dry season than in the wet season. We concluded that zoobenthos and zooplankton are more reliable indicators of water quality; biological indices are more sensitive to water quality but less reliable than BiI. These results will be of use in the ecological restoration of the Huai River and benefit water resource management in HRB in the future.

Abstract:Monitoring of status and trends of surface waters quality is an important method to assure sustainability of desired characteristics of aquatic environments. The monitoring and assessment of ecological integrity surveys have demonstrated the value of probability?based sampling designs, quantitative assessments of multiple biological assemblages, a suite of qualitative habitat indicators and the use of historical information. Recently, several sets of legislation worldwide have been developed, that consider water bodies as ecological systems, in order to address ecological quality or integrity of watersheds. Current monitoring and assessment of water quality in China, which is still based on amounts of chemical pollutants, such as COD, ammonia and BOD5 , has been deemed to be insufficient to adequately asses the quality of aquatic environments. Responding to this challenge, a new monitoring and assessment system is required based on ecological methodologies, which accurately represents status and trends in quality of aquatic environments. The components used in this monitoring and assessment system include hydrology, river morphology, physico?chemical parameters, ecotoxicological aspects, types and numbers of biota. Based on the results of the pilot scheme an ecological integrity index for surface waters will be established. A national coordination and management system, including methods for comprehensive monitoring of ecological integrity of surface waters in China will be initiated. The system should accurately reflect the effectiveness of governance and protection of major watersheds.

Abstract:In order to explore the zoobenthos community composition and the status of water quality in Songhua River in Harbin city, we conducted an investigation on the zoobenthos community structure in spring, summer and autumn 2008. The results showed that 60 species of zoobenthos were found totally, of which 39 species were aquatic insect Larvae, 13 species of mollusks, 7 species of annelid, 7 species of crustacean. Density variation in the scope of 26.67-3521.67 ind./m(2), biomass variation in the scope of 0.14-549.89g/m(2). And assessed water quality using the physic-chemical and biological methods, the results showed that water quality of Songhua River in Harbin city was in moderate-severe pollution state.

Abstract:This study was based on surveys of zoobenthos in the Songhua River during summer and autumn 2008 to provide baseline information for future regulations on water quality. Based on the Shannon-Weaver diversity index, the Margalef richness index, the Simpson biological index and the Goodnight-Whitely modification index, water quality was categorized based on zoobenthos assemblages. In summer, 21 species of zoobenthos were recorded: 8 aquatic insect larvae, 10 mollusks and 6 annelids. In autumn, 24 species of zoobenthos were recorded: 11 aquatic insect larvae, 9 mollusks and 4 annelids. During the summer, zoobenthos densities ranged from 16 to 3200 organisms/m2, averaging 723 organisms/m2, while biomass ranged from 0 to 106 g/m2, averaging 26 g/m2. During the autumn, zoobenthos densities ranged from 16 to 6368 organisms/m2, averaging 1321 organisms/m2. Biomass ranged from 0 to 92 g/m2, averaging 31 g/m2. The study has important practical significance, as it shows the possibility to monitor and evaluate aquatic bio-indicators reflecting the water quality of Songhua River.

Abstract:Aquatic ecosystems are the basis for human survival. Due to climate change and human activities such as water resource exploitation, water pollution, overfishing and etc., aquatic ecosystems have been seriously damaged in recent years and the conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems have become a major challenge to the world. Scientific and reasonable assessments are the basic guarantee to achieve stable, healthy and sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems. Relevant management departments attach great importance to aquatic ecosystem assessments and have launched active exploration and practice. In this context, the development of aquatic ecosystem assessment and its definition and implications were thoroughly examined. The basic concepts and applications of the most widely used aquatic ecosystem assessment methods were sorted out and analyzed by the advantages and disadvantages. With a comprehensive understanding of aquatic ecosystem assessment methods, an aquatic ecosystem health assessment based on ecological integrity in basin management was proposed. Finally, the trends of aquatic ecosystem assessment are discussed. By discussing the theories, methods and trends of aquatic ecosystem assessment with researchers and managers in related fields, this paper aims to provide theoretical support for aquatic ecosystem assessment and management in China.
The Community Structure of Zoobenthos and Bioassessment of Water Quality in the Lower Reaches of the Songhua River

Abstract:From 1999 to 2005,11 times of zoobenthos ecological investigations were carried out in the Jiangnantun section of the downstream Songhua River and the section of in its branch river,Wutonghe River.In total,39 species of zoobenthos were found,of which 21 species were aquatic insects,12 species molluses,4 species annelids and 2 species crustaceans.Significant differences in the species composition of zoobenthos were found between the two sampling sites of Jiangnantun and Wutonghe,and there were only 14 species distributing at both of the sampling sites.The zoobenthos and occurrence rates at Jiangnantun section are: Hydropsyche 100%,Gomphidae 80%,Semisulcospira amurensis 80%,Gammaridea 80%,Cloeon 60%,Caenidae 60%,Viviparus chui 60%.The zoobenthos and occurrence rates at Wutonghe section are: Semisulcospira amurensis 100%,Viviparus chui 100%,Glossiphonia sp.100%,Margarites 60%.In Wutonghe section,the density of molluses was highest,with the dominant species being Viviparus chui,while the dominant species in Jiangnantun section were aquatic insects.At the both sampling sites,the density of zoobenthos also varied significantly between the different years.The result of bioassessment of water quality revealed that the water in Wutonghe section was polluted to moderate extent during these years,while the water in Jiangnantun section was polluted to slight or moderate extent.The worse water quality in Wutonghe section was caused most possibly by the lower dissolved oxygen.
COMMUNITY STRUCTURE OF MACROZOOBENTHOS AND BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF WATER QUALITY IN THE MAINSTREAM OF HUAI RIVER

Abstract:The macrozoobenthic community structures of the mainstream of Huai Rirer were investigated in March,June,September,and December 2011.A total of 94 macrozoobenthic species from 41 families were recorded.Results showed that there was a significant temporal variation in the macrozoobenthic density (p =0.002).The maximum mean population density (332.5 ind./m2) occurred in June while the minimum population density(96.6 ind./m2) appeared in September.And yet,the temporal variation trend of biomass was not consistent with that of population densities.The maximum mean biomass (155.8 g/m2) occurred in September while the minimum biomass(40.0 g/m2) appeared in March,and there were no obvious differences among seasons.The redundancy analysis (RDA) results showed that the dissolved oxygen,salinity,total dissolved solids,temperature,and sediment types were the main environmental factors that affect the macrozoobenthic community structure.The temporal variation of Shannon-Wiener diversity index was not significant,but the Margalef richness index was showed significant seasonal variations (p =0.000).Even so,the variation trends of the two indices were highly consistent from the upstream to the downstream.Overall,the water quality of the mainstream of Huai River was evaluated at the middle-level pollution.
