Abstract:We study whether greater social trust is associated with a lower incidence of corporate misconduct. Both social norm and network theory suggest that social trust can affect managerial behavior and reduce the likelihood of misconduct behavior. Consistent with this prediction, we find that social trust is negatively associated with corporate misconduct behavior. Moreover, we show that, when media coverage is higher, the negative relation between social trust and corporate misconduct behavior is more pronounced. Further analyses suggest that social trust can help mitigate both disclosure-related and nondisclosure-related misconduct.

Abstract:Business literature identifies trust as a key factor in promoting electronic interfirm cooperation (EIC). We believe, however, that such findings cannot be generalized to all forms of trust nor to all types of EIC. Specifically, we propose that a high presence of a certain form of trust called social trust may actually impede EIC when it is supported by proprietary-standard interorganizational systems (proprietary-IOS). Instead, the presence of high social trust will encourage companies to adopt EIC supported by open-standard IOS (open-IOS).

Abstract:Organization research debates the question of whether good firms do bad things. To address this dispute, this study examines the relationship between performance above aspiration level (i.e., performance feedback) and corporate financial fraud. Building on the social categorization theory, we propose a curvilinear relationship between performance above aspiration level and corporate financial fraud. Specifically, either performance rises above aspiration still in the neighborhood of aspiration level or performance is well above aspiration level, a firm¡¯s probability of engaging financial fraud increases. Moreover, such curvilinear relationship is stronger for firms with higher level of state ownership. Results from a matched sample of listed firms in China support these hypotheses. It contributes to the corporate wrongdoing literature by offering a new theoretical perspective that explains the reasons why not all good firms do bad things.

Abstract:Firms benefit from being reliable and trustworthy towards their customers. In many countries, however, corruption spills over to supply chain relationship practices and weakens a firm's credibility towards its customers (CTC). In this study, we investigate the influence of corruption on the relationship between CTC and firm performance. Empirical analyses of manufacturing firms in multiple countries demonstrate that corruption diminishes the effect of CTC on firms' operational performance. Moreover, a country's information and communication technology (ICT) readiness can counteract the negative impact of corruption. Our study adds to the literature on supply chain relationship management by considering the influence of two institutional contingencies (i.e. corruption and ICT readiness) on the effectiveness of CTC as an important mechanism of supply chain governance. Our study complements the literature on transaction cost economics and urges managers to consider the two characteristics of their firms' institutional environments when managing relationships in their supply chains.

Abstract:In marketing channel researches,more attention is paid to the positive effect of inter-firm trust on performance.However,few studies explore the potential negative effects of sub-optimal trust on channel member's action and channel relationship performance.Based on transaction economic theory and relational exchange theory,this study develops a conceptual model covering sub-optimal trust (excessive trust and insufficient trust),information exchange between channel members and supplier's economic satisfaction.Using regression analysis approach based on 238 sample data from household machine manufactures in China,we examine our hypothesis.The empirical results reveal that supplier's excessive trust and insufficient trust both have negative effect on the information exchange between channel members and supplier's economic satisfaction;in addition information exchange between members is a mediator.Our research indicates the importance of optimal trust in channel relationship,and reveals the internal mechanism and path of relationship between sub-optimal trust with channel performance,which also has important guiding significance for inter-firm trust building and channel relationship management.

Abstract:This article introduces relationship fairness into the study on interfirm relationships.We use structural equation model to examine the path that relationship fairness affects cooperative performance through designing scale and collecting primary data.The empirical results show that distributive fairness factor and procedural fairness factor can promote cooperative performance through upgrading integrity trust and ability trust.interactional fairness factor can enhance the level of benevolence trust,but hasn't substantive effect on cooperative performance.

Abstract:Based on signaling theory, we explore the impact of corporate fraud on firms' innovation performance. First, we propose that corporate fraud harms firms' innovation performance. This is because, as a negative signal, fraud makes it difficult for firms to obtain the policy, funding, and human resources needed for outstanding innovation performance. We further argue that the institutional aspects of the signaling environment (e.g., industrial competition, regional institutional development, and social trust) will influence core stakeholders' reception and interpretation of fraud signals. These factors, in turn, moderate the signaling effect of corporate fraud on firms' innovation performance. Our views are supported by empirical and robustness tests using Chinese A-share listed firms from 2010 to 2019.

Abstract:This paper explores the mechanism by which trust climate influences individual performance. From the perspective of psychological dynamics, we investigate the relationship among perceptions of organizational climate, motivation and individual behaviors to crystallize how a trustworthy organizational environment favors superior individual performance. 203 employees and their supervisors participated in this study, the results show that trust climate benefits individual performance through fostering psychological safety, which in turn influences individual performance via two mutually complementary pathways, namely ability to focus and organizational learning. Psychological safety is conducive to increasing individual ability to focus and improving job performance. Moreover, it is also instrumental in enhancing individual willingness to learn and experiment with new methods as an effort to achieve superior performance. Theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.

Abstract:This article classifies trust into intraorganizational trust,interpersonal trust,interorganizational trust and institutional trust.Based on this,we review the empirical literature on the relationship between trust and firm performance.Look into the literature,all the trust literature on hand focus on the first three kinds,but few literature on institutional trust.This is because western researches are based on developed and perfect market economy conditions and institutional trust is treated as exogenous or control variable.However,in the background of transition economy as China,formal institutions and enforcement mechanisms are lack.Thus,trust in China is different from that of the West,and the effect of trust on firm performance may be stronger and more significant Therefore,trust research of China should consider the constraints of institution and culture conditions,and their effects on trust should treated as endogenous variables.

Abstract:Engaging partner firms in open innovation is critical to overcoming internal resource/capability constraints to achieve firm and supply chain circular economy (CE) performance, yet scholars have not examined this link empirically. Further, while researchers have repeatedly emphasized trust as a key driver of open innovation performance, little is known from a dyadic trust perspective (e.g., congruence vs. incongruence, high–high congruence vs. low–low congruence). To fill these gaps, we propose a theoretical model based on the social exchange theory (SET) and test it using a dyadic dataset of listed Chinese manufacturing firms. The results suggest that 1) rather than unilateral trust from the focal firm or its partners, trust congruence is more predictive of successful open process and product innovations, 2) regarding congruence types (low–low vs. high–high), congruence at higher levels of trust facilitates open product innovation more than low–low trust congruence; interestingly, such an effect is not significant for open process innovation, 3) open process innovation has a positive influence on the focal firm's CE performance, but its impact on supply chain CE performance is not statistically significant, and 4) open product innovation has a significantly positive impact on the focal firm and supply chain CE performance. Our findings still hold after analyzing time-lagged models and alternative measurements as robustness checks. Our study provides meaningful theoretical contributions to the literature and useful, practical insights for managing inter-organizational relationships, open innovation, and CE performance.

Can Trustworthiness in a Supply Chain Be Signaled?

Abstract:The relationship between a buyer and its suppliers often relies on factors beyond the terms of a contractual agreement. Buyers can therefore benefit from identifying trustworthy suppliers. We argue that precontractual actions by a supplier, for example making costly buyer-specific investments without a long-term contract, can signal a supplier’s trustworthiness. We develop a theoretical model to reflect supplier trustworthiness, and determine when a buyer can benefit from identifying trustworthy suppliers. We show that costly relationship-specific investments can serve as a signal of trustworthiness, and that supply chain profits increase when trustworthy suppliers are able to identify themselves in this fashion. We demonstrate the importance of the signaling mechanism using laboratory experiments. The experimental results show that relationship-specific investments lead to more collaborative transactions, with buyers offering higher prices and suppliers returning higher-quality products. This results in increased profits for both buyers and suppliers. Additionally, we design a treatment which shuts down the signaling mechanism and show that the benefits of the buyer-specific investment are no longer present in this case. Finally, we show that the benefits of buyer-specific investments for both suppliers and buyers are strengthened when firms interact repeatedly. Abstract:In recent years,organizational trust has been considered as the key factor that enterprises acquire competitive advantage.Many scholars believe that knowledge sharing has intermediary role between organizational trust and organizational performance,but only few of empirical results were given.An empirical study on interaction among organizational trust,knowledge sharing,and organizational performance is conducted.The sample includes 120 companies in Southern China.The validity of organizational trust,knowledge sharing,and organizational performance is tested separately based on the preliminary study.The study proves that organizational trust has a significant positive impact on the knowledge sharing and it has a significant positive impact on the organizational performance by knowledge sharing,that is,knowledge sharing among employees has an intermediary role between organizational trust and organizational performance.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to answer following three important but not well-answered or unanswered questions in the extant trust literatures: What is the true magnitude that trust impacts on performance? Is there any consistency among the effects of trust on performance at different levels? How does vertical distance affect the trust-performance relationship? Design/methodology/approach It captures the law between trust and performance at different levels by conducting a meta-analytic examination consisting of 238 independent empirical studies, 586 effect sizes and 110,576 independent samples. Findings It makes a periodic conclusion that trust significantly promotes performance. Specifically, trust not only has stronger positive correlation with team performance than individual and organizational performance inside organization, but also strongly facilitates organizational performance between organizations. Moreover, consistency exits in the effects of trust on performance at different levels. On one hand, trust has stronger positive correlation with performance of contextual type than performance of innovative type than performance of task type at different levels. On the other hand, promotion effect of trust on performance strengthens when the vertical distance between trustors and trustees diminishes. Additionally, three potential moderators including publication status, measurement tool and common method variance moderate the focused relation, but moderating effect is not thorough for regional culture. Moderating directions of the above four potential moderators are highly consistent. Originality/value This paper answers the three important but not well-answered or unanswered questions.

Abstract:Research into two important control mechanisms for managing the supply chain relationship – contracts and trust – is on the rise. However, our understanding of how they influence innovation in a firm remains rather unclear. Thus, the primary objective of this study is to examine the individual and interactive effects of contracts and trust on firms' innovation performance and the contingent effects of environmental uncertainty on those relationships in China. The empirical results from a survey of Chinese manufacturing firms indicate that there is a positive relationship between trust and firms' innovation performance, an inverted U-shaped relationship between the use of contracts and firms' innovation performance, and that contracts and trust are substitutes. Moreover, we find that environmental uncertainty enhances the effects of trust, but does not influence the impact of contracts on innovation performance.

Abstract:Does social trust restrain or exacerbate the opportunistic behaviors of corporate insiders? On the one hand, insiders susceptible to a high-trust environment will be less opportunistic; on the other hand, unethical insiders may exploit high-trust people to engage in more opportunistic behaviors. This paper tests the two competing hypotheses by investigating how trust surrounding corporate headquarters affects insider trading profitability, assuming that opportunistically informed trades have higher trading profits. We show that social trust negatively affects insiders' trading gains. This relationship holds after instrumental variable regressions and a difference-in-difference framework. Additionally, the role of trust is more prominent when insiders face more trading opportunities from information asymmetry, weak monitoring, and concentrated ownership structure; however, the impact of trust attenuates when formal regulations are in place. We also examine the indirect channels, including cautious financial reporting, informative disclosure, and active communications with investors through which social trust can deter informed trading. Our findings suggest that social trust can discourage opportunistic proclivity and spur more ethical deeds among managers.

Abstract:Satisfaction experience(SE) has long been neglected over the past years in the research of inter-organizational relationship.This paper examines the causal chain between SE and trust-commitment from TSE,ISE and RSE based on 299 China's self-reports and actual data,with the intention to explore its effect on customer compliance and performance.The results show that TSE,ISE and RSE lead to positive trust-commitment and trust in turn affects compliance,whereas commitment has no significant effect on selling.And the relationship phase exerts significant impact on customers' actual purchasing and at the matured-phase customers buy more.

Abstract:A mass of literature has discussed in Chinese private firms.Many anecdotal evidences also show that trust among top management team members affects the performance of a firm greatly.This article tries to discuss the relationship between the trust in TMT and the strategic decision performance.Through the empirical study,we find that the degree of trust in TMT in Chinese private firms is closely associated with the social interaction between TMT members and that trust influences the performance of strategic decision directly.
