Abstract:We reported a novel and effective strategy to achieve higher continuity at a lower volume fraction of interphase by using compatibilizers in ternary blend consisting of PVDF, PS and HDPE. PVDF-g-PS was synthesized by electron beam radiation induced free radical graft copolymerization reaction and PVDF-gPS was characterized by FTIR, DSC and H-1 NMR. PVDF-g-PS showed effective compatibilization in PVDF/PS binary blend. The phase size of PVDF/PS binary blend was decreased at addition of PVDF-g-PS. For phase morphology development, morphology of uncompatibilized PVDF/PS/HDPE ( 52/6/42 vol%) ternary blend revealed a part of PS droplets situated in PVDF/HDPE interface, the other part was located inside HDPE phase. Whereas, compatibilized blend showed more and more PS migrate to PVDF/HDPE interface. When adding 7% PVDF-g-PS, PS droplets formed into uniform layer self-assembly arrayed at interface, then tri-continuous morphology was formed and continuity of PS phase increased by 32%, ultralow percolation threshold ternary blend was successfully achieved. Abstract:Blends of polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS/PMMA) (30/70) prepared by simple melt mixing form a droplet (PS) in-matrix (PMMA) morphology. It is found that addition of a carefully designed copolymer PS-b-P(S-ran-MMA) (SSM) compatibilizer could convert the morphology into a co-continuous system. Indeed, the continuity of the dispersed PS phase increased with an increase in PS-b-P(S-ran-MMA) content, and a fully co-continuous morphology (continuity = 100%) was obtained at 20% SSM fraction with a characteristic size of 100 nm.

Abstract:Cocontinuous morphology was obtained for an asymmetric composition of polypropylene/polyamide 6 (70/30 w/w) blend by controlling melt compounding sequence of PP, PA6, and organoclay. Three different compounding sequences were tested: direct melt mixing of all the components, melt mixing of PP with PA6/organoclay masterbatch, and melt mixing of PP with premelted PA6/organoclay masterbatch. Only the third method promotes cocontinuous morphology. In all three cases, organoclay locates preferentially in the PA6 phase and at the interface, although the level of organoclay dispersion is poorer in the case of direct mixing than in the two-masterbatch approaches. The morphology evolution processes of the three different compounding sequences were investigated and revealed that the main reason for the formation of cocontinuous morphology in the third method is the inhibiting effect of organoclay preincluded in the premelted PA6 phase on phase inversion. The viscosity of PA6 phase and the barrier effect of organoclay were confirmed to be two key factors in promoting cocontinuous structure. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the blend having cocontinuous morphology displays higher storage modulus than those having matrix-dispersed morphology at the same organoclay loading. Abstract:In this work, PP/EPDM/HDPE ternary blends were applied. Morphologies and melt crystallization behavior, rheological property and mechanical properties of these blends were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), dynamic rheology analysis and mechanical properties tests. It was found that the viscosity of EPDM had greatly effect on the morphology of PP/EPDM/HDPE blends. The more perfect encapsulation structure (core of HDPE and shell of EPDM) can be formed in the PP/EPDM/HDPE 70/20/10 blend with lower viscosity EPDM2 and the Notched Izod impact strength of blend was greatly improved. The melting points of PP and HDPE in PP/EPDM1/HDPE blend decrease with the content of phenolic resin varying from 0.5 wt% to 1.5 wt% in two processing methods (the direct extrusion and lateral injection method). The ternary blends of PP/EPDM/HDPE prepared by two methods with different content of phenolic resin showed different rheological behavior: The storage (G') and loss modulus (G ") of blends obtained by the direct extrusion are slightly higher for low frequency region than that by the lateral injection technique in general opinion. The tensile strength of PP/EPDM1/HDPE blend added 0.5 wt% phenolic resin in direct extrusion is highest.

Abstract:To date, many advanced polymer processing technologies have been developed to tune the morphology of semicrystalline polymers, such as multiflow vibration injection molding (MFVIM). By adjusting the processing fields, i.e., shear and thermal fields, the material can be imparted with great mechanical properties, good electrical/thermal conductivity, or biomimic structure, by manipulating chain's orientation, crystal's arrangement, or hierarchical structure distribution. Despite the era of intelligent manufacturing approaching, there is rarely any report on the computer simulation of these advanced processing technologies. In this work, the processing fields of the MFVIM isotactic polypropylene/high-density polyethylene (iPP/HDPE) part are successfully simulated using Moldflow by designing a special model. Different thermal gradients can be realized in the plate part by setting different mold temperatures. The experimental results correlate well with the simulation results, and both of them illustrate that the mold temperature plays an important role in the morphology of dispersed PE phase resulting in different physical properties.

Abstract:Ternary blends composed of matrix polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with different proportions of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) blends were prepared by melt mixing. The miscibility, crystallization behavior, mechanical properties and hydrophilicity of the ternary blends have been investigated. The high compatibility of PVDF/PMMA/PVP ternary blends is induced by strong interactions between the carbonyl groups of the PMMA/PVP blend and the CF2 or CH2 group of PVDF. According to the Fourier transform infrared and wide-angle X-ray difffraction analyses, the introduction of PMMA does not change the crystalline state (i.e. a phase) of PVDF. By contrast, the addition of PVP in the blends favors the transformation of the crystalline state of PVDF from non-polar a to polar beta phase. Moreover, the crystallinity of the PVDF/PMMA/PVP ternary blends also decreases compared with neat PVDF. Through mechanical analysis, the elongation at break of the blends significantly increases to more than six times that of neat PVDF. This confirms that the addition of the PMMA/PVP blend enhances the toughness of PVDF. Besides, the hydrophilicity of PVDF is remarkably improved by blending with PMMA/PVP; in particular when the content of PVP reaches 30 wt%, the water contact angle displays its lowest value which decreased from 91.4 degrees to 51.0 degrees. Abstract:The morphology evolution under shear during different processing is indeed an important issue regarding the phase morphology control as well as final physical properties of immiscible polymer blends. High-speed thin wall injection molding (HSTWIM) has recently been demonstrated as an effective method to prepare alternating multilayered structure. To understand the formation mechanism better and explore possible phase morphology for different blends under HSTWIM, the relationship between the morphology evolution of polymer blends based on polypropylene (PP) under HSTWIM and some intrinsic properties of polymer blends, including viscosity ratio, interfacial tension, and melt elasticity, is systematically investigated in this study. Blends based on PP containing polyethylene (PE), ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH), and polylactic acid (PLA) are used as examples. Compatibilizer has also been added into respective blends to alter their interfacial interaction. It is demonstrated that dispersed phase can be deformed into a layered-like structure if interfacial tension, viscosity ratio, and melt elasticity are relatively small. While some of these values are relatively large, these dispersed droplets are not easily deformed under HSTWIM, forming ellipsoidal or fiber-like structure. The addition of a moderate amount of compatibilizer into these blends is shown to be able to reduce interfacial tension and the size of dispersed phase, thus, allowing more deformation on the dispersed phase. Such a study could provide some guidelines on phase morphology control of immiscible polymer blends under shear during various processing methods.
Morphology and Rheological Behaviors of Polycarbonate/High Density Polyethylene in Situ Microfibrillar Blends

Abstract:Polycarbonate (PC)/high density polyethylene (HDPE) in situ microfibrillar blends were fabricated by a slit die extrusion, hot stretching, and quenching process. Despite PC and HDPE having a high viscosity ratio, which is usually disadvantageous to fibrillation, the morphological observation indicated that the blends had well-defined PC microfibrils. The size and amount of the PC fibrils were nonuniform through the thickness of the extrudate, and were also affected by the PC concentration and hot stretch ratio. There were coarse and dense fibrils in the core zone, while these fibrils became finer and reduced in number toward the surface. The melt flow rate (MFR) of the PC/HDPE microfibrillar blend decreased with the increase of PC concentration, but increased with the larger hot stretching rate (or hot stretching ration, HSR). Besides, it was found that the fibrillar blend had better flowability than the common blend with spherical particles at the same PC concentration. Temperature was also an important factor influencing the MFR due to the temperature dependence of PC and HDPE viscosity, and the PC phase morphology. The PC microfibrils could not be preserved beyond 230 degreesC and transformed into spherical particles. The rheological behaviors at various shear rates were studied by capillary rheometer. The orientation of PC fibrils and HDPE molecules with higher shear rate led to a decrease in the viscosity of microfibrillar blend. The data obtained in this study can help construct the technical foundation for recycling and utilization of PC and HDPE waste by manufacture of microfibrillar blends in future work.

Abstract:Polyolefin (PO) blends are difficult to separate due to density and chemical structure similarities. The associated waste treatment in the context of mechanical recycling is therefore complicated by the establishment of multi-phase morphologies that are not yet fully understood. In the present work, a high density polyethylene (HDPE) with a very high melt flow index (MFI) and a polypropylene (PP) with a very low MFI are deliberately mingled to better understand the full spectrum of morphological variations for PO blending. The linkage with the control over injection mold-based mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elasticity modulus, elongation at break, and impact strength is made. This is done supported by the connecting of experimental analyses at different scales, including (i) the molecular scale via size exclusion chromatography and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and (ii) the meso-scale via scanning electron and polarized light microscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry, including a differentiation between the bulk and surface region. Emphasis is both on blends processed once and re-processed either once, twice or three times. For the single processing, it is demonstrated that in most cases a droplet morphology is obtained, with smaller droplets in case HDPE is the minor component and with a dominance of HDPE at the surface even for 60% PP, due to a better HDPE flowability. It is further shown that the scission of PP chains and crosslinking of HDPE chains respectively facilitates and inhibits crystallization, at least if meso-scale -mixing as more evident during re-processing is not taking over. It is also highlighted that the properties of PP can be enhanced by adding up to 10 wt% HDPE, acting as a filler, and that the (ideally) reprocessed blends remain suitable for application.

Abstract:Thermally stable and biodegradable blends of ultrahigh molecular weight poly(propylene carbonate) (UHMW-PPC), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) were melt compounded in a batch mixer followed by compression molding. The miscibility, mechanical properties, thermal behavior, and morphologies of the blends were investigated by torque rheometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, tensile strength test, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results showed well interfacial miscibility among phases of PVA, EVOH and PPC. The hydrogen bonding interaction between PPC with PVA and/or EVOH can also be confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra. The study on the mechanical properties and thermal behavior demonstrated that PVA/EVOH content can enhance the tensile strength, thermal stability and crystallinity of the blends dramatically. Further, scanning electron microscopic observation revealed a three-phase structure with good interfacial adhesion.
Effect of core-shell morphology evolution on the rheology, crystallization, and mechanical properties of PA6/EPDM-g-MA/HDPE ternary blend

Abstract:In this article, polyamide 6 (PA6), maleic anhydride grafted ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM-g-MA), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) were simultaneously added into an internal mixer to melt-mixing for different periods. The relationship between morphology and rheological behaviors, crystallization, mechanical properties of PA6/EPDM-g-MA/HDPE blends were studied. The phase morphology observation revealed that PA6/EPDM-g-MA/HDPE (70/15/15 wt %) blend is constituted from PA6 matrix in which is dispersed core-shell droplets of HDPE core encapsulated by EPDM-g-MA phase and indicated that the mixing time played a crucial role on the evolution of the core-shell morphology. Rheological measurement manifested that the complex viscosity and storage modulus of ternary blends were notable higher than the pure polymer blends and binary blends which ascribed different phase morphology. Moreover, the maximum notched impact strength of PA6/EPDM-g-MA/HDPE blend was 80.7 KJ/m2 and this value was 1011 times higher than that of pure PA6. Particularly, differential scanning calorimetry results indicated that the bulk crystallization temperature of HDPE (114.6 degrees C) was partly weakened and a new crystallization peak appeared at a lower temperature of around 102.2 degrees C as a result of co-crystal of HDPE and EPDM-g-MA. Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(ethylene-butylacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate) (PTW) are polymers with weak interfacial adhesion. Blends based on PVDF and PTW (50/50w/w) with poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) (0, 1, 3, 5, 7wt%) are obtained by compression molding. The estimation of interfacial interaction among PVDF, PTW, and PBS and the properties of PVDF/PTW blends are investigated. The optimal content of PBS to form a co-continuous morphology in PVDF/PTW blends is proposed, indicating that the beneficial effect of PBS (7wt%) on interfacial adhesion is observed. Overall, estimating interfacial adhesion is a critical issue for designing PVDF/PTW blend with excellent performance, which has a prospect in coating. [GRAPHICS] .
Morphology Prediction and the Effect of Core‐shell Structure on the Rheological Behavior of PP/EPDM/HDPE Ternary Blends

Abstract:In this work, the morphologies of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) rubber/high density polyethylene (HDPE) 70/20/10 blends were studied and compared with the predictions of the spreading coefficient and minimum free energy models. The interfacial tension of PP/HDPE, PP/EPDM, and HDPE/EPDM blends were obtained by fitting the experimental dynamic storage modulus data to Palierne's theory. The prediction results showed core-shell morphology (core of HDPE and shell of EPDM) in PP matrix. The PP/EPDM/HDPE blends were respectively prepared by direct extrusion and lateral injection method. Core-shell morphology (core of HDPE and shell of EPDM) could be obtained with direct extrusion corresponding to the predicted morphology. The morphology of PP/EPDM/HDPE blends could be effectively controlled by lateral injection method. For PP/EPDM/HDPE blend prepared by lateral injection method, HDPE and EPDM phase were dispersed independently in PP matrix. It was found that the different morphology of PP/EPDM/HDPE blends prepared by two methods showed different rheological behavior. When the core-shell morphology (core of HDPE and shell of EPDM) appeared, the EPDM shell could confine the deformation of HDPE core significantly, so the interfacial energy contribution of dispersed phase on the storage modulus of blends would be weaken in the low frequency region. Abstract:In the past few decades, Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/Polymethylmethacrylate (PVDF/PMMA) binary blend has attracted substantial attention in the scientific community due to possible intriguing mechanical, optical and ferroelectric properties that are closely related to its multiple crystal structures/phases. However, the effect of PMMA phase on the polymorphism of PVDF, especially the relationship between miscibility and polymorphism, remains an open question and is not yet fully understood. In this work, three series of particle blends with varied levels of miscibility between PVDF and PMMA were prepared via seeded emulsion polymerization: PVDF–PMMA core–shell particle (PVDF@PMMA) with high miscibility; PVDF/PMMA latex blend with modest miscibility; and PVDF@c–PMMA (crosslinked PMMA) core–shell particle with negligible miscibility. The difference in miscibility, and the corresponding morphology and polymorphism were systematically studied to correlate the PMMA/PVDF miscibility with PVDF polymorphism. It is of interest to observe that the formation of polar β/γ phase during melt crystallization could be governed in two ways: dipole–dipole interaction and fast crystallization. For PVDF@PMMA and PVDF/PMMA systems, in which fast crystallization was unlikely triggered, higher content of β/γ phase, and intense suppression of crystallization temperature and capacity were observed in PVDF@PMMA, because high miscibility favored a higher intensity of overall dipole–dipole interaction and a longer interaction time. For PVDF@c–PMMA system, after a complete coverage of PVDF seeds by PMMA shells, nearly pure β/γ phase was obtained owing to the fast homogeneous nucleation. This is the first report that high miscibility between PVDF and PMMA could favor the formation of β/γ phase.

Abstract:Morphology control of polymer alloys is an attractive topic for investigators due to its ability to improve the performance of products for years. However, it is hard to control the morphology of immiscible polymer blends during melt processing. Herein, we studied the morphology evolution of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) with the inclusion of ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate (EGMA). Scanning electron microscopy of both cryo-fractured and etched cryo-fractured samples indicates that the in situ reaction among PLA, PBS, and EGMA can induce the morphology change and result in a novel 3D star-like structure. Rheology behaviors of the samples under different angular frequencies were used to validate the formation of 3D networks in the samples. Tensile stiffness reinforcements at both room temperature and high temperature were provided through dynamic mechanical analysis. In addition, a 10-fold improvement in impact strength is also monitored by the unnotched impact test to indicate the superior toughening effect. Furthermore, the crystalline behavior and thermal properties of the blends were also studied. It is believed that our work not only gives a deeper understanding of the reaction-induced morphology evolution of the PLA/PBS/EGMA blends but also reveals an avenue toward morphology control by melt processing.
Microstructure Evolution and Mechanism of PLA/PVDF Hybrid Dielectrics Fabricated under Elongational Flow

Abstract:Polylactide (PLA)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hybrid dielectrics with high melt flow index ratio have been prepared by a novel twin-eccentric rotor extruder (TERE). In TERE, the continuous elongational flow, originated from the alternate compression and release, plays a key role during melt blending. Compared to traditional shear flow, it facilitates the dispersion and orientation of the dispersed phase along the elongational direction, forming the fine and anisotropic micromorphology in PLA/PVDF blends. With the change of composition ratio, twice phase transitions and three structure regions are observed, in which the interpenetrating network structure is formed at 60-70 wt% PVDF loading. Based on the coupling effect of elongational flow and material properties, the mechanism of microstructure evolution for PLA/PVDF blends is put forward. In addition, the effective dielectric constant of PLA/PVDF blends is slowly and then rapidly improved in linear with PVDF content increasing. The turning point is the first phase transition due to the formation of new continuous phase of PVDF.

Abstract:It is difficult for polymeric materials to avoid the conflict between the mechanical properties and flowability in manufacturing large-sized injection-molded products. To solve the issue, this paper develops an industrial volume-pulsatile injection molding (VPIM) machine to introduce a high-amplitude vibration force field into the entire injection molding process. As a one-step morphology control, the vibration force field can drive the dispersed Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) droplets to form the stiff microfibrils to improve the mechanical properties of the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with high melt flow index (MFI). HDPE matrix is toughened and reinforced simultaneously under the synergistic effect of VPIM and PET. The impact and yield strengths of the HDPE/PET composite sample prepared by VPIM are increased by 696% and 28.5%, respectively, compared with that of the pure HDPE sample prepared by conventional injection molding (CIM). The optimal process frequency is found to be 0.5Hz for the mechanical properties of HDPE/PET composite. The phase and impact-fractured surface morphologies indicate that the dramatic improvement of the mechanical properties should be attributed to the in-situ formation of PET submicron-fibrils and hybrid shish-kebabs in the intermediate region. The morphological analysis results are verified by DSC, DMA, 2D-WAXD, and 2D-SAXD tests. From a multi-physics perspective, the influencing mechanism of the vibration flow field on the morphology is put forward to reveal why the mechanical properties of HDPE/PET composite are the best at 0.5Hz.
