Abstract:Propolis is an adhesive substance mixed with plant resins collected by honeybees (Apis mellifera) and secretions from their mandibular gland and wax gland, with wide pharmacological activity and healthcare functions. Its antioxidant activity has long been regarded as one of the most important biological activities of propolis. This article summarizes studies on the antioxidant activity of propolis extracts from different geographic origins and with different extraction methods, as well as several important monomer active ingredients in propolis, and concludes the potential molecular mechanism of antioxidant activity of propolis and its monomer ingredients, with the aim of providing ideas for further studies on pharmacological activity of propolis, as well as reference for in-depth development of propolis products.

Abstract:The antioxidant activities, polyphenol acid and flavonoid contents were discussed in this article, and studied the relationship between polyphenol acid and an- tioxidant activity. Furthermore, measured the main chemi- cal constituents of propolis collected in various geo- graphic origins. The results showed that antioxidant activ- ities of propolis from different areas were different, and the content of polyphenol acid and flavonoid were also different, and there existed some positive correlation be- tween polyphenol and antioxidant activities. The main chemical constituents of propolis of various areas had great significant different, which indicated that propolis had complex chemical constituents, and antioxidant activi- ties of propolis of various areas were the results of syn- ergistic effect of multiple constituents.

Abstract:Propolis is a kind of bee products with various biological activities and health functions.The antihyperglycemic effect is one of biological activities of propolis.In this article,the research progress on the antihyperglycemic effect of propolis as well as its main flavonoids and phenolic acid were summarized.The molecular mechanisms,including IRSPI3K pathway,PPARs transcription factors,AMPK pathway and antioxidant,were also summarized aiming to provide references for the future research of biological activities and further applications of propolis.

Abstract:The antioxidant activities of propolis of various geographic origins are vary because of their various chemistry components. In this article, we reviewed the antioxidant activities of propolis extracted by ethanol from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Hungary, New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, Ukraine, Uruguay, United States, Uzbekistan and China (Hebei, Hubei, and Zhejiang),were compared and compared the quantity of polyphenol and falvonoid. The results showed that propolis extracted by ethanol from Argentina, Australia, China, Hungary and New Zealand had relatively strong antioxidant activities, and were also correlated with the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents. Propolis with strong antioxidant activity contained antioxidative compounds such as kaempferol and phenethyl caffeate.

Abstract:Propolis is a natural resinous compound produced by bees, mixed with their saliva and wax, and has a range of biological benefits, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This article reviews the in vivo transformation of propolis flavonoids and their potential influence on drug efficacy. Despite propolis is widely used, there is little research on how the active ingredients of propolis change in the body and how they interact with drugs. Future research will focus on these interactions and the metabolic fate of propolis in vivo.

Optimization of extraction process of propolis flavonoids by response surface methodology and its antioxidant activity research

Abstract:Propolis flavonoids were extracted by ethanol,and the extraction process was optimized by response surface analysis. Qn the basis of one-factor-at-a-time experiment,optimal extraction conditions for maximizing popolis flavonoids were determined by using a 4-variable,3-1evel Box-Behnken experimental design combined with response surface analysis as follows ;the liquid-material ratio was 14:1 (mL. g-1),the extraction temperature was 72.6℃ ,the extraction time was 2.5h,the ethanol concentration was 80% (v/v), resulting in an propolis flavonoids yield of 33.82% ,which was basic agreement with the predicted value of 33.9324%. Thus,the optimal process was reliable. The antioxidant activity in vitro condition of propolis fiavonoids were evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging assay and potassium ferricyanide reduction assay using Vc as the control. Propolis flavones were found to have powerful DPPH free radical scavenging capacity and reducing power.Thus, propolis flavonoids could be developed as excellent natural antioxidant resources.

Abstract:Propolis is a strong anti-inflammatory agent and indicated improvement of various inflammations.In this article we reviewed the effect of propolis on inflammation and proinflammatory mediators.The possible action mechanism and active composition of propolis were analyzed.In addition,the theory about combination of anti-inflammatory drug and propolis showed synergic effect on inflammation gives out the suggestion to exploitation of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Abstract:Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources. On account of its chemical composition, propolis possesses several biological and pharmacological properties. In recent years, many papers have provided information concerning its composition. This review compiles data from most studies of propolis, focusing on the chemical composition of ethanol extracts of propolis (EEP), water extracts of propolis (WEP), and volatile oils from propolis (VOP). The characteristic compounds of EEP are polyphenols including flavonoids and related phenolic acids, and flavonoids are the most abundant and effective parts. They are considered to contribute more to the antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant effects than the other constituents. The main flavonoids in EEP are pinocembrin, galangin, chrysin, quercetin, kaempferol, and naringenin. The constituents reported to be in WEP include phenolic acids, caffeoylquinic acid, 3-mono-O-caffeoylquinic acid, caffeic acid, flavonoids, etc. The propolis volatile compounds are benzyl alcohol, benzyl acetate, cinnamic alcohol, vanillin, eudensmol, cyclohexyl benzoate, and benzyl benzoate, which are responsible for several biological properties. As a natural mixture, propolis is widely used in medicine and cosmetics, as well as being a constituent of health foods. Since propolis has been used extensively, information on its composition is not only of interest to the academic field, but also to propolis users.

Abstract:Propolis is a resinous substances collected by honeybees from various plant sources. Twenty-nine propolis samples were collected from 20 provinces of China. The chemical compositions and antioxidant activities of ethanol extract of the propolis (EEP) were studied. China propolis, except Yunnan and Hainan propolis, had high content of total polyphenol and flavonoid, also had strong reducing power and antiradical activity. Moreover, the activities had strong relation with the content of total polyphenols. Results from RP-HPLC showed that gallic acid, epicatechin, fisetin and baicalin were in most propolis samples of China.

Abstract:The antioxidant activities of the chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol extract fractions from propolis collected in Anhui, China were evaluated in this study. The ethyl acetate fraction contained the highest amount of total phenolics and total flavonoids, and showed the greatest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging capacities and Ferric Reducing/Antioxidant Power (FRAP). The antioxidant activity of twenty-two compounds isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction was also evaluated using the above-mentioned three assays. The results indicated that phenolics contributed to the antioxidant activity of propolis collected in Anhui, China. Therefore, propolis collected in Anhui, China and its phenolics might be used as a natural antioxidant.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the antioxidative effect of ethanol extract of the Propolis of Changbai Mountain in vitro.METHODSThe effect of total antioxidant capacity of ethanol extract of the Propolis of Changbai Mountain for hepatic tissue was detected by ferric reduction method,and the anti-lipid peroxidative activity was detected by thiobarbituric acid(TBA) method.RESULTSThe ethanol extract of the Propolis of Changbai Mountain had total antioxidant capacity and could scavenge hydroxy radical of liver homogenate,and meanwhile inhibited the occurrence of lipid peroxidation of liver homogenate induced by H2O2 with the concentration dependent.CONCLUSIONThe ethanol extract of Propolis of Changbai Mountain has an antioxidative effect in vitro.
Grouping, Spectrum–Effect Relationship and Antioxidant Compounds of Chinese Propolis from Different Regions Using Multivariate Analyses and Off-Line Anti-DPPH Assay

Abstract:49 samples of propolis from different regions in China were collected and analyzed for their chemical compositions, contents of total flavonoids (TFC), total phenolic acid (TPC) and antioxidant activity. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis identified 15 common components, including key marker compounds pinocembrin, 3-O-acetylpinobanksin, galangin, chrysin, benzyl p-coumarate, pinobanksin and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE). Cluster analysis (CA) and correlation coefficients (CC) analysis showed that these propolis could be divided into three distinct groups. Principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) revealed that the contents of isoferulic acid, caffeic acid, CAPE, 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid, chrysin and apigenin are closely related to the antioxidant properties of propolis. In addition, eight peak areas decreased after reacting with 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, indicating that these compounds have antioxidant activity. The results indicate that the grouping and spectrum–effect relationship of Chinese propolis are related to their chemical compositions, and several compounds may serve as a better marker for the antioxidant activity of Chinese propolis than TFC and TPC. The findings may help to develop better methods to evaluate the quality of propolis from different geographic origins.

Abstract:Propolis is a bee wax rich in various phytocomponents and traditionally used to treat various ailments. Propolis is reported to possess an array of biological properties including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic as well as cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, renoprotective, and derma protective activities. A plethora of studies confirmed that propolis is effective against various types of cancer including head and neck, lung, liver, brain (glioma), pancreas, kidney, prostate, skin (melanoma), breast, oral, esophagus, gastric, colorectal, and bladder cancers. However, many researchers have demonstrated that propolis displays potent chemoprotective/chemopreventive or anti-cancer activity against only a few types of cancers like oral, gastrointestinal, dermal (melanoma), breast, and prostate cancers. Therefore, this mini-review only summarizes the chemopreventive/chemotherapeutic activities of propolis and its updated underlying mechanisms. Taken together, propolis displays potent chemoprotective or anti-cancer effect due to the presence of various phytocomponents which contribute to pro-apoptotic, cytotoxic, anti-proliferative (cell cycle arrest), anti-metastatic, anti-invasive, anti-angiogenic and anti-genotoxic or anti-mutagenic properties along with antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory functions. Hence, propolis could be used as an adjuvant for treating various cancers along with standard chemotherapeutic drugs. However, many large-scale clinical studies are needed to justify such applications.

Abstract:The flavone glycosides of propolis were hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid,and then the antioxidation of its hydrolystes was determined.The results indicated that the flavone glycosides of propolis can be hydrolyzed into flavone glycones effectively by hydrochloric acid.The hydrolysis conversion rate of rutin reaches 59.1%,and the contents of kaempferol and isorhamnetin are increased by 1 to 3 times.Moreover,the scavenging capacity to DPPH radicals and the antioxidant activity for lard oil of the hydrolysates are improved obviously.
