Abstract:This article discusses and compares the three ways of explaining institutions： the way of institutional functions, the way of the institutional deep structure and the way of game theory. We can put the three ways together to form an intergrated analytical framework in the empirical studies in institu- tions. The intergrated analytical framework is： first, we seek the explaining variables in the ways of the functions and the deep structure of the institutions; second, we make a game theory model in order to construct the linkage in the explaining the variables and the institutions.

Abstract:Business literature identifies trust as a key factor in promoting electronic interfirm cooperation (EIC). We believe, however, that such findings cannot be generalized to all forms of trust nor to all types of EIC. Specifically, we propose that a high presence of a certain form of trust called social trust may actually impede EIC when it is supported by proprietary-standard interorganizational systems (proprietary-IOS). Instead, the presence of high social trust will encourage companies to adopt EIC supported by open-standard IOS (open-IOS).

Abstract:Digital platforms simplify the complexities of day-to-day transactions in the maritime logistics industry and facilitate participants to seamlessly connect with each other. However, platform enterprises find it difficult to involve participants in their platforms. It is also challenging for these enterprises to share data out of consideration for participants' privacy concerns, rights, and interests. To promote data sharing, this study intends to understand the strategies of both platform enterprises and participants based on a dynamic game model to provide policy implications to platform enterprises and the government. The main findings are as follows. First, when platform enterprises move first, they should subsidize key participants with high privacy costs to compensate for the negative externality of data. Second, in the early stages of building a platform, when supporting platform enterprises move first, they must subsidize both key participants with low privacy costs and general participants. Third, governments must introduce regulations and laws to govern the delimitation of data property rights.

Abstract:Based on global sourcing circumstances, 166 transnational enterprises are proceeded questionnaire survey for the effects of supply chain relationship capital on cooperation performance, and Hierarchical Regression Analysis is applied to analyze the empirical research. The research reveals the stronger tie strength, network centrality, degree of confidence, and information sharing between enterprises and suppliers, the higher cooperation performance to create win-win for both buyer enterprises and suppliers and reinforce the international competitiveness of enterprises.

Abstract:In today's increasingly globalized environment, more and more companies recognize the mutual dependence of supply chain partners in value creation. When making business decisions, they take into consideration their partners’ bottom line profitability, especially in emerging markets. The question is, is this kind of practice sustainable? This study makes an attempt to formalize this issue by examining a stylized two‐party supply chain model in which each player maximizes its own profit while making a certain commitment to its partner. We compare five different games between the two supply‐chain partners, which reflect different power positions of the players and different levels of commitment. We identify conditions under which both players are better off with mutual commitments than without, a situation we call win–win. We show that win–win can be achieved if and only if the mutual commitments are comparable. Thus, the recognition of mutual dependence of the supply chain members needs to be translated into reciprocal concerns. In addition, different players’ commitments play different roles but together they have a similar effect as a profit sharing contract. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings in the context of socially responsible operations. In particular, our analyses show that it is possible to care about the supply chain partners’ bottom line without sacrificing one's own profitability, and our models can be used as a tool to determine the commitment levels by evaluating the predicted outcome.

Abstract:Due to the existence of limited rationality and information asymmetry, trust between enterprises in the cloud manufacturing environment is characterized by significant complexity. In this paper, to promote the formation of a better trust relationship between enterprises and to ensure the efficient service and stable operation of the manufacturing process to a greater extent, we take into account the subjective cognition of the game parties from the perspective of service combination, introduce the prospect theory, construct an evolutionary game model of “service demander-service provider-platform supervisor,” analyze the evolutionary stabilization strategy, and explore the influence of different factors on the interenterprise trust relationship in the cloud manufacturing environment through numerical simulation. The results show that enhancing the synergy between multiple service providers has a significant impact on improving trust between cloud manufacturing enterprises. The rewards and punishments of the cloud manufacturing platform are conducive to improving interenterprise trust. There exists a critical value dividing opportunistic behavior into explicit and implicit behaviors. When it is less than the critical value, opportunistic behavior is implicit and the service demander trusts the service provider and the transaction continues; when it is greater than the critical value, opportunistic behavior is explicit and the service demander no longer trusts until the service provider is fully trustworthy. The inhibitory effect of good transaction history on opportunistic behavior is evident. Finally, the reasons and effects of the above factors and the subjective perceptions of the game parties in cloud manufacturing are discussed, as well as their concrete manifestations in the CASICloud (China Aerospace Science&Industry Cloud) and relevant suggestions are put forward.

Abstract:Social trust is the result and reflection of repeated games between individuals. Is social trust capable of optimizing enterprises' financing modes? The following results are obtained. (1) The greater the regional social trust level, the lower the cost of equity. (2) Social trust plays a larger role in lowering the cost of equity in state-owned enterprises and enterprises located in regions with strong rule of law. By improving accounting information quality, social trust can reduce investor information risk, thus lowering equity costs.

Abstract:Trust is the foundation of supply chain members' cooperation and the key factor for supply chain operating effectively.The trust evaluation model is presented in this paper,then the important factors influencing evolution of the trust relationship and the stability of the cooperative relationship are analyzed.The results show that it needs to establish tracking mechanism of the transaction records.Furthermore,trust between supply chain members is the result of evolutionary game.The system can evolve to the high trust equilibrium by increasing the expected high trust profits,decreasing the cost of high trust,establishing fair and effective benefits and risk allocation mechanism and attaching more intention to the cooperation.

Abstract:In this paper,the game theory is applied to the study of the reputation games of firms under non-perfect and perfect information conditions and the conversion condition from non-perfect to perfect information. On the basis of the study of the reputation games, the social and firms' reputation construction mechanism in the network-based manufacturing is investigated. The key to the social reputation mechanism is the establishment of medium mechanisms of the identification of firms' status and appraisal and consultation of the firms' reputation. Abstract:Corporate greenwashing seriously impedes global sustainable development. Despite the discussion on the factors influencing corporate greenwashing strategy, the impact of informal institutions, particularly social trust, remains underexplored. Based on institutional theory and the attention‐based view, this study examines the effect of social trust on corporate greenwashing strategy. Additionally, it also explores the mediating roles of managers' environmental attention and firms' green open innovation, as well as the moderating roles of government environmental regulation and market competition. Using a sample of 3,143 heavily polluting companies listed on China's A‐share market, the results show that social trust negatively impacts corporate greenwashing strategy. Managers' environmental attention and firms' green open innovation are the chain mediators through which social trust constrains firms' greenwashing strategy. Moreover, government environmental regulation strengthens the effect of social trust on corporate greenwashing, while market competition weakens the effect. The obtained conclusions provide an important guidance for curbing corporate greenwashing strategy and highlight the role of social trust.

Can the social trust promote corporate green innovation? Evidence from China

Abstract:Corporate green innovation has played a crucial role in balancing profitability and environmental protection. The existing research on determinant factors of green innovation has its main defects in emphasizing excessively enterprise's formal institutional environment and neglecting the informal institutional environment, causing an incomplete understanding of the relationship between institutional environments and corporate green innovation. To bridge this gap, using a sample of Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed firms in manufacturing industry during the period of 2010-2016, we investigate how social trust, an important informal institutions, affects corporate green innovation. Our results show that social trust is positively associated with green innovation, remaining valid after applying endogenous and robustness tests. In addition, the positive relationship between social trust and green innovation is more prominent when the enterprise is non-state-owned or locates in a looser command-and-control (CAC) environmental regulations region. Further analysis shows that social trust boosts corporate green innovation via promoting knowledge sharing, decreasing financing constraints, and fulfilling more corporate social responsibility (CSR). This paper enriches the literature concerning social trust and green innovation and draws back more public attention on the role of informal institutions play in promoting green innovation.

Abstract:[Research Purpose] In the era of the digital economy, there is an urgent need to explore solutions to various problems faced by enterprises in their digital transformation, such as the lack of data resources, data silos, and information asymmetry within supply chains. [Method/Contribution] Leveraging evolutionary game theory and adopting a supply chain perspective, this study integrates the government and upstream/downstream enterprises into a unified analysis framework. In this study, a three-party evolutionary game model under government coordination aimed at fostering data openness and sharing among supply chain enterprises is constructed. Simulation analyses are conducted on decision-making strategies concerning data sharing between the government and supply chain enterprises across different scenarios. [Research Conclusion] It is observed that the high level of benefits and low costs associated with data sharing incentivize supply chain enterprises to actively open and share their data. Notably, government incentives significantly encourage data openness among these enterprises by subsidizing the cost of data sharing, "especially evident when the incentive coefficient exceeds 0.6," thereby guiding them toward collaborative data-sharing initiatives. Finally, it is also found that data sharing further promotes the digital transformation of the supply chain, optimizing decision-making processes, resource allocation, and operational efficiency. Through data sharing, better forecasting, inventory management, and risk mitigation strategies can be implemented. Moreover, data sharing fosters collaboration among supply chain partners enhances transparency and trust, and makes the supply chain more synchronized and responsive, which leads to value cocreation within the supply chain, with downstream enterprises being more incentivized than upstream enterprises by this value cocreation.

Abstract:Recent research has demonstrated the important role of social trust in economic growth. As a form of informal institution, social trust and formal institution are inextricable and intrinsically related. This article aims to investigate the relationship between social trust and institution, and their combined effects on economic growth. In an empirical investigation of cross-provincial data in the period 2001-2009 in China, our estimates suggest that the increase in social trust significantly promotes economic growth. The improvement of formal institution is also beneficial to economic growth. The effect of social trust on economic growth depends on the institution level, and this effect weakens with institutional strength.
Information‐Sharing Strategies Based on Trust Risks Under a Governmental Incentive Mechanism

Abstract:Due to swift shifts in market demand and variable production capacities within the chip industry, trust risks between upstream and downstream entities can readily develop, leading to challenges in information sharing. To tackle this challenge, this paper develops a two‐level evolutionary game model between vehicle manufacturers and chip suppliers. It examines the effects of government rewards and penalties, trust risks, and spillover benefits from information sharing on the strategic decisions of both parties. Furthermore, the paper investigates system evolution strategies under three distinct government policies: forced, fair, and favored. The findings show that as trust risks escalate, both entities in the supply chain tend to withhold information due to concerns over losing their unique competitive advantages. However, enhancing spillover benefits through information sharing positively impacts the mitigation of trust risks. Numerical simulations demonstrate that while a government‐forced policy with increased penalties may boost information sharing in the short term, it proves less effective over the long term. Conversely, preferred rewards and subsidies under equitable policies can significantly boost one party's readiness to share information, thus enhancing cooperation between the two parties. The paper also offers countermeasures and recommendations. For instance, it suggests that upstream and downstream enterprises should not only foster mutual trust but also vigilantly track government policy directions to develop effective information‐sharing strategies. Furthermore, government industrial policies should fully consider the actual market conditions to alleviate trust risks between upstream and downstream entities and promote information sharing among enterprises.

Abstract:The institutional environment has a significant impact on the location of overseas investments by multinational enterprises (MNEs). However, there remain two research gaps. First, fewer studies focused on the impact of subnational regional institutions on the location choices of MNEs. Second, study on informal institutions has been more limited. This study investigates the effect of the informal institution (social trust) in the Chinese subnational region on the location choices of foreign firms and the mechanism of its role. Using the sample of foreign firms’ location choices in China from 2008 to 2020 in Orbis Global Enterprise Database, this study finds that social trust positively related to the location choices of foreign firms in subnational regions. Our results also show that this positive effect is contingent on the formal institution and the cultural distance between home and host country. When the formal institution is strong and the cultural distance between home and host country is high, social trust has a more significant positive impact on the location choices of foreign firms in subnational regions. Besides, the results show that cost advantage, information advantage and innovation advantage are important mechanisms for social trust to influence foreign firms’ location choices in subnational regions. This study is important for understanding the role of subnational regional informal institutions in influencing strategic decisions of MNEs. At the same time, it has certain guiding significance for governments in attracting foreign direct investment and for multinational enterprises in selecting suitable overseas investment locations.

Abstract:Given that Chinese firms` expectations of institution effectiveness often deviate from their reality perceptions during economic transition without perfect institutions, the paper firstly proposes the concept of institutional trust deviation based on institutional trust`s definition and fit theory, then examines its effects on cooperative desire by 274 firms` survey.The results show that institutional trust deviation not only directly influences cooperative desire, but also indirectly, significantly and negatively affects it through supply chain collaboration trust.

Abstract:Numerous studies have explored the relationship between cooperation and inter-individual trust. However, the understanding of the dynamic interaction process of trust among networked agents with bounded rationality remains limited. To bridge this gap, this paper develops an evolutionary game model that incorporates a trust perspective considering emotional scaling. Trust is quantified based on individuals' limited memory of interaction experiences, acting as a perturbation factor that influences cooperative strategies. The role of emotional factors, particularly guilt and anger, in trust formation is emphasized. Extensive numerical simulations reveal that introducing trust greatly enhances cooperation in the system, especially in networks with lower randomness. Trust-based cooperative decision-making demonstrates evident historical path dependence characteristics. Notably, the effects of emotions differ. Guilt effectively motivates defectors to switch strategies, thereby enhancing cooperation. In contrast, the influence of anger on cooperation diminishes as it becomes intertwined with other factors during the trust-building process. The empirical results of higher returns for low-trust groups have also been validated in this paper. Overall, this work contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying cooperation formation.

Abstract:Institution system is an important part of modern social governance. Government, market and social relations within the system, as well as the corresponding institutional arrangements, can be said to be the top priority. Corporate social responsibility is an outstanding case that embodies the relationship and institutional arrangement of the three in practice. Government regulation of social credit system is a good example to analysis it. The research on government regulation of social credit system itself is put forward from the perspective of government, so in the field of government regulation of social credit system, should enterprises play a role? Especially in the era of big data, a large number of data are provided by private enterprises. Without these data, it is difficult to complete the construction of big data system. If enterprises should play their role, what’s the contribution of the government? Academic and industrial circles have been expressing their own opinions on these issues. Therefore, this paper attempts to build a game model among government, enterprise and society to solve the following problems: how to solve the relationship problem among government, enterprise and society? How to build the corresponding system? What’s the corresponding government regulation of China’s social credit system go from the perspective of business ethics? Through the game model analysis, the author finds that shareholders can reduce the threat of CEO replacement and collude with the management staff members to make the cake (including the interests of stakeholders) smaller. But on the basis of the loss of stakeholders’ rights and interests, shareholders’ wealth is increasing, which also explains why more and more senior executives are trying to form collusion with stakeholders in the campaign against antitakeover and loose audit system. Shareholders’ rights and interests and stakeholders’ rights and interests present a seesaw phenomenon. The response of the stakeholders and shareholders to a better corporate governance model is consistent. That is to say, the increase of shareholders’ income is not necessarily based on the loss of stakeholders. The game model also shows that the protection of formal laws and regulations is the main factor to increase the benefits of stakeholders. Through the case of the social credit system, we will conclude that the formal laws and regulations cannot fully ensure the increase of stakeholders’ income, but also need to strengthen the transformation of institutional advantages into governance advantages, and strengthen the law enforcement. It will finally promote the further improvement of social credit system.
