Study and Application Progress of River Health Assessment

Abstract:River health received more attentions from the society since 1950s. The concept,assessment methods,scope,content and index system of river health have been expanded and improved. There are two assessment methods: integrated index assessment method and indicator species assessment method. Integrated index assessment method uses river hydrology,water quality,ecosystem and others indicators to reflect river health in a comprehensive way but has some shortcomings such as the number of indicators is hard to reduced and some indicators are not easy to be qualified. Indicator species assessment method uses fish,macroinvertebrates,planktonic algae and other indicator species to reflect river health in an intuitive way and is more commonly used in practical application.
