Abstract:In this work, a series of S-doped BiOBrxI1-x solid solutions are fabricated via a simple and rapid solvothermal process. Various characterization techniques are used to thoroughly investigate the as-fabricated solid solutions. Interestingly, compared to BiOBrxI1-x, S-doped BiOBrxI1-x solid solutions exhibit a loose flower-like structure comprised of thinner nanosheets, which contributes to the enhanced specific surface area, as assessed by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. Furthermore, S-doped BiOBrxI1-x solid solutions reveal boosted visible-light response and rapid separation of photoinduced charge carriers, as verified by optical, photo-electrochemical, and electrochemical analysis. These lead to superior visible-light photocatalytic properties of S-doped BiOBrxI1-x solid solutions on pollutant removal, N2 fixation, and microplastic degradation. The crystal structure, morphology, and photocatalytic stability of the prepared samples are demonstrated by comparing their X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscopy images, and photocatalytic degradation as well as nitrogen reduction performance before and after six catalytic recycles. Furthermore, based on Density Functional Theory simulations, significant modifications in the band gap of BiOBrxI1-x solid solutions occur as iodine content increases while sulfur doping further refines the electronic features, which aligns with the results of Tauc plots. This research proves that S doping is a viable strategy for modulating the electronic structures of BiOBrxI1-x solid solutions for improving its photocatalytic performance, and provides a new route for optimizing the bandgaps of semiconductors via the non-metallic doping strategy.
Synthesis and Characterization of Bi2S3 Quantum Dot-Sensitized TiO2 Nanorod Arrays Coated with ZnSe Passivation Layers

Abstract:Stable Bi2S3 quantum dots (QDs) prepared by a modified successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method were used to decorate TiO2 nanorod (TNR) arrays and enhance their photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. In the above procedure, elemental sulfur vapor was utilized as a precursor instead of aqueous Na2S to prevent the photodecomposition of QDs, whereas the hydrolysis of the Bi precursor (Bi(NO3)(3)) was prevented by using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a stabilizer, and interfacial charge recombination was inhibited by depositing ZnSe passivation layers. The prepared photoelectrodes were subjected to morphological, structural, compositional, and optical/PEC property analyses, and the ideal bandgap and high absorption coefficient of Bi2S3 QDs was shown to result in enhanced visible light absorption properties and PEC performance of QD-sensitized TNR thin films, as compared to those of bare TNR films. The deposition of ZnSe on sensitized films resulted in further PEC performance enhancement, achieving a photocurrent density of 0.11 mA/cm(2) and an electron lifetime of 37.9 ms, which was attributed to the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination by ZnSe passivation layers. Thus, the facile synthesis and environmentally friendly nature of Bi2S3 QD-sensitized TNR films coated with ZnSe passivation layers make them promising components of solar energy-driven devices.
Synthesis of Mesoporous CdS/titania Composites with Visible Light Photocatalytic Activities

Abstract:A mesoporous CdS/titania heterogeneous structure has been synthesized via the self-assembly of Cd2+ ions and titania nanosheets and the subsequent sulfuration. The composited structure that CdS nanoparticles were encapsulated into titania nanosheets exhibited an enhanced visible light harvesting, as well as a large surface area and two kinds of mesoporous structures derived from the restacking of nanosheets and the pillaring of CdS nanoparticles, respectively. The results of photodegrading rhodamine B under visible light illumination suggested that this CdS/titania composite possessed a high activity compared with its layered titanate precursors and the Cd2+ intercalated form. Moreover, this material was extremely stable and displayed an excellent reusability after 5cycles.
Insights into the Enhanced Adsorption/photocatalysis Mechanism of a Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 Nanosheet

Abstract:The composite Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 nanosheet was fabricated by facile precipitation method for the first time. The results of XRD, XPS and FT-IR confirmed the successful construction of heterojunctions. Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 displayed better adsorptive and photocatalytic activity for removal of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) with good stability. Zeta potential and BET analysis suggested that the enhancement of Lewis base sites and large surface area were the reason for the improvement of adsorptive mechanism. On the side of photocatalysis, the better charge separation and visible light utilization in Bi4O5Br2/g-C3N4 were confirmed by transient photocurrent response, PL spectrum and UV–vis DRS. Moreover, active species trapping experiments and ESR tests indicated that h+ and ·O2− were the main radicals in the photocatalytic system. As the formation of type II heterojunction, band structures were optimized by valence band (VB) and conduct band (CB) offset, which was depth calculated. Due to this optimization and more activity sites generated in the photocatalyst surface, a slight improvement of the ·O2− generation was displayed by quantification test. This work might provide some guidance for synergy of adsorption and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism, and rational construction of type II heterojunctions to solve ever-increasing environmental problems.
Visible-light-driven Photocatalytic and Photoelectrochemical Properties of Porous SnSx(x = 1,2) Architectures

Abstract:By using a facile and template-free polyol refluxing process, we reported the successful synthesis of porous SnS and SnS2 architectures on a large scale. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by using XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-vis DRS, Raman and N2 adsorption–desorption analyses. Studies revealed that the as-synthesized SnS and SnS2 products mainly consist of porous flower-like microstructures with reasonable BET surface areas of 66 m2 g−1 and 33 m2 g−1, respectively. Photocatalytic properties of trace amounts of samples were investigated by photodegradation of MB and RhB under visible light irradiation. The photoelectrochemical properties of both samples were also studied by configuring the samples as photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells, exhibiting excellent photosensitivity and response with greatly enhanced Ion/off as high as 1.4 × 103, three orders of magnitude higher than previous work. The results indicate the potential applications of the SnSx nanostructures in visible-light-driven photocatalysts, high response photodetectors and other optoelectronic nanodevices.
Visible-light photocatalytic activity of Sn2+-doped TiO2 and its loading effect on mesoporous montmorillonite

Abstract:Two different tin salts, SnCl2 center dot 2H(2)O and SnCl4 center dot 5H(2)O, were employed in the synthesis of Sn-doped TiO2. And the crystal structures and visible-light photocatalytic activities between Sn2+-doped TiO2 and Sn4+-doped TiO2 were compared. The results show that both the anatase-to-rutile phase transformation temperature and the crystal growth of TiO2 are remarkably decreased by Sn dopant, and the Sn2+ dopant shows the higher efficiency than Sn4+ dopant. And despite the similar spectra of XRD and FTIR, Sn2+-doped TiO2 displays higher visible-light photocatalytic activities than Sn4+-doped TiO2, due to the half-filled d electronic orbit of Sn2+. Mesoporous montmorillonite was chosen as the supporting material for Sn2+-doped TiO2, due to its high crystalization and large specific surface area. When Sn2+-doped TiO2 was loaded on mesoporous montmorillonite, the resualtant samples had no significant difference in XRD patterns and FTIR spectra as compared with the supporting material, and no obvious peaks were found related to Sn2+-doped TiO2. While the UV-Vis analysis shows that the adsorption edges of Sn2+-doped TiO2 display red shift after loaded onto mesoporous montmorillonite. As a result, the resultant compound photocatalyst exhibits higher visible-light catalytic activity than unloaded Sn2+-doped TiO2, which is due to the interactions between mesoporous montmorillonite supports and Sn2+-doped TiO2. This might provide a promising way to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 with minimized cost and widened light-response region.

Abstract:In this paper, g-C3N4/SnO2:Sb composite photocatalysts were fabricated by in situ loading Sb-doped SnO2 (SnO2:Sb) nanoparticles on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets via a facile hydrothermal method. The synthesized g-C3N4/SnO2:Sb composites delivered enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance for degradation of rhodamine B in comparison with g-C3N4/SnO2 composites without doping Sb. Various techniques including XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, XPS, PL and electrochemical method were employed to demonstrate the successful fabrication of g-C3N4/SnO2:Sb composite and to investigate the enhanced mechanism of photocatalytic activity. The improvement of visible light absorption and the promotion of separation efficiency and interfacial transfer of photogenerated carriers induced by Sb doping were responsible for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. This study provides a simple and convenient method to synthesize a visible light responsive catalyst with promising performance for the potential application in environmental protection.

Abstract:A series of Sn2+ doped MgIn2S4 photocatalysts were prepared via a facial hydrothermal method. The Sn dopants substitute the sites of Mg atom in MgIn2S4 unit cell, but not alter the crystal structure, demonstrated by the results of XRD and XPS. Compared to pristine MgIn2S4, Sn-doped MgIn2S4 samples exhibit significantly enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity. With increasing the Sn dopant content, the CO2 conversion rate first ascends, achieving the maximum rate at Sn-MgIn2S4-2 sample, and then decreases. After illumination for 4 h, the highest yield of CO and CH4 for Sn-MgIn2S4-2 sample reaches about 3.35 and 3.33 times higher than that of pristine MgIn2S4. The theoretical results based on density functional theory calculations reveal that Sn doping in MgIn2S4 tunes the band structure from the direct-transition of MgIn2S4 to indirect-transition, diminishes band gap and extends the light absorption range, reduces the effective masses of holes and promotes the migration of photoinduced carriers. The experimental results also demonstrate the positive role of Sn dopant in accelerating the separation and transportation of charges, and improving CO2 adsorption ability. This work systematically investigates and discusses the Sn2+ doping effect in MgIn2S4 on crystal structure, lattice variations, electronic band structures, CO2 adsorption ability, and photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity, which can provide a new hint for the fabrication of efficient photocatalyst by metal ion doping.

Abstract:Formation of solid solutions is a good strategy to acquire materials with special properties and bring forth new type of applications or enhance the performance of currently existing devices. In this study, hollow ZnxCd1-xS nanospheres with different molar ratios were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The products were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It was found that the photocatalysis performance of the as-prepared samples could be enhanced by formation of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. In addition, their photocatalytic activities are dependent on the Zn/Cd molar ratios and nanostructures of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. Hollow Zn0.2Cd0.8S spheres exhibit extremely high photocatalytic activity and good re-usability, and the photocatalytic conversion of RhB reaches as high as 96% after 50 min of irradiation.

Synthesis of Tin-Doped Three-Dimensional Flower-like Bismuth Tungstate with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of harmful organic matter is a feasible and environmentally friendly method. Bi2WO6 has become a hotspot of photocatalysts because of its unique layered structure and visible light response. In the present study, Sn doping was adopted to modified Bi2WO6 by hydrothermal method. The Sn-doped Bi2WO6 photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, XPS, PL, and DRS, respectively. The results show that Sn-doped Bi2WO6 shows three-dimensional (3D) flower-like morphology, which is composed of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. Sn4+ ions enter into the Bi2WO6 lattice, producing a degree of Bi2WO6 lattice distortion, which is in favor of reducing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Moreover, the specific surface area of Bi2WO6 is significantly increased after doping, which is beneficial to providing more active sites. The photocatalytic results show that 2%Sn-Bi2WO6 exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity. After 60 min of irradiation, the photocatalytic degradation degree of methylene blue (MB) increases from 80.6% for pure Bi2WO6 to 92.0% for 2%Sn-Bi2WO6. The first-order reaction rate constant of 2%Sn-Bi2WO6 is 0.030 min-1, which is 1.7 times than that of pure Bi2WO6.
Facile One-Step Hydrothermal Synthesis of Single-Crystalline SnNb2O6 Nanosheets with Greatly Extended Visible-Light Response for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:The conventional preparation of SnNb2O6 invariably involves complex and laborious steps, which unavoidably introduces defect into the host lattice and also increases the reaction period and costs, resulting in undesired recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. For the first time in this work, we manage to synthesize single-crystalline two-dimensional (2D) SnNb2O6 nanosheets with ultrathin structure through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. Comparative studies were explored to analyze the structure and phase evolution during the preparation course. The synthesized 2D structure demonstrated a narrower band gap of 2.09 eV and specific surface area of 76.1 m2 g-1, which exhibited significantly extended visible-light-responsive range and larger surface area by contrast with the state-of-the-art reports, resulting in excellent visible-light-driven photoactivity towards H2 production and water purification as well. Additionally, further enhanced photocatalytic performance was achieved by the incorporation of Pt as co-catalyst to indirectly indicate the advantage of the SnNb2O6 nanosheets in this method over other reported counterparts. It was found that, a very small amount of Pt loaded on the surface of SnNb2O6 nanosheets would contribute to remarkably higher activity than pure SnNb2O6 nanosheets and exhibit superior stability as well. Moreover, a deep insight into the underlying photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. This work sheds light on a new facile way to fabricate high-performance photocatalytic materials and provided new opportunities for solar-energy conversion.
Synthesis of 0D SnO2 nanoparticles/2D g-C3N4 nanosheets heterojunction: improved charge transfer and separation for visible-light photocatalytic performance

Abstract:A novel 0D SnO2 nanoparticles/2D g-C3N4 nanosheets heterojunction has been successfully constructed by electrostatic self-assembly. The 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets (CNNSs) are prepared by multiple thermal exfoliation at 500 °C, and 0D SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with the average diameter of about 30 nm are prepared by hydrothermal method. The experiment and calculation results have revealed that a built-in electric field (BIEF) has been established at the contact interface of SnO2/CNNSs type II heterojunction, and this BIEF can specify charge transfer direction and promote charge separation. Furthermore, the raised conduction band (CB) of CNNSs provides a greater driving force for the charge transfer from CNNSs to SnO2. SnO2/CNNSs heterojunction exhibits the highest degradation of 96.9% for Rhodamine B (RhB) within 50 min under simulated visible light, which is 32.3 and 1.5 times than that of SnO2 and CNNSs, respectively. The superoxide radical (•O2− )is confirmed as the most important active substance in photocatalytic activity and a possible photocatalytic mechanism of SnO2/CNNSs has been proposed for the improved photocatalytic performance.

Photophysical and Photocatalytic Properties of BiSnSbO6 under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:BiSnSbO6 with strong photocatalytic activity was first fabricated by a high-temperature, solid-state sintering method. The resulting BiSnSbO6 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that BiSnSbO6, with a pyrochlore structure and a cubic crystal system by a space group Fd3m, was well crystallized. The lattice parameter or the band gap of BiSnSbO6 was 10.234594 Å or 2.83 eV. Compared with N-doped TiO2, BiSnSbO6 showed higher photocatalytic activity in the degradation of benzotriazole and rhodamine B. The apparent first-order rate constant for BiSnSbO6 in the degradation of benzotriazole and rhodamine B was 0.0182 min−1 and 0.0147 min−1, respectively. On the basis of the scavenger experiment, during the photocatalytic process, the main active species were arranged in order of increasing photodegradation rate: •OH < •O2− < h+. The removal rate of benzotriazole or rhodamine B was approximately estimated to be 100% with BiSnSbO6 as a photocatalyst after 200 min visible-light irradiation. Plentiful CO2 produced by the experiment indicated that benzotriazole or rhodamine B was continuously mineralized during the photocatalytic process. Finally, the possible photodegradation pathways of benzotriazole and rhodamine B were deduced.

Abstract:The development of high-performance photocatalysts is crucial in addressing water environmental pollution using photocatalytic technology. In this study, CPVA/SnS 2 heterojunctions modified with conjugated polyvinyl alcohol were prepared using water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol. The effects of temperature and CPVA loading amount on the chemical composition, morphology, optical and electrochemical properties, and visible-light photocatalytic reduction of aqueous Cr(VI) performance of CPVA/SnS 2 were evaluated. The results showed that the CPVA was uniformly coated on the surface of SnS 2 , improving the light absorption range and the effective utilization of photogenerated carriers. All CPVA/SnS 2 heterojunctions exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to bare SnS 2 . The reaction rate for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by CPVA/SnS 2 -B (0.034 min −1 ) was 3.46 times higher than that of SnS 2 (0.0098 min −1 ). The photocatalytic mechanism of S-scheme heterojunction for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by CPVA/SnS 2 was proposed based on the trapping experiments and electrochemical results. This study provides a straightforward strategy for the construction of efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:The paper describes a methodology for fabricating hollow microspheres of tin dioxide by utilizing carbonaceous saccharide microspheres as templates. The fabricated SnO 2 microspheres exhibit uniform morphology and high crystallinity, which were verified with X-ray diffraction analyses and electron microscopy images. Through controlling different solvent and heating rate, we can accurately control the uniformity, dispersion and surface morphology of the hollow microspheres. Additionally, the study explored the utilization of the prepared SnO 2 hollow microspheres and SnO 2 nanoparticles in the degradation of Rhodamine B as detected by ultraviolet ray. Test data results indicated that the photocatalytic efficiency of SnO 2 hollow microspheres surpassed that of the nanoparticles, attributed to the former’s multi-level reflection of light, resulting in effective light utilization. The hollow SnO 2 microspheres can serve as an excellent candidate for a photocatalyst, and this controllable yet sample synthesis route is anticipated to be employed for production of numerous hollow metal oxide structures with superior photoelectric properties.

Abstract:The photocatalytic reduction of toxic soluble Cr (VI) heavy metal pollutant to lower toxicity Cr (III) is a green and promising approach for environmental remediation. In this study, a novel core-shell SnIn4S8@Bi2MoO6 heterojunction (SIS/BMO) photocatalyst was successfully fabricated via encapsulating Bi2MoO6 nanosheets on the surface of flower-like SnIn4S8 microsphere. The Cr (VI) reduction under visible light illumination was evaluated to demonstrate the photocatalytic performance of the samples. Results show that the optimized SIS/BMO-35 % sample exhibit the best Cr (VI) reduction ability with the apparent rate constant of k = 0.117 min−1, which is 5.85 and 3.44 times higher than that of SnIn4S8 and Bi2MoO6, respectively. Detailed analyses illustrate the principal reason for the improvement of SIS/BMO photocatalytic activity is the efficient charge transfer and separation, which was proved via the transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectra, photoluminescence spectrum and fluorescence lifetime. Moreover, the photo-stability of the SIS/BMO sample was significantly enhanced for the protection of Bi2MoO6 shell.

Abstract:Mesoporous SnO2 doped with a low concentration of ZnO (m-SnO2/ZnO), prepared through a hydrothermal method by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a structure-directing agent, has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption technologies. It was found that doped m-SnO2 showed different properties compared with undoped mesoporous SnO2 (m-SnO2). The former not only had a larger Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area but also showed a more stable mesoporous structure against high-temperature sintering than did the latter. Furthermore, m-SnO2/ZnO exhibited a significant enhancement of photocurrent and photocatalytic capability toward degrading rhodamine B (RhB) compared to undoped mesoporous SnO2. The improvement of photocatalytic activity for m-SnO2/ZnO might be attributed to its higher specific surface area and enhanced charge separation that derive from the coupling of ZnO with SnO2.
