Abstract:A process for oxidation of p-xylene(PX) with mol ec ular oxygen at elevated temperature and under liquid phase conditions in the pre sence of catalyst comprised of cobalt, manganese and bromide components, where p recipitation of the manganese catalyst occurred under certain conditions which a ffected the reaction process and the terephthalic acid(TA)quality. The dark gr ay precipitation was characterized by XRD and confirmed as MnO 1.88 crystal lite. Cobalt and manganese concentration in the mother liquor were obtain by AAS . In this study, several factors (such as water?solvent ratio(HAC/PX)?mangan ese and bromide concentration) that can affect the precipitation of manganese we re investigated systematically, After clarifying the catalysis mechanism of the oxidation process, the author brought forward the Mn precipitation mechanism.

Abstract:The catalyst system of cobalt,manganese and bromine was used in the process of p -xylene (PX) liquid phase oxidation. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect during reaction. To investigate the distinctive role of each catalyst component,a series of PX oxidation experiments in different catalyst conditions such as Co/Mn ratios,bromine and total catalyst concentrations were carried out. The fractional kinetic model was used to fit the data and the rate constant for each oxidation step was obtained. The result showed that,in the experimental conditions under consideration,there existed an optimum ratio of cobalt vs manganese (Co/Mn=1) and the process was more sensitive to the change of bromine concentration than that of cobalt or manganese.

Abstract:p-Xylene liquid phase oxidation would be accelerated by the addition of zirconium or hafnium ions to the Co/Mn/Br catalyst system. In this paper, the activating catalysis mechanisms of Zr and Hf promoters were presented concisely, and a series of PX oxidation experiments at different Zr and Hf concentrations were carried out. A well-known kinetic model was employed to fit the data and the rate constant for each oxidation step was obtained. The rate constant data show that the effect of Zr and Hf additives on the reaction rate of different stages of PX oxidation is various, and hafnium is more active than zirconium. In the other hand, CO_X productions data illustrate that the burning rate increase with adding Zr and Hf in a different extent.

Abstract:Liquid-phase catalytic oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid was performed at 150-210 degrees C over Co-Mn- Br catalyst system. There was an interesting synergistic effect of cobalt and manganese catalyst. In the previous papers (Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 2005,44, 261- 266; 4518-4522; 7756-7760), a lumped kinetic scheme and a fractional kinetic model for the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene were proposed and tested, and the effects of catalyst concentration, water content, and guanidine catalyst additive were investigated. In this paper, the synergistic effect of cobalt and manganese on the oxidation kinetics was studied. Experiments of several levels of Co/Mn ratio and temperature were carried out in a semibatch oxidation reactor where the gas and liquid phases were well-mixed. The results showed that the variation of the Co/Mn ratio in the catalyst did affect the activity and selectivity of the catalyst system. For the main reaction, there existed an optimum Co/Mn ratio at which the rates of the latter two slower oxidation steps of p-toluic acid and 4-carboxybenzaldehyde reached the maximum, and the optimum Co/Mn ratio decreased with the increase of reaction temperature. However, the burning side reaction of reactant and solvent due to carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide formation increased remarkably with the increase of Co/Mn ratio. A possible mechanism that the optimum Co/Mn ratio presents in the oxidation was proposed eventually.

Abstract:The reasons of introducing Co,Mn,Br catalyst in the reaction and the catalytic mechanism are discussed.The high selectivity and high activity of Amoco process catalyst system are obtained with the synergistic effect of Co/Mn/Br.In HAc solvent,the whole free-radical chain reaction is initiated by Co 3+ with high oxidation ability.But as the temperature is high(130℃),Co 3+ will strong decarboxylate,the selectivity,activity of it will sharp decreased with the increasing of temperature.Br will complexation with Co,the half period of Co 3+ will be reduced,decarboxylate will be weakened.When Co is replaced by Mn in same amount of subslance,the oxidation speed of PT will increased 4.3 times,the activity of Co/Mn/Br system is 11 times than that of Co/Mn system.
Effect of oxygen volume fraction on p-xylene liquid phase catalytic oxidation

Abstract:Experiments on p-xylene liquid phase oxidation at different oxygen volume fraction of 3%-37% were carried out to investigate the effect of oxygen volume fraction on main and combustion reactions. A fractional kinetic model was employed to fit the data. The influence of oxygen volume fraction on the rate constants can be represented by a fractional-like relationship. The result shows that the effect of oxygen volume fraction on the reactions decreases with the increase of volume fraction over a schwellenwert value of 7%. In the range of 4%-5% of industrial reaction conditions, the influence of oxygen volume fraction is more remarkable on combustion reaction than on main reaction.

Abstract:In previous papers [Wang, Q.; Li, X.; Wang, L.; Cheng, Y.; Xie, G. Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 2005, 44 (2), 261-266; 2005, 44 (13), 4518-4522], a lumped kinetic scheme and a fractional kinetic model for the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene catalyzed by Co-Mn-Br was proposed and tested and the effect of water on the oxidation reaction kinetics was investigated. In this paper the effect of guanidine catalyst additive on the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid over Co-Mn-Br catalyst system was studied. Experiments on four levels of guanidine composition were carried out in a semibatch oxidation reactor where the gas and liquid phases were well mixed. The results show that the addition of guanidine apparently accelerates the oxidation of the second methyl group. However, for the oxidation of the first methyl group there is an optimal guanidine composition omega(0). When the composition of guanidine is lower than omega(0), the oxidation rates for the first methyl group increase with the increase of guanidine composition, whereas when the composition of guanidine is higher than omega(0), the oxidation rates decrease with the increase of guanidine composition. Moreover, the addition of guanidine inhibits the side reactions remarkably. A possible mechanism for interpretation of the effect of guanidine on the oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid is presented.
The Effect of Temperature and Oxygen Concentration on P-Xylene Oxidation

Abstract:Experiments of p xylene liquid phase oxidation at different temperatures of 185～197 ℃and oxygen volume fraction of 3%～37% are carried out to investigate the temperature and oxygen concentration effect on p xylene oxidation. A hyperbolic kinetics model is employed to fit the data. The obtained activation energy of different reaction steps ranges from 54 to 93 kJ/mol, among them the activation energy of PT acid to 4 CBA step is the highest (92.8 kJ/mol). The rate constants obtained and oxygen concentration can be well represented by a hyperbolic relationship. The result shows that the rate of reaction will not increase visibly when the oxygen volume fraction exceeds 7%. In the range of 4%～5% of industrial reactor, the reaction rate is about 90% of the highest reaction rate.

Abstract:A series of highly active manganese oxide with different oxygen species were synthesized by one pot method, wherein the active species were induced by in-situ combination of crystal phase. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed the successful combination of rodlike MnO2 and flowerlike MnO2. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated an increase in the oxygen defects due to the in-situ assembly. Compared with that of pure α-MnO2 and β-MnO2, the combined-phase xα/yβ-MnO2 ((x, y represents the molar ratio of α and δ) presented the higher activities for the catalytic oxidation of toluene. Through the analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (H2-TPR) technologies, the order of catalytic activity was completely consistent with the change trend of the hydrogen consumption and the molar ratio of adsorbed oxygen/lattice oxygen (Oads/Olatt), showing that the high catalytic activities of catalysts were main attributed to their more low-valent manganese and high content of adsorbed oxygen. Moreover, the intermediates of toloune oxidation over α/β-MnO2 with the best catalytic activity were detected by in-situ diffuse reflectance FTIR spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and the by-products in the exhaust gases were detected by a thermal desorption/gas chromatograph mass spectrometer (TD/GC–MS), which confirmed the presence of the intermediates. Furthermore, the catalytic mechanism and degradation path of toluene oxidation have been studied in depth. Finally, the effect of moisture on catalytic activity of α/δ-MnO2 for toluene oxidation were also discussed.

Abstract:Manganese dioxide was synthesized from potassium permanganate solution and triethanolamine ionic liquid.Phase composition and morphology of manganese dioxide were studied by XRD and scanning electron microscopy.Using acid fuchsin as a degradation object,catalytic property of manganese dioxide was studied.The results show that catalyst dosage,hydrogen peroxide dosage,pH value and calcination temperature have significant impact on the degradation activity of the catalyst.The optimal degradation conditions of acid fuchsin are as follows: manganese dioxide 0.05 g,pH 7,hydrogen peroxide 2 mL.Experiments also show that high-temperature calcination can reduce the catalyst activity.

Abstract:Fe-MnO2 nanocomposite was prepared via a redox–precipitation method combined with a subsequent aging treatment at low-temperature. Various characterizations showed that Fe was incorporated into MnO2 lattice that changed the relative intensity of MnO2 crystal planes. Thus, the structural defect was formed and the anisotropic growth of the MnO2 crystallite phase was suppressed. As a result, the morphology of MnO2 was transformed from nanowires to nanoparticles. In addition, the catalytic property of Fe-MnO2 was significantly enhanced than that of pristine MnO2 for the complete oxidation of o-xylene. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for regulating MnO2 texture and activity.

Abstract:The effects of precursors and Mn loading amounts on Mn/Al2O3 catalysts for plasma-catalytic removal of o-xylene were systematically investigated. Catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, and H-2-TPR. Experimental results show that o-xylene conversion was greatly increased even at very low specific energy density with addition of Mn/Al2O3 catalysts. The Mn/Al2O3 catalyst prepared with a manganese acetate precursor had the highest catalytic activity for o-xylene removal. Among tested loading amounts, 6 wt% Mn loading was the optimum condition for preparation of catalysts for o-xylene conversion. The presence of more Mn4+ species, higher proportion of lattice oxygen and microcrystalline MnO2 phase on the surface of catalysts was responsible for the high catalytic activity for o-xylene removal. To compare with Mn/Al2O3 catalysts prepared with manganese acetate precursor, alpha-MnO2/Al2O3 with more Me4+ and lattice oxygen on the surface was also prepared. The o-xylene conversion, CO2 selectivity, and (CO + CO2) (i.e. COx) yield increased with introduction of alpha-MnO2/Al2O3 catalyst, which was due to the high oxidation ability of alpha-MnO2/Al2O3 induced by higher amounts of Me4+ and lattice oxygen. The concentrations of O-3 and NOx byproducts greatly decreased when catalysts were used. The FT-IR spectrum show that CH3CHO, O-3, NOx and HNO3 products were formed without catalyst, while HCOOH/CH3COOH formation occurred with catalysts. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Removing manganese from zinc electrolytes is necessary to pave the way for replacing lead-based anodes with mixed metal oxide (MMO) anodes. MMO anodes offer significantly lower overpotential towards oxygen evolution reactions, thus are attractive from an energy consumption viewpoint. Previous studies had shown that, thanks to the catalytic effect of cobalt, manganese can be removed successfully from the zinc purification solution through the oxidative precipitation method using a simulated roasting off-gas plant. This study focuses on understanding the primary mechanism behind manganese oxidation precipitation and investigating the influence of various operating parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and solution potential on the reaction kinetics. The results revealed that the kinetics of the reaction was highly dependent on the temperature and catalyst activity rather than on the reactant concentration. Additives, with radical scavenging effects, were added to identify the radicals responsible for the oxidation of Mn. The manganese oxidation reaction was dramatically suppressed when methanol was added. However, in the presence of tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), a sensible reduction in manganese removal was not observed, suggesting sulfate radical as the predominant species for oxidizing manganese. The physical and chemical characteristics of the sediments were also presented.

Advantage of Microreactor on the Synthesis of High-Activity Cu-Mn Catalyst by Co-Precipitation

Abstract:Cu-Mn coprecipitates with different copper manganese molar ratios were synthesised by co-precipitation method in the Caterpillar microreactor, and Cu-Mn composite oxide catalysts were prepared after calcining. The phase and structure of the precipitates and catalysts were analyzed by X-ray diffraction（XRD）, thermogravimetric analysis（TG）, Raman spectroscopy（Raman spectrum） and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）. The results show that with the content of Cu increasing, the proportion of Mn 3+ in the catalyst decreased gradually, the content of the surface lattice oxygen increased first and then decreased, and the catalytic performance of oxidation of toluene increased first and then decreased. The flow reaction characteristics of microreactor make Cu and Mn element in the catalyst maintain good dispersion, which contributes to increasing the content of Mn 3+ in the catalyst. On the basis of high Mn 3+ catalyst, the surface lattice oxygen becomes the dominating factor of catalytic performance.

Abstract:Mn-O/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method and were characterized by XRD, TPR and TPD-MS. The oxidation activity of CO on these catalysts was also studied. The results indicated that the interaction between MnOx and ZrO2 would restrained the phase transformation of ZrO2; and raised the dispersion of MnOx species on ZrO2. The highly-dispersed MnOx on ZrO2 is predominant contributors in catalytic activity of the Mn-O/ZrO2 catalysts.

Abstract:Copper manganese oxides (Cu–Mn oxides) were prepared by coprecipitation method and characterized by several techniques, such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). Catalytic activities of the Cu–Mn oxides were tested by the oxidation of toluene with molecular oxygen in liquid phase and solvent-free conditions. The molar ratio of Cu:Mn in catalyst was optimized to be 1:1 and thus the corresponding crystalline material was designated as Cu1.5Mn1.5O4.

Insight into the effect of manganese substitution on mesoporous hollow spinel cobalt oxides for catalytic oxidation of toluene

Abstract:The cobalt oxides and manganese oxides have high-activity potential for catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), while the mesoporous hollow morphology is crucial to the mass transfer of reactant and product. Therefore, it is worth investigating the effect of manganese substitution in mesoporous hollow cobalt oxides on catalytic oxidation. Herein, a partially disordered spinel structure is formed by the Mn substitution in Co3O4 and the mesoporous hollow microsphere is improved in morphology homogeneity with the decrease of Co/Mn ratio in the range of 1.8-28.8. The 5Co1Mn (Mn-substituted Co3O4 with Co/Mn at 5.4) exhibits outstanding catalytic activity for toluene oxidation with 50% CO2 generation at 237 oC, which is 21 oC lower than Co3O4. Moreover, the 5Co1Mn displays satisfactory stability in reusability, lifetime, and water resistance. The small defective crystallite, mesoporous hollow morphology, and high specific surface area endow Mn-substituted Co3O4 with more surface chemical adsorbed oxygen, enhancing the catalytic oxidation of toluene. Theoretical calculation on (311) plane of Co3O4 reveals that Mn2+ or Mn3+ substitution increases the formation energy of oxygen vacancy and makes it difficult to adsorb gaseous oxygen on the defective surface. The interaction between Co and Mn impedes the improvement of toluene oxidation because the mobility of lattice oxygen, the surface distribution of Co3+, and the ratio of surface adsorbed oxygen to surface lattice oxygen are hindered by Mn substitution. The chemical adsorbed oxygen is more active than lattice oxygen in the oxidation of adsorbed intermediates (phenolate, benzoate species, etc.). The Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism dominates in the catalytic oxidation at 200-250 oC, while the catalytic oxidation follows both the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism and Mars-van Krevelen mechanism above 250 oC. This work provides some enlightenment for exploring the role of surface oxygen species in VOCs oxidation and uncovering the interaction in binary spinel oxides.

Abstract:The impact of synthesis method on catalytic performances of MnOx–SnO2 was studied for controlling formaldehyde emission during cold start and warm-up periods of methanol-gasoline/diesel fuel vehicles. MnOx–SnO2 synthesized by a redox co-precipitation method exhibited much higher activity towards complete oxidation of formaldehyde than that by a conventional co-precipitation one. The results of XPS, XRD and H2-TPR characterizations revealed that higher oxidation state of manganese, the formation of solid solution between MnOx and SnO2, and more facile redox capability were responsible for higher activity.
Insight into the pH effect over the oxygen species and Mn chemical valence of Co-Mn catalysts for the total toluene oxidation

Abstract:Mn-based metal oxides have shown promising performance in catalytic oxidation of toluene since the mixed valences of Mn3+ and Mn4+ on the surface. Herein, a series of Co-Mn catalysts were synthesized by adjusting the redox precipitation pH to explore the effect of pH on Mn3+, Mn4+ and the surface adsorbed oxygen species when applied for toluene combustion. The Co-Mn-12 catalyst fabricated in pH = 12 displayed the excellent catalytic activity and stability for the toluene oxidation of which the T90 at 20 000 mL g-1 h-1 was of 208 °C. The toluene conversion could maintain at around 100% even with the introducing of 10 vol.% H2O at 230 °C. We found the appropriate pH promoted the generation of more Mn3+ and Co3+ ions, which were conducive to the formation of oxygen vacancy and resulted in more absorbed oxygen species generated on the catalysts surface. Moreover, in situ DRIFTS spectra displayed that the existing of Mn3+ and the oxygen vacancy stimulated the production of hydroperoxyl-like groups introduced by H2O, facilitated the activation of O–O bond and enhanced the oxygen supply in the oxidation process. Therefore, Co-Mn-12 demonstrated the best catalytic activity and water-resistance, illustrating it is an efficient potential industrial catalyst for removing toluene.

Abstract:Abstract In order to make full use of the impact of internal and external factors on the performance of title catalyst for ethyl benzene oxidation, the key internal influencing factors on the catalytic performance were modulated by coordinating and grafting manganese porphyrin to mesoporous and macroporous chitosan, and the important external factors (i.e. oxidation reaction conditions) were optimized using Response Surface Methodology. Under the Response Surface Methodology optimized oxidation reaction conditions (176.56 °C, 0.59 MPa, and 0.25 mg amount of manganese porphyrin), the catalyst could be used at least five times. The ethyl benzene conversion, catalyst turnover numbers, and yields reached up to 51.2%, 4.37 × 10 6 and 36.4% in average, respectively. Compared with the other optimized oxidation reaction conditions, the corresponding values increased 17%, 26% and 53%.
