Abstract:The polymer industry in China has developed rapidly over the past 30 years, which can be greatly attributed to the active R&D conducted by Chinese scholars in polymer reaction engineering (PRE) and their cultivation of high level talents. The research focus on PRE in China has shifted from the application development to both applied and fundamental research at present. The PRE researchers closely collaborate with the enterprises and the world leading scholars. The research objective has been evolved from optimizing efficiency of polymerization processes to precise control of the structures of polymer chains and primary aggregates. This essay summarizes the history, characteristics, and latest progresses of the PRE research in China, with emphasis on the research activities at Zhejiang University.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the domestic economy, China’s infrastructure construction has also maintained rapid growth. Some major projects have been proposed immediately, not only does it have a huge demand for concrete, but it also has very high demands on the quality of concrete. Concrete admixtures are chemical substances added to concrete. Reasonable use of admixtures can effectively improve the properties of concrete. In recent years, with the continuous improvement of the quality requirements of concrete in the construction industry and advances in chemical technologies, many new chemical materials have been used in concrete admixtures, and it has become necessary to study the effect of admixtures in concrete. The types of admixtures are various. In this paper, the effects of antifreeze, hardener and compound admixtures in concrete are explored, which provides technical guidance for the application of admixtures in concrete.

Abstract:Considering the viscosity character of mixing systems and the application limitation of traditional mixers,developing a mixer with broad adaptability to viscosity becomes necessary.Based on introducing the type,structural character and application range of both single-bladed mixer and dual-shaft mixer with broad adaptability to viscosity,their research progress at home and abroad was summarized and their advantages and disadvantages were analyzed.Comparing the single-bladed mixer with the dual-shaft mixer makes their development trend clear and shows that selecting the mixer with broad adaptability to viscosity has to consider medium properties,the device's complexity in structure,the power consumption and the mixing performance.
Progress on agitated apparatus for polymer devolatilization and its CFD simulation

Abstract:The progress on new types of agitated apparatus for polymer devolatilization was reviewed, while the key issues on the development of new devolatilization devices were analyzed. The characteristics of flow field,mixing,film forming and surface renewal are the key factors to strengthen the mass transfer process. Developing highly efficient and self-cleaning devices for polymer devolatilization is the major prospect in this field. The applications of computational fluid mechanics (CFD) simulations on transfer process in such devices were also discussed. Finite element method combined with mesh superposition technique(MST) and finite volume method combined with dynamic mesh technique have been used to deal with problems such as complex geometric blades and fins,twin-shaft rotating motion,tiny gaps within engaged areas and so on. Gas-liquid interface can be precisely tracked by means of volume of fluid(VOF) multiphase flow model. The film forming and surface renewal characteristics can be investigated,which contributes to learn more about the mass transfer mechanism. CFD numerical simulation offers a new idea for designing highly efficient devices for polymer devolatilization.

Abstract:Agitation is an unit progress commonly used in process industry.In this article,the development of mixing equipment design was summarized.The current design methods for mixing equipment can be classified as the design based on classical design manual, research design with the combination of expertise and experiment and the design based on CFD,all of which were described and analyzed herein.It was indicated that the optimum design of mixing equipment need to emphasize the effective coupling of characteristics in process and equipment,and it was also pointed that the intellectual design based on computer network is the trend of mixing equipment design.

Abstract:Automatic Control system has been widely used in the field of modern chemical production industry,which not only enhances the automatic level of production device but also elevates products' quality and output.A method combining manufacture process monitoring system and PLC is presented,through which automatic control system of a set of device for latex polymerization is developed and automatic control and monitoring function of the whole manufacture process are realized.For the key factor influencing quality best-polymerization temperature,cascade with stroke-dividing control algorithm is applied.Through long-term practical running,control effect reaches the expectation,which demonstrates the feasibility of this control system.

Abstract:In recent years many activities have been focused on the microchemical engineering process for the minimization of chemical engineering.The present work is spent doing development and research on micromixers and their performance.The application prospect of the micromixers in the chemical reaction,separation process and heat transfer is discussed.The advantages of higher efficiency,less contact time,low energy consumption,easy operation and control,simple equipment and better safety is concluded,while the disadvantages lie in the higher processing cost,low capacity and clean system requirement are analyzed.It is pointed out that to develop higher and newer microprocessing techniques and to develop micromixers capable of handling solid materials with a big production capacity and self-cleaning is in urgent need.

Abstract:A coal slurry mixing tank is a key piece of equipment in the preparation of coal slurry for direct coal liquefaction. It is a gas-liquid-solid three-phase mixing device. Based on the performance of the existing coal slurry mixing equipment, a type of test equipment for horizontal continuous coal slurry preparation was developed, but to this point has limited research results. The test equipment consists of a mixing cylinder, mixer, stirring impeller and other components. Slurry mixing experiments were undertaken using the prototype, testing the performance of the device. A mathematical model was proposed specifically for the operation of a coal slurry mixing tank that is horizontally operated with high slurry concentration and rotary flow. The flow field in the horizontal coal mixing tank was simulated with the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) method. The experimental results match well with the CFD simulation results. Results show that the test device of a coal slurry mixing tank can be used to model the mixing of pulverized coal and the solvent oil. A strong correlation was obtained.

Abstract:The performance of natural rubber (NR), a naturally occurring and sustainable material, can be greatly enhanced by adding different fillers to the NR matrix. The homogeneous dispersion of fillers in the NR matrix is a key factor in their ability to reinforce. As a novel method, wet mixing technology may effectively provide good filler dispersion in the NR matrix while overcoming the drawbacks of conventional dry mixing. This study examines the literature on wet mixing fillers, such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, silica, carbon black, and others, to prepare natural rubber composites. It also focuses on the wet preparation techniques and key characteristics of these fillers. Furthermore, the mechanism of filler reinforcement is also examined. To give guidance for the future development of wet mixing technology, this study also highlights the shortcomings of the current system and the urgent need to address them.

Abstract:China has enjoyed a rapid economic development in the past 20 years. Many mega-scale infrastructures, including subways, high-speed railways, highways, hydraulic facilities and so on, have been/are being constructed. Many of these infrastructures are on/in soft soils with high groundwater level improved with soil-cement mixing technologies, e.g. deep mixing and/or jet-grouting. This paper presents the recent 10-years of development in soil mixing technologies in China including deep mixing and jet-grouting methods and their case histories for the infrastructure construction. Recent research activities and findings including theoretical and technological developments are presented. More attention is paid to the development of a jet-grouting technology using two types of binders in the soft sandy deposit in Shanghai. The theoretical development includes a strength acquiring model of soil-cement admixture and a soil eroding theory for jet-grouting.

Abstract:The influence of different mixing processes on material properties. Compared to the traditional open mixing process used for the production of the rubber composites, wet mixing process is a lower shear force mixing method. This article revealed the influence of the open mixing process and the wet mixing process on the microstructure, density, mechanical properties, and ablation performance of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber/fiber/hollow glass microsphere composite system. The results showed that the wet mixing process increased the fiber length by more than 300% compared to the open mixing process, while the fragmentation rate of the hollow glass beads was reduced by 94.4%, these effectively maintained the structural integrity of the fibers and the hollow glass microsphere filler. By using the wet mixing process, the density of EPDM composite materials can be reduced by about 20%, and the tensile strength and ablation resistance of these composites were also significantly improved. Compared to polyimide fiber and aramid fiber short fibers, the wet mixing process of solution‐based rubber had a more significant effect on improving the length and ablation resistance of phenolic fiber and carbon fiber fibers which having poor shear strength.
