Abstract:It takes a long time to move huge parts in the heavy-duty mechanical department and the schedule only considering production facilities is not adequate.Therefore,the hybrid flow shop problem with blocking(HFS-B)is introduced to analyze the various logistics and production facilities coordination scheduling problem in the heavy-duty mechanical department.A mathematical model of the problem is built up and optimization process of scheduling problem is carried out based on genetic algorithm.A project example is presented and its optimization scheme is obtained for the logistics and facilities coordination scheduling problem,concerning cranes,vehicles and manufacturing facilities.Finally,it is concluded from the simulation results that the method is effective.

Abstract:This paper addresses a two-stage flow shop scheduling problem with a batch processor followed by a discrete processor. Jobs are grouped in incompatible job families, and the buffer between the two machines is limited. The batch processor will be blocked until there is a free unit in the buffer. The objective is to determine a schedule such that the total completion time is minimized. We propose a mixed integer linear programming model and two lower bounds for this problem. A hybrid algorithm together with the worst-case analyses is also developed. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has a competitive performance on the large-scale problems.

Abstract:In a flowshop, the current stage has to remain work-in-process and cannot release any task to the downstream stage once the buffer is stuffed. This scheduling phenomenon is called blocking, and it usually occurs in an industrial setting because of the buffer capacity or the product volume. This study addresses several blocking flowshop scheduling problems to individually optimize the following criteria, i.e. makespan, maximum lateness, or maximum delivery-completion time, in which the tasks are available at different release dates. Given that these scheduling problems are strongly NP-complete, exact and metaheuristic algorithms are designed for different scale instances. An effective branch and bound method is proposed to search exact solutions for small-scale instances within a given period, where well-designed branching rules and lower bounds prune considerable invalid nodes. Further, to seek high-quality feasible schedules in a short time, a discrete artificial bee colony algorithm is provided for medium-scale instances, where a dispatching-rule-based initialization, a series of efficient non-delay variable neighborhood search mechanisms, and a well-designed disturbing scheme enhance the optimization capability. Comprehensive computational tests are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new flow shop combinatorial optimization problem, called the blocking hybrid flow shop group scheduling problem (BHFGSP). In the problem, no buffers exist between any adjacent machines, and a set of jobs with different sequence-dependent setup times needs to be scheduled and processed at organized manufacturing cells. We verify the correctness of the mathematical model of BHFGSP by using CPLEX. In this paper, we proposed a novel iterated greedy algorithm to solve the problem. The proposed algorithm has two key techniques. One is the decoding procedure that calculates the makespan of a job sequence, and the other is the neighborhood probabilistic selection strategies with families and blocking-based jobs. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated through a large number of numerical experiments. Comprehensive results show that the proposed algorithm is effective in solving BHFGSP.

Abstract:The two-stage flow shop scheduling problem with a batch processing machine and limited waiting time was studied in the paper entitled “Two new approaches for a two-stage hybrid flowshop problem with a single batch processing machine under waiting time constraint” [Chung, T.-P., Sun, H., Liao, C.-J., 2016, Computers & Industrial Engineering, 10.1016/j.cie.2016.11.031]. In the original paper, this problem was formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming model. However, this model is not correct and the blocking time is confusing. In this note, a correct mixed-integer linear programming model is proposed and the confusing blocking time is discussed. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the necessity of correction.

Abstract:This paper considers minimizing makespan for a blocking flowshop scheduling problem, which has important application in a variety of modern industries. A constructive heuristic is first presented to generate a good initial solution by combining the existing profile fitting (PF) approach and Nawaz-Enscore-Ham (NEH) heuristic in an effective way. Then, a memetic algorithm (MA) is proposed including effective techniques like a heuristic-based initialization, a path-relinking-based crossover operator, a referenced local search, and a procedure to control the diversity of the population. Afterwards, the parameters and operators of the proposed MA are calibrated by means of a design of experiments approach. Finally, a comparative evaluation is carried out with the best performing algorithms presented for the blocking flowshop with makespan criterion, and with the adaptations of other state-of-the-art MAs originally designed for the regular flowshop problem. The results show that the proposed MA performs much better than the other algorithms. Ultimately, 75 out of 120 upper bounds provided by Ribas [“An iterated greedy algorithm for the flowshop scheduling with blocking”, OMEGA, vol. 39, pp. 293-301, 2011.] for Taillard flowshop benchmarks that are considered as blocking flowshop instances are further improved by the presented MA.

Abstract:Although a large amount of intelligent handling equipment has been widely used in automated container terminals, few studies have explored the coordination optimization among them, which is critical to the overall operational efficiency of terminals. This paper investigates the integrated scheduling of intelligent handling equipment at automated container terminals, with challenging characteristics such as bidirectional flows and limited buffers. Besides, other characteristics such as blocking, machine eligibility, and separable sequence-dependent setup times also complicate the problem, making it difficult to find an optimal or near-optimal solution. This study formulates the problem as the blocking hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with bidirectional flows and limited buffers, and then develops a compact mixed-integer linear programming model that can obtain the optimal scheme on small-scale cases. To increase the size of solvable problems and improve the performance of the solution, an adaptive large neighborhood search is presented, which takes a high-quality coding scheme that specifies the equipment used by each job in various stages. Experiments have been conducted and computational results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of solution quality and convergence speed.

Abstract:We consider a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) which is composed of a set of workstations, a common buffer and a Material Handling System (MHS). Each workstation includes a limited input buffer, several machines and a limited output buffer. The MHS consists of several carts moving jobs among the workstations according to the process paths required by the jobs. The carts treat blocked jobs in accordance with a new blocking mechanism, called the ‘FMS blocking mechanism’. The function of the common buffer is to temporarily store blocked jobs. Such an FMS is formulated as an open queueing network, in which the MHS is modeled as a central station routing jobs to the workstations. In the model, the machines process jobs with an exponentially distributed processing time, and the carts route jobs to the workstations following a ‘Blocking Depended Static Markov (BDSM) job routing’ with an exponentially distributed routing time and treat blocked jobs in accordance with the FMS blocking mechanism. It is shown that the equilibrium state distribution of the model has a product-form solution. The blocking probabilities are obtained by computing a fixed point problem whose solution is revealed by an iterative algorithm. Moreover, it is shown that the throughputs of the workstations are independent of the spaces on the local buffers at the workstations. Several numerical examples are presented.

Abstract:The blocking flowshop scheduling problem with makespan criterion has important applications in a variety of industrial systems. Heuristics that explore specific characteristics of the problem are essential for many practical systems to find good solutions with limited computational effort. This paper first presents two simple constructive heuristics, namely weighted profile fitting (wPF) and PW, based on the profile fitting (PF) approach of McCormick et al. [Sequencing in an assembly line with blocking to minimize cycle time. Operations Research 1989;37:925–36] and the characteristics of the problem. Then, three improved constructive heuristics, called PF-NEH, wPF-NEH, and PW-NEH, are proposed by combining the PF, wPF, and PW with the enumeration procedure of the Nawaz–Enscore–Ham (NEH) heuristic [A heuristic algorithm for the m-machine, n-job flow shop sequencing problem. OMEGA-International Journal of Management Science 1983;11:91–5] in an effective way. Thirdly, three composite heuristics i.e., PF-NEHLS, wPF-NEHLS, and PW-NEHLS, are developed by using the insertion-based local search method to improve the solutions generated by the constructive heuristics. Computational simulations and comparisons are carried out based on the well-known flowshop benchmarks of Taillard [Benchmarks for basic scheduling problems. European Journal of Operation Research 1993;64:278–85] that are considered as blocking flowshop instances. The results show that the presented constructive heuristics perform significantly better than the existing ones, and the proposed composite heuristics further improve the presented constructive heuristics by a considerable margin. In addition, 17 new best-known solutions for Taillard benchmarks with large scale are found by the presented heuristics.

Abstract:This paper proposes new block properties for the flowshop scheduling problem with blocking to minimise makespan. A pruning procedure based on these proposed properties is used in the construction phase of an iterated greedy algorithm to decrease the total number of solutions to be examined to find an optimal schedule. Computational results using Taillard’s benchmark problem instances show that the new block properties help to eliminate more ‘unpromising’ solutions than the classic properties. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparison with some high-performing algorithms for the considered problem.

Abstract:This paper proposes a three-phase algorithm (TPA) for the flowshop scheduling problem with blocking (BFSP) to minimize makespan. In the first phase, the blocking nature of BFSP is exploited to develop a priority rule that creates a sequence of jobs. Using this as the initial sequence and a variant of the NEH-insert procedure, the second phase generates an approximate solution to the problem. Then, utilizing a modified simulated annealing algorithm incorporated with a local search procedure, the schedule generated in the second phase is improved in the third phase. A pruning procedure that helps evaluate most solutions without calculating their complete makespan values is introduced in the local search to further reduce the computational time needed to solve the problem. Results of the computational experiments with Taillard's benchmark problem instances show that the proposed TPA algorithm is relatively more effective and efficient in minimizing makespan for the BFSP than the state-of-the-art procedures. Utilizing these results, 53 out of 60 new tighter upper bounds have been found for large-sized Taillard's benchmark problem instances.

Abstract:Batch flow shops model systems that process a variety of job types using a fixed infrastructure. This model has applications in several areas including chemical manufacturing, building construction, and assembly lines. Since the throughput of such systems depends, often strongly, on the sequence in which they produce various products, scheduling these systems becomes a problem with very practical consequences. Nevertheless, optimally scheduling these systems is NP-complete. This paper demonstrates that batch flow shops can be represented as a particular kind of heap model in the max-plus algebra. These models are shown to belong to a special class of linear systems that are globally stable over finite input sequences, indicating that information about past states is forgotten in finite time. This fact motivates a new solution method to the scheduling problem by optimally solving scheduling problems on finite-memory approximations of the original system. Error in solutions for these “t-step” approximations is bounded and monotonically improving with increasing model complexity, eventually becoming zero when the complexity of the approximation reaches the complexity of the original system.

Abstract:Flowshop scheduling is a popular and valuable optimisation model in academia. Application of the scheduling model for industrial problems has to consider real-world scenarios, such as non-permutation scheduling, finite buffers and individual competition from different customers. These non-negligibly factors can lead to a huge solution space, leaving it barely able to be effectively solved. Therefore, this study investigates a non -permutation bi-agent flowshop scheduling problem with limited buffers, where tasks are released over time and minimisation of a linear criterion (i.e. weighted combination of makespans) improves customer satisfaction. Mixed integer programming model is established for this strong NP-hardness problem that the optimum cannot be found in polynomial time. For small-scale instances, a branch and bound (B&B) algorithm is provided to achieve exact solutions, where effective non-delay pruning rules, well-designed lower and upper bounds are utilised to eliminate invalid nodes during searching. For medium-scale instances, a hybrid particle swarm optimisation (HPSO) algorithm is proposed to seek high-quality solutions, where a two-stage collaborative evolution promotes deep exploration, an efficient sequence-based rule amends infeasible solutions and several validated mechanisms enhances convergence. Evaluation of extensive computational experiments, including components evaluation and nonparametric test, demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented algorithms.

Abstract:A tabu search algorithm combined with priority rules was proposed to solve the Hybrid Flow Shop(HFS) scheduling problem with blocking constraint.Heuristics algorithms are developed to generate the initial solution.The tabu search is restricted in the processing order of the first stage,while the whole schedule is built using priority rules.The computational experiments show that this approach reduces the searching space and has a good result for the addressed problem.

Abstract:Based on min-max systems theory, min-max algebra is used to capture both AND and XOR logic in workflow diagrams with queueing. AND logic requires that output event happens only when all the input events happen. XOR logic requires that output event happens only when one of the input events happens according to the probability distribution. The workflow diagrams with AND/XOR logic and queueing are constructed by using elementary building blocks (AND and XOR blocks). Analyzing the performance, lower bounds on the output rate of customers in this class of workflow diagrams are provided. A simulation example is given to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Abstract:To effectively analyze and evaluate the performances of Interbay material handling system with shortcut and blocking in semiconductor fab, an extended Markov chain model (EMCM) has been proposed, in which the system characteristics such as vehicle blockage and system's shortcut configuration are well considered. With production data from Interbay material handling system of a 300mm semiconductor fab, the proposed EMCM is compared with simulation analytic model. The result demonstrates that the proposed EMCM is an effective modeling approach for analyzing Interlay's performances in the early phase of system design.

Abstract:We consider a production system comprising multiple stations (or workshops) such as an entry station, a set of work stations, a central station, and an exit station, which are arranged in a general configuration. A worker (or a vehicle tool) is assigned to each station, who sends a part from the station to the destination station according to the required process path of the part. Any part is allowed to visit a work station more than once if its process path requires. We propose a new control strategy with the push policy for instructing each worker to send a part and the kanban mechanism for controlling the work-in-process (WIP) in each work station. As all work stations have limited local buffers, the central station is used for storing blocked parts temporarily. Such a production system is modeled as an open queueing network in a general configuration with a Markovian part sending policy and a machine no blocking mechanism. The queueing network is analytically characterized. Some important performance measures are compared with other control strategies. A semi-open decomposition approach is applied to the queueing network for computing the blocking probabilities when parts arrive at the work stations. An algorithm is developed based on the semi-open decomposition approach. Numerical experiments show the quality of the solutions obtained by the algorithm as well as a property of a performance measure. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:We consider an open queueing network in a general configuration with a kanban blocking (KB) mechanism. The system is composed of many stations such as an entrance station, workstations, a common station and an exit station, that are arranged in a general configuration. The work-in-process (WIP) at a workstation is controlled by the kanban mechanism. The function of the common station is to store blocked jobs temporarily. A semi-open decomposition approach is applied to the queueing network as a technique which decomposes each workstation as a semi-open queueing network. Then the blocking probabilities for jobs when they are routed to the workstations are obtained by an algorithm of calculating a set of fixed point problems. A numerical example shows that the quality of the solution generated by the algorithm is satisfactory. Based on obtained blocking probabilities, the system performances can be easily measured.

Abstract:Supermarket models are a class of parallel queueing networks with an adaptive control scheme that play a key role in the study of resource management of, such as, computer networks, manufacturing systems and transportation networks. When the arrival processes are non-Poisson and the service times are non-exponential, analysis of such a supermarket model is always limited, interesting, and challenging. This paper describes a supermarket model with non-Poisson inputs: Markovian Arrival Processes (MAPs) and with non-exponential service times: Phase-type (PH) distributions, and provides a generalized matrix-analytic method which is first combined with the operator semigroup and the mean-field limit. When discussing such a more general supermarket model, this paper makes some new results and advances as follows: (1) Providing a detailed probability analysis for setting up an infinite-dimensional system of differential vector equations satisfied by the expected fraction vector, where "the invariance of environment factors" is given as an important result. (2) Introducing the phase-type structure to the operator semigroup and to the mean-field limit, and a Lipschitz condition can be obtained by means of a unified matrix-differential algorithm. (3) The matrix-analytic method is used to compute the fixed point which leads to performance computation of this system. Finally, we use some numerical examples to illustrate how the performance measures of this supermarket model depend on the non-Poisson inputs and on the non-exponential service times. Thus the results of this paper give new highlight on understanding influence of non-Poisson inputs and of non-exponential service times on performance measures of more general supermarket models.
