Abstract:Aquatic Dipterans are a diverse assemblage of insects that make up important components of aquatic ecosystems. Because of their importance in these systems, aquatic dipterans are ideal candidates to monitor water heavy metal pollution. This review summarizes the species diversity of these insects and their potential use for monitoring heavy metal pollution. We describe the influence of heavy metal pollution on the morphological and internal structural changes of aquatic Dipteral insects. Finally, we highlight research into the biochemical and molecular markers that provide sensitive information necessary to detect the very early stages of heavy metal pollution.
Quantitative monitoring of inland water using remote sensing of the upper reaches of the Huangpu River, China

Abstract:In this paper, a quantitative framework using common and readily available remote sensing data, including ground hyperspectral data, multispectral remote sensing images and a regular in situ water quality monitoring programme, is proposed to monitor inland water quality. The entire framework has three steps: (1) collecting and processing basic data, including remote sensing data and water quality data; (2) examining the relationships between water quality parameters and water reflectance from both remote sensing images and in situ measurement data. According to their relationships with ground hyperspectral reflectance, the water quality parameters are classified into three categories, and the corresponding monitoring models using remote sensing data are presented for these three categories; and (3) analysing the spatial distribution by using water quality concentration maps generated with the monitoring models. The upper reaches of the Huangpu River were chosen as our study area to test this framework. The results show that the concentration maps inverted by the proposed models are in accordance with the actual situation. Therefore, we can conclude that the proposed framework for quantifying water quality based on multisource remote sensing data and regular in situ measurement data is an effective and economic tool for the rapid detection of changes in inland water quality and subsequent management.

Abstract:Abstract Water is a vital resource essential to the survival and development of all creatures. With the rapid growth of industry and agriculture, people face a severe threat of ecological destruction and environmental pollution while living earthly lives. Water pollution, in particular, harms people’s health the most. As a result, water supply security has become a top priority. As a critical point in water supply safety, monitoring water quality effectively and forecasting sudden water contamination on time has become a research hotspot worldwide. With the rapid development and wide applications of artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies, biological activity identification-based intelligent water quality monitoring methods have drawn widespread attention. They were taking fish activities as the water-quality indicator has gained extensive attention by introducing advanced computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies with low cost and ease of carrying. This article comprehensively reviews recent progress in the research and applications of machine vision-based intelligent water quality monitoring and early warning techniques based on fish activity behavior recognition. In detail, it addresses water quality-oriented fish detection and tracking, activity recognition, and abnormal behavior recognition-based intelligent water quality monitoring. It analyzes and compares the performance and their favorite application conditions. Finally, it summarizes and discusses the difficulties and hotspots of water quality monitoring based on the fish’s abnormal behavior recognition and their future development trends.

Abstract:The indicative function of water quality by diatom community and basic principle of diatoms index method were described.By comparison and analysis it was found the variety of diatom assemblage in quantity by mathematical methods was applied to evaluate the water pollution in the tropics and subtropics areas.Similarity index of diatom model was suitable to evaluate water pollution in the areas with stable climate.Biological diatom index had wide applicable scope and best stability.Lake eutrophication diatom index,index of nutrition,eutrophication diatom index were reliable methods for water eutrophication evaluation.At present classification and identification system of diatoms were not perfect and still manage to eliminate seasonal change on the stability of diatoms index method.

Abstract:Biomonitoring is a kind of important environment monitoring measures in the future,because of the existing problems about the method itself and technologies,the application of this measure is limited.Two techniques community monitoring and bioassay of biomonitoring were introduced in this paper,and the applications of this two methods in water environment assessment,water planning,disaster forecast,water quality monitoring,establishment of water quality standards and contamination discharge monitoring are summarized.Also,problems about technique,measure and the using of the results of biomonitoring are discussed in this article.

Abstract:Aquatic insects in lower order streams under landscapes with different vegetations in Liangshui National Natural Rserve and Maoershan Experimental Forest Farm were collected and identified to analyze the community composition,seasonal dominant concentration and foundational feeding group,in May、August and October,2006.The stream water quality was assessed by biological indicator using Shannon-Weiner diversity index,community similarity index and biotic index.Totally 4907 aquatic insect individuals were collected and identified to 38 families,8 orders.Trichoptera,Ephemeroptera,Plecoptera and Diptera were dominant groups,accounting for 91.13% of all the aquatic insects collected.Most aquatic insects were found in old growth forest streams in Liangshui,accounting for 58.98% of the total,much more than that found in second growth forest streams in Maoershan,and the least were found in farmland streams in Maoershan.The aquatic species diversity in second growth streams was greater than that in the old growth and farmland streams,and the percentages of foundational feeding group in second growth streams were more balanced.The species in Odontoceridae,Neoephemeridae and Capniidae were selected as biological indicators for high stream water quality.There was relationship between seasonal dominant concentration of aquatic insects and the assessment results for water quality with Shannon-Weiner diversity index,the species diversity reduced gradually with the increasing of water pollution level.Community similarity index indicated that the composition of aquatic insect community was not influenced by water quality in old growth and second growth streams,but moderate influence was found in farmland streams.The results of biotic index analysis suggested that water quality of all streams surveyed was good at anytime except for farmland stream which was slightly polluted in October.

Abstract:Benthic macroinvertebrates are the main components of the aquatic ecosystem and play a key role in function and health of aquatic ecosystem.With the increasing emphasis on the aquatic ecosystem management based on watershed integrity in China,the studies on aquatic ecosystem health is more and more detailed,thus the study of benthic macroinvertebrates are improved not only in depth but also in breadth.The main study tasks,impacting factors and analytical methods on benthic macroinvertebrates were summarized at home and abroad in recent years.The results indicate that the response of benthic macroinverebrates to the variation of aquatic ecosystem is significant on the spatial scale,so the effects of natural environment,habitat conditions and water quality on benthic animal diversity and its community structure in the different spatial scales were analyzed.The variations of water environment factors caused by the human activities or the damage of habitat could influence directly the species composition and community features of benthic animal according to the integrated analysis of various factors.The analytical methods on benthic animal could be classified as two types,namely,a model analytical method and a biology index assessment method.Which one is selected in the actual application depends on the features of model and index.

Abstract:Many large rivers in China have an inflow of contaminated water. Water pollution caused by urban sewage and agriculture, and occasionally pollution events from industries have become a significant stress on aquatic ecology. Pollution affects the biodiversity of the aquatic community and the species composition changes from natural species to tolerant species. The species composition of aquatic animals may reflect water pollution level. Extremely non-uniform distributions of functional feeding groups occurred as a result of high nutrient levels. A combination of chemical and biological methods constitutes the best approach for biological monitoring studies that measure water quality. Macroinvertebrates were used as bio-assessment indicator to determine the environmental quality of given water body. In this study, samples of water and macroinvertebrates were taken from several dozen sites in 14 rivers in China with different pollution levels, including the Yangtze, East, Weihe, Songhua, Yongding, and Panlong rivers. Macroinvertebrates were identified to genus or family level. Water samples were classified into different water quality grades according to the concentration of different substances. Five biological indices: taxa richness ( S ), density ( D ), total BMWQ score (t-BMWQ), average BMWQ score (a-BMWQ), and the family biotic index (FBI) were used for biological assessment of water quality. Analyzing macroinvertebrates’ occurrence in different water quality levels, taxa-specific indicators, which are defined as the taxa of macroinvertebrates that live in a certain water quality level but do not exist in other water quality levels were proposed for water quality bio-assessment. Leptophlebiidae, Siphlonuridae, Arctopsychidae, Perlidae, and Antocha sp. are the taxa-specific indicators for very good or good water quality; Chironomidae, Lymnaeidae, Tubifex sp., Limnodrilus sp., Limnoperna lacustris , Corbicula sp., Macrobrachium sp., Planorbidae, Glossiphoniidae, and Branchiura sp. are the taxa-specific indicators for very poor water quality; and Psychomyiidae and Hydroptilidae are the taxa-specific indicators for moderate water quality.

Abstract:A new approach for monitoring water quality is proposed based on quantitative remote sensing in Huangpu River, Shanghai. The data processing for multi-spectral remote sensing imagery is first presented. The inversion models for two typical water quality parameters - Dissolved oxygen (DO) and Secchi disk (SD) are then developed. Based on the derived models and multi-temporal remote sensing imagery, the spatial- temporal analysis for the water quality variation is therefore conducted. The results show that the proposed models can detect effectively the temporal and spatial distribution of water quality.

Abstract:River health received more attentions from the society since 1950s. The concept,assessment methods,scope,content and index system of river health have been expanded and improved. There are two assessment methods: integrated index assessment method and indicator species assessment method. Integrated index assessment method uses river hydrology,water quality,ecosystem and others indicators to reflect river health in a comprehensive way but has some shortcomings such as the number of indicators is hard to reduced and some indicators are not easy to be qualified. Indicator species assessment method uses fish,macroinvertebrates,planktonic algae and other indicator species to reflect river health in an intuitive way and is more commonly used in practical application.

Abstract:Macroinvertebrates as a biological indicator of aquatic health condition plays an important role in the protection and management of water ecological environment.Macroinvertebrates and water quality were investigated on the basis of samples collected at 33 sampling sites in the North Canal River Basin in May 2015.The community structure of macroinvertebrates was analyzed.The comprehensive water quality identification index and Biotic Index of macroinvertebrates were used to assess the water quality in the North Canal River Basin.The results obtained by using these two methods were compared each other by using the KolmogorovSmirnov test and Pearson correlation analysis.In this study,a total of 23 species of macroinvertebrates belonging to 3 phylum,4 class,6 order,11 family and 11 genera were identified in the North Canal River Basin,which mainly represented by aquatic insects and molluscs.The community structure of macroinvertebrates in the whole basin was simple.The result of Biotic Index showed that 72％ of the sampling sites were moderately(Ⅳ) or seriously(Ⅴ) polluted and comprehensive water quality identification index showed that more than 57％ of the sampling sites were worse than Class Ⅳ.The K-S test showed that the results were confirmed to normal distribution and Pearson correlation analysis exhibited that the results of these two methods had a significant positive correlation.The two results had the same tendency generally.Depending on the results,the water quality in the North Canal River Basin was poor.The main stream was better than the tributaries and the upstream was better than the downstream.The water quality in the upstream of the Wenyu River,the downstream of the Ba River,the upstream of the Tonghui River and the Liangshui River were poor while the headwater of the Wenyu River and the upstream of the Ba River were excellent.The result of comprehensive water quality identification index was a little better than that of Biotic Index.This was attributed to the reason that the two assessment methods focused on different spatial and temporal scales.In the North Canal River Basin with high urbanization level and strong human disturbance,the complex water ecological condition could be better understood with both assessment methods at the same time.

Abstract:This paper introduced the principles and applications of macroinvertebrate community index (MCI) and quantitative macroinvertebrate community index (QMCI) commonly used in New Zealand, and applied them to monitor and assess 53 sites in 40 rivers in Wellington region of the Country. Both MCI and QMCI were correlated with the rivers nutrients enrichment significantly, suggesting that it was possible to use the two indices to monitor and assess the nutrient pollution of water body. The MCI and QMCI could rapidly and easily assess water body quality, and the assessment showed that in Wellington region, the rivers water quality was overall good, but some of the rivers were poor in water quality. There was a significant correlation between MCI and QMCI, but, as compared with QMCI, MCI was better correlated with the rivers nutrients enrichment, and thus, recommended to be applied to assess water body quality. The aim of this paper was to introduce the related researchers in China how to use MCI and QMCI in monitoring and assessing water body quality, and gave some ideas on improving the development of biotic index with macroinvertebrates in rivers water quality assessment in China.

Abstract:Urban river not only has the important function in urban hydrological environment, but also is an area for entertainment. Water quality assessment is the core technique in water resource management. As the typical urban river, water samples were collected at 5 sampling points in Xi'an moat from January 2018 to December 2020, and 10 physicochemical parameters were analyzed. In this paper, a comprehensive water quality index (WQI) is designed based on the criterion of water quality classes and entropy weight method firstly. Secondly, the crucial water quality parameters is determined by using mutual information, coefficient of variation and the water quality difference. Finally, an enhanced beetle antennae search algorithm is proposed to optimize the weight values of the crucial parameters in the range 0 to 1, which represent the ratio of the crucial parameter in the minimum WQI (WQImin) model. The WQImin models with different number of crucial water quality parameters are implemented for water quality assessment. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed enhanced beetle antennae search algorithm are validated in comparison with other evolutionary algorithms. The results show that the proposed WQImin model can assess the water quality accurately.

Abstract:Inland waters represent complex and highly variable ecosystems, which are also of immense recreational and economic values to humans. The maintenance of high quality of inland water status necessitates development of means for rapid quality monitoring. Imaging spectrometry techniques are proven technology that can provide useful information for the estimation of inland water quality attributes due to fast speed, noninvasiveness, ease of use, and in situ operation. Although there have been many studies conducted on the use of imaging spectrometry for marine water quality monitoring and assessment, relatively few studies have considered inland water bodies. The aim of this review is to present an overview of imaging spectrometry technologies for the monitoring of inland waters including spaceborne and airborne and field or ground-based hyperspectral systems. Some viewpoints on the current situation and suggestions for future research directions are also proposed.

Abstract:Globally, urban water bodies suffer from a variety of ecological pressures which profoundly change freshwater ecosystem services and pose a great threat to aquatic biodiversity. To identify the effects of these pressures on aquatic communities, we systematically investigated the macroinvertebrates in different water types (e.g., mountain rivers, plain rivers, lakes, and reservoirs) in all water systems in Beijing, a megacity in China, to reveal the key environmental factors and response mechanisms affecting the spatial distribution of macroinvertebrate communities. A total of 188 macroinvertebrate taxa were identified at 61 survey sections, and environmental factors such as flow velocity, water depth, water temperature, and total nitrogen content were found to substantially affect the structure and spatial distribution of the macroinvertebrate communities. A multimetric index (MMI) model based on macroinvertebrates was developed to assess the ecological quality of each water type, and the developed MMI was demonstrated to be widely applicable. In the MMI, each community metric was weighted based on the goodness of fit for each biological metric and environmental metric to obtain the observed MMI values of the measured sample sites, and further model training and prediction was performed based on all sample site data. The MMI results revealed that the overall ecological quality of mountain rivers with less anthropogenic interference was relatively good (MMI = 0.62 ± 0.28), the overall ecological quality of lakes experiencing ecological disturbance and undergoing ecological restoration practices was moderate (MMI = 0.43 ± 0.09), and the overall ecological quality of plain rivers and reservoirs with strong anthropogenic interference was relatively poor (MMI = 0.24 ± 0.12 and 0.32 ± 0.12, respectively). Specific recommendations for ecological protection of different water types were formulated, providing a scientific basis and decision-making support for urban ecological planning and sustainable development.

Trichoptera,Ephemeroptera and Hemiptera were dominant groups,accounting for 58. 55% of all the aquatic insects collected.The results of Shannon-Weiner diversity index analysis suggested that water quality of all streams was good at anytime except for Xizhu stream which was slightly polluted; The results of family-level biotic index suggested that water quality of all streams was good.
