Abstract:An effective dispersant is essential for creating a high-quality water-based ceramic suspension. When the solid content of the slurry is high, a single dispersant proves inadequate. This study proposes a strategy for producing nano-YSZ (yttria-stabilized zirconia) ceramic slurries with high solid content and low viscosity using compound dispersants ammonium polyacrylate (PAANH 4 ) and fructose. The efficacy of dispersion is evaluated through rheological experiments and zeta potential analysis. The optimal dispersant effect is achieved when the compound dispersants are added in the following proportions: PAANH 4 = 0.5 wt% and fructose = 5 wt%. Consequently, the viscosity of the nano-YSZ slurry, with a solid content of 50 vol%, is reduced to 696 mPa·s at a shear rate of 100 s −1 . Both PAANH 4 and fructose effectively lower the slurry's viscosity via two separate mechanisms: electrostatic-steric stabilization and increasement of free water content. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was utilized to examine the nanoparticle dispersion process. The results show that after adding dispersants, the distance between two equilibrium particles is 4 nm, and the potential mean force curve displays a clear energy barrier. This provides a new method for investigating the dispersion effects of dispersants.

Abstract:<p>The development of science and technology brings forward higher and higher requirements for the properties of materials. Nanocellulose, with many fascinating properties including large specific surface area, template structure, good modifiability, biodegradability, and etc., has wide application prospects. The surface properties and interfacial compatibility of nanocellulose are the keys to its application performance. This review mainly summarizes the colloid and surface chemistry of nanocellulose and their effects on the dispersity in various solvents and polymer matrices, and especially focuses on the impact of surface hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, charge repulsion and steric hindrance on the dispersion properties. Various surface modification methods to improve the dispersion performance of nanocellulose, such as oxidation, etherification, esterification, amidation, graft polymerization, and etc., are summarized. In addition, the application of nanocellulose as the dispersant for Pickering emulsion, carbon nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles and etc. is also introduced. The development trend and potential application of nanocellulose are finally prospected.</p>

Abstract:In this study, a series of carboxylate-type copolymer dispersants were prepared. The effects of chemical structures of the copolymer dispersants, including the molecular weight, kind, quantity and ratio of hydrophilic/hydrophobic groups, and side chain length, on the solid loading, apparent viscosity, zeta potential, rheological behavior, and stability of coal-water slurry (CWS) prepared from Dongtan, Yima, and Datong coals were systematically investigated. The dispersion performance of the copolymer can be improved by adjusting its chemical structures, and the dispersion mechanism was discussed. In addition, a high solid loading CWS with excellent stability toward settling can be achieved by means of the copolymer dispersant and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC-Na). A recyclable dispersant based on carbomer utilizing controllable viscosity for high-efficiency dispersion of carbon fibers

Abstract:Good dispersion of carbon fibers is important for the carbon paper production, which is usually achieved using low carbon fiber concentrations and disposable dispersants. In this study, we developed carbomer as a recyclable and high-efficiency dispersant for carbon fibers. When the carbon fiber concentration was 0.1 wt%, carbon fiber suspension showed improved dispersion performance as increasing the carbomer dosage. It exhibited low Turbiscan Stability Index (TSI) of 0.41 and small change of delta backscattering between -0.5 to 0.8 % when using 0.5 wt% carbomer. However, the good dispersibility fade away when increasing the concentration of carbon fibers. Subsequently, the pH of the carbon fiber suspension was adjusted to 7.0 to improve the dispersibility by increasing the viscosity, but causing a worse flowability. Then the pH was further adjusted to 13.0 to ensure good flowability in the wet-forming process and good dispersibility at carbon fiber concentration of 0.5 wt%. More importantly, the dispersant was successfully recycled and still exhibited excellent dispersion effects for carbon fibers after 5 cycles. Notably, the high-efficiency dispersion of carbon fibers and the recyclability of dispersant were achieved simultaneously for the first time, which is suitable for the eco-friendly and sustainable production of carbon paper.

Abstract:Dispersion in clay may create problems for civil projects. Dispersive soils are clayey, high in sodium content, and washed easily when subjected to water with low salt concentrations. The current study investigated the use of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and recycled glass powder (RGP) for dispersive soil stabilization. Different proportions of CNF (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% by weight of soil) and RGP (0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% by weight of soil) were added to dispersive soil. The results of the double hydrometer test indicated that combining CNF and RGP significantly decreased the dispersion potential. The greatest decrease in dispersion potential was achieved with the addition of 1.5% CNF plus 6% and 8% RGP, which the soil was classified as non-dispersive. Atterberg limits testing indicated a decrease in the plasticity index. The greatest decrease in PI (41.5%) was achieved with the addition of 1.5% CNF plus 8% RGP to the soil. The results of the density tests on the samples by combining CNF and RGP revealed that the maximum dry density of the soil increases. SEM images showed that calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel was formed in samples containing 1.5% CNF and different percentages of RGP. This eventually caused an increase in the unconfined compressive strength. The greatest increase in strength was observed with the combination of 1.5% CNF and 8% RGP. The strength of these samples increased by 5.9, 10.4, and 12.5 times after 7, 14, and 28 days of curing, respectively, compared to the unmodified sample.

Abstract:Nanocellulose, a nanoscale derivative from renewable biomass sources, possesses remarkable colloidal properties in water, mechanical strength, and biocompatibility. It emerges as a promising bio-based dispersing agent for various nanomaterials in water. This mini-review explores the interaction between cellulose nanomaterials (nanocrystals or nanofibers) and water, elucidating how this may enable their potential as an eco-friendly dispersing agent. We explore the potential of nanocellulose derived from top-down processes, nanocrystals, and nanofibers for dispersing carbon nanomaterials, semiconducting oxide nanoparticles, and other nanomaterials in water. We also highlight its advantages over traditional methods by not only effectively dispersing those nanomaterials but also potentially eliminating the need for further chemical treatments or supporting stabilizers. This not only preserves the exceptional properties of nanomaterials in aqueous dispersion, but may even lead to the emergence of novel hybrid functionalities. Overall, this mini-review underscores the remarkable versatility of nanocellulose as a green dispersing agent for a variety of nanomaterials, inspiring further research to expand its potential to other nanomaterials and applications.

Abstract:Cellulose Nanofibrils (CNFs) were exposed to a certain amount of sodium chloride (NaCl) before being subjected to two types of drying methods (freeze drying and vacuum drying). The effect of two drying methods on water redispersibility of CNFs was investigated by characterizing product morphology, particle size distribution, water stability, and surface chemistry. The results showed that vacuum drying was favorable for the redispersion of CNFs with NaCl resulted in more homogenous fibril structure with lower mean particle sizes and higher water stability. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) experiments indicated that vacuum drying at pH 8 was more conducive to complexation between Na+ and carboxyl, hydroxyl groups favorable for CNF redispersion. Furthermore, NaCl is cheap, and the process is very straightforward which does not require any organic solvents or hazardous chemicals. Therefore, vacuum drying with NaCl may be considered as a green and economically feasible method for preparation of water redispersible dried CNFs.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) has been applied in various fields due to its nano-structure, high aspect ratio, specific surface area and modulus, and abundance of hydroxy groups. In this work, CNC suspensions with different concentrations (0.4, 0.6, and 0.8%) were used as the adjuvant to improve the dispersion ability of multilayer graphene (MLG) in aqueous suspension, which is easy to be aggregated by van der Waals force between layers. In addition, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, ethanol, and ultrapure water were used as control groups. Zeta potential analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the stability of MLG/CNC has met the requirement, and the combination of CNC and MLG was stable in aqueous suspension. Results from transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and absorbance showed that MLG had a better dispersion performance in CNC suspensions, compared to the other solutions. Raman spectrum analysis showed that the mixtures of 1.0 wt% MLG with 0.4% CNC had the least defects and fewer layers of MLG. In addition, it is found that CNC suspension with 0.8% concentration showed the highest ability to disperse 1.0 wt% MLG with the most stable performance in suspension. Overall, this work proved the potential application of CNC as adjuvant in the field of graphene nanomaterials.

Abstract:Conductive cellulose composites have received much attention as emerging materials due to their unique properties, such as biodegradability and flexibility. However, the achievable levels of conductivity of these cellulose composites are generally low due to the intrinsically nonconductive properties of cellulose. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were applied for preparation of a carbon fibers/expanded graphite (CF/EG) dispersion which was coated on cellulose paper to prepare highly conductive cellulose composites. Such composite materials were characterized based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) observation, FT-IR, XPS, and XRD and by determining the zeta potential, particle size, contact angle, and rheological behavior. It was found that the addition of CNC resulted in a significant improvement in the stability of the CF/EG dispersion. These results were explained by the following facts: (1) CNC improved the surface charge of the CF and EG due to the presence of negatively charged groups on the CNC surface, and (2) CNC increased the wettability of the CF and EG due to large availability of hydroxyl groups from CNC. The as-prepared CF/EG/CNC dispersion was then applied by coating cellulose paper surfaces, and the obtained papers presented superior conductivity and high flexibility.

Abstract:Dispersion is crucial for many applications of nanostructured materials. In this work, a facile and efficient method for dispersion of cellulose nanocrystals@polyaniline (CNCs@PANI) nanocomposites in an aqueous solution is reported by using cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as a dispersant. CNCs@PANI was prepared for the experiment by using CNCs as a template and controlling the reactions to obtain fiber-like nanocomposites. Then, the nanocomposite was dispersed in water with the CNFs by means of mechanical shearing. The centrifugal and storage stabilities of the nanocomposite were measured, as well as the zeta potential. The results showed that the CNFs had special dispersion assisting effects for dedoped CNCs@PANI. The CNCs@PANI dispersion showed good centrifugal and storage stability, and a zeta potential of −30.7 mV was recorded with the addition of 10 wt% CNFs. This CNCs@PANI dispersion was cast to obtain a conductive film, which had tensile strength and electrical conductivity of 26.7 MPa and 104.7 S m−1, respectively.

Abstract:Phthalocyanine green is a hydrophobic pigment with excellent properties, which is usually dispersed in the organic phase. However, most organic phases are volatile and harmful to the environment and organisms. Therefore, phthalocyanine green dispersed in the aqueous phase has development potential. In this work, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as dispersant and stabilizer to disperse phthalocyanine green in the aqueous phase. Phthalocyanine green was added to CNCs colloid to prepare phthalocyanine green suspensions with good dispersibility and stability. The particle size, zeta potential, absorbance and microstructure of the phthalocyanine green suspensions were tested and analyzed. The results showed that CNCs had good dispersibility and stability to phthalocyanine green due to charge repulsion and steric hindrance. The phthalocyanine green suspensions were nano-sized and had well compatibility with different types of coating forming substances. The coatings of the mixture had good water resistance, adhesion and mechanical properties. The suspensions had the application property and could be mixed with coating forming substances to prepare coating materials. As a renewable and easily degraded biomass resource, CNCs are expected to become a new dispersant and stabilizer for pigment.

Abstract:Treatment procedures of the CMC funtionalization on the three carbonbased nanoparticles and their dispersion charateristics. Carbon‐based nanoparticles are widely regarded as promising nanofillers in nanocomposites to pursue advanced properties. To date, there has been a lack of systematic investigation into the structural variations of nanofillers and their influences on dispersion characteristics, as well as the resulting mechanical properties of nanocomposites. In this study, nanodiamond (ND), carbon nanotube (CNT), and graphene (GNP) were selected as the representative zero‐, one‐, and two‐dimensional nanofillers, respectively. A novel functionalization technique utilizing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was employed to disperse nanofillers. The various characterization techniques and experimental results revealed that CMC functionalization was effective in reducing the agglomeration and improving the distribution uniformity of all three nanofillers. Among the three nanofillers, zero‐dimensional ND exhibited the most homogeneous dispersion quality in epoxy nanocomposites. The strongest abrasion resistance was found in ND‐reinforced epoxy nanocomposites, while CNT‐reinforced epoxy nanocomposites exhibited the best tensile properties. Highlights Nanodiamond with a spherical structure had better dispersion characteristics. Cylindrical carbon nanotube and planar graphene tended to agglomerate. Nanodiamond reinforced nanocomposites had better abrasion resistance. Carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites had better tensile properties. Carboxymethyl cellulose functionalization was valid for all three nanofillers.

Synthesis of a novel amphoteric copolymer and its application as a dispersant for coal water slurry preparation

Abstract:In this work, a novel amphoteric copolymer named Poly(sodium p-styrenesulfonate– co -acrylic acid- co -diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC)) was synthesized via free radical polymerization. Afterwards, P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) was explored for use as a dispersant in coal water slurry (CWS) preparation. The structure of P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The synthetic conditions were optimized as the feed ratio of AA to SS was 1 : 1 (for Yulin coal) or 1.5 : 1 (for Yili coal), and DMDAAC dosage was 4.0 wt% (for Yulin coal) and 6.0 wt% (for Yili coal) toward total monomers. The performances of P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) as a dispersant for CWS were evaluated by various technologies, such as apparent viscosity, zeta potential, static stability and contact angle measurements. The results revealed that the optimized dosage of P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) in CWS preparation was 0.3 and 0.4 wt% for Yulin coal and Yili coal respectively. In this optimum condition, CWS prepared using P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) as dispersant showed a typical shear thinning behaviour and excellent stability, which are desired in industries. The rheological models also confirmed the pseudo-plastic characteristics of CWS. Finally, compared with the widely used anionic dispersant naphthalene sulphonate formaldehyde condensate (NSF) and poly(sodium p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), P(SS- co -AA- co -DMDAAC) developed in this work exhibited better slurry making performance. The introduction of cationic functional groups promoted the adsorption of the dispersant, which further enhanced the electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance among coal particles. Accordingly, the viscosity of CWS decreased and static stability enhanced.

Abstract:Dispersion of graphite in water was achieved using clay as dispersing aid. In the absence of polymer, the clay/graphite suspensions were sufficiently stable to produce aerogels composed of very thin layers of uniformly dispersed nanoparticles. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) aerogels containing binary nanofillers (clay plus graphite) were then fabricated and tested. These composites were found to maintain low thermal and electrical conductivities even with high loading of graphite. A unique compressive stress-strain behavior was observed for the aerogel, exhibiting a plateau in the densification region, likely due to sliding between clay and graphite layers within the PVOH matrix. The aerogels containing only graphite exhibited higher compressive modulus, yield stress and toughness values than the samples filled with binary nanofillers. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra for the same composite aerogel before and after compression testing illustrated the compression-induced dispersion changes of nanofillers. Composites containing 50 wt % graphite demonstrated a downshift of its 2D Raman peak implying graphite exfoliation to graphene with less than 5 layers.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are difficult to redisperse in water after they have been completely dried due to the irreversible agglomeration of cellulose during drying. Here, we have developed a simple process to prepare water-redispersible dried CNFs by the adsorption of small amounts of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and oven drying. The adsorption of CMC onto CNFs in water suspensions at 22 and 121 °C was studied, and the adsorbed amount of CMC was measured via conductimetric titration. The water-redispersibility of dried CNFs adsorbed with different amounts of CMC was characterized by sedimentation test. Above a critical threshold of CMC adsorption, i.e. 2.3 wt%, the oven dried CNF–CMC sample was fully redispersible in water. The morphology, rheological, and mechanical properties of water-redispersed CNF–CMC samples were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, viscosity measurement, and tensile test, respectively. The water-redispersed CNFs preserved the original properties of never dried CNFs. This new method will facilitate the production, transportation and storage, and large-scale industrial applications of CNFs.

Abstract:Coal water slurry (CWS) was prepared from lignite washery tailings. Its moisture content can be subdivided into two forms: free water (surface adsorption water) and bound water, i.e., interparticle, capillary, adhesion and internal adsorption water. The effect on moisture distribution of three distinct dispersants was studied through thermal drying and TG–DSC analysis. A new test method combining thermal drying and bond strength analysis was put forward for a thorough moisture distribution. The new method showed reasonable results and arrives at the same conclusion as the TG–DSC method. The addition of dispersants increased the free water content and decreased the bound water content, in particular those of interparticle and capillary water. Also there was a slight decrease in total moisture, compared to CWS prepared without dispersant. The moisture distribution showed its biggest change with dispersant CLS (calcium lignosulfonate), followed by dispersant NDF (a co-polymer of methylene naphthalene sulfonate, styrene sulfonate and maleate), and ended up with NNO (sodium methylene bis-naphthalene sulfonate).
Carboxyalkylated Lignin as a Sustainable Dispersant for Coal Water Slurry

Abstract:Coal water slurry (CWS) has been considered a cleaner and sustainable alternative to coal. However, the challenging suspension of coal particles in CWS has created a major obstacle to its use in industry. This study presents a novel approach to enhance the stability and rheological properties of coal water slurry (CWS) through the utilization of carboxyalkylated lignin (CL) as a dispersant. The generated CL samples had high water solubility of around 9 g/L and a charge density of around 2 mmol/g. All CLs were able to stabilize the coal suspension, and their performance decreased due to the increase in the alkyl chain length of carboxyalkylated lignin. Carboxymethylated lignin (CL-1) improved the stability of the coal suspensions with the lowest instability index of less than 0.6. The addition of CLs reduced the contact angle of the coal surface from 45.3° to 34.6°, and the increase in the alkyl chain length hampered its effect on contact angle changes. The zeta potential measurements confirmed that the adsorption of CL enhanced the electrostatic repulsion between coal particles in suspensions, and the zeta potential decreased with the increased alkyl chain length of CLs due to increased steric hindrance. The rheology results indicated that CLs demonstrated shear thinning behavior. This innovative method showcases the affinity of carboxyalkylated lignin to improve the performance of CWS, offering an environmentally friendly alternative for producing a cleaner product, i.e., sustainable coal water slurry, with improved suspension stability.

Abstract:The dispersibility of suspension of single-phase (nano-Al2O3 or nano-SiC) powder and complex (nano-Al2O3 and nano-SiC) powders were investigated by choosing sodium hexametahposphate as dispersant and distilled water as disperse medium. The results show that the highly dispersed and stabilized single-phase and complex suspension can be obtained by adding proper quantities of dispersant, varying disperse medium and adjusting pH value; it also indicate that distilled water is a good kind of disperse medium; ball milling, dispersant mass fractions and pH value have great effect on dispersion of nano-Al2O3, nano-SiC and complex powders.

Abstract:Nanocomposites based on components from nature, which can be recycled are of great interest in new materials for sustainable development. The range of properties of nacre-inspired hybrids of 1D cellulose and 2D clay platelets are investigated in nanocomposites with improved nanoparticle dispersion in the starting hydrocolloid mixture. Films with a wide range of compositions are prepared by capillary force assisted physical assembly (vacuum-assisted filtration) of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) reinforced by exfoliated nanoclays of three different aspect ratios: saponite, montmorillonite and mica. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron micrographs show almost monolayer dispersion of saponite and montmorillonite and high orientation parallel to the film surface. Films exhibit ultimate strength up to 573 MPa. Young's modulus exceeds 38 GPa even at high MTM contents (40-80 vol%). Optical transmittance, UV-shielding, thermal shielding and fire-retardant properties are measured, found to be very good and are sensitive to the 2D nanoplatelet dispersion.

Abstract:The dispersion of nitride and carbide ceramic particles in water is difficult, due to the absence of hydroxyl groups on their surface. Boron nitride is not an exception and despite its numerous applications, no effective dispersant has been identified so far. We demonstrate here the dispersion properties of two cellulose derivatives for hexagonal boron nitride powders, hydroxyl ethyl cellulose and methyl cellulose. The effect of particle sizes and cellulose concentration was investigated. The adsorption of cellulose onto the surface of the BN particles was confirmed by isotherm adsorption. Zeta potential measurements shows a charge screening effect of the cellulose The suspensions obtained were highly loaded and stable versus pH, and thus could lead to homogeneous codispersion of BN particles and sintering additives.
