Abstract:In order to study the physicochemical properties of ethanol extracts from Northeast-China black bee propolis (EENBP),the chemical compositions and characteristic spectra of the extracts were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy,ultraviolet (UV)spectroscopy,infrared (IR) spectroscopy,gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS),and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the EENBP obtained by ultrasonic assisted extraction (EENBPUA) had a more uniform distribution compared with that of EENBP.Analysis of UV and IR spectra showed that EENBPUA contained flavonoids,terpenes,esters,phenolic acids,and alcohols,among other components.GC-MS results showed that the main volatiles in EENBPUA were terpene compounds,including germacrene,cadinene,guaiol,and selinene.Seven compounds,including benzaldehyde,caffeic acid,p-coumaric acid,ferulic acid,chrysin,isorhamnetin,and kaempferol were identified by LC/MS from the EENBPUA.These findings suggest that the active components of EENBPUA are abundant and EENBP can be used for further development of healthy food and drugs with corresponding functions.

Abstract:Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources. On account of its chemical composition, propolis possesses several biological and pharmacological properties. In recent years, many papers have provided information concerning its composition. This review compiles data from most studies of propolis, focusing on the chemical composition of ethanol extracts of propolis (EEP), water extracts of propolis (WEP), and volatile oils from propolis (VOP). The characteristic compounds of EEP are polyphenols including flavonoids and related phenolic acids, and flavonoids are the most abundant and effective parts. They are considered to contribute more to the antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant effects than the other constituents. The main flavonoids in EEP are pinocembrin, galangin, chrysin, quercetin, kaempferol, and naringenin. The constituents reported to be in WEP include phenolic acids, caffeoylquinic acid, 3-mono-O-caffeoylquinic acid, caffeic acid, flavonoids, etc. The propolis volatile compounds are benzyl alcohol, benzyl acetate, cinnamic alcohol, vanillin, eudensmol, cyclohexyl benzoate, and benzyl benzoate, which are responsible for several biological properties. As a natural mixture, propolis is widely used in medicine and cosmetics, as well as being a constituent of health foods. Since propolis has been used extensively, information on its composition is not only of interest to the academic field, but also to propolis users.

Abstract:The antioxidant activities, polyphenol acid and flavonoid contents were discussed in this article, and studied the relationship between polyphenol acid and an- tioxidant activity. Furthermore, measured the main chemi- cal constituents of propolis collected in various geo- graphic origins. The results showed that antioxidant activ- ities of propolis from different areas were different, and the content of polyphenol acid and flavonoid were also different, and there existed some positive correlation be- tween polyphenol and antioxidant activities. The main chemical constituents of propolis of various areas had great significant different, which indicated that propolis had complex chemical constituents, and antioxidant activi- ties of propolis of various areas were the results of syn- ergistic effect of multiple constituents.

Abstract:Propolis is an adhesive substance mixed with plant resins collected by honeybees (Apis mellifera) and secretions from their mandibular gland and wax gland, with wide pharmacological activity and healthcare functions. Its antioxidant activity has long been regarded as one of the most important biological activities of propolis. This article summarizes studies on the antioxidant activity of propolis extracts from different geographic origins and with different extraction methods, as well as several important monomer active ingredients in propolis, and concludes the potential molecular mechanism of antioxidant activity of propolis and its monomer ingredients, with the aim of providing ideas for further studies on pharmacological activity of propolis, as well as reference for in-depth development of propolis products.

Abstract:Being abundant in many bioactive substances,propolis has extensive pharmacological activities and health-care functions. Among them, the immunomodulatory activity is the foundation of its multiple biological functions, and more and more people are interested in it.This article compiles data from the related research at home and abroad, focusing on the immunomodulatory activity of propolis and its two important monomer composition-CAPE and ArtepillinC; mainly discussed the immunomodulatory activity on lymphocyte of Brazilian green propolis, and put forward the problems existing in the research, in order to provide a basis for illuminating the mechanism of the immunomodulatory activity and establishing the chemical standardization of propolis.

Abstract:Propolis is a honeybee product with broad clinical applications. Current literature describes that propolis is collected from plant resins. From a systematic database search, 241 compounds were identified in propolis for the first time between 2000 and 2012; and they belong to such diverse chemical classes as flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, terpenenes, stilbenes, lignans, coumarins, and their prenylated derivatives, showing a pattern consistent with around 300 previously reported compounds. The chemical characteristics of propolis are linked to the diversity of geographical location, plant sources and bee species.

Abstract:Propolis is a resinous substances collected by honeybees from various plant sources. Twenty-nine propolis samples were collected from 20 provinces of China. The chemical compositions and antioxidant activities of ethanol extract of the propolis (EEP) were studied. China propolis, except Yunnan and Hainan propolis, had high content of total polyphenol and flavonoid, also had strong reducing power and antiradical activity. Moreover, the activities had strong relation with the content of total polyphenols. Results from RP-HPLC showed that gallic acid, epicatechin, fisetin and baicalin were in most propolis samples of China.

Abstract:Researchers are continuing to discover all the properties of propolis due to its complex composition and associated broad spectrum of activities. This review aims to characterize the latest scientific reports in the field of antibacterial activity of this substance. The results of studies on the influence of propolis on more than 600 bacterial strains were analyzed. The greater activity of propolis against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative was confirmed. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of propolis from different regions of the world was compared. As a result, high activity of propolis from the Middle East was found in relation to both, Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) strains. Simultaneously, the lowest activity was demonstrated for propolis samples from Germany, Ireland and Korea.

Abstract:The chemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of the essential oil of propolis (EOP) collected from 25 locations in China was investigated. Steam-distillation extraction was used to extract the EOP, and chemical composition was identified by GC/MS. The antioxidant activities of EOP were also measured. The result showed that a total of 406 compounds were detected in EOP. The major compounds of Chinese EOP were cedrol, gamma-eudesmol, benzyl alcohol, phenethyl alcohol, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, 3,4-dimethoxystyrene and guaiol. Principal component analysis revealed the significant correlation between EOP compositions and their origins, and certain correlation was detected between EOP and their color. Linear discriminant analysis showed that 88 % and 84 % of the propolis samples were predicted correctly as the groupings identified by climatic zone and the color, respectively. Furthermore, the differences of antioxidant activities of EOP were significant. EOP of Shandong had the strongest antioxidant activities, whereas EOP of Guangdong, Yunnan and Hunan showed the poorest.

Abstract:In this paper,the methods of supercritical CO2 extraction and separation by freezing were used to extract essential oils from propolis,and the antioxidant activity and chemical analyse of the extract were evaluated by the methods of chemiluminescence and GC-MS,respectively.The results showed that essential oils from propolis could effectively inhibit chemiluminescence induced by super oxygen-anion radical and hydroxyl radical.In ·OH systems,the IC50 was about 1.3 mg/mL;in O·-2 systems,the IC50 was about 0.75 mg/mL;and 51 components of essential oils of propolis were separated and identified
