Abstract:Cu2O@SnS2 heterojunction photocatalysts with one-dimensional hierarchical nanostructure were prepared by the solvothermal method. The Cu2O@SnS2 hierarchical nanostructure is composed of Cu2O nanowire core as well as in situ grown ultra-thin SnS2 nanosheets on Cu2O nanowires. The hierarchical Cu2O@SnS2 composite shows higher catalytic activity, and the degradation ratio of MB reaches nearly 100% at 80 min. The first-order reaction kinetic constant of Cu2O@SnS2 is 0.045 min− 1, which is much higher than that of Cu2O (0.003 min− 1) and SnS2 (0.014 min− 1). The improvement in photocatalytic performance is mainly due to the formation of typical heterojunction between Cu2O and SnS2. Photo-induced electrons in the CB of Cu2O react with oxygen to form superoxide radicals (·O2−) with strong oxidation ability. At the same time, the photo-induced holes in the VB of SnS2 also have strong oxidation ability, and the two can synergistically induce the degradation of pollutants. In addition, SnS2 nanosheets not only provide a large number of reaction sites for photocatalytic degradation, but also facilitate the migration of photo-induced carrier to the surface. The unique hierarchical Cu2O@SnS2 microstructure can also promote multiple light scattering within the material to enhance light absorption. Thus, the one-dimensional hierarchical Cu2O@SnS2 is a promising new visible light catalyst, which has potential application prospect in environmental protection and wastewater treatment.
Facile Construction of Nickel-Doped Hierarchical BiOCl Architectures for Enhanced Visible-Light-driven Photocatalytic Activities

Abstract:Doping modifications can endow BiOCl with dramatically improved photocatalytic performance via modifying the electronic structure. Here, the hierarchical Ni-doped BiOCl microflowers self-assembled by 2D nanosheets were synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method. Notably, the as-obtained Ni-doped BiOCl sample presented a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic degradation activity, totally decomposed Rhodamine B aqueous solution (15 mg/L) within 5 min under visible-light irradiation. Based on the experimental and calculated results, the introduction of Ni can narrow the band-gap and form defect energy levels simultaneously, resulted in a red shift in the absorption edge and much stronger absorption in the visible-light range. In addition, Ni-doped BiOCl exhibits an enhanced photocurrent density and a suppressed peak intensity of PL emission, indicating the efficient transportation and suppressed recombination of photoinduced charge carriers. This study sheds light on a possible application of Ni-doped BiOCl in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under visible-light irradiation and provides a feasible strategy to synthesis of high active Ni-doped BiOX (X = Cl, Br and I) photocatalysts.
Rod-like Bi4O7 Decorated Bi2O2CO3 Plates: Facile Synthesis, Promoted Charge Separation, and Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Contaminants

Abstract:In this manuscript, rod-like Bi4O7 decorated Bi2O2CO3 plates were fabricated for the first time. Compared with pristine Bi2O2CO3, the tight decoration of Bi4O7 over Bi2O2CO3 plates not only strengthened the visible light absorption, but also enhanced the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. As expected, the heterostructured Bi4O2/Bi2O2CO3 composites have exhibited highly promoted photocatalytic activities in decomposing Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light. The BOBC-2 sample displayed the best activity with a reaction rate constant of 0.0245 min(-1), which was 3.8 times higher than that of pure Bi4O7. Besides RhB, the Bi4O2/Bi2O2CO3 composites also displayed superior activity toward colorless contaminants with stable chemical structures, such as phenol, p-tert-butylphenol, and ophenylphenol. The activity enhancement should be ascribed to the proper energy levels of the materials and formation of heterojunction at their interfaces, which could facilitate the charge transfer and promote the separation efficiency. Following transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence emission tests all verified this. In addition, controlled experiments using various radical scavengers proved that center dot O-2(-) and h(+) played the chief role in decomposing organic pollutants. Abstract:The development of efficient heterojunctions through a simple and facile method is an effective way to enhance the photocatalytic performance of bismuth-based oxide semiconductors for industrial applications. Here, the novel flower-like type II SnS2/Bi2WO6 heterostructure consisting of bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) nanosheets and tin bisulfide (SnS2) nanoplates was successfully designed and synthesized. The crystal structure, composition, morphology, and photoelectric properties of the heterostructure were systematically characterized. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of SnS2/Bi2WO6 was analyzed and compared with Bi2WO6 or SnS2 alone or physical mixture of SnS2 and Bi2WO6. 2%SnS2/Bi2WO6 presents a 3.1 times greater degradation rate constant (0.0065 min–1) than that of Bi2WO6 (0.0021 min–1) under low visible light irradiation (5.3 mW·cm–2, a 44 W LED), while SnS2 alone exhibits no photocatalytic effect toward glyphosate. Furthermore, 2%SnS2/Bi2WO6 maintains 93% of its original photocatalytic activity even after four cycles. The possible photocatalytic degradation pathway of glyphosate and photocatalytic mechanism are also proposed. The excellent photocatalytic performance of SnS2/Bi2WO6 is attributed to the decoration of SnS2 nanoplates on the surface of Bi2WO6, appropriate (113)/(020) ratio, increased visible-light absorption, and effective separation of photoinduced carriers. This paper reports a new methodology that can act as a reference basis to design and develop visible-light responsive photocatalysts with outstanding photocatalytic performance for carbon dioxide reduction, water splitting, and pollutant degradation.

Abstract:Novel hierarchical flower-like SnO2 (HFL-SnO2) nanostructures are successfully synthesized through the hydrothermal method. We find that the hierarchical architectures of SnO2 is assembled by a number of regular-shaped nanosheets, which are cross-linked in the interior of the micro-flower. The product also has a high specific surface area of about 78.8 m(2) g(-1). Based on the nucleation and self-assembly process, a possible formation mechanism is proposed. The effects of SDS and NaCl on the product are also studied. Moreover, the product exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity and take possession of good stability and reusability under visible light. This study provides valuable experimental data for further study of nanomaterials and their photocatalytic properties. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Novel BiOCl micro-flower was synthesized by a facile method and used as a precursor to produce Bi2S3/BiOCl composites. The Bi2S3/BiOCl composites, synthesized by in situ etching of BiOCl precursor with thiacetamide (TAA) solution, maintain the hierarchical flower-like structure and exhibit a large surface area. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) were employed to study the structures, morphologies and optical properties of the as-prepared samples. Under visible light (lambda > 400 nm), the flower-like Bi2S3/BiOCl composite displayed much higher photocatalytic activity than single Bi2S3, BiOCl and 2D plate-like Bi2S3/BiOCl composite for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The increased photocatalytic activity of Bi2S3/BiOCl could be attributed to the formation of the heterostructure between Bi2S3 and BiOCl and large surface area of the hierarchical structure, which effectively separate the photoinduced electron-hole pairs and suppress their recombination. A Biotemplate Synthesized Hierarchical Sn-doped TiO2 with Superior Photocatalytic Capacity under Simulated Solar Light

Abstract:Despite a number of studies have been carried out on TiO2 based materials as photocatalysts for water pollutant treatment, it still needs sustained effort to extend the optical range of the photocatalysts and inhibit the recombination of photo-induced carriers to improve their catalytic activities under solar light. In this work, a series of Sn-doped TiO2 with different amounts of Sn doping (1, 5, 10 and 20 mol%) were biomimetically synthesized by a facile sol-gel method using cellulosic cotton as biotemplate. The Sn-doped TiO2 materials possess a typical three-dimensional hierarchical structure of microtubes consisting of interwoven nanofibers. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated via the degradation of methylene blue (MB) (10.0 mg L-1) under Xenon lamp simulated solar irradiation. The results show that Sn(5)-TiO2 (5 mol% Sn doping) sample exhibits an outstanding photocatalytic capacity with a superior degradation rate of higher than 98% within 30 min and a good reusability without significant decrease of activity after reused for four cycles. The most significantly improved photocatalytic capacity of TiO2 is ascribed to more extra surface hydroxyl groups and accessible active sites provided by the relatively high surface area, and a higher light capturing and utilization efficiency with less recombination of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs endowed by the good synergistic effect of the special hierarchically porous microstructure and the appropriate amount of Sn doping. Whereas, the excessive Sn doping reduces the photocatalytic activity obviously, resulting from the phase transformation of TiO2 generating more rutile phase with less reactivity, the phase separation with clear grain boundary blocking the active sites, and the extra Sn4+ acting as the recombination center. This research presents a facile biomimetic synthesis strategy combined with the traditional sol-gel method to develop various ion doped metal oxides as photocatalysts with enhanced activity.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient photocatalysts for contaminant degradation is of great significance in the fields of environment. Herein, a novel 0D/3D hierarchical heterojunction Zn2SnO4/SnS2 was designed via anchoring Zn2SnO4 nanoparticles on the SnS2 flower-like ball constructed from the assembly of SnS2 nanoflakes. The synthesized Zn2SnO4/SnS2 was characterized in detail by diverse methods. The photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) over Zn2SnO4/SnS2 were carried out. Compared to the pure SnS2, the prepared Zn2SnO4/SnS2 exhibits a significant increase in TC degradation efficiency. The degradation rate constants (0.01764 min−1) of tetracycline over the Zn2SnO4/SnS2 are 12 times those over the pure SnS2. The boosted photodegradation of TC is mainly due to the exceptional visible light response of Zn2SnO4/SnS2 as well as the obviously accelerated migration and separation of the photoinduced carries in SnS2 resulting from the exceptional electrical conductivity of Zn2SnO4 and the construction of the heterostructure between Zn2SnO4 and SnS2. The current work provide a novel measure for the rational design of highly efficient photocatalyst for pollutant degradation.

Synthesis of Tin-Doped Three-Dimensional Flower-like Bismuth Tungstate with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of harmful organic matter is a feasible and environmentally friendly method. Bi2WO6 has become a hotspot of photocatalysts because of its unique layered structure and visible light response. In the present study, Sn doping was adopted to modified Bi2WO6 by hydrothermal method. The Sn-doped Bi2WO6 photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, XPS, PL, and DRS, respectively. The results show that Sn-doped Bi2WO6 shows three-dimensional (3D) flower-like morphology, which is composed of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. Sn4+ ions enter into the Bi2WO6 lattice, producing a degree of Bi2WO6 lattice distortion, which is in favor of reducing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Moreover, the specific surface area of Bi2WO6 is significantly increased after doping, which is beneficial to providing more active sites. The photocatalytic results show that 2%Sn-Bi2WO6 exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity. After 60 min of irradiation, the photocatalytic degradation degree of methylene blue (MB) increases from 80.6% for pure Bi2WO6 to 92.0% for 2%Sn-Bi2WO6. The first-order reaction rate constant of 2%Sn-Bi2WO6 is 0.030 min-1, which is 1.7 times than that of pure Bi2WO6.
Architecting Z-scheme Bi2S3@CoO with 3D Chrysanthemums-Like Architecture for Both Photoeletro-Oxidization and -Reduction Performance under Visible Light

Abstract:A large-area Z-scheme Bi2S3@CoO three dimensional(3D) hierarchical chrysanthemums-like array with a appropriate redoxpotential is synthesized via solvothermal self-assembly process. Many secondary Bi2S3 nanosheets are epitaxially grown on thready micropetals of flower-like CoO. By virtue of this special architecture, the composite used as photoanode shows highly improved photoeletro-oxidization activities towards single and binary mixed tetracycline (TC) and chlortetracycline (CTC), while as a photocathode the photoeletro-reduction activities of n-nitrophenyl (n-NP) and Cr(VI) are also increased. The enhanced photoelectrocatalytic activity of Bi2S3@CoO is ascribed to the hierarchical chrysanthemums-like structure and the synergistic effect between Bi2S3 and CoO. The unique structure endows Bi2S3@CoO with high specific surface area, multiple light reflection/scattering channels and improved molecular diffusion kinetics, providing more exposed active edges and greater light utilization efficiency. The introduction of Bi2S3 further optimizes the band structure of CoO with a narrower band gap, resulting in high removal capacity to pollutants as well as higher separation efficiency of photogenerated charges and holes. The present study provides a new photoelectrocatalytic material, which will have potential application in the fields of high-efficiency light-energy conversion.
Facile One-Step Hydrothermal Synthesis of Single-Crystalline SnNb2O6 Nanosheets with Greatly Extended Visible-Light Response for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:The conventional preparation of SnNb2O6 invariably involves complex and laborious steps, which unavoidably introduces defect into the host lattice and also increases the reaction period and costs, resulting in undesired recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. For the first time in this work, we manage to synthesize single-crystalline two-dimensional (2D) SnNb2O6 nanosheets with ultrathin structure through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. Comparative studies were explored to analyze the structure and phase evolution during the preparation course. The synthesized 2D structure demonstrated a narrower band gap of 2.09 eV and specific surface area of 76.1 m2 g-1, which exhibited significantly extended visible-light-responsive range and larger surface area by contrast with the state-of-the-art reports, resulting in excellent visible-light-driven photoactivity towards H2 production and water purification as well. Additionally, further enhanced photocatalytic performance was achieved by the incorporation of Pt as co-catalyst to indirectly indicate the advantage of the SnNb2O6 nanosheets in this method over other reported counterparts. It was found that, a very small amount of Pt loaded on the surface of SnNb2O6 nanosheets would contribute to remarkably higher activity than pure SnNb2O6 nanosheets and exhibit superior stability as well. Moreover, a deep insight into the underlying photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. This work sheds light on a new facile way to fabricate high-performance photocatalytic materials and provided new opportunities for solar-energy conversion.

Abstract:The novel hierarchical flower-like SnO₂ (HFL-SnO₂) nanostructures with the diameter of about 500 nm, which are composed of regular-shaped nanosheets, are synthesized with a solvothermal method in the presence of 1 ml of Triethylamine (TEA) and the 0.2 mmol of Hexamethylene tetraamine (HMT) at 160 °C for 6 h. The SnO₂ has a high specific surface area of about 38.5 m²g-1. Based on the nucleation and self-assembly process, possible formation process of the new hierarchical flower-like nanostructures can be presented. The effects of TEA and HMT on the product are also studied. In addition, the product exhibits excellent photocatalttic activity to Methyl orange (MO) aqueous solution and possess good stability and reusability under visible light. This study will provide valuable experimental data for further study of nanomaterials and their photocatalytic properties.

Abstract:Novel flowerlike SnS2 and In3+-doped SnS2 hierarchical structures have been successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal route using biomolecular L-Cysteine-assisted methods. The L-cysteine plays an important role both as assistant and as sulfur source. Experiments with various parameters indicate that the pH values have a strong effect on the morphology of the assembly. Based on the experiments, a growth mechanical process was proposed. The synthetic samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM (HRTEM), BET measurement, TGA, and XPS in detail. Further investigation of the photocatalytic degradation of three different dyes, methylene blue, methylene green, and ethyl violet, indicate that both samples have high photocatalytic activity, and the doped In3+ has enhanced the photoactivity of SnS2.

Abstract:This work presents a one-pot template-free synthesis, detailed characterization, growth mechanism and application of well-defined uniform monodisperse (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical hollow microspheres self-assembled with single-crystalline nanosheets. The synthesis was conducted by hydrothermal treatment of bismuth citrate and sodium carbonate in water. Time-dependent evolutions of phase structure, composition, and morphology were investigated systematically and revealed that the growth mechanism of such novel structures involved a unique multistep pathway. First, near amorphous particles were produced through reaction, nucleation, crystallization, and aggregation processes. Then, stacked embryos of intermediate (BiO)(4)CO3(OH)(2) microspheres with attached particles were produced due to dissolution and recrystallization. Subsequently, stacked uniform solid microspheres with small particles attached on edges were generated by the consumption of particles through Ostwald ripening. The stacked microspheres further grew to form monodisperse hierarchical microspheres with a hole in the center, like flower buds. Finally, uniform monodisperse (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical hollow microspheres were produced through layers splitting. The aggregation of the self-assembled nanosheets contributed to the formation of 3D hierarchical architecture containing mesopores, which is favorable for efficient reactants transport and photo-energy harvesting. Furthermore, the band gap structure of (BiO)(2)CO3 was revealed by the experimental method combined with density functional theoretical calculation. As expected, the novel (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical hollow microspheres exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity due to the special hierarchical morphology, exceeding that of (BiO)(2)CO3 particles and commercial P25. The as-prepared uniform (BiO)(2)CO3 microspheres with well-defined hierarchical hollow structures are also ideal candidates for investigating their architecture-dependent performances in other areas, such as solar energy conversion, catalysis, electronics and so on.
Hydrothermal Synthesis of Hierarchical Flower-Like Zn-doped SnO2 Architectures with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:The hierarchical flower-like alpha-CNTs/SnO2 architectures composed of curved sheets are synthesized with hydrothermal method at 160 degrees C for 8 h. The alpha-CNTs/SnO2 composite was doped with alpha-CNTs during preparation, the photocatalytic activity of alpha-CNTs/SnO2 was evaluated by photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated visible light. The results showed that the photocatalytic activity of alpha-CNTs/SnO2 for degradation of RhB was up to 90.35% within 120 min, which was much higher than that of pure compound. It was significantly found that the introduction of alpha-CNTs, which may suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs on the interface of SnO2, leading to enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:The yolk–shell Bi@void@SnO2 photocatalyst was synthesized via a step-by-step process. The composition, morphology, optical and photoelectrochemical properties as well as the surface chemical composition and states of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra, electrochemical impedance spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, respectively. The tetracycline has been used to evaluate the photocatalytic activities of the as-synthesized samples. Compared with the degradation efficiency of 16.33% for pure Bi and almost nothing for SnO2 under visible light irradiation, the as-developed Bi@void@SnO2 photocatalyst possesses 81.81% of degradation efficiency. Meanwhile, the light absorption of the as-developed yolk–shell composites is broadened from ultraviolet to visible light comparing to pure SnO2 due to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi spheres. Moreover, the superoxide radicals, especially in holes, play leading roles during the photocatalytic degradation process. In addition, the decomposition mechanism of the as-fabricated composites for tetracycline is analyzed in detail.

Abstract:The microstructure of the photo-anode has prominent effect on the photoelectric performance of solar cells. A facile one-step hydrothermal method was used to synthesize TiO2 photo-anode with double-layer hierarchical structure. The saturated NaCl solution was added in precursor solution which promoted the formation of hierarchical TiO2. By controlling the reaction time, TiO2 hierarchical rod-flower structures with different morphologies were obtained. Bi2S3 nanomaterials were grown on TiO2 to form Bi2S3/TiO2 heterojunction. The optical and electric performance of Bi2S3/TiO2 has been greatly improved compared with the pure TiO2. The morphology and structure of the samples were carried out by FESEM, TEM, XRD and XPS. The optical and electrical properties were tested by optical absorption spectroscopy and electrochemical workstation. The results show that Bi2S3 widens the optical response range of the heterojunction and improves the carrier's separation efficiency. The bottom TiO2 nanorod provides a channel for the rapid transmission of electrons, and the upper flower-like TiO2 provides multitudinous adsorption sites for the deposition of Bi2S3. Meanwhile, it can also play a role in scattering the incident light and increase the absorption of light. This research work provides ideas for the subsequent preparation of photo-anode materials with high absorption and light scattering capabilities, and provides possibilities for its application in many aspects.

Abstract:In order to effectively address the global environmental issue and energy crisis, developing a satisfying photocatalyst with high solar response and efficient carrier separation efficiency is promising and still challenging. In this study, a feasible and effective strategy from the perspective of multi-scale regulation that integrating element doping and heterostructure construction as well as morphology control is used to improve the degradation efficiency in antibiotic removal. A Sn 4+ doped BiOCl (BOC–Sn) integrated Sn-doped WO 3 (WO 3 –Sn) photocatalyst with propelling photocatalytic degradation for tetracycline (TC) was fabricated via one-pot thiourea-assisted hydrothermal method and as-obtained catalysts were denoted as (BOC–WO)–Sn-Tu x ( x is the molar amount of thiourea in the synthesis). By regulating the content of thiourea, the optimized (BOC–WO)–Sn-Tu1 photocatalyst exhibits ultrafine grain size, expanded visible-light response and fast carrier transport. Driven by visible light, the TC dissociation rate mediated by (BOC–WO)–Sn-Tu1 surpassed that of BOC-WOwith a photodegradation rate constant k -value 5.75 times higher than that of WO 3 –Sn. Analysis of energy band configuration in the BOC-Sn and WO 3 –Sn photocatalyst suggests that these modifications can effectively promote the photocarriertransport with type-II at the heterojunction interfaces and passivate trap sites that reside within the (BOC–WO)–Sn-Tu1 catalysts. Benefited from the stronger reduction potential, •O 2 − with high yield acts as the crucial active species in the photocatalytic reaction system verified by the trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra detection. This work opens a new route in designing an effective photocatalytic system by integrating element doping and heterostructure construction as well as morphology regulation for environmental remediation.
