By analyzing some samples of the previous year, the author managed to seek its news conception and agenda-setting, which will be enlightening to the violently competitive media market.

A Framing Analysis of News Reports on the Canton Fair from SCMP and CGTN

Abstract:Canton Fair, the biggest and the most long-standing trade fair of its kind in China, had attracted reports from various news oultlets. As a Chinese government-affiliated news agency, CGTN is expected to report on the fair in a positive tone that aligns with official perspectives and provide detailed exclusive information. On the other hand, the South China Morning Post, being more editorially independent, is likely to report on the fair in a more subjective manner and insights from gobal perspectives. This paper revealed that news coverage on the Canton Fair from South China Morning Post (SCMP) and CGTN from 2020 to 2023. Based on the participatory observation in a news coverage production system of China, this study revealed that a usful strategy is built on a practice system in two different medium. Such a system provides a theoretical foundation for medium to train reporters. In this process, the platform uses systematic methods to describe and solve problems with the help of big data technology.This paper mainly contributed to the developement of different news agencies, while it issues about promotion to quality of news coverage.

Abstract:About a decade ago,there sparked a heated debate on news planning in the realm of journalism.In order to prove whether news planning can be tenable,scholars even took the debate on the definition of news.Nevertheless,all the people disregarded the social practical problems behind the issue of news planning.With the establishment of socialist market economy mechanism,in order gain the benefit,the media paid close attention to news planning in two ways: planning journalistic activities through public relations firms to get profits directly,and planning in-depth reporting to attract audience by way of subject selection and plotting.This was a profound paradigm transition.However,the body of knowledge just took journalism as a normative,counter-measured or applied subject,and dissevered the relationship between journalism and other social elements,so the significance of this debate was greatly abated.Only by drawing a lesson seriously from the debate that occurred ten years ago can we become conscious subject of study from spontaneous subject of study.

Abstract:Zhou Zuoren paid great attention to the enlightenment of thought and attempted the newborn of the literary to reconstruct the national spirit.When he participated in editing the literature publication,he initiated positively the multiple ways of the modern intellectual′speech in view of the Chinese national conditions.During the period of YU Si Weekly,he initiated the editorial concept of enlightenment as the subject and the free competition in the literature.The editorial practice which included the column design and the attentions to the effect of readers had shown the ideological,knowledgeable and interesting character of the publication.At the same time,by the comparison ofModern Review Weekly,YU Si Weeklyhad emphasized the investment of the writer main body spirits and the construction of main body personality charm.The translation practices and the theory discussions complemented each other,which further showed the unique importance of Zhou Zuoren's editorial style.

Abstract:This case study adopts the method of content analyses to examine the news reports containing the opinions from the professionals in three samples of the China Youth Daily with the time span of 10 years. The paper attempts to reveal how the professnals opinions are presented by Chinese media and concludes that as the professnals opinions are more valued by media, there is a tendency to establish these experts as a kind of insignia.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of news communication innovation in the financial media environment, meet the update needs of news communication in the financial media environment, and make up for the shortcomings of the application of emerging media technologies in news communication, it is necessary to improve people's attention to news communication. With the advent of the era of integrated media, the application of emerging media technologies such as data news and robot news to the field of news communication has shaken the status of TV news in communication and affected its news production mode, but it will not replace traditional news, become the "forced mechanism" of traditional news production reform, and boost its reform and promotion. According to the social survey of 100 people, it is found that 88 people believe that under this competition mode, the development and challenges of TV livelihood news coexist. As Yu Guoming, a professor at Renmin University of China, said, "people's livelihood news is in the process of becoming a butterfly." TV people's livelihood news practitioners should reshape their news ideals and establish Internet thinking to face the ever-changing communication ecological environment. From channel expansion to content integration, from serving users to public opinion guidance, we are committed to building a new mainstream media with the guidance of traditional TV media, content advantages, equal communication, real-time interaction, and distinctive personality of new media. Only in this way can we obtain enough voice and influence in the highly competitive media environment.

Abstract:This case study examines how editors select stories for a Chinese-language publication’s WeChat public account. Results of a content analysis between May and August 2014 indicate that editors do not strictly rely on established news values to select WeChat stories. News categories better predict story decisions. Furthermore, news-category priorities identified in interviews with editors closely match what readers want to see.

Abstract:Audience research has gotten outstanding achievement in the communication research filed in China. However,today's audience research does not seem to continue such achievement,but lack in breakthroughs of new theory on the whole.At the beginning of audience research in China,with the purpose of press reform,the early researchers chose an orientation of scientism.Not long afterwards,as the present of decision - making value and market value,practical research became the mainstream.Audience research in China has on one hand lost ability of theoretical creativity out of over stress on the decision - making and market value of research,on the other hand lost in straits of theoretical ceasing out of blind worship on formalism practical research.Audience research will gain breakthrough providing that it not only avoid administration - ism and merchandise - ism,abandon purpose of instrumental reason,but also get rid of blind worship on scientism,and further strengthen the understanding and interpretation of humanism tradition.

Abstract:The news reports on the Wenchuan earthquake have enabled us to see how communication theories found their applications in the context of the Chinese media.A study of how they were incorporated in Chinese news reports on the disastrous accident is of realistic and academic importance.The agenda-setting theory,the Spiral of Silence,the immunization theory,and the traditional audience theory,among others,in the news reports on the earthquake,are all worth re-examining and re-thinking.As a matter of fact,these theories,as reflected in the news reports,have been "accommodated" more or less to the Chinese context of mass media.We know from a professional point of view that the exclusiveness of media agenda,the monopolization of the public-opinion market by the most privileged institution(s) of media,the over reliance on the influences of a few dominant media,and the negative audience theory,among others,are harmful to the creation of a healthy environment of the mass media.Therefore,in the news reports on serious accidents,only by setting diversified agendas and uttering multiple voices can the public interest be safeguarded.

New Channels, New Ways of Becoming Informed? Examining the Acquisition of Public Affairs Knowledge by Young People in China

Abstract:People always rely on a specific media environment to acquire knowledge about public affairs. This pilot study investigates gain of public affairs knowledge as an effect of media use and interpersonal discussion in China. Based on a contextual understanding of China’s press system, this study explores the mainstream and alternative forms of public affairs knowledge and the ways they are linked with use of new media (i.e., web news and social media) and traditional media (i.e., newspaper and television). An analysis of survey data first shows that television news and web news have direct positive effects on mainstream knowledge, and only web news directly contributes to alternative knowledge. Second, news from newspapers, television, the web and social media have indirect effects on both mainstream and alternative forms of public affairs knowledge through elaboration and interpersonal discussion. Third, elaboration is only associated with alternative knowledge, whereas interpersonal discussion is associated with both mainstream and alternative knowledge. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract:Previous studies on the influence of media convergence in China either took a market- or norm-oriented approach. From a news production perspective, the current study analyses the interaction between the top-down design and bottom-up practices of journalists to disclose the influence of the dominant path of media convergence within the press industry of Fujian Province. A survey and 20 in-depth interviews show that the current media convergence practices of Fujian’s press industry fail to receive the support of journalists because of institutional, organisational and individual complexities, rather than technological reasons. This study discusses the implications of this finding for media convergence in China.

Abstract:Delivering news on social media platforms is an increasingly important consideration in journalism practice. However, little attention has been paid to audience engagement with news on social media, especially the discursive presentation of news on the Chinese social media platform WeChat. Based on 36 news reports collected from the People’s Daily official account, this study analyses how news discourse is constructed and presented to engage audiences. The results suggest that highlighting proximity, personalisation, positivity and human interest in news values are the strategies adopted by journalists to engage audiences. The headline tends to use forward-referring terms and performs the speech acts of assertives and expressives to construct news values of proximity and positivity. The news story makes use of particular addressing terms, reported speeches and evaluative markers to construct news values of personalisation, positivity and human interest. The study enriches the analysis of journalistic practice of news on social media in the Chinese context.

Abstract:Key to the local audience's conceptions of the global spectacle, the marketized regional press in China has been increasingly confronted with a complex world to cover as China finds itself integrating steadily into the global marketplace and rising as a formidable power in the post-WTO era. Using the data collected from five Chinese regional newspapers in 1989 and 2009, this study indicates that the consequences of spillover in China's growing integration with the global system and the ever-increasing media marketization have been carried into the domain of international news, particularly in terms of a more neutral journalistic perspective and a widened range of vision at the local level. The results also show that the regionalization of international news reporting is still contained within the orbit of the party-state. The comparison over a 20-year time span suggests that China's integration into the world capitalism system has opened up a larger global landscape for the local press, but not necessarily a wider latitude to negotiate the terrain.

Abstract:With the process of globalization, news reporting has become an important way for people to learn about the world. News language, as the main carrier of disseminating information, has a distinct social and cultural nature. Since the period of the nuclear-contaminated water discharge, all kinds of news have emerged, which has research value. At present, the research on "nuclear-contaminated water discharge" is in the initial stage, and the research combined with linguistics is rare. In this paper, we take the attitude perspective of the appraisal theory as the theoretical analysis framework, select the related reports of China Daily and BBC as the research corpus, and use the qualitative methods to conduct a comparative analysis to explore the differences in the attitudes and views of the two. The study found that, firstly, there are very rich attitude resources in both news reports, among which appreciation resources are used the most. Second, the use of attitudinal resources in both news reports reflects that different media's evaluations and attitudes toward the same event are influenced by their positions and interests.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the media industry in China, fake news has become a severe problem. This paper identifies four types of fake news, with examples which include totally fake news, distorted fake news, fast news, and sensational journalism. The second part of the paper attempts to analyse the causes of fake news. The acceleration of the trend of media marketization, the loss of professional ethics by media practitioners, the influence of stakeholders, and the marketization of news value in university education, have all given rise to the emergence of fake news. The third part investigates the influence of fake news on society. Fake news can result in inappropriate policy making by the government. With the prevalence of fake news, public media literacy declines and social ethos becomes fickle. Finally, the paper attempts to explore possibly effective countermeasures, which involve establishing a fact-checking mechanism, calling for slow news instead of fast news, improving the public’s media literacy, and reforming the news paradigm, in order to resist fake news in future.

Abstract:Nowadays,new technologies are reinventing journalism,the study of journalism in China is facing structural difficulties,cognitive changes,and practical confusion.In the face of the complex social network interwoven with people and things,the journalism theory driven by the logic of"thingology"no longer has explanatory power,and there is an urgent need for a new perspective to re-understand the material,emotional,and relational changes occurring in Journalism.Therefore,this article introduces the theory of"social world"from the perspective of materialist phenomenology,following the principles of"interactional practices in context","relational forms",and"construction of order".By revisiting the topics of Chinese journalism research in 2023,the study tries to respond to how journalism theories and organizational and propaganda practices in the digital era should be carried out under the orientation of humanism.Finally,the paper puts forward a perspective towards"News-World",which is both to understand journalism's role in the social world and to understand the social world we live in through journalistic practices.
