Abstract:Carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) are widely utilized in flexible and wearable electronics due to their outstanding electrical and mechanical properties. However, the spinning process of CNTFs has limited the CNTs from exposure, leading to an ultralow usage efficiency of individual CNTs. Here, we propose an electrochemical expansion strategy of a single CNTF at the liquid-air interface, forming a macroscopic spindle-shaped CNTF (SS-CNTF) with an enlarged volume of up to 5000-fold upon the spindle. The obtained spindle-shaped structure endows CNTF with a high specific surface area together with excellent conductivity and good mechanical properties. Therefore, the SS-CNTF-based devices exhibit outstanding performances both in energy storage (electrical double-layer supercapacitor, energy density: 11.22 Wh kg-1, power density: 203.9 kW kg-1) and electrochemical sensing (ascorbic acid: 1.26 μA μM-1 cm-2; dopamine: 103.91 μA μM-1 cm-2; uric acid: 11.53 μA μM-1 cm-2). The novel architecture of SS-CNTF prepared by one-step electrochemical expansion at the liquid-air interface enabled its high performance in multiple applications, providing new insight into the development of CNTF-based devices.

Abstract:We explored supercapacitor devices by utilizing 3-D highly porous (with average pore size of ∼80nm) carbon nanotube sponges as a conductive substrate for polyaniline deposition. The porous structure of the sponge is beneficial for precursor penetration and uniform deposition of polyaniline on to the nanotubes. The self-supported, free-standing and flexible carbon nanotube polyaniline composite structure does not require any conductive additives or mechanical binders and delivers excellent areal capacitance (1.85–1.62F/cm2 in the 4.9–49mA/cm2 current density range) coupled with high rate capability and cycle stability.

Abstract:A carbon nanotube (CNT) sponge contains a three-dimensional conductive nanotube network, and can be used as a porous electrode for various energy devices. We present here a rational strategy to fabricate a unique CNT@polypyrrole (PPy) core-shell sponge, and demonstrate its application as a highly compressible supercapacitor electrode with high performance. A PPy layer with optimal thickness was coated uniformly on individual CNTs and inter-CNT contact points by electrochemical deposition and crosslinking of pyrrole monomers, resulting in a core-shell configuration. The PPy coating significantly improves specific capacitance of the CNT sponge to above 300 F/g, and simultaneously reinforces the porous structure to achieve better strength and fully elastic structural recovery after compression. The CNT@PPy sponge can sustain 1,000 compression cycles at a strain of 50% while maintaining a stable capacitance (> 90% of initial value). Our CNT@PPy core-shell sponges with a highly porous network structure may serve as compressible, robust electrodes for supercapacitors and many other energy devices.

Abstract:Self-standing NiCO2S4 nanotube arrays have been in situ grown on Ni foam by the anion-exchange reaction and directly used as the electrode for supercapacitors. The NiCO2S4 nanotube in the arrays effectively reduces the inactive material and increases the electroactive surface area because of the ultrathin wall, which is quite competent to achieve high utilization efficiency at high electroactive materials mass loading. The NiCO2S4 nanotube arrays hybrid electrode exhibits an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 14.39 F cm(-2) at 5 mA cm(-2) with excellent rate performance (67.7% retention for current increases 30 times) and cycling stability (92% retention after 5000 cycles) at a high mass loading of 6 mg cm(-2). High areal capacitance (4.68 F cm(-2) at 10 mA cm(-2)), high energy density (31.5 Wh kg(-1) at 156.6 W kg(-1)) and high power density (2348.5 W kg(-1) at 16.6 Wh kg(-1)) can be achieved by assembling asymmetric supercapacitor with reduced graphene oxide at a total active material mass loading as high as 49.5 mg. This work demonstrates that NiCO2S4 nanotube arrays structure is a superior electroactive material for high-performance supercapacitors even at a mass loading of potential application-specific scale. Abstract:Increasing the specific surface area and the amount of doping heteroatoms is an effective means to improve the electrochemical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The usual activation method makes it difficult for the retention of the heteroatoms while enlarging the specific surface area, and it can be found from literatures that specific surface area and S-content of carbon-based electrode materials are mutually exclusive. Here, CNTs with high specific surface area and sulfur content are constructed by simple activation of sulfonated polymer nanotubes with KHCO3, and the excellent electrochemical performance can be explained by the following points: first, KHCO3 can be decomposed into K2CO3, CO2 and H2O during the activation process. The synergistic action of physical activation (CO2 and H2O) and chemical activation (K2CO3) equips the electrode material with high specific surface area of 1840 m2 g−1 and hierarchical micro/mesopores, which is beneficial to its double-layer capacitance. Second, compared with reported porous CNTs prepared by chemical activation (KOH) or physical activation (CO2 or H2O), the mild activator KHCO3 makes the sulfur content at a high level of 4.6 at%, which is very advantageous for high pseudocapacitance performance.

Abstract:Semiconducting nanoparticles with lower bandgap (e.g., CdS) are alternative photocatalysts to TiO2, since they have a potentially wider range light of absorption and improved catalytic efficiency. However, they must be securely anchored on a porous substrate for practical applications. Here, we report a hybrid porous photocatalyst fabricated by grafting 4–6 nm diameter CdS nanoparticles uniformly throughout the entire macroporous structure of a three-dimensional carbon nanotube (CNT) sponge. The unique feature of our structure is that only the CdS nanoparticles grafted on the outside surface are active in photocatalysis, while other nanoparticles are stored inside the sponge in the fresh state for use when the catalyst is recycled. Our CdS-CNT hybrid sponges show high efficiency in removing organic contaminants from water. Spectroscopic measurements show that the hybrid sponges are multifunctional, simultaneously performing organic molecular adsorption (using the inter-CNT spacing), and photocatalytic decomposition (by the CdS nanoparticles grafted on the surface), both of which contribute to water purification. Furthermore, the surface part of the sponges can be stripped off to expose inner nanoparticles for use when the catalyst is recycled, without performance degradation.

Abstract:Macroscopic and 3D superaligned CNT (SACNT) sponges are fabricated through a simple, low-cost, controllable, and scalable self-assembly method without using organic binder. Sponges with specific shapes and densities can be achieved. SACNT sponges are ultralight (1-50 mg cm(-3)), highly porous (97.5%-99.9%) with honeycomb-like hierarchical structure, and highly conductive. Using SACNT sponges as templates, various materials with honeycomb-like structure can be obtained for wide applications.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) aerogels and sponges are macroscopic porous materials with a unique isotropic structure. CNTs make an interconnected 3D scaffold, therefore the resulting aerogels are robust, highly conductive, and flexible, enabling a much broader range of applications than aligned arrays and thin films, especially in energy and environmental areas. A comprehensive overview of the recent progress in isotropic CNT‐based macroscopic structures is provided, including their synthesis methods, structural characteristics, mechanical properties, and deformation mechanism, as well as potential applications in energy and environmental fields. In particular, this study focuses on the CNT sponges developed, which are high‐performance porous materials with many distinct properties such as their versatile deformations and shape recovery. Importantly, the CNT sponges provide a universal platform for designing and manufacturing a variety of hierarchical functional composites by introducing polymers or inorganic guests, thus greatly extend application areas from highly compressible electrodes for supercapacitors and batteries, catalysis, to environmental cleanup. Future research directions and associated challenges in this field are proposed.

Abstract:Optimization of the transport behaviors of ions and electrons is the key for the property improvement of supercapacitor, which are essentially controlled by the design of hierarchical porous structure and electrical conductive backbone, from nanoscale to microscale, respectively. However, such design requirements are very difficult to be satisfied simultaneously, because the generation of porosity would result to the detrimental effects on the electrical conductivity of electrode. In this study, we propose to prepare a hierarchical porous supercapacitor electrode, with a novel 3-D highly porous (with pore size in the range of 50-100 nm) carbon nanotube sponges (CNTS) as a conductive substrate for the successively deposition of metal organic frameworks (MOF) and polyaniline. The porous structure of the sponge is beneficial for precursor penetration and uniform deposition of MOF and polyaniline (PANI) on to the nanotubes. The highly porous CNTS not only provides conductive highway for electrons, but also channels for ions quick diffusion. The coated MOF offers extra ion storage reservoir, while PANI further wire the insulating MOF together. In addition, the composite structure does not require any conductive additives or mechanical binders and delivers excellent capacitance coupled with flexible, compressive, and have relatively high specific capacitance. Highly Deformation-Tolerant Carbon Nanotube Sponges As Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:Developing flexible and deformable supercapacitor electrodes based on porous materials is of high interest in energy related fields. Here, we show that carbon nanotube sponges, consisting of highly porous conductive networks, can serve as compressible and deformation-tolerant supercapacitor electrodes in aqueous or organic electrolytes. In aqueous electrolytes, the sponges maintain a similar specific capacitance (>90% of the original value) under a predefined compressive strain of 50% (corresponding to a volume reduction of 50%), and retain more than 70% of the original capacitance under 80% strain while the volume normalized capacitance increases by 3-fold. The sponge electrode maintains a stable performance after 1000 large strain compression cycles. A coin-shaped cell assembled with these sponges shows excellent stability over 15,000 charging cycles with negligible degradation after 500 cycles. Our results indicate that carbon nanotube sponges have the potential to fabricate deformable supercapacitor electrodes with stable performance.

Abstract:Macroscopic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with uniform structures are in great demand for use in composites and environmental materials. Here we demonstrate the controlled synthesis of spongy CNT blocks with isotropic properties and flexible, freestanding structures. The formation mechanism of the isotropic CNT sponges is discussed, based on its open-ended structure and initial formation in the vapor phase. The microstructure of the CNT sponges can be tuned by changing the flow rate of the carrier gas, resulting in CNT sponges with diameters ranging from 30.2 to 47.8 nm and wall thicknesses from 7 to 16 nm. The bulk density (5-25 mg cm(-3)), mechanical strength of the CNT sponges, and filling rate of ferromagnetic catalyst in the CNT sponges can also be modulated by controlling the supply rate of the carbon source, suggesting potential applications in mechanical energy absorption and environmental materials.

Oxygenated Surface of Carbon Nanotube Sponges: Electroactivity and Magnetic Studies

Abstract:We report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube sponges (N-CNSs) by pyrolysis of solutions of benzylamine, ferrocene, thiophene, and isopropanol-based mixture at 1020 °C for 4 h using an aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition system. The precursors were transported through a quartz tube using a dynamic flow of H2/Ar. We characterized the N-CNSs by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. We found that isopropanol, isopropanol-ethanol, and isopropanol-acetone as precursors promote the formation of complex-entangled carbon fibers making knots and junctions. The N-CNSs displayed an outstanding oxygen concentration reaching a value of 9.2% for those synthesized with only isopropanol. We identified oxygen and nitrogen functional groups; in particular, the carbon fibers produced using only isopropanol exhibited a high concentration of ether groups (C-O bonds). This fact suggests the presence of phenols, carboxyl, methoxy, ethoxy, epoxy, and more complex functional groups. Usually, the functionalization of graphitic materials is carried out through aggressive acid treatments; here, we offer an alternative route to produce a superoxygenated surface. The understanding of the chemical surface of these novel materials represents a huge challenge and offers an opportunity to study complex oxygen functional groups different from the conventional quinone, carboxyl, phenols, carbonyl, methoxy, ethoxy, among others. The cyclic voltammetry measurements confirmed the importance of oxygen in N-CNSs, showing that with high oxygen concentration, the highest anodic and cathodic currents are displayed. N-CNSs displayed ferromagnetic behavior with an outstanding saturation magnetization. We envisage that our sponges are promising for anodes in lithium-ion batteries and magnetic sensor devices.

Abstract:The rational design and targeted synthesis of macroscopic and ultralight all-carbon sponges with satisfying electron/proton conductivity through a simple and environmentally friendly approach is challenging. Herein, three-dimensional carbon nanotube-graphene oxide (CNT-GO) hybrid hydrogels have been constructed by the gelation of an aqueous dispersion of graphene oxide (GO) induced by pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) without any additives or other crosslinkers. Upon reduction of CNT-GO hydrogels and removal of water by freeze-drying, the resulting carbon nanotube-graphene (CNT-G) aerogels exhibit a unique all-carbon continuous framework with a hierarchical porosity that allows high-rate transport of electrolyte ions and electrons throughout the electrode matrix. As a result, they show high specific energy (31.3 Whkg(-1)), high specific capacitance with excellent rate performance (approximate to 71% retention at 10 Ag-1) and cycling stability (approximate to 100% retention at 10 Ag-1 for 5000 cycles) in two electrode systems, and thus great potential as promising electrode materials for nextgeneration supercapacitors.
Single Carbon Fibers with a Macroscopic-Thickness, 3D Highly Porous Carbon Nanotube Coating

Abstract:Carbon fiber (CF) grafted with a layer of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) plays an important role in composite materials and other fields; to date, the applications of CNTs@CF multiscale fibers are severely hindered by the limited amount of CNTs grafted on individual CFs and the weak interfacial binding force. Here, monolithic CNTs@CF fibers consisting of a 3D highly porous CNT sponge layer with macroscopic-thickness (up to several millimeters), which is directly grown on a single CF, are fabricated. Mechanical tests reveal high sponge-CF interfacial strength owing to the presence of a thin transitional layer, which completely inhibits the CF slippage from the matrix upon fracture in CNTs@CF fiber-epoxy composites. The porous conductive CNTs@CF hybrid fibers also act as a template for introducing active materials (pseudopolymers and oxides), and a solid-state fiber-shaped supercapacitor and a fiber-type lithium-ion battery with high performances are demonstrated. These CNTs@CF fibers with macroscopic CNT layer thickness have many potential applications in areas such as hierarchically reinforced composites and flexible energy-storage textiles.

Abstract:Innovative three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanotube (CNT)/transition-metal oxide (TMO) sponge electrodes are synthesized by freeze-drying and calcination processes. The high specific surface area and porosity of the CNT sponge provide more attachment sites for the TMO nanoparticles, a larger contact area with electrolytes, and more space for volume expansion, which enable the CNT/TMO sponge electrodes to exhibit ultrahigh reversible capacity and excellent cycling stability. The continuous CNT network in this new type of electrode can fully satisfy fast electron-transfer kinetics; thus, excellent rate performance is realized. Furthermore, the unique structural characteristics of the 3D CNT sponge make it suitable for making almost all kinds of CNT/TMO composite electrodes, reflecting its versatility for use in many battery systems.

Abstract:At present, both easy agglomeration of carbon nanotubes themselves and waste caused by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) have great pollution, which limits the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). A large number of hollow polyhedrons containing N-doped carbon nanotubes and Co3O4 nanoparticles (Co3O4 NPs) were well fabricated on a biotemplate by hydrothermal method, stirring method and pyrolysis process. The regular polyhedron was uniformly arranged on the external surface of diatomite with a natural porous structure, which aims to avoid the agglomeration of CNTs. The electrochemical testing result shows that the composite has promising electrochemical performance, which is embodied in a high specific capacity 894.6 F/g at 2 A/g, good rate performance and high cycling property. Finally, an assembled Co3O4 NP@CNTs@Diatomite//GR asymmetric supercapacitor has maximal energy density of 36.8 Wh/kg and maximal power density of 16,326.6 W/kg. A New Strategy to Prepare Carbon Nanotube Thin Film by the Combination of Top-Down and Bottom-Up Approaches

Abstract:Bottom-up and top-down are two different strategies to prepare nano-materials and their assemblies, each with their own pro-and-cons. Here, we demonstrate a combined approach in preparing large area uniform carbon nanotube (CNT) thin films within minutes, several orders of magnitude faster than conventional methods. This strategy takes full advantage of the unique micro-structure of CNT sponges, synthesized by a bottom-up process and composed of physically entangled CNTs with uniform size and spatial distribution. Such a 3D network structure allows us to firstly transfer certain amount of structured CNTs from the sponge onto a Scotch tape. Through a second-step stamping process, which is essentially a top-down process, transparent and conductive (TCF) CNT films with controlled micro-structures are produced on viscous substrates. Bonding strength between the stamped CNT network and elastomer substrate can be adjusted to optimize the physical properties including the transparency and sheet resistance of the CNT thin films. Upon stretching, the device exhibits high piezoresistive responsiveness; combining high sensitivity, low hysteresis and large working strain range. The proposed methodology had been extended to fabricate micro-electrodes on patterned elastomers with same effectiveness. These experimental results highlight the high efficiency, low-cost and versatility of this approach in preparing TCF electrodes with different sizes and shapes.

Abstract:We have successfully prepared three dimensional carbon nanotube foams (CNTF) by a simple environmental-friendly method. However, the as-grown CNTF shows a high electrical conductivity but a reduced specific surface area which limits its application as electrode materials in energy storage devices. In this work, the as-grown CNTF has been activated by using certain concentration of KOH aqueous solution. The results indicate that activation can enlarge the specific surface area by producing new pores with sizes from micropore to macropore, but give no important change in shape and size of the CNTF. We take the activated CNTFs as electrodes for supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries respectively, and find that activation can clearly enhance the specific capacities and rate properties due to the enhanced specific surface area and hierarchical porous structures. The activated three dimensional CNTF materials can also be used as supporters for other active materials indicating a potential application prospects.
