Abstract:In the conventional fault location method,the fault section is first identified,and then,three-terminal lines are converted into two-terminal to calculate the fault location.However,when the fault occurs nearby the T-connection point,particularly in the case of high resistance grounding,the method cannot identify the fault section precisely and has a dead band.To overcome the shortcoming,this paper presents a new fault location method for teed lines,assuming the fault occurs at each of the three branches respectively,then calculating the teed node voltage and current flowing to the assumed fault branch.In the three fault distances calculated,the only one greater than zero and less than the corresponding branch length is for the real faulty branch.The proposed method can locate faults without having to identify the fault section first and can accurately locate the faults occurring near the teed node through large resistance.The fault location accuracy is independent of the fault resistance and fault type in theory.In addition,pre-fault data or filter is not required.Simulation results with EMTP indicate that the method is correct and accurate.

Abstract:A new method of accurate fault location for EHV cable with transmission line is presented. Based on the proposed criterion, the method can discriminate the fault happened in EHV cables from transmission lines, then the fault location can be determined by using the variation of voltage and current obtained from both ends of the connecting lines. The method is also suitable for more complex system such as EHV transmission line-cable-transmission line with only a little changes in the criterion. Simulation results show that the proposed new method does not depend on the data synchronization at both ends of the line and can provide accurate result even if the source impedances and fault resistance are different. The proposed method is easy to implement without false-root identification.

Abstract:All of the fault location methods currently used for teed lines need to identify the fault section first,then convert the three-terminal line to a two-terminal line to locate the fault.The fact that while the fault occurs near the teed node,especially through a large resistance,the fault location methods currently used can’t identify the fault section correctly,thus fail to locate the fault was pointed out.Considering the above,a new fault location method for teed lines,which makes use of the pure resistive characteristic of fault impedance is presented.This method breaks the mold of traditional methods that it must identify the fault section before locating the fault.The proposed method can locate the fault without identifying the fault section first.And this method doesn’t have dead zone of fault location,it can accurately locate the fault occurring near the teed node.The accuracy is independent of fault resistance and fault type.Above all,this method perfectly solves the disadvantage of currently used methods that there is a dead zone of fault location near the teed node.Results of EMTP based simulation indicate that this method is correct and accurate.

Abstract:A new accurate fault location technique for an underground power cable combined with an extra high voltage (EHV) transmission line is described in this paper. The analysis shows that the negative sequence voltages at the fault point and at the junction have different characteristics when the fault occurs in the overhead line or in the power cable, which can be used to discriminate the faulted section. In the selected section, the developed method, based on distributed parameters, could ensure high location precision. The new technique is suitable for both cable-overhead line (CO) and overhead-cable-overhead (OCO) transmission system. Considering the influence of the shunt capacitance and the distributed parameter, the method can obtain high accuracy. At the same time, the precision will not be affected by the fault resistance and unsynchronized data, thus, it also has a high reliability. The new fault location system is developed and the practical implementation is also demonstrated. Test results based on simulation and field data show its high precision under different conditions.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that traditional T-type line fault location method is not able to determine the correct fault section and leading to a dead zone,especially when the transition resistance is high,this paper proposes a new fault location method using pure resistance character of transition impedance and using proof by contradiction to determine the fault section when fault occurs near the T node.The PSCAD simulation results indicate that the theory of the method is correct and without dead zone;the location precision is high and not influenced by the fault type,fault distance and transition impedance.

Abstract:With significant technological advancements in power grids, three-core cables are widely employed for their safety and other benefits. In general, three-core cables in medium-voltage distribution systems are laid underground during operation. As a result, the harsh working environment and complex fault conditions can bring massive challenges to fault location issues. To address the problem, the distinctive cable features are extensively considered in this article, including relatively larger capacitance, cable shield effects, and shield bonding methods. Initially, an equivalent cable model is developed to analyze the relationship between shield-grounding wire currents and the fault point. A single-phase grounding fault location method is then formulated based on the ratio of shield-grounding wire currents at both terminals. In power systems computer aided design/electro magnetic transient in DC system (PSCADEMTDC), a range of fault scenarios are simulated to verify the proposed method. In comparison to conventional similar approaches, the proposed method exhibits higher accuracy and robustness to fault resistance and diverse fault conditions. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated on a real 10 kV distribution network experimental platform under several fault scenarios.

Abstract:The HVDC line fault location methods at home and abroad are surveyed in this paper.Firstly,the disadvantage of the existing fault location techniques of HVDC transmission line is analyzed,and it is point out that the engineering applications of fault location of HVDC transmission line are based on traveling wave principle at present.The fault location principle is relatively simple,requiring high sampling rate,and its tolerance ability of high resistance is not sufficient.Making use of the dividing method of fault location principle of AC transmission line,the fault location principle of HVDC transmission line is classified and studied.The HVDC transmission line fault location methods are divided into traveling wave method and fault analysis method.Furthermore,the advantages and disadvantages of each fault location principles of HVDC transmission line are reviewed respectively and it is pointed out that fault analysis method has broad application prospects.Finally,several important problems which need to be further studied are proposed.

Abstract:A new fault location algorithm based on the distributed parameter transmission line model is proposed.The method is not affected by the saturation of current transformers or failures/deformation of current signal at one terminal.The voltage and current profiles along a transmission line are calculated by using sequential network models,the two terminal voltages and the currents from the unsaturated end.Since fault impedance is of pure resistance,the fault can be accurately located at where the phase angle between the voltage and current is zero.Results of ATP-EMTP based simulation prove that the method is correct and efficient.

Abstract:A new fault location algorithm for transmission line with multi terminals is proposed. Firstly, a new index for the unbalance of nodal current is defined, and it is proved that such a nodal current unbalance only appears at the node connected with the faulty line; secondly, utilizing the peculiarity of the defined index that nonzero elements only exist in the admittance matrix of the node connected with the faulty line and based on the assumption of nodal voltage, a fault identification method is proposed to judge the faulty branch rapidly and locate the fault accurately; finally, the complex fault location algorithm is turned into the solution of quadratic equation. A lot of simulative experiments show that above-mentioned method can solve the fault location of transmission line with multi branches efficiently and accurately.

Abstract:Accurate fault location with a short data window is crucial and challenging for cable faults in the modular multilevel converter high voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) system. Aiming at this issue, this paper proposes a frequency-domain fault location method, which accurately and comprehensively addresses the frequency dependency and unbalance of the parameter matrices without any approximation while considering the distributed parameters. Firstly, the frequency-domain decoupling is analyzed for DC cables with the metallic sheath and armor grounded at two terminals. Secondly, a method is proposed to calculate the voltage distribution along the cable using voltages and currents at one side of the cable based on the numerical Laplace transform (NLT). Subsequently, the cable parameter calculation method suitable for the NLT is presented, and a multi-round iterative algorithm for voltage distribution calculation is proposed. Ultimately, the complete fault location scheme is presented. Extensive simulations validate that the proposed method can achieve fault location with minor errors using a 20 kHz sampling rate and a 4 ms data window. Besides, high accuracy is maintained even under the influence of large fault impedance and noise. Compared to existing methods, the approach exhibits lower fault location error while requiring less computational complexity.

Abstract:The overhead-cable hybrid transmission lines are alternately connected by two types of lines, with a more complex structure and higher difficulty in fault location. This paper presents an ac-curate fault location method for overhead-cable hybrid lines based on traveling wave energy. Firstly, the basic concept of traveling wave energy is defined. Based on the attenuation charac-teristics of the traveling wave, the mapping relationship between traveling wave energy and fault location is analyzed. Secondly, considering the influence of S-transform error on the traveling wave energy propagation law, the traveling wave energy attenuation characteristics of common A-type and B-type hybrid lines are analyzed. Then, for the overhead-cable hybrid lines with different structures, the mapping relationship between the traveling wave energy at both ends of the line and the fault distance is quantitatively derived, and an accurate fault location method based on the initial traveling wave energy ratio at the same frequency at both ends of the line is proposed. Finally, a 110 kV hybrid transmission line fault simulation model is built in PSCAD/EMTDC, and the faults under different conditions are simulated in different line sections. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method are verified through the simulation.

Accurate Single-Ended Fault Location for Cable-OHL Hybrid Transmission Lines

Abstract:This paper proposes two single-ended fault location methods for cable - overhead line (OHL) hybrid transmission lines. Three phase voltage and current phasors at only the local terminal are required. First, the well-known Eriksson fault location method is modified as the proposed method 1, to improve the fault location performance in this situation, where the lumped parameter line model is adopted. Afterward, the fully distributed parameter line model is considered in the proposed method 2, to further enhance the accuracy of line model; the fault location can be solved via the Newton’s iterative methods. In numerical experiments, the two proposed methods present higher accuracy of fault location than the traditional Eriksson method, with various fault types, fault locations and fault resistances. The proposed method 2 demonstrates the highest fault location accuracy among all three methods.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of low accuracy of current uhv transmission line fault location method, a fault area location method based on transient recording technology is proposed. According to the principle of transient wave recording, fault collector of transmission line is designed to collect fault data. The fault signal collected by wavelet scale decomposition is used to determine the time when the fault traveling wave head reaches the detection point. Calculate the traveling wave velocity of the fault, and calculate the distance between the fault point and the detection point based on the arrival time of the wave head, so as to locate the fault area of uhv transmission line. Through the comparison with the current line fault location method, it is proved that the proposed fault area location method for uhv transmission line based on transient recording technology can effectively improve the fault location accuracy of the line by nearly twice, and is worth popularizing.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel fault location principle for HVDC transmission lines using two terminal data. Based on a distributed parameter model, the voltage distributions are calculated by the voltage and current measured in each terminal, respectively. And the fault can be located by the calculated voltage distributions. The algorithm performed in the time domain needs a very short data window and has satisfactory accuracy in practice. The effectiveness of the algorithm proposed is verified using the field data and the simulation data by the frequency-dependent line model in PSCAD. The results show that any fault of the HVDC transmission line can be located quickly and accurately.

Abstract:A novel fault location method using single terminal data is proposed.It's different from those based on the traveling wave theory.It can be applied to high voltage direct current(HVDC) transmission lines.Based on the distributed parameter model,the voltage and current distributions can be calculated using the voltage and current measured in the local terminal.According to the calculated distribution voltage and current over the line,transition resistor can be computed and the fault can be located according to the principle that the variance of the calculated transition resistor is minimum at the fault point.The algorithm,which is performed in time domain,needs a very short data window and can achieve satisfactory accuracy.Simulation results show that the fault of HVDC transmission lines can be located quickly and accurately with the proposed method.

Abstract:Diagnostic methods for fault location in cable insulation have become increasingly vital with the development of long-distance cables. This article presents an improved method for fault location based on the complex reflection coefficient spectrum (CRCS). First, a mathematical model for a long high-voltage cable line with consideration of a distribution-parameter circuit of cable joints is established in the frequency domain, and the CRCS of the cable with joints is analyzed. Next, based on the principle of frequency domain reflectometry (FDR), an algorithm in time-frequency conversion which uses the CRCS as the analysis spectrum is proposed. And the positioning sensitivity of the method is improved by implementing a data process adopting a Chebyshev window function which is controllable and reduces the sidelobe effect effectively. Furthermore, the improved method is evaluated by performing the simulations and two field verification tests. In a field test for a 5.1-km-long 110 kV cable, the multiple cable joints could be located effectively, and the relative error is between 0.14% and 1.49%. Then, the method was conducted for the positioning of a high-resistance fault and multiple joints on a 2.7-km-long 110 kV cable and the relative error is 0.37%. It is worth noting that the cross-bonding links of both cable tests were artificially replaced with temporary links straight across each joint. For the cross-bonded cable system, the test result shows that an obvious reflection is found at the cross-bonding point, which can reduce the reliability and accuracy of the present method.

Abstract:When a high impedance grounding fault occurs in the power cables, the current at the fault point is extremely low and the fault characteristics are too weak to be detected by the reflectometry. Interfered by the multiple reflections, the fault is hard to be located in the field. In order to solve the problem of conventional frequency domain reflectometry, a high impedance grounding fault location method for 10 kV distribution cables is proposed in this paper, which is based on the reflection coefficient spectrum. Firstly, the equivalent model of cable distributed parameters is established, and the reflection coefficient spectrum at the cable head is derived. Then, according to the theorem of integral transformation and generalized orthogonality, the diagnostic function is built in the spatial domain. Besides, the Kaiser window is introduced to improve the location sensitivity. Finally, the feasibility of the method is verified by simulated and experimental results. It is shown that this method can effectively eliminate the impact of multiple reflections, and precisely locate the single- and multi-point grounding faults. The fault location error is within 0.2%. Abstract:As a great number of power cables are in operation,corresponding fault ratio about these cables increases along with the time they serve and other reasons,which inevitably bring about power outage and tremendous economic loss.Consequently,it is urgent to eliminate the faults as quick as possible.However,it needs to comprehend the property of cables' faults because of the lay-out characteristics of cables.The causes of cables' faults are analyzed from different aspects,and a further study is also introduced about the types of faults depending on cable materials,the location where the fault occurs and measurements based on the traveling wave theory.Meanwhile,some upto-date on-line detection techniques and the precise methods according to location processes of cable fault localization are mainly discussed,especially the location methods based on the wavelet transform.Equipments applied in power cable fault location as well as the difference between civil apparatus and foreign counterparts are discussed.At last,this paper presents its prospect about the tendency of the power cable fault location. A Novel Single-Ended Fault Location Method for Locating Double-Phase to Earth Faults

Abstract:To accurately locate the fault position on the EHV transmission line, the impact of distributed capacitance cannot be ignored. A novel fault location method for locating double-phase to earth faults occurred on the transmission line is presented based on the distributed parameter model of the transmission line. In this method, only the voltage and current of single end are used. The residual phase voltage at the fault point should have the same phase angle as the current through fault branch due to the pure resistive characteristics of the fault path impedance. By virtue of searching the minimum phase angle difference between the phase voltage along the transmission line and the fault-component current measured by the protection, the fault distance can be located. It should be pointed out that the algorithm is based on power-frequency voltages and currents. Therefore, it can be implemented in the existing protection devices easily. EMTDC based simulation model is used to generate the data to verify the proposed fault location algorithm. The test results are satisfactory in terms of engineering applications.
