Abstract:UHVDC commutation failure and DC block need to be studied in detail, for they will evidently affect the safety and stability of AC power grid Firstly, the main circuit and control system are studied and analyzed in depth. Then, the simulation model is established in PSCAD software. After that, the curves of commutation failure and DC block in different cases are obtained Finally, the correctness of this simulation platform is verified by comparison of some recording curves.

Abstract:Analysis of a microgrid via small-signal stability method is well established. However it only depicts the system dynamics around the equilibrium point. To fully investigate the behavior of a microgrid, the phase-plane method should be adopted. In the paper, the state space model of a simplified microgrid under PQ control mode is established. The phase diagrams under three types of load are studied respectively with the help of PSCAD/EMTDC. Some ways to stabilize the system are proposed at last.

Abstract:Because of some components included the distribution network configuration are asymmetrical, it's hard to analyze the asymmetrical faults in a symmetrical system by the symmetrical component method. The electrical characteristics of the asymmetrical components in power systems can be exactly described by the models based on the co-ordinate phase. The co-ordination phase models are applied to represent the asymmetry of parameters and framework in distribution network in this paper. A lot of simulating study and theory analysis are realized by using NETOMAC which is a powerful simulating software applied in power systems. Some interesting conclusions are made for the quantitative analysis of distribution system faults.

Abstract:A power flow method based on graph theory is presented for three-phase balanced distribution systems. The graph theory is used to describe the power network and facilitate the derivation of the relationship between bus Currents and the bus Voltage Bias from the feeder bus (the CVB equation). A distinctive feature of the CVB equation is its unified form for both radial and meshed networks. The method requires neither a tricky numbering and layering of nodes nor breaking meshes and loop-analysis, which are both necessary in previous works for meshed networks. The convergence of the proposed method is proven using the Banach fixed-point theorem.

Abstract:Because of the existence of asymmetrical parameters and unbalanced loads,a power system may operate in an unbalanced state even if there is no fault in the system.A new three-phase power-flow method for asymmetrical power systems power flow calculation is presented.This method uses a hybrid approach with symmetrical components and phase components to model the system,and solves the power flow through decomposition and coordination algorithms.The algorithm proposed combines the flexibility of phase component method and the efficiency of symmetrical component method.It is suitable for power flow and fault calculation of transmission systems as well as high/medium voltage distribution systems.Three IEEE standard systems with different size and a real system are used for case study.Test results show that the method proposed has high accuracy and convergence,and has low sensitivity to the system unbalance.

Abstract:Distribution three-phase four wire power systems are undergoing significant evolutions in physical and technical features as a result of the large-scale integration of rooftop solar photovoltaics. For such multi-converter power systems, the occurred oscillation issues usually involve a variety of components. In addition, the intertwined relationship between dual frequency coupling effect and sequence components coupling effect complicates the analysis processes and makes the existing analysis results not suitable. To analyze the oscillation characteristics accurately of such system, this paper proposes a quantitative analysis method of oscillation mode based on the admittance network model, which considers dual frequency coupling effect, sequence components coupling effect and their intertwined relationship. In addition, a method to calculate the accurate characteristic roots effectively and flexibly based on a partitioned interval ant colony algorithm is also proposed. Finally, the node oscillation participation factor and oscillation mode sensitivity are defined to reveal the oscillation characteristics and laws of the three-phase four-wire grid-connected systems. The time-domain simulations results implemented in MATLAB/Simulink validate the analytical results.

Abstract:This paper presents a uniform approach for power flow and fault analysis of asymmetrical three-phase distribution system. Based on the forward and backward sweep method, a polished hybrid compensation approach is developed. A uniform compensation circuit model is also given for all kind of faults. The proposed algorithm can be applied in both normal and short circuit conditions, and their computation formulas and iteration steps are completely same. The detailed load model is also accomplished in this method. The paper also includes a test results from the application of a computer program developed based on the proposed methods.

Abstract:Power converter plays a very important role in switched reluctance motor (SRM) systems, and it is also the easiest one to experience failures. Power converter faults will cause the motor to run in non equilibrium states, and a long time fault operation will lead to motor and other modules damaged, and make the system completely lose working stability. This paper uses an asymmetric bridge converter as the research object with three-phase SRM, employs the wavelet packet decomposition for the phase currents. It analyzes and studies the short circuit fault condition of IGBT, uses an energy discrete degree of the wavelet packet nodes as the fault characteristic, and conducts the corresponding experimental and simulation analysis to verify the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed method.

Abstract:The grid power distribution network (PDN) is an essential component in electronic packages to provide the dc power to circuits. In this paper, an integral equation hybrid method is proposed for the efficient calculation of the impedance of the complex grid PDN. First, the original 3-D grid PDN is reduced to a simple 2-D plane PDN. Both of them have the same input and mutual parasitic impedances. After that, this equivalent plane PDN is solved by using the 2-D integral equation method to consider its arbitrary shape. By comparing between the obtained impedances from the proposed method, full-wave method, and measurement, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method is verified. The proposed method provides a simple and useful electronics design automation tool for the power integrity analysis of complex circuits.
Mechanism and peak value calculation of AC tie-line power swing caused by DC blocking

Abstract:The AC tie-line power swing caused by DC blocking is actually a step disturbance problem, which, because the DC blocking excites the oscillation mode between two interconnected power grids, should be studied with the second-order system step response theory. Since the step disturbance power excited by the interior DC blockings is different from that by the exterior DC blocking, the mechanism of AC tie-line power swings excited by different DC blockings are studied separately. The approximate calculation of AC tie-line power swing peak is given and its influential factors are summarized. The AC tie-line power swing peak is calculated respectively by the proposed approximate calculation and the power system simulation software for a real UHV interconnected power grid, which verifies the feasibility and correctness of the proposed calculation method.
Fault Component Analysis in Super-Imposed Networks

Abstract:An algorithm was developed to analyze fault components in complex power systems. The network equations described super-imposed networks with boundary conditions for the fault components at the fault point. The equations were solved with Newton's method. The algorithm has clear physical meaning and does not contain an intermediate procedure to derive fault components from post-fault quantities. The calculated results show that the algorithm is fast and accurate. The method can not only be used to analyze the fault components in complex power systems with simple or multiple faults, but can also be used to analyze the performance of protective relays and other automatic devices based on fault components.

Abstract:According to the research on the defect of zero sequence current and negative sequence current faulty phase selection, and the analysis of the different phase relation of zero sequence voltage and negative sequence voltage when the system has two phase fault or single phase fault, a new faulty phase selecting scheme making up of the zero sequence voltage, negative sequence voltage and positive sequence voltage is put forward in this paper. The principle is simple and can select faulty phase correctly and unfailingly, not only for the normal fault, but also for the transferring fault, and the cross over fault on double circuit tower. It meets the demand of ultra high voltage line protection.

Abstract:DC symmetrical component method is introduced for analysis and control of bipolar dc distribution systems under asymmetrical operation. This method is an extension of the classical symmetrical component theory in three-phase ac power systems. The asymmetrical voltage and current in the positive and negative poles are decomposed into symmetrical components in common and differential modes. The equivalent circuit for each mode is derived, which forms decoupled mode networks. Consequently, it allows for independent investigation of each mode, and provides an insightful view of the static and dynamic behavior of a bipolar dc power system. The theoretical conclusions are verified by experimental results.

Abstract:While a short circuit fault happens in a power substation, it is the current diffusing into ground that actually causes the safeness trouble instead of the fault current. Most of the current numerical methods and software are required to cross the technical threshold, or have limitations in characterizing the power system. The paper presented a numerical method to calculate the shunt coefficient for the complex power system with different voltage levels, and derived the admittance matrix for a phase-coordinate transformer model which is applicable for the loop current method. The method was verified by comparison with commercial software CDEGS. It has been applied to analyzing the effect of the transformer, and the result shows that the transformer is an essential system component for the calculation of shunt coefficient.

Abstract:Accurate fault calculation is vital for the parameter design and protection research of high-voltage DC (HVDC) grids. This paper proposes a general method to calculate short-circuit faults in HVDC grids, and the method is based on the premise that the modular multilevel converter (MMC) blocking and the current interruption have not occurred. The MMC is based on the average value model, and the MMC current source can reflect the impacts of the AC system and MMC control mode. The fault calculations based on variable and constant MMC current sources are presented. The numerical inversion of the Laplace transform is used to obtain the voltages and currents in the time domain. The proposed method has the following merits: 1) it can accurately calculate voltages and currents while considering the fault-generated traveling wave effect and impacts of the AC system and MMC control mode; 2) it is more time efficient than the electromagnetic transient simulation; and 3) it is applicable to HVDC grids with different configurations, such as symmetrical bipolar and asymmetrical monopolar. The proposed method is validated by comparisons with previous calculation methods and PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

Abstract:The 12-phase synchronous generator-rectifier system is widely used in mobile platforms that require high system security. In the system, the stator internal short circuit is a kind of common fault that may compromise the security of the generator. This paper gives detailed analysis on the internal phase-to-phase short-circuit faults, including the faults within the same group of Y-connected phases and those between different groups of Y-connected phases in the 12-phase system. A multiloop mathematical model is built to calculate all the voltages and currents when the faults occur in the system. In the model, the additional short-circuit loop between different phases, as well as the fault effects on both the air-gap magnetic field and the circuit topology of the system, are taken into account. Then a series of fault experiments are carried out on a 12-phase model machine. In view of the good agreement of experiment and simulation results, the effectiveness of the mathematical model and the simulation method is confirmed. Finally, the electric characteristics of the internal phase-to-phase short-circuit faults are summarized, and the fault mechanism is revealed.

Abstract:In order to improve the efficiency of the cascading failure analysis,static equivalence method of AC /DC power grid is studied. First of all,the DC line is converted to AC parameters,then the extended ward equivalent method is used to reduce external grid. Based on the equivalent impedance and power provided by existing equivalent methods,the capacity and failure rate of equivalent devices are given in this paper. The AC equivalent impedance method and the equivalent load method,which are used to deal with the HVDC,are compared. And the proposed method was validated by IEEE 118 system for the effectiveness of cascading failure analysis.

Abstract:Symmetrical monopolar configuration is the prevailing scheme configuration for modular multilevel converter based high-voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) links, in which severe DC overvoltage or overcurrent can be caused by the DC faults. To deal with the possible asymmetry in the DC faults and the coupling effects of the DC lines, this paper analyzes the DC fault characteristics based on the phase-mode transformation. First, the DC grid is decomposed into the common-mode and the differential-mode networks. The equivalent models of the MMCs and DC lines in the two networks are derived, respectively. Then, based on the state matrices, a unified numerical calculation method for the fault voltages and currents at the DC side is proposed. Compared with the time-domain simulations performed on PSCAD/EMTDC, the accuracy of the proposed method is validated. Last, the system parameter analysis shows that the grounding parameters play an important role in reducing the severity of the pole-to-ground faults, whereas the coupling effects of the DC lines should be considered when calculating the DC fault currents associated with the pole-to-pole faults.

Abstract:Due to the widespread proliferation of distributed generation resources and the current market situation, ensuring the security and reliability of power grids against fault events has become a more challenging task. The aim of this paper is to compare different power flow techniques for power grid vulnerability assessment against symmetrical fault incidents using bus impedance matrix. In this study, first, the relationship of the post-fault voltage phasor at each bus with the pre-fault voltage phasors at that bus and the faulted bus, impedance matrix elements, and fault impedance is investigated through power system analysis under pre-fault and post-fault circumstances. Subsequently, the accuracy of different iterative and non-iterative power flow algorithms, i.e. Newton Raphson (NR), Fast Decoupled (FD), and Direct Current (DC) methods, for the power grid vulnerability assessment is compared. To achieve this, the fault analysis at each bus is performed commencing with a very large fault impedance and ending with the fault impedance at which one of the buses reaches the low voltage violation limit. Finally, to appraise the proposed strategy, several simulations have been undertaken on IEEE 14 bus system using MATLAB software. The simulation results indicate that the power grid vulnerability against symmetrical faults is highly influenced by the type of applied power flow technique.
